I was 19 years old when this came out. Still one of the best time travel movies ever made! David Warner will be truly missed.
So sad to know that David Warner passed away today! Such a great actor Ive always loved this film
David Warner is now a Cricketer
Ahh... the Child of Bhaal has awoken.
I love this film, too. It’s like my top ten
I remember watching this on HBO. My parents had just gotten cable and we were all dumbfounded by the fact that you could watch, uninterrupted movies just like in the theaters....It was a heady time kids.
(PS I watched this one over and over. I could do that, in my living room. Quite something in 1979❤️!)
I remember that too
This movie is brilliant. The effects are dated, but the story is timeless.
Mandalore Rising calling it "timeless" is kind of a play on words lol
sum metallica fan I hope you know I realize that, but if you don't believe me, I'm okay with that too. 😀 👍
Timeless? calling it Timeless is timeless
Very true. I was thinking "...what if that is exactly what a time distortion would look like..."
Great soundtrack
All the acting was so good. What was most amazing was to see Malcolm McDowell transform himself from a Clockwork Orange demonic murderer and thief to a good doer, soft spoken professor!
I agree with all those who've said how brilliant this movie is. Its a sci-fi/horror/thriller but with a wonderful highbrow script and three amazing actors McDowell, Warner and Steenburgen. A classic.
R.I.P. David Warner, you were a great Jack The Ripper.
Before back the future. And Mary Steenburgen was in this film, who was in Back to the Future III.
In fact they paraphrased some of her lines from this movie, for the time Doc revealed the truth to her in BTTF 3. I still believe they cast her because she did this movie.
This was one of my favorite movies of the 70s.
She always hook up with time traveller lol
Rip To A Great Actor David Warner, Still Miss You
David Warner, what a great actor !!!
TRON, Time Bandits, this ... among many, many others. :)
@@friedmandesigns The one role...that bought me here by accident....was the Kardasian in the Star Trek TNG episode...you know..."There are four lights !!!" episode.....that Kardassian was HIM.......so well acted.
So sad to know he passed away today! Such a great actor
Saw this movie as a kid and it BLEW me away...brilliant. and a real life love story in the two main stars....p.s ...She played the exact same part in Back to the future 3
This movie was a lot of fun back in '79! I remember when it came out.
You must be 70yrs
RIP David Warner
I recall seeing this when it first came out. It's a fabulous movie/and one I've never forgotten.
My dad took me to see this when it first came out. Thanks dad!
I enjoyed this movie; it's much sharper and wittier than the overlong trailer suggests. It pops up on Netflix and Amazon Prime now and then, worth a look.
I thought this movie was terrific. Loved the thought of H.G. Wells and Jack The Ripper being in the same space.
I saw it on TCM not long ago. I agree, the trailer doesn't give it justice.
I agree , I recall years ago upon its release seeing a much better one which uses Malcolm saying he is pursuing Jack the Ripper.
So, this is why STAR TEK IV: THE VOYAGE HOME is so great. 👍 Meyer nailed his credits in both.
One of my all time favorite movies I remember I saw it in 1979 with a friend. This is the movie when I started liking Mary Steenburgen .
I remember viewing this gem as a 7even yr. old, this timeless work has eluded me successfully untill now, "Time After Time" now within my collection in the cloud.
A brilliant complement to Pal's 1960 "Time Machine." Like 1960, this movie has warmth, character and perfect casting. Not to be missed.
I don't get how I only found out this movie even existed in 2020, 41 years after its release, when Malcolm McDowell is one of my favorite actors, I adore H.G. Wells, I love time travel stories, I'm a huge Star Trek fan.. all these factors should have pushed me into the direction of this movie earlier...
I hope you've seen A Clockwork Orange and If
As old Wells himself might say: better late than never my friend...
"Time is the fire in which we burn."

This preview gives so much away.
.....way too long.
I know. I literally watched the entire film with this trailer.
EJS Evanston do we know ant sentences than it it it it it it it it it it.
Did you move the antina some
not did u move it find it it
go back to school use proper English not lies or decent or eords out of context by the same people
Steenburgen and McDowell were married after this film. Sadly, they are divorced now.
It's funny watching this again after so many years. The trailer almost gives you the whole damn movie! lol
Yeah actually I was going to watch it but after seeing this trailer I feel like I watched it.
This was one of the best thrillers of the late 1970's.
