  • I am back with the Austin Healey Sprite name Barn Sprite 1 and today I install a new fuel tank from Moss Motors. This looks to be the same tank offered from other sources and all of them are different from the original gas tank. Want the red Sprite on a shirt get it in my store: thisweekwithca...

    Keep that old filler neck gasket. In 18 months when the replacement cracks you can reinstall the old one.

      I knew there was a reason he didnt clean up the mud under the original grommet before installing the new one!

    You should invest in some of that blue gel sealant (I forget the name) that they use on gas tanks. It will prevent gas odors in the car. Also, I put a new tank and sending unit in a bugeye shortly after shoulder surgery and rehab abd had to get pulled out of the trunk by my coworkers afterwards. Oh yes...Hylomar was the name of the sealant.

    Great video. If I can make a suggestion? We have a shop,that does conversions to electric. We use a cheap pump and always suck out all fluids beforehand. Fluids are contained in a sealable container . We avoid draining from the tank.in this way, the fluids are always contained and there is less contamination. Plus, it is difficult to deal with fluids from a bowl or basin to dispose of.

    Thanks Steve! I own a 59 Bugeye and your my go to channel for all things mechanical! I’m sure you heard of Bugeye Guy. That’s who I get all my parts from for mine. He has a wonderful catalog on his website. All the parts that I’ve got fit and he has fast shipping as well! That barn find looks great! Keep up the good work and we’ll see you on the next one!!

    Great video. Enjoy watching you work on your cars. You make it look easy. When I poked my tank a stream of gas came out too. Only problem was I knocked the funnel over so a lot of it ended up on the floor. Luckily the tank was mostly varnish.

    It’s a little bit late now, but there’s a company in Canada called Spectra Premium that makes the original style tank with the long neck. By all accounts, they’re a high quality product, too.

      I've installed Spectra Premium tanks in my Bugeye and in my Festiva. Great quality. I would have changed the float of the sender to a brass one though. Ethanol is not kind to the plastic ones.

    A very informative and interesting video. Thank you Steve for putting it together. I loved the oil leak reference BTW . Someone the other day said they had an oil leak on their British car. I said 'back in the day you could see oil stains down each side of the street where cars have leaked oil so don't worry about your leak' and I did of course tell them it could be fixed. 👍👍

    As a heads up Steve The Winner's Circle actually sells a one piece tank that I'm pretty sure fits a bugeye

    I fitted a one piece tank (made in Canada) and the neck had a major foul on the opening in the rear shroud. So a two piece with flexible neck would have been an advantage. No drain plug on the new one.

    Yay, another barn-Sprite video! This is great pre-Thanksgiving viewing: I enjoy watching dirty, filthy, crusty under-car jobs while being thankful that I'm not doing them myself! Plus it's a fun troll to look at the initial video and thinking "OMG, that filler pipe is never coming out!" and then seeing how well it cleans up...

    Great thing about British cars is how much oil they leak thus coats the parts. Too funny.

    THXS for the instruction, with gasoline with acohol its better to install a copper float, they are better resistant than the plastic ones

    • @ThisWeekWithCars
      @ThisWeekWithCars  2 місяці тому

      The copper ones are not resistant to ethanol fuels that is why they supply a plastic one.

    I’m wondering whether it would have been possible to fit the filler neck first and then treat the whole thing as a single assembly for refitting, just like how it came out but in reverse. Or does the floor opening get in the way of that?

    • @ThisWeekWithCars
      @ThisWeekWithCars  2 місяці тому +1

      The hose and clamps will not fit through the hole in the floor.

    I'm curious why you choose the Moss part over an original style replacement? An internet search shows them available from several sources including Canada, England of course ebay.

      This tank seems to be the go to for sellers in the US and as others have stated in the comments they have had problems with the new tanks with fixed necks not lining up correctly to fit through the body and having to be cut off.

  • @rimizoem

    Is there much danger from the fuel vapour while you're draining the tank, specifically with a fire risk in mind?

    Hello Steve, I have a question about my drum brakes on my 59 Bugeye. When I go to stop my drum brakes have a really high pitch squealing noise. I was going to try and spray them with brake cleaner, any thoughts on why they are squealing? Thanks man, appreciate any thoughts or ideas on why or how to fix.

    • @ThisWeekWithCars
      @ThisWeekWithCars  Місяць тому

      If brakes are squealing it is always best to inspect them to make sure there is no metal on metal contact, either from the pad being worn or something that has come loose.
