What are the costs and energy specifications of the Death Star from Star Wars? It's Imperial Engineering 101 on this episode of Because Science, now airing for the first time on the Because Science Channel. - Наука та технологія
Matt and the Game Theorists estimated about $193,000,000,000,000,000 (quintillion) for the Death Star’s cost, which fits into your range nicely.
It does because there was no acutal calculations. Just a number. Anyone can guess quintillion and be right for just about anything on that scale in the SW universe
So basically "Because Science" is now a medium for re-releasing Kyle's previously released videos?
I gues it's transfering all old vid from Nerdist to BC official
Kyle left nerdist and formed his own channel. nerdist is just milking the last remaining cents they can for the material he did that they have the rights for.

"because science" parting ways with Kyle hill, and then continuing to re-upload old videos of his, is like breaking up with someone and then still continuing to post old pictures of them on instagram.
It is more like a studio continuing to sell copies of a movie even after it no longer has contracts with those actors to make more movies. The existing movies still belong to the studio and can still be distributed.
Building a Death Star pretty much requires seizing the production capability and materials required for it. Which the Empire did. They didn't exactly pay for it. Then there is also the question of sourcing stuff that is pretty much unique to the Death Star. Like the power source and the main weapon.
Whether you buy something or steal something, it still has value. Calculating the economic cost of a Death Star is valid, even if the Empire didn't do a competitive bidding process.
The Imperium of Man:
*Yawns*. A Death Star? That's a Monday.

In a commentary track on the Star Wars Blu-ray release, George Lucas stated that ships in the Star Wars universe can't travel in straight lines while in hyperspace due to collisions with celestial objects. Thus, distance is an important factor in how quickly a ship can get from point A to point B. The Millennium Falcon's superior navigation computer allowed it to travel shorter distances between points and arrive faster.
I knew the Death Star was big but the most mind blowing part of this whole video to me was the appearance of being 45x larger than the moon in an orbit at ISS level. Wow.
Makes that scene where it blows up over endor all the better
The difference in apparent size is not so much because the Death Star is big, and more because the proposed orbit (that of the International Space Station) is very close. The average distance of the moon is ~900 times greater than the average distance of the space station.
There is no reason for the Death Star to ever be that close to its target, by the way. At space station distance, very little of the Earth would be visible. The famous "Blue Marble" photo was taken from a distance of 33,000 kilometers, about 79 times the distance of the space station.
I've also wondered about the "cost" of Federation starships on Star Trek even though they exist in a post scarcity economy.
As someone stressed with exam prep this helps relieve pressure thanks kyle👌
"Original air date 2015"
"Now airing for the first time"
Pick one.
Both are correct you pleb.
@@Minizemful not what it sounds like though
"original air date" implies it already was shown: it was made in 2015 but never shown
now airing for the first time implies this is the first time it was shown: surely you can even look at "aired in 2015" and "aired first time just now" and go "clearly they need to choose a different term" rather than call someone who's rightfully pointing this out a pleb
Cool video, though I would assume the Imperial cost was much less, between super advanced tech and the near infinite amount of resouces laying around in a Galaxy, building one would be relatively easy, the superlaser on the other hand
that you re upload a video from 5 years ago just show's that kyle is the channel
1:02 Alder"gone" was right there
Great video man
I know this is from 2 years ago but I wanted to add something. The Death Star has a giant Kyber crystal that amplifies energy that is being directed into it. After a bit, it’s the fire out at a greater intensity. Kyber crystals aren’t really energy sources but rather energy amplifiers. There is still an external power source rather than the crystal itself powering the machine.
I know this is from 10 months ago, but what does "amplify energy" mean? Like, it takes a certain amount of energy and magically turns it into a bigger amount of energy?
@@patrickd8654 no, not magically. It absorbs energy and then intensifies it. Here is the cut arc from clone wars ua-cam.com/video/TdaXc2wzwv4/v-deo.html

@@simpleyetcomplex
Obi Wan says, "The crystal isn't just absorbing energy, it's intensifying the charge."
OK, but that's just a technobabble way of saying "A certain amount of energy goes in and a bigger amount of energy comes out." This violates conservation of energy. Unless the crystal is giving up some of its own mass to "amplify the charge." But in that case, we are back to requiring a Mount Everest of fuel, like this video said.

