Hey man, loving your videos. Just started planning out living in a camper full time and your channel has really helped me plan it out. Keep up the good work
Also have a 2019 6-speed, and I love it too except for reverse. It's way too tall. Trying to reverse more than a short distance results in either burning your clutch or picking up speed ridiculously quickly.
If they haven't done it already on the gen 3, its not going to happen until gen 4 probably. I personally dont see it as that big of a deal on my 2020 OR. I will probably re-gear once I upsize my tires.
I agree 100%!! Toyota really shit the bed with their stock 3rd gen tacoma gears. I have a 2019 off-road. Stock tires, it’s a little shifty and somewhat searches for the right gear. Upgraded to 33s and the truck drives like it’s on life support. Can’t wait to regear this atrocity.
What gear setup should you do if you are gonna keep it stock. I live in California flat surface 90% where I live. I do Highway driving 85% of the time.
Dude, looks like I missed you by 2 weeks...I was up in AK the last two months and drove the Demster 2 wks ago. I was looking out for you the whole time! :)
Why you should not? nice mod for 2x4 tacoma... When changing axle gears ratios in a 4X4, the front and rear axle ratios must be the same ratio when operating in four-wheel drive. If the front and rear axles are different ratios, severe damage to the transfer case and other truck components will occur
Driving back and forth over the Sierras from the desert to Bakersfield and back, I averaged 28.5mpg with a 3rd gen. 4 cylinder automatic 2WD Tacoma, repeatedly, on winter gas. So, manuals do better than this?
I have an ‘18 TRD Sport 4x4 manual and love it. I gotta check but at 80 mph I think I’m at about 2500 rpm and we’ll over 20 mpg. I’ll get back after I ride home from this trip. Is there a different rear end in the manuals or are you just talking internal transmission gearing?
Thank you so much! I am glad you are enjoying the videos!! Its basically to put it back on the viewer and motivate you to go camp, offroad, whatever it may be! A direct translation might be something like "do you want to go offroading?" But that just doesn't sound as good!
Chris G Thanks. With the transmission being electronic, plus automatic, I don’t know what to do just yet. I enjoyed the video and your thoughts and opinion on the subject.
no the 4 cly come with 4.3 geared but they have 100 less hp so they need it more with the double overdrive its like 2350 rpm at 70 with stock tires i woudnt regear any 6spd auto to anything less than 5.29
Does yours have the rattle noise ? Look it up Tacoma Manuel transmission rattle let me know if you try it mine had a small rattle my Toyota dealership is now looking too see where it's coming from
Hey ya'll thanks for watchin! This was an ah-ha moment for me regarding the 3rd gen tacos so I was excited to share it with you! Hope it helped
What about does it cost to do a 4.88 gear swap?
Yep. It's on the list to do ASAICAI (as soon as I can afford it)

That is really awesome to hear saul! That is the ultimate compliment and I'm glad the videos are helping. Have a great day!
6th is .71 , 5th is .85 in the manual., Regardess this video hit the nail on the head. My manual stock 2017 was gear perfectly.
My Manual 19 is great.
I’ve got a manual 2019, love the truck

Don't Buy a tacoma 4x4 until Toyota puts the right gears on this trucks.....someone needs to start a Tacoma re-gear recall campaign....

I have a manual and was thinking about regearing it, but maybe I don't need to?
I know the feeling of trying to “sneak in a ride”. Good video fellas....some valuable information in there. Thanks! Enjoy AK.
Haha right? Carl is blessed to live around so many awesome trails. Glad you got something out of it todd!
What gear setup should you do if you are gonna keep it stock. I live in California flat surface 90% where I live. I do Highway driving 85% of the time.
What you describe is the only situation the stock gearing is good for.
Nice evo! I sold mine and got a yoter because of work.
Nitro says even stock benefits from the 488 regear over the stock 390.
Dude, looks like I missed you by 2 weeks...I was up in AK the last two months and drove the Demster 2 wks ago. I was looking out for you the whole time! :)
Ahhh dang! We really just missed each other then because we were on the dempster about a week ago!
Does anyone know if Carl has social media or a truck build page at all? His build is really close to what I’m wanting to do.

They ship with re-gearing for both axles.
Question ... Was the 4 liter in the 2nd gen the same as in my 2015 4Runner ?

Manual transmission has different gear differential vs automatic
Anybody normally ride the 4.88s at 80 on the freeway? How is it?
Really enjoying this channel. You always close with the question. I finally have to ask: What does down to mob mean? Maybe I am showing my age.

What about a second gen? I am trying to decided between 4.88 or 4.56
I think you need a video with me …. I’m a gypsy soul traveler with a life in a wheelchair. Something a little different lol. Just a thought!
Would 5.29 be alright for stock with only skids but eventually maybe a year or two then go lift with 33’s?
If you’re stopping with 33s I would definitely do 4.88
Cool Beans...
3 Mob vids in a week...
I feel like a total tool asking rhis question since i have been following u for a few months n love ur channel, butbwhat does down to mob mean?
So I have a completely stock manual, is it worth regearing?
That's the thing with the manual you dont need unless you decide to lift the truck and get bigger tires
4:40
Cost please ?
Ive heard different quotes. $2,000-$4,000.
Chris G Thanks. With the transmission being electronic, plus automatic, I don’t know what to do just yet. I enjoyed the video and your thoughts and opinion on the subject.
@@VonBluesman it's expensive.
Chris G Thanks.
So do they still recommend regearing if it is a manual?
Craig Husted not unless you with 2 or more inches larger tires!
Is it just for the V6 or do the 4cyl have the same gearing?
no the 4 cly come with 4.3 geared but they have 100 less hp so they need it more with the double overdrive its like 2350 rpm at 70 with stock tires i woudnt regear any 6spd auto to anything less than 5.29
So if I have a 4cyl should I do a 4.88 or something else?
how much is it to regear a truck?
I think it’s near 3k for parts and labor.
@@Jerlemi2 thank you
Another great video!!
Does regearing void the factory warranty?
Yes, most definitely. But how could they know if they dont drive or drop the trans?
I got a 3.5l and a 6” lift and my gas mileage dropped down to about 15 city and 17 highway.
after gearing?
Chris Kell havent regeared yet cause it’s pretty expensive and I don’t trust myself to take on a job like that. I want a expert to do it
What classifies a Tacoma as 3rd gen?
Off The Grid Living any 2016 and above model of Tacoma - it’s the new body style and engine
Done did it...only I didn’t pay $700 more for the cute sticker.
Did ya MTB??? If you did, make a video on that too....adventure adventure adventure...makes good content bro.
No we didnt! Lol carl was back to work after we ate some tacos down the street Haha. I have a few MTB videos comingeventually. One from whistler!.
Cool 😎 👍🏻
I have ah manual 3rd gen!! just waiting for that maggy. #silverslugtravels
Does yours have the rattle noise ? Look it up Tacoma Manuel transmission rattle let me know if you try it mine had a small rattle my Toyota dealership is now looking too see where it's coming from
I have a 2019 trd OffRoad by the way
Get a manual and it comes with better stock gearing.
Hobo down2mob
Sweeeet
Get a Colorado fuck tacoma
Then you have to deal with things falling apart, rattling and breaking down in the middle of nowhere
