  • In this video I show you the EASIEST WAY to remove the GM factory rear bumper on a 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 Chevy Silverado / GMC Sierra 1500 2500HD. It's MUCH easier to remove the bumper WITH the brackets still attached and makes this a 5 minute job! To re-install follow these steps in reverse.
    As mentioned in the video here a quick video to help you get the trailer hitch off first so that you can remove your bumper. - • HOW TO REMOVE & INSTAL...

    This helps so much. Thank you. My husband's 2010 Silverado was hit while parked,by a drunk driver. Instead of paying all the labor fees and for educational purposes, for us and our boys, we want to do it ourselves. So thanks a million.

    Only the frame bolts and the 2 bolts in the center for the trailer hitch. The hitch stays on, but loosen the frame bolts about 2 to 3 threads (this is to get both the bumper and the hitch evenly and properly tightened down on re-assembly without extra stress on the sides of the hitch. The bed bolts are untouched. The trailer hitch helps 1 person do the job, and acts as a shelf on the re-assembly. You can just pick up the bumper and set it right on top of the hitch. I've done this several times on the 1999-2007 GM full size trucks. If it hits the bed on removal then someone in the original or last assembly adjusted and tightened all the bumper bracket bolts up to high, and then more of the bracket adjustment bolts needs to be loosened to remove the bumper. Still no messing with bed bolts. Bed bolts are not coming out easily and break often on Northern rust belt and upper east coast trucks. Never once yet have had to touch the bed bolts, or remove the hitch, and spare tire always untouched.

    Long bed has an extra bracket off the back of the frame on each side. There are four additional bolts to remove for the bumper and then an additional two to remove each of the brackets.

      Thank you! Bought a 2500hd used and I was going crazy because one side came off easy (bolts must've been removed at some point and never reinstalled), but the other side would not budge after following this video.

      I looked under my 2005 long bed and it looks more difficult for sure. I also must remove the trailer hitch assembly.
      Doesn’t look fun, but I want to replace the ugly silver work truck bumper with a new chrome bumper I’ve already bought.
      Thanks for your extra information about the long bed bumper assembly. (and disassembly, I guess.)

    I wish my 2006 GMC Sierra was that easy. Even with the tow hitch off and the 3 bolts on each side out, it would NOT pull out (the bed is in the way). I had to remove the frame brackets that connected to the bumper, from the bumper, 2 bolts each side. Then once the bumper was off, I removed the brackets that connected to the frame.

    Hmmm. At 3:06 where you say you removed the bed bolt and it was an 18mm.... my 2001 Silverado ext cab has 21mm bolts there. Apparently mine is a mutant. Has 55torx bolts in the brake caliper too. And the front shocks have two lower bolts that install vertically into the lower control arm instead of one horizontal bolt... upper front rubber shock bushings are twice the diameter of the ones that came with the new shocks, and have a metal domed plate on the top bushing. I just keep finding more weird things on my truck that do not match everyone else's vids...

    :(((( sigh I really hate that I can be smart at times but dumb at times as well.......Now why didn't I think of removing bed bolts and just lifting the bed???!!!! I ended up cutting two small notches, pratically weakening the bed a little bit. Oh well, you live you learn but it's pretty visible with the bed closed :(.

    Bolts u mention is gonna make the bed loose ?

    • @thehoodscoop1969
      @thehoodscoop1969  5 років тому

      yes, but I usually do the rear 4 as it allows the bed to flex just enough to get it off. you can try the rear two and see if that allows the bed to flex enough.

    Removing the rusted hitch bolts without air tools and the spare tire are the hard parts lol

    • @thehoodscoop1969
      @thehoodscoop1969  6 років тому +1

      Yes rust is a problem on some, but I've taken badly rusted ones off before by hand in 20 minutes with a 2ft breaker bar and 1/2 inch socket. That's with also having to cut the spare tire winch line with a reciprocator saw because it was bound up. You can do it!

    • @paint3ball
      @paint3ball 6 років тому

      TheHoodScoop I would love to ditch my spare tire but the locking mechanism is stuck and I gave up on trying to remove it lol

    • @thehoodscoop1969
      @thehoodscoop1969  6 років тому +2

      The way I'd usually get them out is to lower them until the winch quit moving which was usually almost immediately. I'd then get a ratchet and worm my hand and ratchet between the wheel hub and the center of the frame under the bed finding the one 15mm bolt that holds the pulley to the frame. Once you get that bolt off then lay under the truck and push up on the tire to get the lip on the top of the pulley to come free from the frame.

    • @paint3ball
      @paint3ball 6 років тому +1

      TheHoodScoop I’ll have to try that because to me, the spare tire is an eyesore and since I have 35 inch tires, serves no purpose to me as a spare lol

    Failed to point out that there are 4 other bolts to remove. Because I was forced to do the work in an unlit area, spent an hour trying to hammer the bumper loose but was unable, only to discover that this video skips those 4 bolts. Sort of an important detail.

    • @thehoodscoop1969
      @thehoodscoop1969  5 років тому +2

      Robert Rumfelt Which four bolts are you referring to? The 4 rear bed bolts? If so I cover that in the video. You have to remove those to allow the bed to flex. Then you remove the 2 18s and the one 15 at each bracket and it will literally fall off the truck.
