The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Kids these days don’t know what real singers sound like. This is real singing!
Levi Stubbs had the lions voice of Motown.
I'm a white man born in Kentucky in 1967......I wished I could have experienced seeing some of their music live....this is as good as it gets...
The 4 Tops were built to last they can sing anything
Them the Temptations and Jackson 5 were the best we’re the best acts Motown

The Temptations constantly rotated members The Four Tops never did
What I like bout Four Tops was they never had any drama on their group-no drugs, no alcohol etc. plus the fact that they didn’t changed lineups
They were basically “the perfect vocal group”. Motown offered Levi a solo deal, as well as a lead role in a movie, but he turned both down because of his loyalty to the group. They will always be my favorite group. ❤️
There were some drugs and alcohol. Levi possessed and consumed cocaine and weed, Obie was a heavy smoker and drinker. Doesn’t take away their greatness as a group though
@@teddyj.3198 They knew how to handle it more so than others.....
I miss this kind of music. Today's music is crap! Loved the motown sound, Four Tops, Supremes, Ronnettes, The Temptations, and the many many more there was. I don't even listen to today's music. I love the oldies!
@@kathleentinley7261 todays music is not crap at all. You’re just looking in the wrong places
Levi Stubbs has the best voice on Motown and that’s saying a lot!
Yes I think so - David R comes close - but tonight I think its Levi. Might change my mind tomorrow.
Berry Gordy said that they didn’t need two leads that’s how great Levi Stubbs was.
@@razorbackfilms they only had 1 true lead singer that's why!
and david ruffin of the temptations
Levi’s voice is so powerful! The 4 Tops are the only Motown group that didn’t break up and kept all its original members
Levi gets even more handsome 💙
This was during a time when the list of talented groups and solo-artists were just everywhere, the 60's and 70's actually defined talent and musical history for us still to this day. Some artists from an earlier time transitioned into these times as well and carried their awesome talent into the future as well, like Judy Garland, Tony Bennett, Elvis, Sinatra and a few others, but the 60's and the 70's really seen an explosion of amazing singers, songwriters and musicians WOW!!! You cant even name them all😮
If you'd ever seen Levi and the Tops live in their heyday, you'd know how powerful his voice was. All muscle.
I did, in the relatively intimate venue of a cinema in Southampton, UK, 1971.
Forever seared into my memory. 🙏
@@citizen1163 do tell what do you remember??
I saw the Temps and the Tops in Cleveland in the early 80s. Best concert ever.
Levi....his voice was the most memorable... ever....
Very cool and having Mr Sullivan banter with this great singing group too!
Wow, Levi really powered through that medley
Sad to see them all gone they were at the top of list when it came to motown
My dad remembers watching Ed Sullivan every Sunday night as a kid
The Tempts were fantastic but the Tops just have something special. I can't put my finger on it.
No lip synching on this love it
BERNADETTE!! I love me some Four Tops!
“Show me that step, I wanna learn that step”. - Gotta love Ed Sullivan ❤️.
wow! you got a nice smile girl
I thought that was so funny and cute too 💖
Oh, that Boogaloo?
I hear you Duke hitting that top note.
simon sez Under rated!
Thank God for you tube and the radio stations that play the oldies! Love the Four Tops!
I'd kill for a voice like Levi's
All of them are so handsome, especially Levi. No wonder Aretha was crazy about him.😆
Levi Stubbs voice is so beautiful.
Bernadette, I want you because. . I need you to live! Whoa that always gives me chills.
Of all the male R&B groups, Levi is king as a lead, so much soul and power.
I love all of the Tops; and I especially enjoy watching Obie because he always seems to be thoroughly enjoying performing. That big smile!
Never heard Levi and Tops sing "Climb Every Mountain." It's amazing! I KNEW Levi had an incredible voice, but NOW, I know he's the greatest to come from Motown. ❤
Best TV show ever. More stars than the universe!
YES HE WAS AND THEY SAID..THEY COULD NOT DANCE BUT LEVI WAS THE BOMB..
Even though I'm a 80s baby both of my parents came up in the 60s and turned me on to Motown. I'm very grateful to be of a different generation and have an a appreciation for this music.
Now that’s rich Soul 😊
If that performance doesn't give you goosebumps, then nothing will!
When Levi sang "Climb Every Mountain" I got head-to-toe chills and tears in my eyes. The most exquisite voice ever.
Yes!!! Yes me too ❤️ his voice invokes such emotions.
One of the best vocal groups to come out of the 1960’s. Three out of the four have since passed and May they Rest In Peace. Levi Stubbs was one of the best lead singers of any group. God bless them all.
no, the best!
Why is life so damn sad? Looking back now at these vids from the 50s, 60s, 70s There was something so really special about those times, a simplicity, a calmness of spirit, it wasn't complicated the way it is today. There was a feeling of hope that tomorrow would be a better day despite some troubles that existed in those times too. But there was a distinctly different feeling in the air back then when you compare life today with the general feeling that videos like this one exude. Watching this video makes me feel so happy that it hurts so bad. Life makes feel so sad, like crying, just knowing that those precious times will never come again. I get up in the 70s, and there is absolutely no mistaking that life then was so much better than it is today. today we have so much more, and at the same time we have a lot less, so to speak.
In 1973 for example, we only had between 5 - 8 channels - 5 good reception ones on any given day. But there was always a really good cartoon, show, movie, documentary on every single one of them. Today we have 600 channels give or take, and there is hardly anything of good quality to watch on any of them. It's so depressing that instead of progressing, we have actually regressed, even with all of the advanced technology we have today. If technology is really so good, then why are people more depressed than ever before? Depression, anxiety, eating disorders, addictions, suicide, divorce, all of these things are on the rise, and rising faster with every passing year.
We've lost that simplicity that existed in the decades done by. We are out of touch with ourselves and the world around us. And we can't seem to find our way back, hence the escapist behaviours that people indulge in like never before i.e., drugs, alcohol, for addiction, eating disorders, rarely is anything done in moderation anymore - it's all about excessive escapist, coping mechanism behaviours in a n effort to somehow take just enough of the edge off to keep ourselves from jumping off the edge of a cliff just 1 more day. This life that we are living in today is terrifying and wee are all in it together, and clueless what to do about it. And then on top of all that we have serious increases in catastrophic climatic weather events occurring like never before, and unprecedented succession and intensity, all over the world: hurricanes, tornadoes, droughts, floods, temperature extremes, rising sea levels, at risk of extinction of animals, destruction of the environment, mysterious illnesses, viruses i.e., COVID, destruction of our forests, war everywhere and getting worse i.e., Russia's Holocaust Part II., and the list goes on and on and on.......
Sorry for all of this negativity, but I cannot ignore or deny what I see and feel every single day.Thank God I grew up in perhaps the last, best decade/time in human history which will never come again. I would go back to it in a heartbeat! Which 70s child wouldn't?
Thank you and god bless.
@@edmundsonuga-barke526 they’re not better than the Temptations they’re a way more versatile group and better dancers too you just sound bias
Four Tops my favorite group.. gives me chills..
iconic group......have all their albums still......those were the days
Levi was a power. Thank for giving us your voice.
Climb every mountain is my favorite song.
The greatest, they make it look so easy, incredible performance but they always gave such a professional show. Levi has such an amazing voice, the climb every mountain at the end is spectacular!, what a great post
Pure Genius, Absolute Brilliance. I Heart Levi Stubs and The Four Tops
Bam! Those voices. Great performance!
The vocals are so sharp. Such power and conviction in their performance.
Ive loved them since i was 16 im now 73 x
As a small child I was so mesmerized by the Motown artists. They were & so sophisticated
I like their version of Climb Every Mountain from the Sound of Music.
When Levi sang that, he literally gave me head-to-toe chills and tears in my eyes. Spectacular voice!!
I loved it too, he can make me smile, cry and laugh.
They were the best
Bernadette brought tears to my eyes. So many memories came flooding back of a innocent time, a simpler time in my life. I preferred Levi to David Ruffin...
REAL ARTISTS.. REAL MUSIC 🌍❤️🎶🎶
No one better than Levi Stubbs!
And he’s handsome, too
David Ruffin is ;) (for me at least)
Messein-Carrard Adrien he is my #2!

