For this list, we’re taking a look at movies where the world is either on the brink or in the midst of destruction. And by the end of the film, life on Earth as we know it must come to an end.

“everytime the world ended” -> you mean every time the US ended-
Lol lol
Except for all the movies listed from Australia?
This list is pathetically stupid. 8 of the "endings" weren't even a permanent end to the world, life, humans, or even the USA. The best part is 3 ACTUAL ENDS OF PLANET EARTH got put into honorable mentions. Who writes this shit? In Titan A.E and hitchhikers guide to the galaxy the aliens erased the entire planet which is probably the only end to planet earth that the planet would be quite upset over and in Knowing the planet is a scorched ball of fire after the sun engulfs it in a giant solar flare(larger than a normal solar flare, which is already many times larger than earth normally...)
Two of these films were in Australia. One in Canada...

The Stand.

"The Day After" was an EVENT when it aired.
Good, but not a patch on Threads for grim reality.
@@darronpreston2098 True.
I watched it when it aired, it was a mini-series, stretched over a few days. I think I was in High School. Most people watched it , there were only 3 TV networks so the network it was on had a larger viewing audience than networks do now because the audience now is fractured and split between so many networks and cable channels.
Some people had to see psychologists after that mini series aired in the mid-70's...I was in high school back then.

Aniara (2018) is an excellent "end of the world" film. It's a Swedish movie and tells the story of a space ship transporting evacuees from a dying Earth to Mars. The ship hits space debris, irreparably damaging it and knocking it off course sending the ship deep into interstellar space.

The world doesn't end. Humanity ends!
Well, except perhaps in These Final Hours. An asteroid that makes a fireball able to engulf the planet would be well over 10 km. Larger than the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs. So all life on Earth would perish except for near the bottom of the Ocean... but even then, depending on the size of the asteroid, it could evaporate the oceans (if it's over 100 km in size, which is possible).
And earth is happy

Melancholia is odd but it gripped my soul tightly and hasn't let go to this day. I was so glad when it crossed my path. The music is powerful, the scenes are just as, and the ending.... Terrifying, sad and peaceful.
It was all about depression. The movie was so claustrophobic, with the set as an isolated estate. Like all good art films, it was focused on the characters and story and not on special effects and gimmicks. Did they name the planet before it was heading toward Earth?
Beautifully put
The key moment is when Justine says "Life on the earth is evil. We don't need to grieve for it. Nobody will miss it." No more pointless suffering, hatred, violence, disease, anxiety, depression etc. for anyone. Humanity stepping off the hedonic treadmill at last.
Lars von Trier is a philosophical pessimist, which means he accepts the view that life is accidental and objectively meaningless. This makes the ending a happy one.
Justine ended up being the most put together character in the end. Kiefer Sutherland's seemed like the most stable and put together one but he could not handle what was about to happen. The movie had alot of depth.
I think that von Trier was inspired by--or simply stole from--the Anthony Burgess novel (1982) END OF THE WORLD NEWS. One of the storylines is that a planet appears unexpectedly and is moving toward collision with Earth. l It causes disruptions in the Moon, moves away--then returns unexpectedly to the final encounter.

