Rephrygeration
By Todd Stalter
Item: 00-45001
Series: Alfred Concert Band
Grade 4
Format: Conductor Score & Parts
A dynamic concert opener or closer cast almost entirely in the Phrygian mode. The half steps that make this scale mode so unique are celebrated both in a melodic and harmonic sense, with aggressive low brass figures, crisp and rhythmic percussion, and winding passages in the woodwind. (2:50)

i feel like this would be a good piece for a movement of a marching band show
kristian we actually had this piece as the majority of our opener this year. Doesn’t really relate to the theme of Rain, but it’s a little excerpt.
we are playing this for the opener of our marching show this year
agee
This would be good in any sort of band
I feel like this would be even better in concert band. Marching seems great too though.
Xylo is so lit in this piece
Yes, unfortunately my hands would fall off.
There are about only 2 guys back in my school who I think could play this.
Fr
I would love to play the xylo part
Ive played this and it was so LIT
It’s weird to think that this piece is about keeping food at a comfortable temperature
Jake it is ?!
It’s a music pun :D based off the scale mode phygrian, this is in D phygrian (D, Eb, F, G, A, Bb, C) like minor, but flat 2nd. It sounds like refrigeration and idk if you were joking but if you didn’t know, that’s the background behind it
@@evelynlewis8057 well the name is rephrygeration
Blue Diamond true lol
Legit confused
This is the most realistic depiction of ADHD I have ever seen
as an adhd, I am realistically depicted
U can hear the Alto Sax part so clearly it's amazing (Tenor as well)
Ikr in most music recordings, the alto sax is barely heard. Sometimes it doesn’t even sound like a saxophone
Recently alto saxophones have been getting a lot more attention in music other then jazz
Yea its a little bit less in real life tho, but stil nice and juicy 😁
You can’t hear our saxophones at all 😭
Todd Stalter’s pieces are the music equivalent of crackhead energy
honestly
Sam hazo: laughs in arabesque
And I love it
While accurate, I can’t stop listening
@@nahfam2735 that song is painful
I just had a stroke looking at the sheet music and finding out the tempo is 160 bpm
not fast at all if you're in marching band
YaBoyEj YES
@@floheart1 eyy that's true our show last season was at 160bpm in 9/8, it was so fun
Julian Ganseco I agree but my band got scored superior on this piece at mpa so I can’t hate it too much. I actually miss playing it
Honestly doesn’t actually look all to bad. Except for that euph part. From my experience they don’t know what to do when they get featured and they freeze up
I know this has already been commented, but the french horns at 2:08 are FIRE
It wasn't until after listening to the piece twice and analyzing it both those times that I realized that the title "Rephrygeration" Was a pun. Future band director here guys... lmao
Max Behymer how?
TheRagingInfernape Rephrygeration, Refrigeration. See it? It says so in the description I think
TheRagingInfernape the song is based around the mode called Phrygian it’s a play on words
Ikr lol
At first I thought Phrygian was pronounced fy-grian and the pun was lost on until I figured out it was pronounced fridge-ian
Almost all of Todd Stalter's songs are very fast and sporadic 😂
Terrarian Doge thats what makes them so dope. Todd stalter is definitely one of my favorite composers
Oh you're that guy who thought Ride by Samuel Hazo was the TØP song you thought. 😂
I remember reading a comment on the score video for either counterbalance or critical mass and they basically said that Todd Stalter is a god when it comes to creating fast pieces
A piece as good as this would sound cool in Star Wars.
My high school band took this to state, I remember loving this song. We didn’t have enough percussions to play this song, so I had to play bass and suspended symbol at the same time, and switch to slapstick. Overall it was a fun experience
2:32 is soooo lit
This song was rearranged and it became the closer to my school’s marching show this year!
oh god no this is a concert piece
hi brenna
@@awakenedxxz and?? brother my school has played my chemical romance, nirvana, nine inch nails and danzon in our shows. music is flexible. not just for one concept
i would cut my toe off just to play this piece in band i love it sm
edit: please stop giving this attention 😔😔
edit 2: it’s now my senior year, my band director has finally started taking suggestions again for our final concert so this will be my fourth year in a row submitting this piece along with a few others i’ve wanted to play. will update when we get our final pieces
final update: it’s the day of our final concert, this song is a part of our program, and i’m sick. So i can’t even play the song i said i would cut my toe off for. Love my life
LOL
A little much but me too
Same
Wait wat u did?
