I almost went back to stock size but ended up having the gears installed and so glad I did. Now it feels like it did the day I bought. Holds 6th gear like it never did before. If you plan on keeping your tundra and you’re running larger tires, do yourself a favor and go for it. Almost like getting a new truck all over again, way more fun to drive.
@@jeremiahbaham5174 What I was told is that 4.88 gets you back to factory power and 5.29 compensates for the additional weight of the tires. You can search forums and poll the guys who have each but most guys seem to go with 5.29 and you'll like that better if you tow anything.

thanx for the video. I am going to get a 6 inch lift on my tacoma and run 34s/55 lbs plus the weight of the rims (29 lbs) so yeah I think regearing may help.
I had my taco regeared to 4.88 by ECGS and it just failed, did the right break in procedure + oil change and 15K miles later Toyota just diagnosed it with a bad rear diff and both rear axle bearings and seals
I ran 5.29s in my 98 4Runner, 4.88s in my LX450, and 5.29s in my 100 series Land Cruiser. All of them ran the exact same set of tires. I preferred 5.29s with the 35”s. They give a lot more control off road, power in the city, and the engine is barely working on the highway. Mileage was great with 5.29s. My GX460 will only have 33”s. A lot of people say I need 4.56 gears but I’m probably going with 4.88s based on my past experience. At 70mph it will sit at 2,000rpm which is not bad at all. The engine will be happy and it will hunt gears much less.
I have a manual 2017 TRD sport manual. Manual is geared about right, i just wish the 6th was geared a little taller. There is a 1-2 MPG difference between 70 MPH and 80 MPH on the highway. 80 in 6th is about 2800 rpm, and MPG takes a bit hit.
When I was running 37"s on my TJ .....with Dynatrac Pro Rock 60's front and rear (Detroit lockers front and rear) I was runnig 5:13s ....... and they were great ......... for 33"s for example, I think the best gear is 4:10 ...... for 35"s , best gear is 4:56 for 37"s either 4:88 or 5:13 .......... this gearing will provide best power and fuel economy ............. .well thats my take on it anyway

I'm curious to see how the 5.29s work in the manual. I ordered a manual and love the truck just needs better gearing for crawling, it gets awesome gas mileage I was getting 25 mpg just cruising down the highway at 65.
Had a 93 t100 4wd for a while. Damn thing had 4.70 ratio stock rear end. Couldn’t drive it on the interstate hardly running 29 inch tires. Even that low of a ratio that truck was gutless. You are right about power and rpm being different. The 3.0 had no power; 4.70s just give a better crawl ratio.
It is interesting to see you run 4.88/5.29 when I'm on 4.10s with my ZR2 diesel and the crawl ratio is right where it needs to be. Diesel vs gas, LOVE your taco. If you are ever in the midwest think of me and lets do some collab vids. I just crossed 50k miles on my ZR2 and finally have 35s and 4.10s, check out my build here. I go over how the delete is, the diesel and how to fit 35s. @
Just make sure the shop that does your gears knows what they're doing. So many shops swapping out gears and the mechanics don't have a clue what they're doing.
With stock tire size on a Tacoma, what kind of RPM’s will I get @ 60 mph and 70 mph with 5.29 gears? I’m planning on re gearing before I put on bigger tires, but I’m also worried because I don’t know if it will be okay running 5.29 gears with stock tires for an extended period of time. (Just because I don’t know when I’ll get my new tires)
Mateo! Love your channel cause it's all about the Taco! Thank for all the info you put out there. I want to regear my TRD 2016 . But I don't live close to any business that can get it done for me professionally. My friend told me there are companies that I can buy their front and rear diffs at the ratios I want online . I could do the removal and installation myself and the breaking period myself. Then I could send them my diffs for credit? Any direction could help, Thank you .
I bought a 2016 tacoma in late 2015 and a cousin of mine who is a mechanic said i should of waited till the 18 and 19 models come out reason being is so toyota can work out the bugs he said everytime a new model comes out the first year is always the worst i should of listened my biggest problem with my 16 manual tacoma 4x4 was a clutch issue everytime i took it off road i noticed clutch slippage other people with the same model said the exact same thing. I was ready to upgrade the clutch but had an cash offer for my truck so i sold it big mistake i should of kept that dam truck.