I agree. There are many great lines in that movie. My favorite is "If you don't get the President of the United States on that phone, you're going to have to answer to the Coca Cola Company."
"The Day After" was great, but "On The Beach" and above all "Threads" hit even stronger.
Agreed
Threads is the stuff of nightmares....the real nuclear terror
“Seeking a friend for the end of the world” is probably one of the saddest movies that just probably ends. Not because of the ending at all but because from the very beginning you figure out that there is 0% chance of hope for our lovers (who we fall in love with almost instantly) and they have no choice but to accept the fact that they no exactly when they’ll be dying. Which that last thing (knowing exactly when you’ll die is probably one of the scariest things that there is)
I would like to know and plan lol'
I feel you on this notion. I rarely ever get emotional about or during movies however, when Penny was flying off in the airplane and dodge was watching her leave, the song playing together with their journey up to then along with the fact that they won't be together for the end of the world frikin got me..like, I actually got misty. I really enjoyed the movie not only for it's realistic absurdity but also for it's character study from the absence of normal life and the impending dooms effect on people who've got nothing to lose but try and keep their sanity by continuing normal daily routines in a weird sense of denial and acceptance at the same time.
"Threads", a film made in the UK in 1983 was the most realistic and depressing end of the world scenario. Brutally realistic. "Testament" was made in 1984. "When the Wind Blows" is another great one. For an animated film, it really hits home and is one not to miss.
Testament is great too
Yep Threads is on a different level to this lot!
Threads should be #1 on this list no doubt ☠
The Day After and threads really messed me up
Every single person on the planet should be made to watch Threads at least once.
My parents to me to see
Dr. Strangelove when it was released. I was just a kid but it left quite an impression. The threat of nuclear annihilation ("toe to toe with the Russkys") was a very real possibility during the cold war. This movie is a masterpiece and Peter Seller's performance is hilarious.
@nexus169 Yep, and both characters he portrayed were amazing.
@nexus169 Three roles - he played President Muffley as well as Group Captain Mandrake and Dr. Strangelove.
@@michaellea3529 He was supposed to play a fourth role, T.J. Kong (the bomber pilot) as well, but he sprained his ankle and couldn't get into the cockpit set. So they hired Slim Pickens for it.
@@murasaki848 Yes, great point, I'd forgotten that.
Building nuclear arsenals is fucking insane and Dr Strangelove illustrates why. Each nuclear weapon is a school not built, a doctor not hired, a unnecessary tax burden just so USA and USSR can destroy all life on earth thousands of times over
"Deep Impact" should have been included on this list.
World didn't end

The Day After is a depressing, terrifying movie. i recommend it
I grew up during the cold war, watching it as a kid terrified me for years. I had nightmares on end because the possibility of a nuclear war seemed so real back then.
When The wind blows is another classic.
I'd also recommend The last Testament, depressing as hell.
I recommend threads if you want something more bleak
Yes, I thought Threads was more realistic.
My aunt tried to get me to see that in the theater i said hellllll nah
I have the DVD!
"Fail Safe" was a 1964 movie with enormous suspense as a US Bomber is accidentally ordered to nuke Moscow. resulting in the end of the world I believe this should be number one.
BEAUTIFUL movie, but the world doesn't end: due to the US sacrificing one of their cities...
@@candiocan I watched that one in a TV rerun and it scarred me more than the ones where the world actually ends.
@@JCCyC me too: I was only specifying the world doesn't end. Btw, this and "On the beach" made my friends refuse any of my further suggestions for movie night...
Take a look at "Threads" - a BBC TV film similar to The Day after Tomorrow. Still gives me nightmares even today.
Threads is worth a mention too, also a TV film about nuclear war set in Sheffield, UK.
Just something about the practical effects, low budget CGI and random Government information title cards dotted throughout the film that makes it really creepy
Glad someone else mentioned it and has watched it too!
359 Michaelward
It's generally considered alongside These Final Hours. Not sure why it was overlooked, the disclaimer they played before the film alone gave me chills.
For me because I live local to Sheffield, it kind of hit home a bit more than most, however it covers a country that would not necessarily be a major player in any future war. It makes you think about the population that would be affected too instead of just the countries involved. Made me laugh when they evacuated the fire engines though.............what could they possibly come back and do?
i was coming here to mention Threads. That and When the Wind Blows. i find them both bleak and chilling.
This film gave me nightmares. It's amazing but at the same time some scenes are so hard to watch, that final one when she gives birth and that man is sat there chills me to the bone.
Threads (1984) should be in the top 10. The realism of it really hits home.
BgmBuses Threads is still harrowing even now. The Day After only took the story on for a few weeks. Threads took it on for 15 years, and I doubt anyone who saw it has forgotten the last shot.
In fairness Threads doesn't depict the end of the world, life carries on. But it was a hundered times better than The Day After. Unlike American film makers us Brits don't piss about. Well, except when it comes to leaving Europe I suppose!
Agreed, it's the most harrowing thing I've ever watched
In the Last Night Sandra O was a virtually unknown Canadian actress. But she hit this movie out of the ballpark. Anybody watching that would not have been surprised at what she went on to achieve. It was a brilliant performance.
No one mentioned “Testament”, a 1983 made for TV movie about nuclear war from the perspective of one family. Very powerful.
Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World was pretty damn good.
it was good... the ending did feel weird though. happy ending but sad ending?
FatFreeIce I felt like it was one of those "what the hell else are you going to do" endings. If that ever did happen, I think what you see in the film is a pretty decent depiction of what would take place.

