Hey I have a question about a door closer problem I'm hoping you can help with. I'm super interested in getting into locksmithing, and currently I'm working as a maintenance man. I had an issue with a commercial door on the outside of a business that would open about two inches when the heat came on. I installed a brand new door closer and ended up with the same result. I believe that it is installed correctly, and I even had another guy who works for us take a look at it and try adjusting it with no success. Any thoughts?

@@austinknowlton1783 Hey here’s a few tips, for one the door closer needs to be on the inside of the door, also did you pre-load the closer? Before you attach the arm you have to get a crescent wrench and grab the head of the closer (part that the arm attaches to), grab the one your not attaching the arm to and crank it about a whole turn. Then while maintaining the pressure attach the arm to the closer and the frame. Then your closer will have enough pressure to keep the door closed. Maybe will do a video on this sometime in the near future. If your interested in more of our content check out our other channel “UDROpreneur”, thanks for watching. - Uriah

Thanks. I did give it a small amount of preload but now I'm thinking the problem is I didn't give it enough. When I tried more preload the door wouldn't open completely, and the thing I didn't understand at the time is that you can adjust the amount of backcheck it has. Thanks again, with your input I think I have figured out the issue.

The "closer" on my company's door was installed upside down and so once I saw this video and saw the adjustment ports the rest was "butter"! Thanks for the info!

my current closer is causing it to be very hard to open the door. I get a lot of complaints from customers. in theory could i loosen up, soften up the main spring to make the door easier "lighter" to open?
could you demonstrate some of the options of that spring adjustment? could you also link to that opener product? seems to have more options than your typical closer. Thanks. SAM

Awesome sauce🎉 our flat is close to the back door upstairs for five apartments and you'd be surprised how often that back door is used! The door slamming is very unnerving to say the least and keep my comments clean😅
Thank You for the easy to understand demonstration ❤

I’ll be viewing this clip a couple more times.
They just installed a new door to the foyer in the small block of flats where I live and the door slams shut causing a pressure wave that rattles my front door up one flight of stairs.
When released from an open position around 80° from closed, the door hangs for ages slowly moving from 80° to 70° to maybe 50° from the latch.
Like a roller coaster reaching the apex of its climb and descending at “ludicrous speed”, the door violently slams home.

how to adjust to hold it open i need to keep my door open as i drive my wheel chair thru the doorway. then grab the handle and tug it to then let the closer do its job of closing the door. but i have to be able to open it and have it stay open until i close it myself. thanks

Most door closer companies have what's called a “hold open arm” they can be purchased separately for the specific Make & Model Number, as they are not generic, and specifically for this model, as he said it was a 1250, it would be a LCN 1250-3049 689 HO ARM - the 689 means Alum. Finish, or the 1450 the bigger model in this New series from LCN - see below
      LCN model# 1250 x 3049=“Hold Open” x Finish
      LCN model# 1450 x 3049=“Hold Open” x Finish
LCN 1250 has 3/4" Vertical Holes x 9-1/16” Horizontal Holes
LCN 1450 has 3/4" Vertical Holes x 12" Horizontal Holes

note: Maybe a better option is what’s called a Delayed Action closer, or you can but the Cylinder only, this cylinder delays the closing of the door closure again by adjustment screw to dial in how much time you want it to delay, this could be a better option if you always need more time as opposed to sometimes, the idea is to give you more time for getting through an opening before the door starts to close on its own, for the LCN 1250 you would need to call out the 1250-3071DEL or bigger model 1450-3071DEL for Delayed Action Cylinder
LCN makes many closers, right here we're just talking about two of the newer models, I hope this helps

No if it’s leaking it needs to be replaced it’s not oil it’s hydraulic fluid

@GuardianSafeAndLock right right. It's just that my sweep is not working properly no matter the position of the restricting screw. That's why I thought maybe the fluid inside is low

I just moved in to an apartment. All doors slam violently such that floors and windows shake.
Looks easy enough to adjust in the video and I was able to fine tune mine but building management ignored my request for the other doors to be fixed.
I really cannot relax here and looks like I am going to move out and look for a place again.