So the question I still have after watching this is "should I get 4.88 or 5.29 gears for my 18 trd offroad with 33" tires and 500 pounds of gear that come on and off as it's being used. I will also be buying a 4,000 pound camping trailer to pull up to the mountains.
To R and R, regear both Diffs, shim the pinion gears properly, reassemble, add oil and test it’s a 12-15 hour job. Depends on the Shop and where you buy the gears but a pretty safe estimate could be $1500 for the Nitro gear sets and $1500 labor. It’s a big job.
All I know is what Just Differentisls in Washington State recommends. They are the Nitro gear wizards and it’s 60% of what they do everyday. I bought Nitro 5.29 gears for mine, had them swapped out by a 4x4 Shop here in Austin, Round2 OffRoad. Cost about $1400 and took them all day and into evening to do it right. My truck runs great and I don’t have to put my foot in it all the time for it to get out of its own way. Carl the owner at Just Differentials has a 2019 Taco he just re-geared and has videos on that. They know their stuff and are good about responding. Gears and labor if you farm it out is about $3k. Not cheap, I get it...
I get 19-27 mpg in my 2020 Taco, I will be getting it re geared though. I use 6th a lot around town and get great mpg, but when I get on the freeway it’s in and out of 6th until 85mph. Weird that they don’t have a 6th gear lockout, but it’s all for EPA and bean counters sabotaging r&d funds. If this thing had the new 10 speed Lexus has, it would be untouchable
I think im getting some 4.88’s im on 35’s and have the magnuson supercharger but still want more power might go lower on gears still cant decide. Mine is a manual 2020 with the 3.6
Literally conflicting suggiestions from Nitro in this video vs when I called and asked. Video says do 5.29 for my build, on the phone it was suggested 4.88. I will never get a straight answer. Auto, 33's, GFC, Front Bumper, Winch, Sliders, 200lbs in bed.... Live and drive in what I would call smaller mountains. Daily to work and long trips a few times a year.
Nitro could probably give you a better answer, we usually recommend 5.29’s for 35’s and up but it also depends on where you drive it and what you use your truck for, at the end of the day the guys over at nitro are the experts 🤷♂️
Dang that is not much for MPGs out of that white Taco, I get 21 in my bone stock Tacoma at the pump driving around town. I got 25 in the hills off-roading slowly on misc dirt roads. I do have a manual transmission though, so 4.30s in the rear. Again, all of that is measured at the pump when I fill up.
Great video. very informative. Question. how about nothing added but you did the 5.29 regear, what will happened when stop or press the brake to stop? since it is faster now? please advice about the brake procedure. thanks
It would be over gearing and a bit of an overkill. For stock it’s recommended you keep it as is. Since it’s the most optimal gear ratio for the tire size 🤙
2016 SR5 double cab long bed, 1500rpms is 60mph and 70-75 fluctuates around 2000rpms 3inch lift stock tires I can still do 23mpgs if I'm nice on it, might regear with 33s but I'll have to see how she drives, maybe a tune might just clean it up
The thing is, factory Tacomas have much smaller tires, and thus need smaller gearing to be efficient. Once you upgrade to bigger tires you’ve got to change the gearing to make it efficient again. That being said, upgrading to bigger gears while keeping stock tires will make your mileage worse too 🤙 hope that makes sense 🙌
@@tacomabeast Thanks for the response! It does make sense. As you can tell, I'm not a gearhead. I basically just use my OR for hunting/recreation and home projects. I learned with a '97 XJ that to do serious rock climbing/off roading, you either need to be a mechanic or rich, lol.

@@Jerlemi2 do it. It will be the best for your set up. I still managed to get it to those speeds without any problems. I was towing a 4400lb, 21ft travel trailer plus payload. The taco did great after the regearing.
