People who want to get into IT need to see videos like this one. College and youtube can be misleading on how you get into the industry. A degree or Certification doesn’t bypass the entry level point and getting that opportunity isn’t easy with HR that doesn’t always understand the job. Good luck I just started my entry level job and I’m 44 lol

If your new to IT don’t waist your time moving from IT help desk to other positions. Take certificates as soon as possible because once two years pass in IT help desk pass you’ll realize that you need to go back and do certifications for SYS admin or network admin or even cybersecurity if your into it. Everything in help desk positions can be learned easy and online as well if you need to but your advanced problems in this position will be escalated to a sys admin that works above you and he will have the knowledge always and you will go back to fixing beginner problems. Do certificates as your working in help desk asap and focus more on certification then your current job.

thanks man. im thinking of getting CompTIA A+ certificate to get my foot in the IT field as a Help Desk position then as im working in the help desk position ill save money to get CompTIA N+ and then S+ in order to climb the IT ladder into a sys admin. is this a good path? is this what you essentially meant?

I took an online curse for Network+ . Not super easy but easy manageable.

yes i know this topic already, should i just start applying for helpdesk and desktop support roles? i have no experience in the IT work force and i hear you need comptia A+ in order to even get the entry level helpdesk job.
i was gonna build my foundation with comptia a+ and then get a helpdesk job and then start specializing into the sysadmin field or networking by getting the other network+ and sec+ certs while im working. and maybe a CCNA cert if i end up going into network engineering. @@memoli801

Great example on how to steer through an initial IT interview.
In my experience, this part of the interview can be the easiest. HR is looking for someone with some skill but more precisely, someone with a good attitude and capable of being able to speak with people.
The second round of interviews are definitely more difficult. Speaking with individuals from the IT dept. of a company who will be asking you more exact experience questions. Troubleshooting, definitions, how-to's and other hardware / software questions can either make or break your interview at that point.
Keep at it and do your best!

If I didn’t know how to do something that they would ask me, I would just tell them that in a case like that, I would Google or UA-cam it and learn that way. They will love that answer because it shows that you know when you have been beat and will put in the extra work to get it done and have it done correctly. Asking for help from a coworker is also a great answer as it shows that you work well with others, but Google and nowadays, UA-cam, are an IT persons best friend. Almost every day, there will be a time where you may come across something that you will not know how to fix or what to do and Google or UA-cam will be used. Never feel shame in seeking help, but don’t just look it up. Try taking the time to learn the processes so the next time something like it comes up, you will be prepared.

Excellent Interview. The key now is to not over emphasize any certifications. I am an IT Director for large and small business for about 15 years. I started in IT 30 years ago. Back then we didnt care at all about certs. I only wanted people that had been in the trenches getting hard earned OJT. Then the trend was certs. I will always hire the person that is a hard worker, puts in the time and is always willing and ready to learn something new. The latest greatest MS Cert or network + or whatever, could care less. Of course mention what your certified in but also push your desire to learn and work hard. The cert comments dont apply to CIsco, I'll hire a CCIE or seasoned CCNP. If you have those, of course, toot your horn!

so i get what you mean about having experience but the IMO shity cycle is when everywhere wants experience but you cant get any because everyone wants experience. Like for me looking at certs shows that this person likely went out on their own dime and took the initave to learn something new and thus pushing them further in life. that to me is a hard worker that is dedicated to what they wanna do.

@@darkinspirationstudio1250 From my side of the desk, I would tell you that it all depends on the position applying for. I would not expect an entry lever Admin or help desk tech to have much experience. I want to help build that persons experience the right way. I do agree that some certs are good and appreciated, I just dont like it when a person bases their worth on certifications. Their needs to be a healthy mix of experience and certs. I wish you well.

@@darkinspirationstudio1250 Exactly. People ask for/expect experience so people turn around and get certs (which can come with training in real life situations especially if its a more technical cert), to get experience. Now some people are saying certs are essentially crutches and workers need to learn to get a job without really mentioning them?? Fuck that. We can't win if we play by these kinds of rules. Just market yourself well, learn how to sell yourself and your skills, and you'll get a job when you meet the right hiring manager. Like dating.

Very cool you making yourself vulnerable for the rest of the people looking to follow your path.
I have one suggestion, as someone who hires a LOT… You don’t have to sell yourself.
    Listen more, Talk less 😂
When they set up your interview, they’re already prepared to hire you. The more you talk, the more opportunity you give them to NOT hire you.
Im not suggesting you not answer their questions, but work on staying in the rails. Practice answering “tell me about” questions in 2-4 sentences maximum.
    Most important…
When they ask if you have any questions, this is the question to ask, or similar…
“If I am ultimately hired, ideally what impact do you see me having in the roll one year from now?”
With that question, you planted in their brain a vision of you working there, you made them think about what BENEFITS hiring you could potentially bring to the company (even if they didn’t want to, and even though they don’t have any idea what you’re actually capable of)
Also, if you want the job, never ask specifics about hours. 😅 While it’s important for you to know those specifics, at the interview stage the only thing you do by asking this, is allow the HR person to know you’re likely going to be a hard time to manage/difficult.
Your primary mission is to land the job. If the hours are ultimately unmanageable in volume or schedule conflicting - it’s easier to have them adjusted after you’re employed… If at that point, you can’t adjust them, fine, find something else. But, your likelihood to get a schedule you can work with is far more likely than landing a job that fits a rigid time requirement.

Now you have people who go to school and get all kinds of certs and don’t get hired. A lot of people want experience and it’s a double edged sword bc you don’t have it, only a paper that says you learned the terminologies. There was a guy around 10 years ago that received their Computer Science degree and literally asked me how to lock their computer; he was a recent graduate so I get why managers don’t want to hire, mainly because they need someone on the ground running. this was not an interview with a hiring manager though. Did you catch how he was asked for his resume at the end? By the time you are sitting with the hiring manager they have your resume in front of them. I think this was the recruitment team's initial vetting process and that's why if you recall in the beginning the woman said she was getting information at a high level. Recruiters I have found are not necessarily technical but know enough on how to vet potential candidates. The interview you have to nail is the one where you are sitting in front of your prospective boss and you get into the weeds and the granular details of what you do.

I applied for my first IT job (first job in general) a few years ago and managed to get it out of about 50 people who applied. It involved a test but it was really easy, to be honest. Just some excel stuff and a general computer knowledge test. I mean, if you have a degree, I'd be worried if you couldn't answer them. Honestly, out of the 50 applicants, I bet there were some extremely skilled people they rejected because they didn't want to pay more for their wages.
I was quite young at the time, though, which definitely helped because they knew they could get away with paying me below minimum wage until I turned 21. I ended up leaving the job after 3 months because it was extremely toxic, false advertising (They already had an IT admin, they just wanted another one) and it was a family run business. Never join a company that's family run. It's fucking toxic.

IT is one of the most rewarding careers but it is one of the shittiest and hardest to get in too. Degree, training, certs, experience, sometimes even connections...you need all that and it is still hard, than the pay is so little unless you are in the engineering, devs, manager, etc position. If you like learning every year, studying, certs for death than sure. Otherwise there's other careers that pays you 6 figure with less studying, certs, and sometimes no degree.
