In this video I talk about why I bought an older RED Digital Cinema Camera. Is it worth buying a DSMC 1 RED in 2024? I review the RED Epic-X and talk about the financials of buying a cheap RED Camera nowadays. With many people gravitating towards more cine-style mirrorless cameras like the Sony FX3, Sony ZV-E1, Sony FX30, and many consumer cameras like the Fujifilm X-H2s, Fujifilm X-T5, Lumix S5ii being able to shoot 4k 10bit, the filmmaking abilities modern mirrorless cameras have are getting more and more sophisticated. Affordable cinema cameras like the Black Magic Pocket Cinema Cameras or Kinefinity Mavo are also getting better. The RED Komodo is getting more affordable but is still significantly more expensive than the other options from Sony and Blackmagic. The best price-to-performance ratio might actually be an older RED from the DSMC 1 or DSMC 2 generations. With 5k high frame rate 16bit Redcode Raw, the RED Epic still offers unparalleled performance, especially now that it is in an affordable price range.

I have also recently just bought the exact same camera and have been shooting with Canon on our channels for years. Our main camera that most of our channels videos are made with is the Canon c100 mark ii, and I LOVE IT!! Always have and always will, it’s perfect for us and so incredibly simple to use and get great footage out of!

Very nice video! I really like the shots and the colorgrading. I just have one question: How about the low light capabilities of the Epic?
They may seem a bit worse than a recent Sony mirrorless at first, but then you realize that you can do a much better job in post, removing noise than Sony does in-camera, often aggressively, often making choices that are much less what you would want than if you were controlling the amount in post. Short answer: 800 ISO perfect, 1600 - 2000 more than fine most or the time, this without noise reduction. 3200 with noise reduction perfect, more than that maybe a bit risky (but could often be fine). The noise itself looks like film grain, not like crappy DSLR digi-noise.
Sehr sympathisches Video. Schön zu sehen, dass es noch junge Enthusiasten gibt die Spaß an Hardware haben. Ich selbst habe mir vor ein paar Monaten eine gebrauchte URSA Mini 4.7K gekauft. Ebenfalls nur für mich zum "Spielen". Also ich kann das fühlen was Du beschreibst. Das Intro Deines Video ist bemerkenswert. Die Szene mit den sich wie von Geisterhand reindrehenden Schrauben hat mir rrrrrichtig gut gefallen. Auch das freie Sprechen in die Kamera hast du gut drauf. Hatte das ein paar Mal probiert und bin immer gescheitert. Du hast echt gute Skill's....auch mit dem Licht. Drücke Dir die Daumen, dass Du ein paar spendable Klienten finden wirst.

In regard CCD sensors - I recently started to use my Nikon D40 again just because it's CCD sensor delivers pictures that are massively appealing despite all the shortcoming of the camera and I find the ability to adjust Sigma lens focus fine-tuning among such abilities that brings back the strengths of old gear.
I love the older nikon cameras, my D2X is one of my favorite!

Very well made video though and sometimes one just has to do things that bring joy. Even if they might not be the most practical or financially well thought out decisions.
Hahaha, I mean price to performance is really good when just looking at the specs, it’s just the practicality that suffers 😂 And the file sizes actually aren’t too crazy when you turn up the compression ratio, you can easily shoot at a ratio of 1 : 16 or so without loosing much quality. I've never shot with the dragon sensor but I've heard great things about it, maybe some day when I get the stupid idea to upgrade my red 😂
just like dragon does not have the same image as red one, loved and owned them all, but today Red does not make any financial sense.
Dragon together with the Gemini are the best sensors RED ever created!! Dragon has a spacial sauce that makes images look stunning!

It’s a Fun Camera to have have I would say get Pd-movie for it and some a olpf filter go shoot keep shooting pull stills etc I keep fee CF bodes around also there awesome and is a tank yes you change ssd you will need to use diskdrill app too do your clone to give it and Isobin format
Just got a full Komodo 6k full kit for 4.5k, biggest purchase of my life, and im happy as a kid, have the camera for 1 month now, best thing i've ever done.
This camera along with the alexa Classic...... Brings me back to my days as an AC. I do not miss how heavy cameras used to be.
Wait they are lighter now? 😂 Most Alexa’s and Red’s still look quite heavy

Hey man, I did the exact same terrible financial descision. I got myself a Red epic Mysterium X 5K which is litterally the same camera you use. I loved the video but there is something I cant figure out. I tried plugging in an external display on the HDMI port with no luck, I never got the HDMI out working. Did you had to do something in the settings to enable it?
You can change the output priority, so if you have an original red monitor or EVF plugged in at the same time, with a higher priority set for it, there won't be any output over the HDMI I believe, but if you plugged in the HDMI monitor as the only display and booted the camera you should get a signal. Unfortunately, I've heard that the HDMI connectors on these cameras can be prone to failure, and I'm praying that it doesn't break on mine haha
@futc.photography I tried the priority thing by putting hdmi in first. Unfortunately it does not work even after disconnecting the efv and booting with just hdmi. The thing is, when I unplug the hdmi, the screen detects that I removed it. So it knows something is plugged but cannot get any signal. I think I'm going to try to find a cheap sdi monitor
MPB also sells the epic-w helium 8k for a little over 3k€ for the body.
might be the cheapest way to get cinema grade 8k60fps recordings.
Might be, but the DSMC2 accessories are also still a pretty penny, especially the mags, and that IO expansion module I believe you need.

