    What's really sad about innocence is that, once you lose it, you never feel true happiness again. This is why the queen is so jealous. It's not over something as petty as beauty, but Snow White's innocence. She sees that power that it holds, and she wants that for herself.

      This is a big reason why I don't think I've lost mine yet. I still get saddened by all that's going on in the world, and try to be realistic about certain situations, but I still try to keep an optimistic outlook and find the best in people and situations.

      I don't think of myself as super innocent and I'm happy quiet often. We romanticize "innocence" way too much for being such a fragile construct that we are told we are losing to easily.

    What made Snow White more beautiful wasn’t her outer beauty rather her inner beauty. Inner beauty is the rarest beauty because outer beauty fades with time and inner beauty is eternal and withstands the test of time.

      Driver Cap Potts right and it was her innocence I don't think she understood how much her queen wicked stepmother hated her and her rection when he told her her stepmom wanted her dead was shocked she was so innocent it horrified her that her own stepmom wanted her killed even if she made her slave around the castle that should be hers btw I don't think Snow White ever imagined she was that evil the old witch Queen! I think she did not know that kind of evil existed let alone someone she knew

    I just want to say that this is the best video essay on Snow White that I’ve seen because it’s FINALLY one that’s not some bozo who thinks they’re being “woke” by calling her a passive character or “not like the better STRONG princesses” but instead actually looks at the context and the storytelling of the film.
    I’m coming from one made by some idiot who says the Huntsman didn’t kill her because “she’s pretty and everything goes her way” but instead LOOKS at both characters and the dialogue and contextual framing of the assassination scene. This is my favourite Disney Princess movie and seeing somebody ACTUALLY try in regards to it was a breath of fresh air. I was practically banging on the floor I’m sat on going “YES YES YES” at your closing argument on other more modern characters who are innocent and kind. Thank you so much. This may be old, but before the Huntsman decides to try and kill her, she’s shown trying to comfort a baby bird. True, her appearance tied into her beauty in the sense of how German fairy tales were written back then, but we’re shown the scene with the bird to show she’s not only beautiful outside but also within.

    It is so refreshing to see people starting to push back on the modern criticisms and rediscovering the beauty and strength in the classic films. Being a “strong woman” is not just wielding a sword. Women all have their own unique strengths and personalities. Sadly, some today think all women should fit a certain mold or else they are “weak.” I wish they could see that strength comes in many forms. For me, Snow White will always be the fairest of them all. Thanks for the great video and for being an independent thinker!

      Snow White and Cinderella are wonderful.
      I can’t say too much for Aurora as I do think she is a weak character, not in a “she’s not a strong independent woman” but more that she’s not fleshed out in any way and is honestly bland, I mean, she only has 16 lines in her own film, but she doesn’t deserve the hate.

      It has been blown completely out of proportion.
      The self-proclaimed woke experts and SJW's waste no time in trashing Snow White's character. Well, let's look at the other female character in the movie: The Queen. She's powerful; but what kind of a role model for young women is that?! Imposing modern-day ideologies on movies that were made more than one human lifetime ago is neither realistic nor attainable. Disney and his animators did not wrong women in any way by releasing this movie. It was a huge financial gamble on his part and, in the latter 1930s, he rolled the dice and won.
      The bigger picture that needs to be appreciated is that all Disney princesses are two-dimensional, fictional characters that are do not represent the entire female gender.
      The woke crowd claim their position as the one that is symbolic of a 'progressive society'; but they have never acknowledged the dark, divisive and destructive side and motives within.
      Perhaps the woke crowd might want to find a middle ground, and surely that exists somewhere between a gentle, teenaged princess and a domineering drama queen.

    Perceived innocence is an exceptionally powerful tool. People give you support, extra chances, and overall more opportunities because they feel you need the help. There is a time and a place for everything, but just as snow white has been brushed off as a “weak” princess in recent years, innocence is frequently brushed off as a weakness, a sign that you could not handle the world. It is 100% a lie.

    • @blameitoncapitalism

      yeah... no. Using your "innocence", or actually your well aware hability to _be perceived as_ innocenct, as a tool to get people to do what you want and give you advantages is literally manipulation. If you know what your doing, you're literally NOT being innocent, you're the opposite of it, you're aware of something the others are not: that yo actually do know wtf is happening to you. But you are choosing to act innocent so somebody will feel bad for you and get out of their way to help you out. It's called play the victim and taking advantage of people's good will and a made of perception of yourself. This is in fact what is known as Toxic femininity. It is placing yourself in the classically female, danzel place, a victimized position, of the innocent, of the unawared, of the unthreatening, of the help-needing protection needing, to engage with others sympathetic feelings or sense of what's right, so they feel like they have to assist you - that's so fragile, so small, so pure (and also so good of heart and always, "what a coincidence" , so beautiful) women. you're effectively using your (misogynistic placed) female position to manipulate others into doing whats best for you. That's a power. Of course. The same way that men using their, let's say, monetary position for manipulating others is also a power move. But we shouldn't take proud of that or claim it. It's a toxic use of that power. It's a very shitty behavior.

    • @Pomoscorzo
      @Pomoscorzo Рік тому +3

      The problem is exactly the "perceived innocence". Some people, women in particular, feign innocence to get what they want.