Miracle Mile is one of the best movies that most people have never seen. In my top 10 favorite movies for sure.
Bubba from Forrest Gump had a small role
The Knowing had the best end of the world look.
Lol, I just watched "The Knowing" and a Dr Evil movie ("The Spy Who Shagged Me") this week.
I dont know how the knowing is not popular, I mean this movie is like combining science fiction and scary movie
how?, well some scenes like every time the aliens showed up in the background it makes it a scary scene. And how basically the Aliens talks to the kids like Lucinda or Galeb is kinda scary
And let’s not mention that scene where we find Lucinda in the closet. She literally looked like if she was haunted(and she kinda was) with the typical horror movie girl dress, with the blood in her hands like you can’t tell me that how she looked here was like if she was in a scary movie
And well with Caleb it was when he was on his bedroom and suddenly the Alien “spirit” showed up and showed him the future
In Lucinda’s scene it shows scary stuff
While in the scenes where Abby and Caleb were talking to the Aliens it shows Scientific stuff
And then there is once again the bedroom scene with Caleb and Aliens which shows both scary and scientific stuff
I mean this movie is amazing bc of this mashing up scary and science, I have many reasons to love it but this is the main reason
Melancholia was deep in the feels.
Oddly Melancholia and This Is The End are my favorites on the list. Really catching both ends of the spectrum there.
31webseries
This is the end is underrated as fuck, it's funny as hell.
Melancholia got it's idea loosely from "When Worlds Collide"
If you thought 'The Day After' was grim, watch the British version 'Threads.' It kept me up at night for weeks.
Threads was miserable to watch.
Richie Beck I have it on DVD
I thought The Day After was silly.
And Threads goes into more detail, since as The Day After came out, Carl Sagan proposer the theory of nuclear winter. Threads showcases it
Aye, I was 14 when I saw it scared the living shit out of me. One of the things was there was no score in the background, (something Blair Witch Project nicked).
A lot of us were also scared about the adverts about what to do in a nuclear attack!
Then all the texts given throughout the program.
Honestly give it a watch if you can find it, you'll probably have a few sleeples nights!
Also, When the wind blows, get tissues ready for that one too!
I'm surprised that "When Worlds Collide" isn't on this list- first read it 50 years ago, and it's still a classic.
""Miracle Mile" is amazing and well worth the watch. Depressing as hell at the end, but still impressive.

