My sisters funeral was on the 30th January 2024 she passed with sepsis on NYE 2023 , bless her, she had drawn up her own funeral plan and this was her chosen song....since that day , Its constantly on my mind, I hear it , I feel the emotional memories but so thankful that Our Carol chose this beautiful, dramatic song. It certainly makes the back of my neck and arms tingle and shiver. Thank you to Elbow for producing such a beautiful song it blows my mind every time I hear it ❤
Hello my beautiful Sister, Yes God bless our dear Sster Carol for bringing this hauntingly beautiful song to our attention, it is amazing that many people have mentioned that this song has been used at funerals, if you truly listen to the words, it mentions 'seeing the light'. Love you both all the world❤❤
We love this song and sadly my beautiul husband Martin died in April and this was the only song he asked for at his funeral - I had it played as he came into the chapel it felt so right....miss you so much my darling xxxx
Loved this tune already but was on the radio when i got back in my car at the hospital after saying goodbye to my beloved Dad for the final time...bless him !
Claire music is so powerful for memories. In 1998 heard my Dad had died, got in my car turned on radio, on it was “The Living Years” by Mike and the Mechanics. Cried then, and have cried every time I’ve heard it since🥲. But now I can see his smile through the tears. Take care.
@@doraldeddy1836 Thank you...and believe it or believe it not we had THAT track as part of the music for our wedding vows..! Hubby had 'stuff' with his Dad and it paved the way....x
We chose this song for my Mum's funeral when she passed in Dec 2018. She loved it so much. I listened to it again today with tears in my eyes as its her birthday .
thank you for all of your beautiful messages....mu hubby died 2 yrs ago and tomorrow is the anniversary of his funeral. He always said when he heard this song it made him cry because he thought of me and how much i meant to him....i loved him since we met in 1986 and still do..miss you Martin always will xxxx
Bernadette Ainsley sorry for your loss life will go buy but memories will last keep safe and love the rest of you life no matter what comes but your loss stays as your love stays xx
A song that defines why we love music and why it brings a mixture of emotions. Empowerment, courage against the odds, loving life as best as you possibly can and just an absolute ball of energy and thrill!
Its the dream if every band/singer to write and release an anthem... This my friends is one of the top five ever written. I get goosebumps every time I hear it
My Nan said she wanted this at her funeral when it came out. Made me tear up a lot. She’s still here now. She’s 97 and dementia has fully kicked in. She knows who I am but if I go to hers with my mum, she recognises us both but asks how long we’ve known each other for. She retreats back to her 20’s and says things like “oh how funny seeing you both here! We must go for dinner together tonight!” All the while she’s in her bed, frail as a dawn. We play this to her now and she faces us with confusion, aggression and denial. I understand that it’s how it goes. Another song is Coldplay fix you. Because when my mum came home (8 years ago when they Deterioration began, this was on the radio. My poor mum sobbed like no sob I’ve ever seen.) Music is beautiful and holds STRONG in the heart and mind.
I have also requested it to be played at my funeral It is a beautiful song by a great singer and I am also an OAP The Words are full of hope and love for all my loved ones who I leave behind but who I will watch over them and know we will meet again God Bless your Family x
It's time to throw them curtains wide n open up cos we seen to much darkness these last few months n we will beat this we are a family n stick together to help each other now let's open up and see the light
Couldn’t agree more , you would be hard pushed to tell the diff between the recorded version and live one . Sign of a true singer. As a side note why do female violinists look so beautiful?
This was my sister's wedding entrance song on the beach in Thailand back in 2019. To be honest I hadn't heard it before, but now it's one of my favourite songs. Great memories as well
Coming up on my 10th anniversary since this was played at my wedding ,few highs, few lows, birth of a beautiful daughter inbetween..this will always fill me with joy
Wow! We were there, it was such a hot day, the music was absolutely out of this world. The biggest crowd ever!! Can’t wait to go back when the world returns to ‘normal’ 🤗🤗🤗
Top man his voice is like no one out there u have to listen to understand the lyrics or it's pointless he has an old soul in his voice I think he is flawless,to all the ones who would not work with him,he never needed any of them ❤❤
Can’t keep me old eyes off the violinists…. Wish I was 25 years younger 😂 class song Mr fellow Manc Garvey and a top performance from the band. Cracking lead guitar and tone.
Same here. As an Aussie this song was long forgotten to me. And then discovered it at the Queen's Platinum Jubilee concert - which I thought was OK. And then I found the extended versions from various festivals. Wow what an amazing song. And this version is close to the greatest sing-along song I've seen. I cried for no particular reason - just such an emotion laden song/lyrics as someone now on the wrong side of 60.
I can't believe I forgot this song for 3 years until I recognised it in a BGT comedian compliation in 2018 when I was 13 and it took me 4 years to finally find it after watching the Platinum Jubilee concert on BBC iPlayer and this song is amazing and I get goosebumps listening to it
For the last week this brilliant song has been played on Irish radio stations and it never gets old and it never will, I do think it will always stand the test of time just like the Foo fighters song Times Like These.
The ending to this, and the ending to ‘Hey Jude’ (The Beatles} can last for hours, and rightly so! Absolutely belter of a song that will never grow old.
I was there at their first gig at the ' Pin ' in Stubbins , they were a bit hit and miss, but saw them a few weeks later at the ' Hounds ' in Tottington, what a transformation, awesome.
My song when I walked down the Isle 23/04/21 with 13 guests due to covid restrictions, and last night we finally had a party where it was our 1st dance song 🥰

A song that defines why we love music and why it brings a mixture of emotions. Empowerment, courage against the odds, loving life as best as you possibly can and just an absolute ball of energy and thrill!
“So throw those curtains wide” is a very powerful lyric. It can bring you out of a bad place and start to enjoy life again.
This is an explosion of positive energy, try to get the meaning of of it.
Another is Aha Take on me acoustic version, ...”it’s no better to be safe than sorry”. Just thought I would share. ❤️
Slam, dunk da funk! Is also a magical lyric for me.
Up there with Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush "Don't give up"
It’s about pissflaps

British Exceptionalism. Don't let them tell you otherwise.

This needs to be re-released as it would smash the tunes these days
"Kiss me like a final meal" is quite possibly the greatest lyric ever. Just despairingly beautiful.
Like the first 6 weeks of a new relationship, aaaah those were the days
Matt...truly a beautiful comment!🙏
You should check out some of Paddy McAloon's lyrics I if you think that's good.
"Kiss me like we die tonight" is stronger I think
Great that this was part of the platinum Jubilee
The pain you feel today is the strength you feel tomorrow.
Yeah,as long as "today " doesn't repeat in " every day " !