Interesting to watch this video. My 2016 Tacoma 4dr V6 4x2 has stock everything. I added only a pipe rack, tonneau cover, and running boards. I would like better performance driving uphills. Currently driving at 60-65 mph my engine is reading 4200-4300 rpm. What would be the best new gear size to improve the perfordmance. I recently rode a 2017 Tacoma (same everything as my tacoma) except it was a 4x2 Sport. Traveling at 60-65 mph, it's rpm was approximately 3000 rpm +/-.
What I don’t understand is if your using it for off road travel, won’t you be sacrificing the lower gear ratio versus going higher? How does it do now off road with higher gear ratio?
We have a team of experts that can give you a more detailed explanation for your question, please reach out to them at support@tacomabeast.com and they’ll be happy to help
Love the content. I live in Austin Texas, wish I could drive to you for regearing. Where can I locally get an equally expert vendor to regear my 2022 Tacoma TRD Off-Road? OK that's great and all for you guys with 35" tires and what about us that are closer to stock? I have a 2005 SR5 access cab.... And unfortunately bone stock it feels like it needs to be regeared..... I actually have slightly larger tires on it 265/70 17...... Yes my gas mileage is absolutely terrible. I mean I get 15 in town the minute I hit the freeway I dropped down as low as 11 mpg if I'm doing the 80 mph speed limit...

I wonder if nitro has any dealers / service providers in southern cal...? I obviously trust these dudes and would like the same service as you get in CO.
I have a stock 09 automatic tacoma that’s factory supercharged and my truck really searches for gears and jerks a lot when it shifts. What gearing would you guys recommend to help fix that?
Paying 40k for a new truck only to pay more money to get it to drive correctly? I’ll wait until Toyota decides to re gear it themselves at the factory in a few more years... id be pissed if I bought a Tacoma and this was my outcome
Why would you go from 4.30 to 3.73 ? The stock 4.30 is much better than 3.73. 2Lo is a great modification and it helps when backing up on incline with a trailer 👍. I did this to my truck and it works great.
OK so running say mid -weight not super heavy on gear ? Let's say for example bumpers winch Bedrack with minimal gear your carring and towing a teardrop trailer what gears would you consider. Also say 33inch tires. TIA The 4:88 or 5:29 ???
Mph x g.r. x 336......divided by tire diameter. Equals rpm at 1 to 1 final trams gear ratio. ....if you have o.d. multiply the od ratio by the final drive rpm...... To get true tire diameter.....messure from center of the rim to ground x 2.....your welcome
I'm confused, ether they r lying or I got a supertruck. My combined mpg on stock 2017 TRD off road tacoma is 20-22. And only problem I have with towing- this is when it hunts for gear but even then I got 15-16 mpg !!! I live in PA in mounting area

All this talk of Toyotas and I'm here eyeballin the back end of the Scout.
LOL
I had my taco regeared to 4.88 by ECGS and it just failed, did the right break in procedure + oil change and 15K miles later Toyota just diagnosed it with a bad rear diff and both rear axle bearings and seals
Oh also have a custom steel bumper with light bar 4 rigid quads and 10k winch
Why yall standing outside in the cold, you forget the keycode? Very Good info though 👍
Can you still run the 5.29s with the TRD factory rear locker?
That’s a great take! Thanks Ted🤙

I'm curious to see how the 5.29s work in the manual. I ordered a manual and love the truck just needs better gearing for crawling, it gets awesome gas mileage I was getting 25 mpg just cruising down the highway at 65.
So 5.29s are the best for a 3rd gen
So if i dont plan on building a huge rig.. 5.29s are still the way to go?
Just make sure the shop that does your gears knows what they're doing. So many shops swapping out gears and the mechanics don't have a clue what they're doing.
no
For a second generation Tacoma what would be the best re-gear on 33 or 35 inch tires?
I got a 91 pick up sas with 35 tsl boggers triple Case and 5.29 with lockers front and back
Forgot to mention 22r .30 over cammed with lce headers and studs with mad ignition
2000-2500 rpms 60-70, 2500-2700 70-80 mph. All approximately.