Fun fact: With newer Sigma lenses you can micro fine-tune focus sharpness inside the lens with the USB dock so you can get even sharper images just by making micro adjustments. This turns out to be among one of main strengths of the Sigma lenses.
Hmm not sure if the one I have can do that, my e-mount samyang lenses can be tweaked using the lens station though
@@futc.photography Lens station is implementation of the same capability by Samyang. Look for Sigma USB dock for-e-mount. All the new Sigma lenses have micro auto-focus adjustment capability on hardware level. The only prerequisite is to have the latest firmware on the lens. I for instance adjust Sigma lenses auto-focus for my Nikon cameras that can't have it done in camera body and later will adjust the lens settings corrected for the specific camera inside the camera. Sigma says you can set the auto-focus fine tune values for every focal length on zoom lenses. Nikon allows to have one adjustment value for the whole zoom lens range. You will definitely benefit in trying fine-tune auto--focus of the Sigma lens for your Red camera.

recently got the scarlet w dragon 5k and i absolutely love it. been dreaming of a RED since HS so i feel that. heard so many bad reviews of the komodo that it didnt seem right. however, i may aim for the komodo x or see what else is to come next from RED

Got my Scarlet-W back in may with 180 hrs on it. Komodo feels like a pocket 6k imho. I still think choosing the scarlet-w over the komodo was the right decision.

Amazing Camera!! and yes they've shot many High budget movies and shows, "Stranger Things". however something that budget film makers should know is that Million Dollar look comes from
a very skilled DP and Gaffer (Lighting). and Also VERY VERY expensive Lenses costing 25-30k a piece. usually rent for $1000+ a day for a kit. But great looks can be achieved with cheaper glass in the right hands. best camera for the money by a long shot. (if your shooting Narrative) I would say the same thing about the Original ARRI Alexa Classic.

I have had my Red Epic Dragon since 2015 which was upgraded from the Red Epic. My camera is still running great. I is heavy but that's what the gym is for lol. No really the gym is needed. I do wish they would open up the SSD which is not cool of RED to close it

ive got a Raven, and I love it but it does have its drawbacks and I end up using my Canon 5D MKIV WAY MORE

@@luckyboi5103 it’s not very suitable to run and gun videography and the 35mm sensor crops in a bit so a 16 turns into about a 24 and it’s not the best in low light it’s very much a production camera not a one man band ya know

I bought a RED RAVEN and I love it.
11:42 these are not propriotery. These sre normal m.2 mini sss drives that look like a laptop bluetooth/wifi card. They're incredibly cheap too. Red lied for YEARS about them. There is nothing prop-blabla about dsmc1/2 reds.
Even the redraw files are just JPEG2000 frames wrapped in a zip file with a html header.
Yeah I've followed those developments over the past couple years, with proprietary I meant the firmware lock, it would be great if red were to lift those on these older models.
But I'll look into those redcode findings that sounds interesting
Guys, it's a cool camera, but, unless you need really high frame rates it is way too much work. You don't need a tool that gets in the way.
It depends on the shoot, I wouldn't use it for every shoot but sometimes it's worth it to prioritize image quality
@@futc.photography We all love our cameras, they are all great fun, and you cannot take away what RED have been able to achieve, the image is really great. That said, I just shot a feature film on the original Lumix S5, into the Ninja V. I was getting Full Frame, 5.9k Prores RAW, 422, 12 bit. I would challenge anyone to spot the difference between the image out of that camera and a 100k Ari. And, I never had to think about the camera once. On a 25 day shoot, if the image is comparable, that counts for a lot. Cheap, small, easy to power, easy to get into small places, no noise, no overheating, and "Full Frame;" Do you remember how wide 16mm is on a full frame camera? And, my complete rig cost less than 2.5k. I would just want to point out, if anyone out there wants to make movies, don't go thinking you have got to spend a ton of money on a rig.
those hdmi ports also break for no reason on RED cameras, ask my scarlet how it knows.

awesome video man. 18 bit depth is crazy. that's where all the magic is coming from. it was a big deal that lumix had 10 bit a few years ago.
It's 16 bit, but yeah there's a crazy amount of information there
17:00 it's not the sensor tho, it's a regular cmos sensor - the magic is in the raw files
compare magic lantern raw on canon cameras to their h.265, you'll see that it is just as soft and pleasing
or even apple prores log vs regular iphone footage :)
Hmm it definitely helps, but there also are people that say the RED komodo doesn’t have a great look, but that also shoots redcode raw.

RED's are getting cheaper, you can buy a DSMC2 kit for $5000 now, ready to shoot, with everything. For a reason though, not too many people want to rent them anymore, so maybe if you do only narrative stuff it's ok. Otherwise a sony FX would be better. But i also like irrational decisions so i bought an Alexa kit for 4000 EUR. :D
