The amount of detail regarding the placement of the thumb made me laugh. It is an important distinction to make though.
Back to Yan. When him and Aljo ran into each other at UFC 280, they were joking around and having fun. Not a guy who holds grudges once the competition is over which is very admirable in an athlete. That last video I saw of him confronting Cejudo over the potato nickname was a hilarious and wholesome moment as well. He strikes me (no pun intended) as a family man and a nice person outside of competition.
Merab has been trying to inject politics into this fight all week, and Yan wanted nothing to do with it. He's been training and competing since he was 8 years old, and its obvious he just wants to compete without that drama. He's not a politician or a soldier, and blaming him for the actions of his government makes as much sense as blaming Randy Couture for the American invasion of Iraq. It's stupid.
As a fight fan, I'm with Yan. I watch UFC to get away from politics and the noise. It's ruined every other sport for me, and Dana has been really good at keeping that shit away from his baby. This was a miss though.

The beef started during Yan vs Aljo 1 fight week. Merab was taunting Yan and his team every time they crossed paths and Yan mostly stayed calm and didnt react. Same thing was during Yan Aljo 2 fight week and Yan was getting more and more irritated. Also most Georgians can also speak Russian as its a second language in Georgia and Merab was saying some "not so nice" stuff in russian. Also there are political-geographical factors at play since Russia invaded Georgia in 2008 etc etc.. That been said - the matchmaking was ON POINT in this one :)