How about o to 60mph times with 5.29 Nitro gears in the Tacoma ?
I would highly recommend finding a shop to do it for you, even if it’s a bit far away because it’s way more worth it and less of a hassle
Just buy a dodge 2500
Who’s the dude in the red jacket? He knows what he’s talking about.
That’s Carl! He’s the owner of nitro gear 🙌
Yup this is the big issue. Cost is insane to do this
All I know is what Just Differentisls in Washington State recommends.
I enjoy watching your videos. Inspiring me with my new Tacoma. Just getting started
Eddie Wunderer Same here! 2020 TRD off road in Quicksand. Sooo many mods haha
Great video man I need to do this
You thinking about 4.88's? I hope you get new gears cuz I love your vids too
You can manual shift or use ECT. I have 33s on a 2019 and it’s fine. Not sure why everyone wants to regear. It’s such a trend.
Looking to buy a third generation. How does the manual shift work can you make it stay in 6th Gear if you want
No way you get 27 mpg on a 2020 tacoma. Must be driving downhill 100% of the time.
That's what I'm saying though. One time Nitro suggested 4.88s for me then the next time they suggested 5.29. Same truck, same build.
Standard Taco 🤙🏽
Go back and do a video on his1987 Australian troopy please.
Thank goodness for this set of videos. All of us are gonna be in a gear shop eventually .Just one question ....How much did that set you back ?
Great video. very informative. Question. how about nothing added but you did the 5.29 regear, what will happened when stop or press the brake to stop? since it is faster now? please advice about the brake procedure. thanks
It would be over gearing and a bit of an overkill. For stock it’s recommended you keep it as is. Since it’s the most optimal gear ratio for the tire size 🤙
I hate this channel but I always do my homework so I watch as many vids as possible
Why do you hate us 🥲
I am interested in landcruiser in background, could you do a video on that?
2016 SR5 double cab long bed, 1500rpms is 60mph and 70-75 fluctuates around 2000rpms 3inch lift stock tires I can still do 23mpgs if I'm nice on it, might regear with 33s but I'll have to see how she drives, maybe a tune might just clean it up
Very informational thanks guys keep up the good work
Pls confirm, 4.88 is better for highway speeds on the 3rd gen Tacoma OR 4x4 automatic trans with 31ish tires?
Yes that is best
If this will increase fuel mileage, you'd think they'd do it at the factory to help them meet EPA rules, etc.?
I'm still torn, going for 4.88's or 5.29's, currently running 31.7" tires 265/70/17's with a RTT, and all my camping gear it definitly has some power loss..
scott17818 depends on how you are going to drive it. I drive a lot on the highway. Mine is 2wd, lifted on 33’s. I re geared it with the 5.29 and i love it.
@@BigRobskitchen mine is a LOT of in town, and highway driving, and I plan to eventually take it across country at some point. it is my DD, so I drive a whopping 10-15 minutes to work and back home 5-6 days a week, and the odd adventure every few weeks...I dont imagine I'll be going much bigger than a 33" tire, and a 2inch lift.. just ordered my SSO hybrid front bumper 3 weeks ago, and ordering my winch in another few weeks. both should arrive in time for install before my North Maine Woods trip in MAY..
scott17818 then you should be good with 5.29 if you have an automatic. I love my 5.29.
@@BigRobskitchen I’m about to pull the trigger on the 5.29 gearing. I have 3” lift with 33” tires on my 2019 tacoma. I spend way more time on the highway than off-road and the highway drives are horrible with my factory gearing. How is the highway travel with your 5.29? Is your top end speed severely limited now? Will the truck still go 80-90 mph no problem? What is your mpg with the new gearing?
Thanks.
It kinda balances it out because you’re adding back that power you lose to all the extra weight 🤙
The equation is original ratio × new tire diameter ÷ original tire diameter.
Thhnx bro!
when regearing a new tacoma, what effect does it have on the crawl control and 4x4 settings? What changes and what doesn't?
We have a team of experts that can give you a more detailed explanation for your question, please reach out to them at support@tacomabeast.com and they’ll be happy to help
I got the manual!
