You know ur a band kid when u scroll through UA-cam and just look at scores for pure enjoyment. Love this piece its so energetic and graceful at the same time.
Rip Robert w smith. You wrote the first ever solo I played in a concert setting and were one of the many composers that have inspired me to write myself.
I still can't believe he passed away. I heard it from a composer friend of mine, and I didn't believe it until I saw it myself. His piece, The Great Locomotive Chase, was the first I have ever conducted on UA-cam. His legacy will be here forever, and his teachings will forever impact us all as musicians.
This was one of the songs to my most recent (and last) concert. Yeah, us in the flute section died. Half way through, we just started to fade off one by one. It’s survival of the flutist
We played this in our band last semester. At around 2:10 there's supposed to be a gong hit. Our dear auxiliary percussionist, Sera, hit it wayyyyy too loud and scared everyone in the band, including the director. Me and the other percussionists just yelled "SERA!" in response. Best moment of that semester.
I’m a bass clarinetist and my band director chose this piece! Freaking excited, bass clarinet actually has something other than the typical quarter note bass line! I’ll be noticed!
Yea I've played all three and Maelstrom is more difficult on certain parts. Nonetheless they are really fun pieces to play once you get the hang of it. I particularly like the woodwind soli. Alto sax player here.
I remember playing this piece with my band teacher a few years ago. He was literally everyone's favourite teacher and he shared happy and joyful moments with us throughout the year. Sadly, he moved away to a different school, and Into the Storm was the very last piece he conducted for us on the very last concert with him at our school. We emotionally spoke our goodbye speech to him and thanked him for the memories he made for us before we tearfully performed this piece. Everyone sincerely misses him after that night and every time I come here to revisit this piece, I think of him.
That is LITERALLY my story except not the pre-performance speech. Also, that performance (graduation) was the first one I got to perform in orchestra for (instead of his beginning band). I was likely drafted because I was the ONLY brass instrument in the school, but I did work hard on my horn to get in. Trumpet BTW.
I heard this song played by my school's previous top band and I've been trying to convince my teacher to just give us the music, not even make us play, just give us the music.

Yeah it's a piccolo and bass clarinet solo (duo?) but in my school our piccolo doesn't work so i'll be doing it on my flute. It's really hard to be on pitch!
This takes me back. I played flute in middle school and this was so fun and energizing to play. The flutes rocked the house with all that speed and intensity.
Had my students play the Tempest last year. I'm gonna order this piece and put it in front of them this year and watch their jaws drop as they at first complain about how hard it is and then watch them love it by the end of the semester. All I am saying is that I wish there was music like this when I was in middle school...
I'm playing this in band camp and we haven't gotten to the end bc we have like 9 other songs. So I'm listening to the last 5 bars over and over again because they are MAGIC.
I played Cymbals for this back in high school. I remember getting carried away with the crash-chokes and getting the attention of the band room. I miss those days, hopefully someday I'll play percussion. But for now, its chasing storms occasionally to this tune. For any that come and go, stay safe out there!
Our band director decided to continue rehearsals after quarantine so now we are going to play this song with almost 9 months of no practicing and I just love it
RIP Robert W Smith, your scores got me into liking concert band starting in high school, this song got me into like band because of the time changes, dynamics, and emotions and i never got to experience that in middle school. Thank you so much for this beautiful and striking song and into the storm made me a better timpani player then i was in middle school because yet again with the dynamics it really help me understand emotion through music. We all love you Robert W Smith. ❤❤❤
Agreed. I'm only in the 10th grade I don't know how the crap I'm supposed to play this. But let me tell you I'm pretty good at everything before measure 14. 😂
It’s my favorite song by Robert W. Smith by far, it’s such a precious song to me in so many complicated ways. I was first flute in middle school when I played this song, I absolutely loved how fast and soothingly repetitive the flute part is.
I just used this in my DnD campaign (at the request of two players who are definitely ex-orchestra kids lol) for an undead pirate battle. It worked brilliantly! What a beautiful peace!
Listening to this song makes me want to cry. It was 6th grade when I played this, a sort of iffy euphonium player who wasnt confidence in his skills. Now I am going into an arts highschool and all my time in middle school band is fading away. The middle of the song almodt made me shed tears. Remember my friends I will leave behind and the band constructor.
I love the part at 1:51 and 1:58 where it all slows down and relaxes and then the low brass comes in and then the solo The part is very magical for the first clarinets when it slows down also and flute and bass clarinet solo is awesome
Watching these videos just makes me cry...were probably not even going to do a full in person concert for a good while....and I'm going to miss when I was in my school's top band because we went to all these competitions...this wasn't one of them but still brings back memories of when my band director would get mad when someone didn't know their part after he'd gone over it multiple times or when we would go over our competition music multiple times until we were perfect even if he took all period to help a certain section on a certain part....
This song represents a hurricane. Reason being is the first part is intense which represents the first side of the hurricane. Then when the piece gets calm, it represents the eye of the hurricane where it is all calm and peaceful. Then it gets intense again representing the other side of the hurricane when it starts being chaotic again. Absolute masterpiece!
Played this freshman year, then we got a new band director. I’m a junior and he wants us to play it again next year and I’m pumped! One of my favorites pieces!
I played the timpani for this piece in 7th grade and the ending was super fun to play. we never got to perform it because of the pandemic, but probably my favorite music piece to this day.
I have to play this in band and it has haunted my nightmares and yet its not even our concert, plus the one time I am glad we have 25 trumpets they hardly get to play meanwhile us (woodwinds) have to play the entire time! we do not have enough air for this. but it is so beutiful and I love a chalenge