Seeking a Friend for the end of the World is the saddest EVER. I was seriously depressed for a couple of weeks
"The war started when people accepted the idiotic principle that peace could be maintained by arranging to defend themselves with weapons they couldn’t possibly use without committing suicide."
This would be true if the superpowers actually use nukes, but on the flip side our nuclear arsenal has worked in maintaining the peace by being an effective deterrent to those who would think about using theirs on us.
Which depends on -us- not using them first.
+Denise Thomas We have them as a retaliatory/deterrent weapon which has maintained the peace and has kept us, and our allies alive for decades. You America haters need to stop always forcing the evil bad guy stigma on the US, it's getting really old and very annoying.
Since you assume i hate the United States, i will open with calling you a jingoist. i have watched this nuke dance my entire life. Yes, MAD worked between the super powers; the rabid short-sighted have been kept in check, and so we didn't drop in Vietnam, for instance. Now, in this country, we have a Pres. who asks, why don't we use them seeing as we have them. Who gives in to the rabid with medals about more battlefield nukes, who threatens a FIRST STRIKE.
+Denise Thomas I don't have to assume I've seen you're bullshit babbling in you're other comments. What good would having nukes be if we publicly state to the world that we'll never ever use them in any situation period. Obama by irresponsibly saying that has put us in an extremely weak position, and by unilaterally reducing our nuclear capabilities he has emboldened countries like Russia that have gone the opposite direction in expanding their tactical nuke stockpiles. Trump stood up to the fat boy in North Korea with his "fire and fury" threat and the fat boy understood that language crystal clear by turning his missiles away from Guam. I haven't heard too many threats coming from North Korea since Trump said that, have you? Go ahead and call me a jingoist if that pleases you, however I said that nuclear weapons are an effective deterrent to stop aggression from countries that seek to do us harm, and that is a fact. You're pacifist arguments aren't helping the people of our country in kind of way. Peace through strength is the only assured path of survivability, history has proven that time and time again.
I think the English TV movie made in 1984 "Threads" is far more realistic than "The Day After" and it did not even get a mention.
I love how The Day After Tomorrow was left out of the list... Like bot even an Honorable Mention??? That one is my favorite movie about the end of the world.
Well to be fair, it was shit.
I love when thy ware running away from the cold freeze in that movie it was hilariously idiotic.
Let's move to Mexico. I also liked that movie a lot.
@@forritarinn
and the cold followed them along the corridor and never came through the windows or down the chimney and was stopped by a wooden door, also there was a big assed WOODEN table in the room that they could have burned plus all the wood on the shelves and never thought to make a "cosy" to stop trying to heat up a large room.
13:15, 'Gentlemen, you can't fight in here ,this is The war room' .
The irony 😂
The stupidity, however. in such dire circumstances, would be about as expected, really!
Were told they couldn't fight in the war room because no buttons were involved
Man as I was reading this, I heard it play!
I remember back in late 1999 that they said the world will end in 2000 and now we're 20 years later 😂
Actually it was 2012 but ok
@@legoobi-wankenobi They first said 2000. I was 20 years old. When that’s all they were talking about in the late 90’s. when it didn’t happened then they moved on to 2012. It was okay guys the Mayans said 2012 we will go with that. When that didn’t happen now it’s 🤷🏾♀️🤷🏾♀️🤷🏾♀️🤷🏾♀️. But it’s going to happen.
Y2K I was 16 and I thought that was hilarious 🤣. The worst I thought was my alarm wouldn’t go off. But sleeping in is a good thing.
the year is actually 1021, they mistook a 'J' for a '1'. pathetic sheeple
I remember 2012
Talking about movies where the Earth ends and adds happy jolly music
Where were you New Years Eve 1999? No one knew whether computers would work after the stroke of midnight.
Threads? The 1984 movie? Anyone?
That is some really shoking content.
Kate Sirko threads was scary AF! And disturbingly very real! Very well done movie.
Threads was a million times better than "The Day After"!
There's a film from 1951 titled "When Worlds Collide." In this movie, a rogue star threatens to collide with Earth, and a group of scientists build a rocket ship to ferry about 40 survivors to another planet where they believe life could exist. "When Worlds Collide" could be thought of as the mother of all end-of-the-world movies. The people at Mojo were probably unaware of this gem!
Let's face it, they're not CineFix !
Yes. Exactly. This movie is a classic amongst devotees of the genre.
Produced by the great George Pal, this is one truly great flick.
It wasn't a rogue star. It was a double planet system. One collided with Earth and the other one is the target of the heroes of the film, Bronson Alpha and Bronson Beta.
Happy Dogg Yes, the film itself is based on a book co-written by Philip Wylie and Edwin Balmer that was first published in 1933.🚀
These final hours is one of my favorite movies. So well done and emotional.
I know this video is five years old but the movie "greenland" that came out last year, would fit perfectly in this list
Who else would be the one asshole to ride the nuke?
Steve Buscemi!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA!!!
Slim pickings did the right thing
James A Is that a threat or a promise???
David Theisen Yes
Hell yea
"The Day After" is not an Earth- or Humanity-ending movie.
And excuse me, the very first movie that should be listed is 1951 "When Worlds Collide", in which the actual planet is destroyed.
I'm going to have to watch that, I have never heard of it .
Thanks for bringing it to my attention .
It is since a total nuclear war would end the world indeed
Agreed. They obviously didn't do their research very well. "When Worlds Collide" is probably the very first movie to depict the total destruction of Earth. And it predates most of the other movies in this video by DECADES!
Nothing beats THREADs released 1985 in the UK.
Once you've watch it, you won't ever want to watch it again!

