Probably the best engine you could have in a focus the 1.6 zetec/duratec. The only thing i would worry about with one of these is rust everything else will just go forever.
Had one of these, a 2007 zetec also and took it from 75,000 to 150,000 miles and apart from needing a replacement power steering pipe it was faultless. Great cars.

I love the MK2 Focus, the facelift 2.5 version looks better with the updated headlights in my opinion. They are great cars, we had a 1.6 TDCi - I loved working on it, went to 198k miles on the original clutch, dual mass flywheel, turbo, injectors and HPFP. Only things I ever had to fix were trailing arm bushes, stuck EGR valve, injector seals and the notorious cluster fault.
I bought a 2005 saloon for £250. New thermostat and full service later, she's perfect (mechanically, cosmetically she's beaten up 😂) really dependable. PS, the 1.6 is belt driven
Like a good ford focus, nice and simple car that is nice to drive. Manuals are a joy to use. A rarity now is also they come with a manual handbrake which i prefer over the electronic ones you get nowadays on the majority of newer cars.
Zero depreciation and a reliable car that’s cheap and easy to fix if it goes wrong. This is one of the ways to seriously reduce your transport costs! Yes it looks boring, but it’s unlikely to be stolen or raise the attention of traffic police. A very sensible buy.
I owned a Mk2 Focus Econetic. Bought it on an 09 plate in 2012 and kept it a few years and it never missed a beat. FANTASTIC CAR. Only £30 to tax, 62 + mpg and did over 800 miles to a tank of diesel and it was lovely to drive. God I miss that car.
Decent cars these. I had one a few years back, dull as dishwater, but solid and reliable. As a family car it was perfect. Lots of room and a decent boot. Nice to see this one get a new lease of life.
Glad you did some work on it. Love the fact you parked up to use the calculator on your phone, but you drove off after going through the mechanic's list 🤣🤣I wondered why you didn't check the engine bay out as normal
I had one of these. Flipping loved it. Mine was a titanium spec in black, the 1.8 petrol. Full black leather interior, heated seats. Sold it far too cheaply with 113k on the clock. Only real big bill was an ECU that needed sorting at a main dealer 😢
They're the labrador dog of the car world. Absolutely everyone could survive with a Focus. My daughter wants one when she passes her test. At least i won't have to sell a kidney.
I still have one of these but a 1.8 TDCi Style with 137,000 miles. Pretty solid cars and cheap to fix when they do need something. Bought mine for £1500 in 2018 and besides the usual consumables it hasn't needed much. Coincidentally mine also has two Avon front tyres but Apollo's on the back and the AC (which still works) has the button worn off just the same as this one.
I nearly bought one almost identical to that with fsh about 10 years ago. I was young and stupid at the time. A same age but higher mileage, no history 2.0 titanium came up for the same money, so I bought that instead. Turned out to be a lemon and I should have bought the 1.6 zetec instead. Still I learnt a valuable life lesson.
My sister had a 2004 gun metal titanium with leather seats it was a 2 door to from new, never had a problem and she only exchanged it 6 years ago only did 68k
That's funny. I have a. mk 2,5 2.0 Zetec, and it's never really gone wrong, apart from a wheel bearing and a drive shaft bearing. Done about 126,000 miles and still going strong
I've just got rid of a 1.6 2009 focus estate. Leaked like a sieve, rusted like mad, slow and like to drink petrol. It allso liked to use a bit of oil. It drove ok though.
Thanks for that great video Matt. The Ford Focus. The car you can always rely on. The car you'd recommend to a friend. A few years ago, someone I know was selling their 1995 Toyota Starlet. I advised them to get a Focus, and they a 2007 one, and love it. I was waiting for a bus last year and saw a 2008 focus that looked in excellent condition. Before that I saw another Focus in very good condition, year. 2000. That got me even more interested in the focus because it told me because I worked out that one could get a 2007 to 2010 focus, look after it very well and get ten good years out of it. I don't no why Ford didn't do this in England, but here in Ireland, the smallest size engine is 1.4. The only car that size that started off as a 1.6 here was the Audi A3, and 1 series BMW.