Running 37's on a 2nd gen. auto, was looking at 4.88, think I'll go with 5.29's as I was asking with Nitro reps.
5.29
Love the content. I live in Austin Texas, wish I could drive to you for regearing. Where can I locally get an equally expert vendor to regear my 2022 Tacoma TRD Off-Road? Regearing is serious business; I want experts doing the work vs. a company that installs leveling kits & bigger wheels and tires contracting such services. Does that make sense?
Shoot us an email at support@tacomabeast.com and we’ll help you find a shop we’ve worked with nearby you 🤙
OK that's great and all for you guys with 35" tires and what about us that are closer to stock? I have a 2005 SR5 access cab.... And unfortunately bone stock it feels like it needs to be regeared..... I actually have slightly larger tires on it 265/70 17...... Yes my gas mileage is absolutely terrible. I mean I get 15 in town the minute I hit the freeway I dropped down as low as 11 mpg if I'm doing the 80 mph speed limit...
My full build is 2020 off road package 4door 3.6 motor manual 6 speed trans magnuson supercharger dirt king 3” long travel kit with remote resoivor kings and fiberwerx bedsides and fenders on 35’s. Cant decide if i should go 4.88 or 5.29 i use 6th alot and drive highway alot its my daily and travel to the beach often but i also wheel it hard af
And i mean like real damn hard wheelin i have the steel bumper bc destroyed my last bumper(aluminum tube) goin 45ish thru trails and lost traction in a turn and went into the trees. Cost 13k to fix lol. Like i said i actually wheel the piss out of mine
If you’re running 35’s definitely 5.29 🤙
I'm staying stock and getting 5.29s and a ovtune. tacomas going to be fast.
For first gear you'll be a ~2100 Rpm @ 10 mph
Will this kit fit the diesel hilux ? im planning to use 35 inch tyre.
I believe you need different gears since it’s a different engine 🤙
I wonder if nitro has any dealers / service providers in southern cal...? I obviously trust these dudes and would like the same service as you get in CO.
what gears does the 3rd gen tacoma with a 4 cylinder engine Automatic have stock????
I think it has 4.30 gears....
So you guys don't see a problem running 285 70 17 on eibach lift 6mt. It turns 2250rpms with 265 75 16 at 65 at the moment. Thanks
Can u order a Yoda with 5.29 gearing?? What about the front diff when your locked in will it affect it with higher gearing?
What would be best the best gears for 2nd Gen Tacoma v6 4.0 long bed auto with 33” tires?
I have a stock 09 automatic tacoma that’s factory supercharged and my truck really searches for gears and jerks a lot when it shifts. What gearing would you guys recommend to help fix that?
Paying 40k for a new truck only to pay more money to get it to drive correctly? I’ll wait until Toyota decides to re gear it themselves at the factory in a few more years... id be pissed if I bought a Tacoma and this was my outcome
It really is ridiculous! Definitely returning mine when lease is up.
Thank you for the education!
I have an 18 6m/t. I think my future, if i keep this truck, is a 3.73 or lower and the 2Lo mod
TIA
The 4:88 or 5:29 ???
With that combo I think 4:88’s would be better, anything bigger than 35’s would need 5.29🤙
Alright so if I wanted to go with Nitro gears and 2021 what's a reputable shop here in Florida Central Florida Tampa area
Look for Lux Tires
Mph x g.r. x 336......divided by tire diameter.
MPg also has a lot to do with added weight, increased tire size and suspension 🤙
@@tacomabeast but u guy all taking how u getting 14-15 mpg on stock tacoma and how much ppl need to regear, never had those numbers on my vehicle
Hey, I’m from australia and we have the hilux/Revo, same as your Tacoma but we have it in the 2.8L diesel. The utes are way over geared but with the diesel we have, we are far better off with 4.3 gears in the manual anyway. But no one in australia can get a hold of them. Anyone know where we can get some?
Not sure who in australia sells these 🤷♂️
Did you carve your initials on the side of the building? asking for a friend.
Where are you located and who do you recommend in the Sacramento area