And according to Robot Chicken that thing wasn't even fully paid off yet so God knows what that's going to do Darth Sidious's credit lol
it's destruction put a entire galaxy into a depression
@@patricksmith9700 so it wasn't insured ? lol
Apparently there are ~68 million 'life-supporting' planets in the Milky Way, if we analogously set the size similar to the Star Wars galaxy and with the DS's cost at $193,000,000,000,000,000, that's about ~$3bil per life-planet on average (from tax?). Considering some planets (i.e. Coruscant) have populations up to a trillion, it doesn't seem too be too much of a financial burden on a galactic society. 160km diameter worth of materials on a galactic scale is not even noticeable...they could literally just mine the core of a non-life planet for example...
Instead of blowing up Alderaan itself, could it instead cause all of the energy stored in the planet itself (the energy stored as heat and such) to release all at once to cause the explosion?
More important than school education
1:45
"The most powerful laser on Earth doesn't even come close."
Wait, are you saying real life humans don't have the technology to blow up a planet? Amazing insight.
The energy used to fire the Death Star comes from kyber crystals.

About the power source of the death star, could a "miniature" rotating black hole with an event horizon of a few meters account for it's firepower ? The mechanism would be to throw matter at it, which will be superheated and through its interaction with the black hole intense magnetic field created by the plasma rotating at high speeds around it before being swallowed will then be expelled at very close to light speed in a higly concentrated beam with immense power (in fact this is the very same mechanism of a gamma ray burst or a quasar). And a black hole with a several meters event horizon, while being small enough to be the energy source we see in Return of the Jedi, has a mass similar to Jupiter or so, and with the 10 to 30% mass to energy conversion efficiency of the gravitationnal field of a black hole, it would be enough to generate the 10^32 joules needed to explode a planet. Plausible to you ? The only backdraft is that you will get not one but two beams sent in opposite directions, which we don't see in the movies (but maybe it's reflected to double the power of the primary beam)
Depending on which economic study I use, huh?
Love it.
I have a pretty good idea that you guys could make.

Me who watched Matpats video 5 years ago: Ah a remake I see.
I was wondering about Starkiller base in Force Awakens. There is an atmosphere on the planet. But would a lot of that atmosphere be destroyed when the weapon fires? That's a lot of energy blasting through it.
For the most part, yes. But try not to think about it.
If the power output of Starkiller was at all accurate (as in, can destroy MULTIPLE planets at a time), Hux and the fleet in the firing ceremony would've been vaporized just from pure light energy being emitted by such a blast column. Said energy would also be ionizing and would scorch the surface and render it uninhabitable.
Think of an atomic blast fallout times septillions, if not more.
Guess am second, How do you edit your vids kyle? Could you make a vid on that
He left this channel and started his channel called Kyle Hill
Kyle got a new job as an imperial royal guard.
Palpatine: "hey crayola help me shut this vent yeah reach up there with your staff of ra."
You can pull celestial bodies having the necessary materials you need to build, also , maybe some dark energie engineering by the way , I still waiting an answer on that nanobots can create water or not.
This old video shows its age since they answered Han Solo's Kessel run quote about parsecs in the movie "Solo: A Star Wars Story". Basically the Kessel run was 18 parsecs long because smugglers had to avoid The Maw. Solo, by doing it in 12 parsecs, lets everyone know he flew threw The Maw.
The more you know.
Could you do a episode of invader Zim, the episode where he creates a engine to move planets around and break down the science and way it could possibly happen?
so yoooung
it's so cute. Either his voice still hadn't matured or the audio compression they used back then made him sound like a late blooming teenager.
But in the rebels TV show it is told that the death star uses kyber crystals and in star wars kyber crystals can amplify energy running through them will this not reduce the cost of energy production
How much would a Death Star cost?
Kyle: "One hundred gatrazillion bamillion"
Read the video description block; this isn’t a “new look”, this was originally aired on 3/19/2015. A number of his earlier shows have been resubmitted; I’m assuming it’s in some way related to The Facility.

Hello Kyle, I’ve recently started to watch this anime called “terra formars” and I was wondering if you could make a video talking about it and explaining how realistic the anime really is, I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one who wants to hear an expert opinion on the matter.
just go to ua-cam.com/users/KyleHillScience instead of these vids.
If you guys want to see Kyle, he has quit this channel, now he has his own channel called "Kyle Hill", go watch him if you want to.
Not only would a death star cost death, but would want to be half-ghost human with channeling ectoplasm chaotic and cost.
You just used my Energy calculation for blowing up planets I posted at the Usenet in the 1980ths starting one of the first Scifi-Sciente-Discussion back then. Well, I didn't use the Mt. Everest periphrase but everything else is pretty close except I used something like "energy corresponds to 7km³ of antimatter".
And yes, I was making fun of star wars back then and even joked that putting out so much energy in such a short time frame might collaps the beam into a black hole and swallowing the death star while firing. Which actually was a joke, the energy density would be a couple of dimensions below the required schwarzschild radius. But not by too much. Lets say the Death star would have to blow up jupiter then it might be swallowed by its beam-generated black hole actually.
I feel honored that my old calculations are still used today..