My daily driver is an equivalent of this car: Mazda 3 from the same year, but with an undestroyable 1.6 diesel, and still in use without big maintenance interceptions, I can say the best car that I've driven so far
Had the same model and car would misfire , under closer inspection I noticed there was water in the spark plugs , cause ! The jet washers are above the spark plugs and leak done onto them
Yay, snap! Have owned my 1.6 Mk2, same colour & spec for 7 1/2 years; FSH, now up to 88k, exactly double the mileage when purchased. Struggles on hills but a superb all rounder, it'll be a hell of a job to replace it.
If you ever get a random misfire on the 1.6 after it’s been raining or just washed, it’ll be the washer jets that have come away from under the bonnet and water dripping onto the plugs.
Had that with mine where the clip for the washer jet broke. Caught it before any misfires thankfully and only cost me a trip to the breakers for a new washer jet of which they gave me for free.
Focus Mk.2 is a decent car, partly because it was built to (almost) Volvo standards, albeit from cheaper materials. Volvo was part of Ford at that time and Ford has enough sense to adopt some Volvo quality control processes while not imposing on Volvo too many cheap parts like GM did with Saab.
I didn't know that. I do know Ford acquired Jaguar/ Landrover and Volvo for some time but... Shame Ford let them go, those car companies don't produce great cars anymore not reliable anyway.
A mate of mine has one of these, a black diesel 1.6 I think. He paid pittance for it then had to fork out £350 recently so it passed its MOT. It leaks water in from a rust spot above the windscreen. It’s constantly steamed up 😂 I think these are sat on a Volvo C30 platform too.

These are brilliant cars Matt, I paid £1500 for one that took me to work and back for 4 years. Cheap for service items and Tyres. Never let me down once. Zetec Engine is superb.
That piticular model is a UK special. Ford should bring it back for you.
This is off topic Matt…. I love the interior color of your SUV!!!!! That shade of green is just freaking awesome
Hard to believe it's 17 years old! Feels like yesterday when they came out
These cars make for such great value for money, cheap to maintain/repair, cheap to buy and fairly reliable - not to mention how practical they are!
Many years ago I used to have one and drove all it over the UK, these are great cars! My dad still has his 56 plate although it's needed a bit of work recently it's been very reliable, there lovely to drive. I sort of miss mine in a nostalgic way. Well done keeping it going!
Love these "I bought a cheap" videos. Average blokes like me can relate more instead of these top of the range supercar vids. Keep em coming 😁
Great save, too many older cars are ovelooked
Bought my son one with 65K on it 3 years ago and it has been as reliable as a new car and he drives all over the place in it with no trouble
Ironically, in my neck of the woods the weather is sunny and quite nice; though freezing cold. It's good looking-out-the-window weather.
Im driving a 07 Focus Ghia. Its so comfy to sit in and has just enough little driver perks to keep me satisfied. Its got about 98k on the clock and has never caused me any issues. I put it through its last MOT and ot passed with no advisories.
The only major issue I've got with it is a severe boot leak, which appears to be common on them.
Its a typically boring car but i love it!
Love watching/listening to high peak autos videos like this one. When you get something cheap and make it right and worth driving for a few more years. Its regular morning breakfast and coffee viewing for me 😊 keep em coming 😊
I had an 06 1.6 Ghia for 5 years, bought it with 114000 so needed the cambelt doing, the clutch pedal was high and didn't change when I sold it with 153000 miles. Pretty reliable old bus really.
Probably the best engine you could have in a focus the 1.6 zetec/duratec. The only thing i would worry about with one of these is rust everything else will just go forever.
It just needs a quick buff & a set of plates.
Just sold our one, had it 14 years and it’s been brilliant throughout ownership
Great cars these were a massive step up from the MK1 in terms of quality 😁
I know it’s a running theme here, but I’m still amazed by how cheap secondhand cars are in England compared to Spain
Had one of these, a 2007 zetec also and took it from 75,000 to 150,000 miles and apart from needing a replacement power steering pipe it was faultless. Great cars.
This is the type of car that would limp through an mot every year, used to see loads of these when was kid brilliant cars back in the day.
Car doctor/surgeon Matt saves another car's life. You're a man who can save or kill a car at the sweep of your chequebook. Godlike! Keep this up for few more years you could get your knighthood from our new king. You posts just get better.
