  • I tried starting your without a choke and obviously didn't work, so my uncle heard all the commotion and came out and held the choke down on the carburetor to get her to fire up.

When it's running it sounds just like my 1985 Nissan Sentra carbureted motor while warming up

my choke works which is a bit different, but my pretty much fool proof method is, turn the key to on so the pump runs for about 3-5 seconds to build up some pressure, pump the gas pedal fully 4 times, (put the choke on, albiet you dont have that option) crank, and keep foot on the gas for about 5 seconds, done, let cvar warm up, ready to go once the idle drops the the choke letting off.

In the future (should you still have a non-functioning choke) simply keep your foot on the gas (accelerator) while the car warms up. My '85 Rx-7 (12a carbureted) has a disconnected choke, and once I get it to start (like you did, tapping the throttle until it starts) I just keep my foot on the pedal holding the engine at about 2k RPM, and it will warm up alright.
From watching your video, it looks like once you got the car started you let your foot off of the gas pedal, and allowed it to die out. The key is keeping your foot on the gas and maintaining ~2k rpm until the engine is warmed up. Obviously there is more to the choke setup than just holding the gas pedal down, but...when you don't have a second set of hands, and your choke is not connected or functioning properly, simply holding your foot on the gas pedal will allow the engine to warm up without stalling.
Good luck and keep that rotary spinning!!!

Thanks for the advice :), I’ve rigged up a choke wire now so she can start better and She’s been starting up every time now. Even when it was -20 degrees outside! And i plan on keeping these rotors spinning till they can’t anymore👌🏻

Definitely seemed like the more you pumped it, the more it wanted to crank over. My neighbor used to have one of these of the exact same year and when it was cold out, he had to pump it like crazy for it to start up.

Tip: next time you do a cold start don’t do the throttle that much before starting. Just tap it 3-4 times once hold it for a few seconds and then do it again

It sure liked dying after a start. My Corvette does the same thing out of the blue (and on a good day, too) - simply up and dies 4-5 seconds after starting. Like a 2-year-old comment here says, opening the throttle up a bit solves the issue without fail.

Choke is an easy fix, you Had it started, give it more gas, hold it at 3,000 RPM when it' starts. CPL Jimmy

U need to fix the choke mate. I wasted 500 cash on batteries thinking maybe that’ll fix the answer. Nope . Either fix the choke or get somebody to hold 2 of the throttles cloesed with there hands . Handmade choke.

That problem had nothing to do with RX7 that problem was a choke problem and what you call a cold start isn't even close to what my RX7 could start and Winnipeg I've had it start up before and probably my 33 - 35 Celsius maybe even - 40 (13b) it was also only 15 years old then.

Thats completely wrong way to start carburated car... First you don't pump the gas when you start it, you do it before smoothly. If it doesn't start when you try then you pump it a bit.
