RAAF Mirage 3 Crash at Darwin, 27 May 1985

- A RAAF Mirage suffered a compressor stall during final approach at Darwin, Australia. The pilot ejected safely and the aircraft landed on the mud flats, seemingly intact but in reality, suffered extensive damage and which would certainly have been fatal had the pilot not ejected.
With thanks to Australia's Channel 7 and Channel NBN (Newcastle) for broadcasting the story. - Наука та технологія
That particular aircraft A3-36 stayed in Darwin and eventually the aviation museum there until 2000 when it was lifted by Australian ARMY Chinook to RAAF Tindal where the aircraft was cleaned up and repainted for trucking back to the museum. Was an incredible sight to see the aircraft slung under the Chinook when it arrived at the Tindal 75 Squadron Paint Shop.
24 days later, 20 Jun 1985, A3-89, piloted by FltLt Ian Davidson, disappeared west of Darwin during a night intercept mission. Neither pilot or plane where found. RIP always mate.
Hi Craig i lost my buddy Craig Macklemann who flew A3-40 which was my father's friend Big Jim Flemmings plane off the Coast the RAAF tried to cover up everything but we all believe he was killed due to friendly fire !!! regards RIP !!!
@@peterkirgan2921 Hi Peter. I remember that incident and followed the contention with the truth. Davo’s incident was the same. I spoke to the female controller from 114CRU after she was sent to RAAFSTT in Wagga as an Admino soon after. I pleaded with her to tell me what happened. She was reticent to share but it became clear it wasn’t pilot error. Why was she suddenly an Admino?
76 flying out of 116 - geez, crazy times those.
Was thinking that myself.....
Dassault: maker of bizjets that sunk ships, or were fitted with afterburners.
Who can be surprized its Mirage jets can land themselves?
amazing strong old mirage
Curious as why the dag chute had deployed.
Later Air Vice Marshal John Quaife. 🙂
I was hoping for some video footage of this incident!? Not a news update😲😤😥
Could bleed speed in a turn like no other jet! Just couldn't get it back is all, haha
the pilot is safe that is what matters ! ! !
ps : mirage III is not made of aviation grade aluminium it is made of steel that explains why it appears to look almost in on piece thanks 4 sharing : )
There was plenty of aluminium in her
It was not made of steel.
Some steel frame components, but it is mainly aluminium. It looks relatively intact, because it is.
Hahaha hahahaha hahaha made of steel
I'm surprised that it's still intact!!! I believe A3-36 is a static museum piece somewhere! I love these a deadlier & faster platform than the hornet!! Quaife & the Late jim flemming were my superiors !!! Lol
mirage III and mirage 2000 are not made of aviation grade aluminium they are made of steel anyway you're right very few jets or planes ended up like this one after a crash :)
Thanks for that vei I infact am an ex raaf flt leuitenant wth 75 squadron th as t flew these! A3-17 was my office we were based in williamtown nsw near Newcastle and were deployed also @ Butterworth in malaysia@ the time mid 1980s
Its just 3 months before i was born in august 1985.
Looks like it landed itself ; ) Remember being on Singleton army base up on a hill about 12am and these guys flying overhead dropping 500lb bombs in the plain below. Flairs were up and it was quite the light show... as a young fella better than any Sydney NY eve celebrations as you got the vibrations through the seat of your pants.
Yep used to go to Singlton with 4flt FAC observer hill...the mirages would buzz you after their mission.....you could see on top of the wings as they came at you. Spent many years om Mirage and f18 maint but 4 flt was best fun
Pretty sure that’s the airframe on display at the Aviation Museum in Darwin.
Thats correct, I was there yesterday looking at the damaged done to it which wrote it off (Cat5) the guys at 75 Squadron did a good job restoring it to static display.
@@timorvet1 how is the museum in DN holding up?
I miss Darwin
@@youwebz Its doing well, Angela, Owen & Steve (both ex RAAF) are moving the museum along at a good pace even with the effects of covid 19 still lingering. Visitor numbers had dropped off with the closed borders and the museum was forced to close in the initial stages of the pandemic, it has since reopened and visitor numbers seem to be on the rise again. Recently they had these huge ceiling fans installed in the hanger and they have made a huge difference as im sure you could appreciate. I asked the guys installing them, what the view of the B-52 looked like from that great height in their cherry picker, they said bloody awesome but lots of dust on it!
Far out! .. thanks from NZ✈️ 👍🇳🇿
The old sar squirrels before the government privatised it & gave the contract to the national safety council of Australia initially using bell 212 & 412 fleet.
Good ole Dassault. Built like a brick!
Beautiful aircraft. I saw one of these RAAF Mirages at an airshow at Whenuapai Airbase in Auckland NZ back in the 80's, it was an awesome display of this aircraft's capability.
Flew like one without that big noise generator
What happened to the Mirage jets Australia had. Never seen them in a Museam.
Shame. Would of made intresting show pieces.
There’s one in Williamtown:

I know of at least a second example being preserved, a twin seater that was formerly used for tests:
www.saam.org.au/mirage-iiid/
This particular one is in the Aviation Museum in Darwin, saw it about 10 years ago.
@@jetaddicted thanks mate.
Closest avaiation museam near me is one in Bull creek. They have a Lancaster bomber there. But sadly no Mirage jets.
That exact Mirage IIIC is on display inside RAAF Darwin base
A lot were put into storage for a time and after that got sold on to other countries!
From Pakistan 🇵🇰🇵🇰
abhinundan
Now they are flying in Pakistan air force 😀😀. Old is gold according to Pakistan....😂😂😂
Didn't know Australian air force had mirages....now they buy american..
we still buy french (Dassault Falcon 7X), and swiss (Pilatus PC-21), and Italian (Alenia C-27J Spartan), and British (Hawk 127)
@@davidewhite69 True, but your government should have bought the rafale instead of the F35, its cheaper and does the job as well.
@@lebaillidessavoies3889 I worked on the Mirage IIIOs in the RAAF, we got well and truely shafted by the French when it came to spare parts/support equipment prices. the RAAF will never buy a French fighter again because of that. At one time the French bput an embargo on exporting spare parts for the Mirage too Australia because we balked at their absurd prices
@@lebaillidessavoies3889 you can't compere the two The f35 is far superior
@@carlgriffiths8482 f 35 overrated overpriced junk
Looks like a pretty bad design for a plane. Even for it's time.
Delta wings are superb flyers. They are still being used today
They build 1400 of them, some still operating. Keep writing nonsense
Pilot would gave survived easily. The plane is very much intact, even standing on its landing gear.
Virtually stall proof delta design is inherently stable and would have just floated down minus pilot.
Pilot did what he thought he needed to do at that moment but likely could have still put it down. On the runway.
The required actions for engine failure - eject. The engine -out glide speed for the Mirage was 250kt. One RAAF pilot landed two different Mirages after engine failures, saving millions for the RAAF and was very strongly censured, he was taken out of jets and sent to VietNam to fly Cessna 180s on FAC.
Yep very fast glide speed, I heard the deadstick at RAAF Laverton was 300KIAS. Must be a hell of a sink rate.
"Just floated down" hahaha
I would love to see you at an hydrogen bomb test:
"Why are you all standing so far away? When it goes off just put your arms out and ride the shockwave to safety" haha
@@retix11 absolutely, I witnessed this Mirage crash and along with the residential homes there are 2 main roads before the runway. He was hailed a hero for diverting it into the mangroves