RE: "Nothing beats THREADs released 1985 in the UK.

Not true. I've watched THREADS at least three times. But then I grew up during the '50s and '60s expecting to get nuked at any time.
When The Wind Blows. That one HURT.
When Worlds Collide - 1951. First one I saw and most remembered.
I see everyone mentioning 2012, who remembers Y2K back when we though the computers were gonna wipe us out.
I only know what that is because of a "Fresh Off The Boat" episode
I sure as hell remember... I was 13
Well, we don't know if it would have wiped us out or not cause people did something about it. Y2k didn't happen because...
1. Nothing was going to happen anyway. OR
2. Something would have happened but the prevention measures put in placed ensured that nothing happened.
Is it 1 or 2?
No one will ever know.
Edit: Was told that planes aren't going to crash. If anything, time and date on the computers will have to be fixed.
I do lol.
I was 10. Wasn't worried about it, surprisingly.
Don’t remember it, but yeah.
I still have no clue what happened at the end of interstellar smh
The guy is searching for that woman, who built the base in a planet. Hope that ends you're confusion.
@@notturrel5784 not at all 😂
dondodda don i believe they basically end up starting their own population the chick and the other guy...thats why he goes and looks for her......could be wrong tho but it sure seemed that way
@@naziking7744 interesting...
@nutflixx thanks 😉
"The World's End"... the best pub crawl ever!!!!
I've seen all of these except for On The Beach and Doctor Strangelove.
I saw a Miracle Mile in the theater when it first came out. And then when it came out on VHS, I bought it and I still have it.
Interstellar and The Knowing should be higher
true
I agree I've watched most of these movies and those hit me the hardest.
INTERSTELLAR SPOILER
the world never ended in that movie, after 80 years the Earth was stabilized and they had colonized the solar system
What are you on about? They had to leave and ended up living on space stations.

There's some hope?? There's some hope?!?! Dude, a bigger world collided with planet earth at the end? How the fuck is that hopeful?!?!
Trump would be dead.
stiimuli you would be dead
DJ Winters JR
yes but I'm going to kitten heaven =P
that hell wouldnt collide with heaven, and you wont have to go to heaven’s heaven
the other planet is entirely made up of rubber and bounces of the earth
2012 movie: Where millions lost their lives but the family in focus survives. It's all that matters.
The Buddhist guy, his engineer brother and grandparents survived.... I really liked that movie...watched it in the theatre and watched in on dvd 4 times!!!
7 billion
I don't even remember how I found this video, but thank you for turning me on to These Final Hours. It was exactly the kind of looming apocalypse I love. Because I've seen Greenland 80000 times, and the meteor hits the same part of the Earth in both of them, I kind of think of These Final hours as an indirect sequel - what was happening in Australia while Gerard Butler was getting settled into the bunker.
The Day After scared the hell out of me for about 20 years...I was 11 when it came out.
Well if it helps, its still a possibility to happen in real life
And given our climate today it might happen soon
Showed up to see if it was in this "list" pleasantly surprised. I saw it when it aired on TV as an 80's kid and ultimately found it pretty damn scary, even more so as I got older.
Any way to watch this movie? Is it on any streaming service?
@@kevincastro1927 The world is getting hotter not colder so there will be no ice age :/
@@ArchangelExile I have it on DVD. There are also some bootleg versions of it on youtube.