It's an awesome piece! I'll just say that... In-person is better than the recording
i would literally kill to play this piece
My band played this last year, and we're so obssesed with it
I can’t even sightread this and I’m in eighth grade symphonic band! Amazing stuff.
Composed for my group, and we are playing it this year. Absolutely amazing :)
amazing piece, my band took it from australia to hawaii and played it for months
I love the saxes melody...❤️❤️❤️starts at 0:13😀😀😀
Yeah, as a sax player, your fingers are pretty much moving light speed lmao
I sight read the xylo part the other day it was fun
I don't know why but I am in love with this song and I'm showing it to my band director for concert season
is this pronounced like refrigeration
I know right.lmao
yeah. the name’s a music pun because the piece based on the phrygian scale
Julian Ossa i didn’t know that until like last week XD
We have to play this and I want to cry
Horn part at 1:03 and 2:08 is EPIC
fr
The French horn parts are insane!!
Idk if I will be able to play that lol
Our marching show included part of this in it as the majority of its opener. It’s very fun but a bit low difficulty for grade 4 in my opinion, but I do live in Texas so I don’t really know about the rest of the country.
This is pretty similar to other grade 4 music to me
For me this is by far the hardest song Ive ever played. But then again, The hardest piece I played up to that point was Cut to the Chase by Todd Stalter
We pkayed this last year but now we play grade 5 and up. This dong sounds and looks easy which happens when you get a grade level above.
I’m playing Trumpet in this piece and THIS PART gets me all giddy every time
i hear it 1:21
Finally a fun part for the bass clarinet
I would literally sell my left kidney to play this piece in concert band for the euphonium part.
My band is playing this for festival in March
2:38 is amazing
2:32 Sounds sooo cool
The opening to the piece sounds like an RPG battle theme and I love it
Agreed
Yoko Shimumara
0:02 at the top left it says 3 1/2 why does the first screen and thumbnail say grade 4?
we just got this piece today, i’m really excited
i might link some of my practice clips here, but idk (euphonium btw)
either way, it’s incredibly fun so far
I FINALLY GOT THE PART FOR XYLOOO 🤗🤗
goodness gracious! I love this!
#SEMPER FIDELIS #QUA PATET ORBIS #JE MAINTAN DRAI ! ♫♪ great ♫♪♫♪♫♪☺ BRAVISSIMO @/bisbis 🎶🎵🎼 great music! a well tuned ensemble that sounds like an organ ! Fabulous banding! 2:18 is sooooo good
Imagine playing this in a band with 18 people, 6 of which are percussionists… couldn’t have been my high school band…
Bro this is our marching show😩
The sixteenth notes are too fast!
Not really
No it’s made for the music style with the background of it
Oh honey.
sight read this in concert band today. it went allot better than i thought it would.
That's really gay I bet you sucked
Nahtanoj Enotsylb kinda. me and josh actually sight read it pretty well.
Geatle
Geatle ok pro
bro that timpani at 0:43
yo dis shi hard asf
This is like a lesser piece for “Ride”
Robert W. Smith writes some awesome pieces man
Wrong composer buddy
LOL WRONG COMPOSER BRO
This is Todd Stalter Buckaroo
@@Terrandor UH OH forgor lmao but i aint wrong bout the RWS writing this one is great and i love it
@@JaviDavis-k2n Dang i was readin the name when i typed this comment to i appologize yall lmaoooo
my middle schools honor band is playing this
xExotic_ Izzy stfu liar
he’s probably not lying, (he is in middle school) because I’m in 7th grade and my schools 8th grade advanced honor band is playing this
@@keditsyoutube I agree with you. I'm in the summer between my 6th and 7th grade year and I can just barely play this good
Nah yo, my eighth grade wind ensemble played this song. It was awesome!