I like the Mk2 Focus styling, nice timeless model. Perfect for anonymous daily motoring with good roadholding
Just bought an identical one myself, same colour and year, fingers crossed it'll be a "good un" helpful vids, thanks 👍
Looks super for just a wash and vacuum; this generation of Fords' were really good pieces of kit !!
Zero depreciation and a reliable car that’s cheap and easy to fix if it goes wrong. This is one of the ways to seriously reduce your transport costs! Yes it looks boring, but it’s unlikely to be stolen or raise the attention of traffic police. A very sensible buy.
Just ensure it's serviced and it will go on for a while yet
I owned a Mk2 Focus Econetic. Bought it on an 09 plate in 2012 and kept it a few years and it never missed a beat. FANTASTIC CAR. Only £30 to tax, 62 + mpg and did over 800 miles to a tank of diesel and it was lovely to drive. God I miss that car.
For a grand that is a bargain motor Matt that could do someone another 2 or 3 years with a bit of careful ownership I think
Decent cars these. I had one a few years back, dull as dishwater, but solid and reliable. As a family car it was perfect. Lots of room and a decent boot. Nice to see this one get a new lease of life.
Love the content Matt. Great to have a cuppa and kit kat while watching your processes and over spending 😊
Love those early Focuses. Have to say Matt, the cheaper the car , the more interesting the video!
Always think you check oil and water levels first before you start the engine on such an old car Matt
Another enjoyable video Matt!
Your approach is great and the car still has life in it. Well done 👏
I always love it when you do the videos on the really cheap cars as there is always more to do with it :)
This is trippy. I'm selling a 2007 Ford Focus Titanium 2.0 duratec petrol very soon and this video comes up on the same year of car 😂
I daily drive a 1.8 petrol duratec lets goooooo
love the mk2 focus
A high clutch isn't an issue. Hydraulic clutches adjust. The biting point won't get higher.
I had a 2007 estate version of this from 2009 to 2014. Really good to drive and a simple, reliable car.
i do like this era of Focus, especially the ST version, what a car that is
My mother’s old 57 focus still running strong.
My sister had a 2004 gun metal titanium with leather seats it was a 2 door to from new, never had a problem and she only exchanged it 6 years ago only did 68k
Had a Mk2.5 1.6 Zetec.
Chocolate box of a thing, never right from the day I got it, and by the end, it was only fit for scrap!
This is a good, tidy car for anyone at minimal cost. Could be made almost mint with a little extra effort. Nice one.
The clutch is always high on the 1.6 petrol Focus MK2, even when new.
My daily driver is an equivalent of this car: Mazda 3 from the same year, but with an undestroyable 1.6 diesel, and still in use without big maintenance interceptions, I can say the best car that I've driven so far
Nice subtle partridge reference
Had the same model and car would misfire , under closer inspection I noticed there was water in the spark plugs , cause ! The jet washers are above the spark plugs and leak done onto them
Yay, snap! Have owned my 1.6 Mk2, same colour & spec for 7 1/2 years; FSH, now up to 88k, exactly double the mileage when purchased. Struggles on hills but a superb all rounder, it'll be a hell of a job to replace it.
I do love how focuses drive it's fun with a good compromise in comfort
If you ever get a random misfire on the 1.6 after it’s been raining or just washed, it’ll be the washer jets that have come away from under the bonnet and water dripping onto the plugs.
Had that with mine where the clip for the washer jet broke. Caught it before any misfires thankfully and only cost me a trip to the breakers for a new washer jet of which they gave me for free.
I love of the interior in that Range Rover the colour is gorgeous and classic looking, oh yeah that focus is a focus 😊. Enjoyable video as usual.
Well done Mat, you are showing people what can be done on a budget, not everyone has big money,, many thanks Michael 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
The key with no remote is to unlock the bonnet . I have a CMAX which is based on the focus
A mate of mine has one of these, a black diesel 1.6 I think. He paid pittance for it then had to fork out £350 recently so it passed its MOT.
It leaks water in from a rust spot above the windscreen. It’s constantly steamed up 😂
I think these are sat on a Volvo C30 platform too.
I had a Focus estate 1.6 petrol when I lived in the Netherlands. It had done 180000km when I bought it and I put another 50000km on it. Never missed a beat
This era of focus mk2 was very well built to be honest strong body too on them