Gosh The Best Ever RIP Levi Stubbs Thank You🙏❤️
ABSOLUTELY AWESOME!! I adore them, and Levi had the best voice...King of Motown, indeed!
RIP..love you still. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Four Tops Forever!!
It's a real thrill to see these clips now, at 75. This was the music of my youth but my friends and I never saw them live, just heard those magnificent voices on the radio and our 45 rpm records. I only learned the name Levi Stubbs in the last few years. I read that he insisted he never be put above the others. My heart warms with the memories of this and other great songs of the era.
ED SULLIVAN WITH THE BEST GROUPS AND BANDS.
Great performance by the Tops. As of this clip, they would be together without a single personnel change for the next 30 years! That’s a story of love, brotherhood, and togetherness.
I never heard this song sung more powerful and magnificent........God bless the Four Tops......three of them passed. But Levi Stubbs, lead singer, is a Legend........his songs will live on and on. I especially love ❤️ Bernadette!! 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏💞❤️💞❤️
Motown was MAGICAL.
Got find me a Bernadette! "I need you to live!!!" He meant that.
One of the epitomes of Motown also a made to order distinctive powerhouse lead vocal
Saw them in concert many years ago. They did Jumping Jack Flash by the Stones as an encore. Levi Stubbs was jumping up and down, and the crowd went wild. It's something I'll never forget.
Ok, that puts you up on my HATE list but the person above your name saw the 4 Tops and the 4 Seasons... at the same concert. Him, I really hate, but you're running a close second lol :o)
I would've loved to see that
@@Tonithenightowl Saw the 4 Seasons, too, but not at the same show. 😆
@@cherylkern3288 Oh, that does it... you're now back on the top of the hate list. lol If you say you saw Gene Pitney in concert... Cheryl, you and I are going to go toe to toe beating each other with powder puffs... if you're old enough to remember powder puffs. lol :o)
The best ever !
Only Levi could have sung "Bernadette."
I was at my girlfriends house at the time when Bernadette came out. Where did the TIME GO!!!
Four Tops❤ 😇
Today television and the internet is so specificly made for individual audiences: this is for this audiences that is for that audiences. Television in the past was generalized A little for everyone in most shows Motown capitalized on this brilliantly
The genius of motown is not only did they have their acts do their own hits and current music to appeal to the young on television but they also had them do pop standards and Broadway show tunes to appeal to older audiences that were watching the same show
Ed was great!
The Four Tops had it all. One of the best concerts I ever attended was second row from the stage in ‘85 in NYC: Four Tops and Temptations (TNT) with almost all original members. Levi was incredible!
Thanks Ed
Magical.
Extreme talent...they can sing anything
I love the words to this song and the chorus in general.
I think the 4 tops were slept on a little bit they probably had more hits than I realize
If not for the Temps!😌😞
If not for Berry running HDH off
I once heard Levi Stubbs called “The Black Sinatra”.
Lawrence Payton can sing as well he sang lead on a couple of songs. My favorite song he sang lead on was feel free in 1977!

