    One thing to note about those modern MyArcade parable consoles: Most of these, and others since the during early 1990s to the early/mid 2000s actually mostly run on NES/Famicom hardware-- and most of them are either preloaded with classic NES games (like SMB, Duck Hunt, Balloon Fight, etc.) or original ones they made, either by themselves or homebrew. These are also known as "NES(es)/Famicom(s)-on-a-chip" consoles.

    Great video as always, also there’s a couple other handheld or maybe also bootleg consoles that should have been listed here including:
    - Virtual Boy, if you could even call it a handled was still Nintendo’s worst selling console that gave you headaches and eye strain all in an attempt at simulating virtual reality.
    - SouljaGame, a bootleg handheld and later home system made in China with the name of a one-hit wonder rapper slapped on it. It got pulled from stores not long after when Nintendo became aware of it.
    - R-Zone, as AVGN quoted it; “This is basically a crappy version of the virtual boy. Yes, I said that, as if the Virtual Boy isn’t already crappy enough.”
    - PCP Station, yes that is actually the name of this bootleg console. Basically a cheap LCD game alternative if you didn’t have the money to buy a PlayStation Portable
    - Ouya, while not technically a handheld system. It was basically a portable home console created by Kickstarter that just allowed players to play mobile games on the television.

    • @MasonJWMyers
      @MasonJWMyers 3 місяці тому +1

      Oh gosh, R-Zone is worse than the Virtual Boy? How do you make something more abysmal than one of the most abysmal gaming systems of all time?

    • @noahnorman6877
      @noahnorman6877 3 місяці тому +1

      @@MasonJWMyers Basically Tiger thought that by making the R-Zone in the same way as those crappy handheld games they also made, it could easily take on the virtual boy that way. Boy were they wrong. Due to the primitive technology in the R-Zone, it meant that many of the things you’d come to expect in any normal video game console were not in this one. You couldn’t even save your games let alone adjust the volume level other than muting it entirely. The worst part probably is that since the magnifier plastic was only suspended over one eye, you had the close the eye not covered by it. Which actually made getting headaches from playing the game faster than if you were to play on the Virtual Boy. Tiger did later release handheld and tabletop versions of the R-Zone too but they weren’t much better.

      @@gbrogo7139 To be fair, the nanos aren't really the typical tamagotchi experience. For R2D2, the only thing to do is play minigames until it upgrades (iirc, the available minigames change based on form and played games affect the next form) and check in occasionally for events or "malfunctions" and make sure it doesn't get carried off by Jawas. Personally, I don't find nanos to be very entertaining unless you're super into that particular franchise. On the bright side, they're much less needy than most models if that's a worry.
      But for me the appeal to some extent is the neediness and needing to take care of them for them to grow and survive, so I tend to prefer the earlier gens. Though some of the newer models have interesting gimmicks like the Tamagotchi On passing it's genetics to its children. A lot of the color models have some sort of customization for the Tamagotchi's screen/living area like backgrounds or furniture.

      if you're talking about Tango Gameworks, from what I gather Microsoft closing them down had more to do with Shinji Makami's replacement unexpectedly getting sick and having to leave resulting in the company not having very stable leadership and apparently the company kinda downplayed Hi-Fi Rush in marketing as that it wasn't a game they primarily wanted to be known for, so can't entirely blame MS for that one, it was just a series of unfortunate circumstances.

      I didn’t play Sonic on the Genesis until a couple of years after the Tiger version.

    Dude, Tamagotchis didn't die that easily. It took a lot of neglect, and you'd get *plenty* of warning! They don't die if you drop them, at least the Gen 1's didn't, they had no way of knowing they were dropped. They might have broken, sure, but so can every other toy. And they were pretty tough, no real moving parts, just a solid little chunk of plastic and a little circuit board. Well put together.
    Besides that, when it dies you just start another one, you get over it. After Gen 1, they stopped "dying" and getting little graves, and instead flew off in a UFO, "my home planet needs me."
    What *was* awful were the millions of terrible, very cheap, knockoffs. Tamagotchi were hard to get, at the time, so China made millions of crap little dongles that had 4 frames of animation and didn't live up to the mark. Those were infesting every cheap shop, animals of every flavour, rather than the weird little round things that original Tamagotchis were.

    As long as they don’t require answer booklets (looking at 1998 (?) Jeopardy! and Family Feud, which simply display number codes for selected clues or surveys and responses, respectively; Deluxe Jeopardy and the mini version from Hasbro after Tiger folded have the categories and clues displayed on screen) they mostly work as intended, though I’ve only played game show games. (If you’re in the market for the older games on eBay or Amazon, make sure the seller includes the accompanying booklet.

    • @Trent-Girone

    I think tamagotchi worked in the 90’s due to Barbie’s and other baby dolls being popular. Taking care of things were highly promoted to children and unlike today, yesterday’s children did not have vices such as cell phones (most). So, having one little pet that required some of your time really did not matter as much. Tamagotchi was one of the few guilty pleasures most kids had.

    I personally love my SEGA Nomad. I got it modded so it has a modern ips screen so the image is nice and clear and the battery life is quadrupled thanks to a new battery pack. Now it lasts 8hrs. or more on 1 charge using its usb-c charging port. I can't really say I'm a fan of the other handhelds mentioned in this video besides maybe the Game Gear and Atari Lynx.

    Notable fact about the Sega Nomad: it is literally impossible to beat X-Men (1993) on it. At one point, you need to do a soft reset on the console to progress in the game. Problem is, the Nomad's reset button was only capable of hard resets, making the game unwinnable on the Nomad.

    Ah yes digital pet toys like Tamagatchi. I'm a 2000s person but I've had a fair amount of digital pet toys, mostly Littlest Pet Shop-themed ones. TBH, I feel the idea was done better with Webkinz and Beanie Babies 2.0, where you buy a stuffed animal and enter a code to play with them. Webkinz is still around, but not nearly as good as it used to be, and I still miss Beanie Babies 2.0, wish TY would bring it back as they did make retro Beanie Babies.

    The N-Gage contains one of the more obscure games in the Super Monkey Ball series, usually referred to as Super Monkey Ball N-Gage. SuperMonkeyCherrim said of the game: "This is probably the worst variation of SMB1, like literally SMBJR is miles ahead of this. There are only two songs, and the Jungle theme is literally the first part on loop." For reference, Super Monkey Ball Jr was the GBA port of Super Monkey Ball, and was already on shaky grounds in terms of quality.

    The Tamagotchi part was honestly pretty badly written.
    1. Every Tamagotchi can be paused and muted. In fact, the commercial for the Tamagotchi P1 you used footage for quite literally shows it being paused and states it out loud.
    2. Most of the color screen models are quite low demand and don't die easily, the newest model the Tamagotchi Uni is quite notorious for this. Although really, aside from the Originals not even the Connections are that needy and you can, always, just pause them.
    3. Tamagotchis have actually been extremely successful, especially this year, with models constantly out of stock. It's not hard to find comments on their instagram profile of people asking for restocks (don't ask me why they think the social media manager can help with it)

    Fun fact: because blue LEDs didn't exist at the time, the Atari Lynx had to use a small fluorescent tube as a backlight. Those things require high voltage to work, so the Lynx also had to incorporate an inverter too. As you can probably guess, that is not the most energy efficient solution. It was also prone to failing.