The Grape Gachacle it’s a grade 4 piece. Colleges play this level. Maybe u played an easier version or y’all played WAY below tempo
My band teacher was going to make both the Jr. and Sr. High bands to play this, but the Jr. high band couldn't play it, so he made the Sr. High band play it with out us. I'm in Jr. High band
Well guess who’s gonna be playing this in their spring concert
Edit: It’s been 4 years. Fuck covid for taking this from me
I am a euphonium player and I don’t get to play this piece but I’m really upset because the part is actually good on this
My band is playing this, but I don’t understand why the low saxes don’t join in with everyone else that they have the same part as when they come in. They join in like 8-16 measures later. Kind frustrating
I love the sound of 0:39 it sounds so nice lol
I would drop outta band if I had to play this
Put it on double speed for chaos
I’ve never seen a bass clarinet play that high, but, ok
As a Bass Clarinetist I find how high it is kinda offensive
I’ve played higher in my band lol
I-
... the highest note is a D in the staff if I'm not mistaken. I play bass clarinet and that is a GREAT range compared to most parts. Usually my highest note in a piece is an F at the top of the staff, and I've played pieces with a pianissimo attack on a C above the staff. Or lyrical parts with a staccato B above the staff after a regular lower note. This ain't high.
I play bass clarinet in my school wind ensemble and trust me we go a lot higher 😭
I'd do anything for that kettle drum part
Base clair 1:20🔥🔥🔥🔥👌
Flutists have a great time playing this 😂
If Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov was still alive and watching this he would laughing so hard that he starts crying😂
purchase link doesn't work :((
Yeah saxes!!!!!! 🎷0:13
I've been practicing the shit out of this song
speedY KP what instrument?
im trying to master it on Trumpet, Clarinet, and Bass Clarinet lol
Nice Bassoon part
1:45
Timpani all the way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Being the only trumpet in my school band I'd be scared at 25 if I mess up
so does roland barrett he wrights killer trumpet and trombone parts
I should be fine
I feel like that this would be in the Fantasia movie-
My real dads name is Todd stalter
Some people have the same last names as others
somebody in another recording of the song said the snare part was hard but it seems pretty easy to play can somebody please explain what is hard about it
any bridge city band here?
1:17 1:21 cool
Playing this and I’m 1st tpt
Just played it again today before an honor band audition. ThT was freshman year, now I’m a senior about to graduate ☠️
why does it say 3.5 on the 1st page?
??????????
Grade 3.5 because there's not actually a standard way of measuring the grade level of pieces
@@xmorgan1123x But on the outside it says 4
6th grade band memories right here
SAY WUT, U PLAYED THIS IN 6th GRADE
Listen to this at 2x tempo, thank me later.
I lisened to it at 2x and i was like,i'm done
The ending at 2x speed gave me a heart attack
Its really cool at 1.5x speed
I have a feeling the name of the piece is pronounced refrigeration
2:16
I gotta do a calisthenics workout b4 I tackle this
when the band director leavs the room
this is amazing but how do you pronounce it thank you
It's pronounced like refrigeration, it's a pun (the piece is in D Phrygian)
Obinna Nwakwue ah thank you
0:07 1:20
0:23
why do i hear boss music
This man was having a seizure while writing the notes
Can someone tell me what a2 means?
Add 2, meaning both parts play the same thing
Qs a fluteist i had a siesiure seeing how thos is played (oh and the tempo doesnt help at all)
PogU
Anyone else think this sounds like it was sped up?
Well its not
@@alanartz How do you know?
@@kronkepus3671 cause its up to tempo
As written
@@alanartz that's not what I meant, I think this was originally recorded at a slower pace and then it was later sped up in a editing software in order to be up to the written tempo
Trumpet 1 checking in.
Hehehehehehehe
why that name though i dont understand
It's a pun because the song is in D Phrygian.
Its a play on words
Obinna Nwakwue whats dphyrgian
@@jayjusto9580 It's the 3rd mode of the major scale I believe. It's very Arabic sounding.
Ngl this is really easy compared the what my band plays go listen to the wine dark sea by John Mackey
It’s funny if you set the playback speed to x1.75
Sounds like a pokemon song
My band could never play this wtf
Haha I get it cause phrygian
