    OMG I KNOW RIGHT???
    I am SO glad you made this video.
    I've been an above-knee amputee for almost 28 years, and in that time I have destroyed almost every single pair of pants I've ever owned. The only pants I haven't been able to destroy are my Duluth Trading Firehose work pants and one pair of Wrangler work pants, really heavy canvas and ripstop stuff. And even those, the seam by the hip, where the top edge of my socket rubs against the stitching, has opened up on all of them. And I don't know how to fix it, I can't ram a needle through all those layers.
    The bipeds just. don't. get. it. How fast having limbs made of things like titanium and aluminum and carbon fiber destroys fabric.
    And I'm a guy! I make furniture for a living! My wardrobe is function only at this point. And it's still frustrating. NOTHING FITS PROPERLY ARRRGH.
    Did I mention, thank you for making this video?

    It's better to mindfully cultivate your own style than slavishly follow the fashion trends anyway. As you mentioned, not everyone has a body type that fashions would flatter.

      Yeah but sometimes the fashion trends are so prominent in the shops that most of the things they sell are the trends and it's hard to find much else.

    I work at a clothing store and, honestly, I’m ashamed to say I’ve never thought that much about inclusivity there. We just added a plus section (not at our store, but the other one in my city) but honestly... we should be trying harder to be inclusive to people of all different shapes, sizes, and needs. It truly isn’t fair because not everyone fits or even likes the same things.

    I'd love if you did another Q&A vidio; and here are a few of my questions:
    (I apologize in advance if any of these questions make you uncomfortable, and I understand if you don't want to answer them)
    1. In your shower (or something else where you don't wear your legs), do you have to have shelves and/or faucets lowered so that you can reach them, and do you have any other part of your home modified?
    2. How tall are you without your legs on, and does the doctor measure your height with your legs on or off?
    3. (This is sort of related to the last one) Can you stand on your stumps, or do you have to sit, and how well can you get around without your legs on? And if you do have to sit, is your hight measured when you are sitting?

    I've managed to increase durability of some clothes with a mix of silicone (type1) and cornstarch. It's like sugru, but much cheaper. Also, if you find the right nerd on etsy; they'll sew up all kinds of custom clothes.

      @mrmree 6 років тому

      dreas mom
      People call it oogoo. I'll mix a 1:1 cornstarch and silicone (depending on the desired stiffness); it will stick to just about anything and cures in about 10 minutes. So you could; in theory, use it like a patch/padding. I use it for shoes, old jeans, or even my aquarium. It's good stuff

    With coats, you should maybe try getting one you like and get someone to alter it for you? If they take the cuffs off and cut the sleeves to fit your arm length and resew the cuffs on, then I reckon you could have yourself a coat that will definitely keep you warm 💕 watching this video I've been trying to think of ways you could get around the fashion styles you said you couldn't wear by alterations. It's a shame their isn't a fashion line somewhere that has amputee's in mind (unless there is, I don't know!)

    Regarding your vest use for cold weather - In my youth I used to ride motorcycles, and I foiund in a second-hand shop a sueded sheepskin vest with the wool on the inside. The wool was insulating so that, if I left it open I was cooled against the sun in spring and fal, and closed it was quite warm in winter. You might look for one or similar, perhaps a wool-lined denim like the one you showed.

    I've always struggled finding clothes cause I'm short & skinny (can't gain weight to save my life!!) When my mom would take me clothes shopping when I was younger, I would always get so mad cause we'd have to go to the kids section. Nothing in juniors/young adult would fit me, and definitely nothing in women's would fit! I was happy when I got older & an adult and more clothing companies starting making size 0, but even then they don't always fit. I still have a lot of clothes that are kids size, same with shoes and even underwear. Kids clothes aren't always mature looking and can look pretty kiddish! All my pants I have to cut & my mom use to hem them for me for but she got sick in 2013 & passed in 2015. (I can't sew to save my life!) And luckily I never wear dresses or skirts cause they are always way too long and I can't afford to pay a seamstress to sew them for me and make them short enough. And I don't like mini skirts and short dresses cause I have ghostly pale chicken legs and get made fun of. All through school I dealt with bullies about my size and majorly picked on! Now as an adult, I still get picked on by strangers that think I'm on drugs cause I'm so skinny and I know it looks unhealthy but I've tried everything and can't gain weight to save my life!! Even following diets from dr's I just can't gain weight and i absolutely hate it!! I'd love to put on 20lbs, and would be so happy if I could!!

    • @jeaniejbutler4911

      go to a store where they sell sewing items and get hem tape, it comes in a pkg and you cut item to where you would normally fold it to hem it and instead of sewing/hemming it you cut the hem tape to the length you need and just fold the material over it and iron it its fast, easy and lasts just like a hem...oh btw its cheap also.

    I found it really interesting that you feel the heat more because you don’t have extremities. Do you remember it being different before your amputation?

    • @JamesBTurner93
      @JamesBTurner93 6 років тому +12

      Philip Malaby - probably because the body uses the surface area and sweat to control heating - she's lost a significant amount of surface area to do so - and all prosthetics insulate to some extent, increasing the issue. There's probably something I'm missing, but yes, very interesting.

    • @somedude0620
      @somedude0620 5 років тому +7

      Keep in mind that although she has less body mass than a non amputee, her heart is pumping blood as if it had to reach her missing extremities. With a smaller circulatory loop the blood likely returns back to her core warmer than average person since it’s not able to dissipate heat out through the skin of those missing extremities. Just my educated guess fwiw...

    Have you ever thought about hemming long sleeved shirts or jackets? It's not common nowadays for clothes to be customized because they comes in an array of sizes, but there are still places that tailor clothes. Or, if you know someone who can sew, they may be able to shorten the sleeves of your jacket(s), so you can wear what ever you like without having to worry about the length. I love that you are showing how limited cloths are for people with disabilities, and I hope that you can open the conversation for more inclusive clothing lines. Until then, good luck!!!

    Obviously I wouldn’t know better than you, but have you found any sort of elasticated denim shorts? They don’t have buttons, they’re kind of like a jegging waist but then slightly looser at the bottom. If buttons are your main issue with those that might solve it!
    Also, damn, I’d hate to go without skinny jeans. It’s all I own :’)
    Have you ever just cut the sleeves of shirts or do you always roll them up if needed?