Yeah, I remember seeing it as a kid, way back when. I was 10 in 1979. Want to see another good thriller from back around then? George C. Scott's "The Changeling" was great.
47 right now (in the image that I use on my channel, I was 20 or 21 and in the Army, of course).
RIP David Warner.
Who Could Have Possibly Known a Tale About Nasty Ol' "Jack" Would Be So Delightful? ... Unbelievably wonderful time-trippin' flight of fancy that also happens to be an absolutely smashing way to completely lose yourself in late '70's San Fran' culture shock. Giddily gripping fun from the get-go that features acutely ingratiating casting right across the board; notwithstanding the brilliant, electric chemistry of the two attractive leads. Dare not to fall in love with the lithe n' lovely Steenburgen in this tremendously exhilarating charmer, because you will, as did McDowell back in the day. Mortally, ever-so hopelessly bound as we are by the unyieldingly cruel constraints of time, the infinite pleasures of this timeless entertainment are a joy to behold ...
"every age is the same,it is only love that makes them bearable".
The trailer hasn't aged very well, but I remember being truly enthralled when I saw the movie way back then. Funny how I remember some scenes as vividly as if they were my own memories...
They should have had Jack the Ripper bump into Ted Bundy at that disco, and a short dialogue between two of the most famous serial killers of all time.
In 1979, Ted Bundy was already on death row in Florida.
Cyndi Lauper came up her best song because of this movie in the TV guide
I have this film.Very well made and a little different for Malcolm McDowall.
RIP David Warner! Loved your work.
watched this as a kid, one of my favorites. I miss movies like this.
My dad's favorite movie
take me back to 1974 and leave me there !
The concept of this film was just so damn cool! I loved it as a kid and as an adult. Great performances by the primary cast, and what a great story!
Since the theater, and many times thereafter.
Awesome movie. Great performances by everybody but Malcolm is especially cute and funny in this.
One of my my favorites.
They should Re-Release this and Remaster it. Seems to be one of the best Time Travel movies out there. gonna watch and listen closer in the daytime soon. Two thumbs up.... way up so far.
great movie,i've watched this a hundred times on hbo when i was a kid.
The inspiration for Cyndi Lauper's hit song of the same title.
Not really, though. Cindy Lauper was tasked by her producers to write a ballad for her first album, which she did with her co writer Rob Hyman. They needed a working title for the song, and she just picked one out from the TV guide on her table. They intended to replace the working title with a proper title later, but somehow it just got integrated into the lyrics and couldn't be replaced. So they stuck with it. And I am glad they did.
AMAZING MOVIE!!!! one of my favourites!!!
Recently stayed at a hotel where HG Wells stayed and wrote the Time Machine ~ Had to read it out of curiosity. This film isn't the original by any means but is entertaining non the less. The 2002 version is somehow closer to the original ideal. Worth a watch, David warner is great in this film as is Malcolm McDowell, and Mary Steenburgen. Great movie for its age and a interesting take on the relatively short book by HG Wells.
I Just Finished Watching This Movie On TCM,It Was So Good To See This Movie Again
I remember seeing this movie for the first time in 1980 on HBO, & I loved the time travel storyline; wish I could go back to 1979!
holy cow what is up with this girl and time travelers! Not to mention both these guys are primaries in Star Trek.
NUKE ZAP. I think Zemekis did that on purpose by casting her. Nearly the same dialog when Doc Brown told her about time travel as when HG did AND the times were reversed..
1979: My Dear future generation, father was kind enough to take me to see this film at a very young age. The cost of the film was more than tupence but much cheaper than the high price of films these days. If you stumble across this comment, to be sure, Time after Time is a good time travel film if your intrigued by Time Travel adventures.
1985: It of course predates Back to the Future by a number of years, for which I was grateful to see by the generosity of my mother. Both films are good; BTTF was a more intriguing science fiction film, whereby, TAT was more enigmatic, i.e., by way of the series of events of JTR's hand. TAT was a good film, not a great one, but has the more serious storyline.
I haven't seen this for years, Its excellent, and Warner and McDowell make great protagonists, and an interesting idea too.
As people mention time after time in the comments here, this trailer seems to give away much of the plot. However the joys of this movie are all the funny scenes of a man from the 1800s confronting the modern world. Much as you, the viewer from the future (present day), will confront the past of the 1970s.