Fun fact: there was a german petition going around few years back, trying to get the country to build a deathstar. It got close to a million or maybe even over a million signatures. So the politicians had to release a statement. Fun times

How much of Mount Everest is needed? From sea level to peak or all the way down in the ocean?
C'mon, you coulda said "Aldergone"
thats exactly what Im thinking
U need to use labor credit system to build large works like death star. Market economy can only finance projects up to $50 trillion in total. Anything other than that , return of investment curve tanks to near 0 so investment in such works also tanks to near 0.
U need to use labor credit system to build death star.
.....You could have said "Alderon....More like....Alder-gone 😎." And I'll never forgive you.
I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought it.
The one thing im missing from kyles new channel..... the background music
The BFG 10K in DOOM Eternal will be an interesting topic.
May not be as powerful as the death star laser but it sure is strong enough to punch a hole through into the core of Mars :D
Four ultra-tech considerations to make: antimatter power, hyperdrive & antigrav technologies, and supernova remnant mining. Now how much is it, really?
Oh how I miss Kyle writing backwards on a clear sheet of plexiglass. Pickel Rick!!!
This isn't really related to the video, but I have a question. If energy is equal to mass and light has no mass, how can light have energy ?
Oh neato. Cool stuff
That amount of money...
I haven't seen anywhere except Adventure Capitalist
This isn’t even bringing up the probably millions of employees within this single mega mall. They would have to only pay salaries beyond the stars, but food and medical supplies since there’s no possible way anyone in there have seen their families in years.
How many janitors does this ship have, cause the empire has to pay enough money to keep oxiclean in business for a long, long time.
Do they have decent plumbing, how do they get rid of waste in the Death Star? They can’t just float it out there right? Imagine the rebel attack on the ship but every scene it’s just thousands of tons of junk hitting everybody’s windshield. Those window wipers have to go crazy.
You can save on materials by cutting the railings
only by watching old videos of him do you realise how much Kyle has changed
Glad to know that I’m not the only nerd out there. I feel right at home
1:00 really missed a trick there: you could have said "Alderaan? Its all but gone, now!"
Damn. Palpatine was rollin.
Yes parsecs are a measure of distance, and why is it note worthy is because he took something was a "set" distance and did it in a shorter distance.
Id say it's akin to saying you did the Daytona 500 in 300 miles.
It is a brag about how he did what most consider unimaginable, he went through the maw, and survived.
Wouldn't it be easier to find a metal enriched planet and just convert that into a death star?
I think the easiest way would be to take a large space ship, position it near an asteroid belt, and then mine the asteroids for the materials you need.
Do this with a few ships, turn them into modules, then put them together when they're ready and move most of the crew from the finished modules to the other ones to help, while the remaining crew members add the final touches to the connected modules.
Maybe, if you're planet can get back that energy after it was released.
Aldur-gone....come on, it's right there!!! 🤣🤣
The force must be strong with me, I don't normally catch these videos 11minutes after upload.
We need a video on how much does Matrioshka brain costs
How did they get enough air to create a breathable atmosphere inside the Death Star? It's too large to have been constructed on a planet and launched into space. We actually see it being built in space but is it even possible to move that much air? And what would happen to the host planet whose atmosphere was stripped for the construction of the Death Star? An interesting question no one seems to be asking
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it until I die
The purpose of the Kessel Run being measured in Parsecs would’ve made sense if the Solo movie explained it as this: The run is a timed distance run for who can get the furthest in a span of time
Solo was a missed opportunity to make Han Solo not only one of the greatest pilots, but something of a rally driver at the same time
I think of the Robot Chicken Palpatine where he said if he can get a huge loan after the Death Star was Destroyed.
Well, they wouldn't mind that stuff on planets, they'd mine it straight from asteroids and such which are already in space and more easily accessible and have higher condensation of raw materials. Would cut a bunch of costs down but yeah, would still cost a cartload, or billion.
"Alde-destroyed?" How did we miss the obvious pun of "Alde-GONE"?
It hurts my soul that he chose not to use "Alderaan is now All but gone from memory."
Is there a possibility to use the sun energy for a deadly beam?
Was this a cut episode or a Pilot or something for Because Science? This is obviously very old and made before they really established a lot of the feeling and tropes the show had.