    Great analysis of Snow White!
    In the same way that Cinderella's story personifies the strength in kindness, compassion, patience, hard-work and grit despite the fact that the film and its central narrative have been lambasted over the years for being anti-feminist (which does have fair credit to it) - you've also made a great argument around the central virtues which Snow White represents.
    I've always also felt the same way - in that the crux of Snow White's story - the moral or lesson of the story comes down to the poisoned apple scene.
    For all Snow White is kind, sweet, innocent and pure, THIS is the most remembered moment because it heralds the perils of holding all those virtues.
    As much as the story is about how vain, bitter even evil people will covet other people's strengths and go out of their way to one up themselves over their competitors - whilst the central character does not have a lot of character development - she is more symbolic if anything of someone who will suffer in spite of her goodness.
    Her story is both a tragedy and a cautionary tale in that sense - that sadly just being good, kind, sweet and innocent in this world is not enough - while there are many good people aka the dwarves or the animals who will nurture that kindness and innocence, there are also those who will seek to destroy you for it and the worst part is that that innocence, naivity and kindness is also exactly what will make you vulnerable to their advances.
    Lastly, one point you did not add is regarding Snow White biting the poisoned apple which in of itself is a powerful iconic image not just due to the fairytale - but that iconography in regard to the theme of innocence ties in beautifully with the story of The Garden of Eden wherein Eve takes the apple after being tempted to it by the evil snake, after which she and Adam are banished from the Garden and they no longer can claim to have their innocence. The apple in that sense is embedded in our culture as a symbol of danger, a threat to innocence.
    So yes, considering it is the most iconic moment in the story and what it symbolises in our culture + all the facts you highlighted here I think you've made a fantastic case on what is the main definining theme and virtue of Snow White.
    Love all your work, really great stuff - please keep it coming!

      Towards the end of this video, I was thinking of how the ending could make some allegories of Christian theology, perhaps: Christ’s grace resurrecting the sinner and taking the soul to heaven. Or an allegory of the Second Coming, this time physically resurrecting the dead in Christ and taking them to heaven.

  • @fcv4616

    Snow White may be a more passive character in comparison to most of the future Disney princesses, but her innocence and kindness have a power of their own. Because she's genuinely sweet and generous, she instills empathy from other people whom, in turn, want to help her back. Also, Snow White may not have much outstanding abilities, but instead of trying to make the dwarves have pity of her for being pretty and defenceless, she traded her services in exchange of lodging, which shows integrity and stirs sympathy and trust in people. This is actually a very good message of the film: being kind to others pays off in the long run. Snow White could have been a little bit more shrewd, but her innocent, caring personality "armed" her with people willing to give anything to protect her.

    All of those qualities were given to her by Walt Disney .... The Grimm's version doesn't have any of those qualities ( though mentioned in the story,they were never demonstrated ) .Same goes for Aurora ... As for Cinderella ,Walt's version has the added quality of her being a dreamer,and the focus of the story is that even though she THINKS she has lost all hope when her mothers dress got torn ,when in reality she hadn't ( as told by the fairy godmother ... '' If had lost all of your faith I couldn't be here,yet here I am '' ) Walt's variations of those stories replaced their source materials in the public consciousness because he knew how to adapt those stories well ,while keeping the spirit of the original story alive ... Meanwhile Disney's The Little Mermaid in terms of writing is way less impactful due to the botched attempt at toning down the original source material ... The book IS greater than the film ... There's no quality that Ariel has that The Littlest Mermaid doesn't ,quite the opposite ... The book has a better,more imaginative detailed immersive and well put together story line,with characters with equal characteristics ... The Disney Renaissance are kinda overrated

      @@saidi7975 Where is it said that she's fourteen?
      Besides, that would make her a bride of 15. Pretty early...

    I suggest the video “Why Snow White is the Strongest Disney Princess”. It takes into account the society that it was made in. It is not the same society as we have today.

    • @FischerFan

      Today's society has become so fragmented and messed up by comparison. The media have gone cuckoo because we've been forced to live in a society of fear....of offending someone.
      During the 1930s, there was the 'Our Gang/Little Rascals' series and cast members. One of those child actors was Tommy Bond, who eventually portrayed the role of the neighbourhood bully, 'Butch'. In his book, 'You're Darn Right, It's Butch!', he fondly recalls the Hollywood of the era in which he was a cast member. He said, during his time of childhood fame, the Hollywood of the 1930s, everyone was great; but I wouldn't want any part of the Hollywood of today.

    I personally think that Snow White is a solid character, with plenty of personality, kindness, and the sort of princess needed in the time that the era was released ... it's just the Prince part kissing a corpse who's also 14 that messes the story up in my opinion

    • @MistbornPrincess
      @MistbornPrincess 3 роки тому +3

      In the original tale, he asks for her in her coffin. She wakes up after someone stumbles, shaking the coffin, which dislodges the piece of apple. One could wonder why the prince wanted a corpse but in history, people liked to collect and display relics and unusual objects. Maybe he thought she was a beautiful, saintly figure who wasn’t decaying, therefore an object of interest to display.

    7:05 Ending as royalty? She was already royalty by birth. Disney didn't have a princess purely by marriage until Cinderella, and after that they didn't give us another until Belle.

    Is there a J Peterson clip on Snow White? As a child I was always identified with Snow White in my family and now I'm googling this after finally reading the Highly Sensitive Person.

    It mostly works only in case of female characters. Innocence, when ascribed to male characters is almost never valued and more than often, ridiculed.

    Watching this as a kid, I ALWAYS hated her. Because even I wasn't so ignorant as she was. I saw only weakness and emotional manipulation (though I had no word for it), and I hated her.

    What a wonderful essay! It really helps us understand why such simple, universal things stick with us for so long. Simple Innocence is beautiful.🤍

  • @LeaveMeAlone3omgIgotloggedouta

    Innocent and ignorant are literally synonymous

    • @DisneyInHonesty
      @DisneyInHonesty  Рік тому +4

      I don't know if it's literally synonymous. Ignorance is characterized as a lack of knowledge, education, and awareness. Innocence is described as purity, the lack of corruption, worldly experience or sophistication.