There are other joys in the movie because of the writing and direction: foreshadowing and suspense and clever lines and the question of who survives and how the plot is resolved.
That's where Cyndi Lauper took inspiration and made one of the most beautiful songs "Time After Time"
Malcolm McDowell Did A Great Performance 👍
A terrific film. Very underrated.
Makes me glad to be British..
Love this movie! Trippy time travel effects, man. ✌️
One of my favorite science fiction movies...
Love love love this movie!
Love this movie ❤❤❤❤❤❤
ABC has commissioned a series based on this film for the 2016-2017 season...so, get ready for this fall!
Dear Hollywood,
Please remake this film (but don't fuck it up).
Yours sincerely,
Everyone.
+mcshortman They probably would though
+mcshortman Uhh, not me. Just because a movie is older than 10 years, that means a replacement should be made to put in it's place?? Why is everyone conditioned to think that way? :(
+RoxRiot They did that with Poltergeist, The Fog, Footloose, Robocop, sheesh, can't the parents just introduce to their children to the films if Hollywood's aim is to reintroduce it to the Millennials??
because a lot of people are idiots
mcshortman Sorry, it's been made into a tv series.
Saw this movie a couple nights ago on TCM and it was really good.
Yes, I know I sound twisted, but David Warner was smoking hot in this!! Except for the denim vest lol. I would have jumped him in a San Francisco minute!!! He was hot in Titanic for that matter! Older but still hot. Yes, I have a thing for older men. Especially British ones.
What even is this comment?
I love this movie
This is better than Somewhere in Time
I saw this film many years ago on TV and I recorded it on my video recorder. Sadly, I no longer have either, and it's such a pity it can't be shown on You Tube due to copyright as I would love to see this again. Such a brilliant film.
This was the inspiration for Cyndi Lauper's hit song!!
RIP David Warner 😔
I remember watching this movie with my family in Florida?
This was a fantastic concept. I was hooked right from the beginning. 11/10
*11 May 2024*
I really love this movie. One of the greats, I also like cat people.
doc, this is heavy
They practically gave the whole plot in this trailer. And I thought today's trailers were bad in doing this
Great movie great acting!
This is a great movie.
"Pommes frites! French fries are pommes frites!"
This movie terrified me. When I was 9 my dad took me to see it, thinking it was only about H.G. Wells. Jack the Ripper was never mentioned and well....for the late 70's, the amount of gore for a then-nine-year-old child was scary. I still can't watch this movie, even though I've seen much worse now, nearly 50 years old. Story line was good and the actors were VERY good. Wish I could enjoy the movie, as such.
I’ll be watching this movie on TMC today
The most convincing mustache ever
is this available to stream/rent anywhere in ireland/u.k.? can't find it
This movie scarred me shitless in the theatre at 9 years old
Time After Time would have made a great series. I wonder if they did love the book and the film. thanks for posting.
It was made into a series
Great Scott....
After I saw the trailer of the 2017 TV series, someone in the comment said "I loved the 1979 version" and here I am lol, cant believe its a remake, thought it was an original idea
☝️ fav
Mary is hot then & now. Never seen this film, I might now.
I loved this film thought it was pretty good!
Terrific flick and interesting that the director Nicholas Meyer went on to direct Star Trek II The Wrath of Khan. Also that McDowell and Steenburgen fell in love and got married. Warner was a wonderful and under rated actor.
I'm glad to see that even back then they spoil the whole movie in the trailer. 🤣😂
A key influence on audio drama Rescuing Ravenstocke.
Hola podrian poer la pelicula completa gracias saludos feliz noche
Why did my parents think it was appropriate to show me this movie at 8 years old?
I was 8 when I first watched it too. 😉
Because your parents were AWESOME.
Wow, they put the whole thing in the trailer.
A truly great movie. Even the special effects hold up, maybe. Not bad for '79.
The trailer showed almost the entire film
Ahhh, so the TV series of the same name was based on this. I've never heard of this movie before. Never seen it on TV either.
02:07 - O M G!!!!! That's Clara from Back To The Future ... well I'll be!!!!!!! I've never heard that mentioned in any of the BTTF documentaries or interviews.
I love the steampunk machine!
Such a great movie, david warner will be greatly missed
2020
Oh , well well look who's here, Clara Clayton.
that woman only fall in love on excentric time travellers!
