A lot of the Australian Mirage IIIs are still in service with Pakistan after they were sold to them after being retired. They're going to serve for a few years yet.
Still under operation by Pakistan Airforce and upgraded them with IFR, Air to ground upgraded weapons and glass cockpit features has been added under Rose III project. Thanks to Australians friends for providing these beauties to PAF.
@@galvinstanley3235 Yes, but the Mirage III have been developed and born way before the F16. In a reportage, engineers even explained the fact it was the aircraft which inspired the f16.
Ron Haack stated that he flew one of the last Mirages into Woomera in 1979. I know the Mirage was still in service in 1988 for I saw a great display of the Mirage at the 1988 Bicentennial Airshow at Richmond.
Is the missile on the centreline a Matra 530, that you see in the thumbnail? That is most logical, but the winglet profiles don't look quite like the diagrams l've seen.
There were different variants of Matra 530. Depending on the variants/versions the design was changing as well. The one on the thumbnail look like an Exocet antiship missiles, if I'm not mistaken. Left and right are Matra 550 magic II.
Tradition or political influences ? That's not really the same thing. The Mirage III demonstrated in real conditions high performances level and lethality, but being much cheaper to buy and to maintain, than the heavy fighter jets. That's obviously what attracted the customers to it.
Not perhaps, it's still the most successful French fighter jet so far, in terms of victories, as well as of sales. 1400+ have been build for a wide range of countries around the world.
Mirage 3 is an excellent interceptor but not with agility as what the narrator said. There is a difference between an interceptor and a dogfighter a c. For this reason the French manufacturer design and built the Mirage F1 which full fill the role of a dog fighter and ground attack fighter a c.
@Homoprimatesapiens The Mirage III slaughtered other fighter jets back then in dogfights and close combats. Delta wings are full of advantages over conventional ones back then. Even nowadays, a canards delta wings are beasts in dogfights.
Well the Mirage III nominal lifespan is estimated at 1,500 flight hours. RAAF pushed them waaaay beyond that, some Australian Mirage flew over 4,000 flight hours.
Why did Australia buy the Mirage in the first place? Were there other aircraft from other countries considered at the time? They are short in range and not really a multi role aircraft.
Good question. I was thinking of the Hawker Hunter, a contemporary of the Mirage. The Hunter might have been a bit slower but it was a good all rounder and had a very long service life, especially with the Singapore and Swiss air forces.
Has anyone an idea why the RAAF didn't deploy the Mirage to Vietnam? If they'd flown it out of Udon in Thailand, it could have helped a great deal with those pesky MIGS the Americans were having trouble with. True Gun-fighters being in short supply with the USAF. And the USN only having the Crusader. An inquiring mind seeks answers.

Yeah mines one of them A3-17,
@@peterkirgan2921 Were you a Mirage pilot?
I was a RadTech at the time the Mirage was retiring, there is a high possibility that the Cyrano radar in the background has some of my work on it.

pretty cool to see that the jets my grandfather helped build out lived him.
The problem with these fighters is that it still needs an external jamming pod, while even the F-16 has it built into the jet.

I loved the mirage 111. Dad spent a lot of time working on them. It is a pity that the French did not allow us to use it in Vietnam.
A fast aircraft - I achieved over 800 knots IAS low level - was hot and noisy. Loved the 30 mm cannons.
Did you know BAZZ Turner from 3 sqn Butterworth and 77 sqn Willytown ??
매력적인 비행기 입니다
My grandfather built the landing gear/wheel assemblies as part of the Australian mirage project.
I Love Mirage IIIE ❤❤❤
One 😊❤ of my favorite aus jet's.

Yes he probably made a mistake on the year - it would have been 1989 - the final flight on Feb 8, 1989, (A3-101) into Woomera for storage.
1989
The Mirage 5PA3 were the ones fitted with the AM.39 EXOCET on the centerline.
Great looking plane.
Cool plane! like a dart
That's actually the name given to the Mirage F1, which looks like a dart even more.
BAZZ Turner test flew A3 - 44 , - 3 , -42 during 1981 post R4 service

Interesting that they broke with tradition and went with the French.

This fighter is obsolete,it couldn't take on any other fighter in the air. What's the point of an air force if you don't even have a chance in the air?
@@galvinstanley3235 An obsolete fighter with one the greatest kills ratio ever scored ? Greatest kills ratio ever scored in the shortest time ever.

Im pretty sure 1 in 3 of these were lost in service, the number of Australian pilots killed in these things is staggering

I think the Mirage was heavily upgraded in the late 80's but I could be wrong.
It was cheap and Australia had no threats.
