Dumbo was my favourite movie when I was a child. I must have watched it dozens of times. And I never even realized that Dumbo is mute until someone pointed it out to me. There is just so much expression in Dumbo, he doesn't really need words to create an emotional response.
As a child, I felt so much empathy for Dumbo
Another big reason why Dumbo's silence isn't "unrealistic" is that he is a baby. It'd be more unrealistic if he were able to express himself coherently.

I've met a few kids with speech disabilities who say they strongly identify with Dumbo - not just because he doesn't speak, but because a lot of people assumed they themselves are "dumb" because they can't speak, or prefer not to. A lot of them say they've had adults talk about how stupid they are or right in front of them as if they can't understand, the way the elephants do with Dumbo himself.
It's weird but to me, Dumbo isn't a good movie but it almost made me cry tought... And they're not a lot of disney movie that made me crying. But The scène with her mom lullaby was very intense. The pour character had been through so much things during the first half of the movie and when finally, he has a little bit if recomfort from her mother but hé still can't see her. This scène is powerfull