Excellent!!!
I think Chuck Jackson, another powerhouse who sang as strong as Levi and David Ruffin never made it as big due to those two taking no prisoners on vinyl.
Oh, that Boogaloo?? Fine ass moves!!
Wow! These guys are a class act. Wish I could have seen them live. OMG their harmonies are beautiful. Glad they were on The Ed Sullivan Show it's the first I've known about it 😊😊💕💕. I was about ten maybe eleven years old but I remember their music and songs and THEM!!
Pure class.. simple as that
Levi's climb every mountain made me feel so much I thought I'd cry.
One of My favorite songs is Bernadette.
These guys were awesome and the fact there love for each other was so genuine and stayed together 40yrs is just so beautiful. They were fake or pretending or pretentious.
I want to see more lives, I heard they also did the Johnny Carson show and he fought to get them.
I like the brief chat at the end Levi is funny just like I thought.
Great group of true brother's who was the opening act in the 50s Billy Eckstein they were season when they signed with Motown....
I love them!!!!
Perfection xx
Awesome 😀
Climb every mountain. High school graduation show. Houston Texas 60 s
I can't believe they didn't sing " Ask the Lonely" ...guess they wanted to keep the heartbreak songs out of the compilation or they may have done Seven Rooms of Gloom, too. I was there for this group and we LOVED them. They put on a show. :o)
Seven Rooms of Gloom haven't been released at that time. It was released a few months after this performance.
@@NathanAHogan I didn't know that and I wonder if Ask the Lonely fell into that category, too. :o)
@@Tonithenightowl Ask The Lonely was recorded in August 1964 and was released in early 1965.
Bernadette was released the day before they appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show on February 18, 1967.

Love this song
Man I miss these guys . There music was genius!
Levi Stubbs was a lead singers lead singer.
Levi Stubbs was the voice of Audrey 2 in "The Little Shop Of Horrors" (1986)

El carisma del vocalista es genial. Mezcla de gesticulaciones extrañas e inquietas y una profundo respeto y humildad para el público y el presentador.
Go Levi.

"Bernadette" was the name of "Joey Canzano's first love. Joey was also known as "Joey Vann" The lead singer of The "Original" Duprees.
The temptations still is the best group because their choreography and vocals of the originals of course, but the four tops made better decisions that didn't hurt the group.
