What do yall think about that video? Edit 3:15 I meant to say..if it was a female teacher as opposed to a man. I think the reaction would have been drastically different if we saw these same girls taking down a woman's hair. Regardless of gender..no kids should be doing this in my opinion.

Absolutely not! Unprofessional and no good parent is sending their child to school to comb their teachers' hair. Should he have been fired, no, but reprimanded Absolutely!

Bravo sis! I agree with you wholeheartedly. This was both inappropriate and unprofessional. As a teacher I understand him wanting to create a community in his classroom but there are better more appropriate ways. We have to set boundaries with our students…they are not our peers. He was wrong for making the post, even if parents consented, which I highly doubt. These are impressionable young girls and he was heading down a slippery slope. He made a bad choice.

I'm a man. And I always have issues with young girls my whole life. I never let them around me like that because I'm a man. And never want a young girl to think she is the woman for a grown man. This dude letting little girls in his head like that is flirting with disaster. Women can do way more with children because that's how civilization is. But men, we are under a whole other standard. We provide and protect. What the f*ck was he thinking. Luckily no body is going for blood. This is pedophile type stuff.

He stepped out of his role as teacher. He's only there to teach.

As a veteran teacher this was unprofessional at the least. While as a K-2 teacher I’ve put a in a barrette or retwisted a loosed twist, I would never re-do a child’s hair from scratch OR allow children to play in my hair. Clear cut social media etiquette for young teachers is might be beneficial. I think he should have been suspended for the incident and not fired.

I was hoping a teacher would comment. Thank you so much for your insights. 💜💜

Do you think that they fired him because he was adamant that he didn’t do anything wrong? If he was indignant about it, what recourse would they have? He still doesn’t believe or understand that he did anything wrong. He literally hasn’t learned anything.

for me gender has nothing to do with being unprofessional, i would be extra livid if it had been a female teacher, i feel like it's taking advantage of the students, most braiding shops charge money for taking hair out, teachers need to maintain professionalism, unless this student is a cosmetology student, it's a no for me, regardless of the teacher's gender

The issue is not them taking down his hair. The issue real is how we've allowed social media to define the culture. In social media there are no boundaries therefore there are no consequences. People will literally do and say anything for attention. Another issue is that the mass majority of social media 'influencers' are young and have little to no moral code or enough wisdom to live their own life. Sadly the young are leading the old. I'm not saying that younger people can't be leaders or wise but let me tell you, I DO NOT want my children trying to guide others because they don't know enough. My children are kind, knowledgeable, and educated but i also see their lack of wisdom, their lack of experience, and their need to take the same life lessons over more times than id like to admit.
I haven't seen this video but i am sad that they fired a seemingly respected teacher.
Teachers are out here quitting the educational industry all together and they let one go. i think that wasn't a good move. I think he could have made it an educational moment like let's use a microscope to look at your hands before and after taking down a few of my braids and how the chemical break down affects your skin. lets look at the shedded hairs under the microscope to see buildup or what split ends look like. Make it a lesson rather than a class period of free/easy labor.
Side note, him calling them bestie is on the leadership. he either didn't understand or care that they are not his peers. i think that was failure on the part of his leadership. The leadership has to tell their staff whats ok and what's not.
Lastly, the leadership should have taken this into account. I guess he didn't get permission from the principal but I'm sure if he wants, he can be employed at snother school. I just disagree with the outcome of them firing him.

All good points. I think his firing is due to him posting on social media. He went live on TickTock while at school.

But should he have been fired? I think he should have definitely been disciplined. I think because he is a black male teacher the consequences were harsher.

I’m honestly on the fence about him being fired. He started the video saying “let’s stir the pot”. 🤔Most school districts have strict policies about sharing on social media.

I always go back to The movie To Sir With Love. He conducted himself very professionally when the young Lady had a crush on him. Never crossed boundaries. They learned to respect him and also thought he was cool. This is how alot of kids still are today . They have a cool teacher he's a male so their also crushing on him. He didn't use wisdom at all. But at the same time I would have put him on probation and given him training on boundaries with students who are in his class.

I'm back from his video annnnnd he needs counseling... There needs to be an assembly for protocol between teachers and students.

Wow… I do find it interesting that he refers to them as his best friends. They are not his peers. I think his intentions are good, but the lines can get blurred if there’s no boundaries.

@@annettemint Yeah, after watching the video he actually needed to be fired. I remember how many creep teachers I had, and his opinion and behavior could cause either a girl to make a move or could make him more open to crossing the line....

I didn't think there was anything wrong with it, now if this was being done at his home, absolutely not. From what I heard the students and parents love him. I do not think he should've been fired. He should've been given a warning and I'm sure he would not do it again.

I think this was inappropriate and unprofessional. I’m not saying he’s a pervert but some predators use “innocent” touch as a gateway to grooming. Then it’s hug or a kiss. I had male teachers in 3rd and 5th grade. They didn’t touch me and neither did my female teachers. Where I live as an adult we had a female teacher arrested for having sex with a female student.

Thank you for posing these questions and sharing your thoughts. I have way too much to say 😂 It was highly unprofessional. Regardless of gender, no child should be providing personal care services to a teacher, which is what it was. Nor should he be doing personal care things in such a visible manner while at work. Have I taken my twists down at work once before, yep, in my office with the door closed while working. He was snacking on his tangerine like he was at the salon or spa or something 😩 I can’t think of what it’s called, but there’s something in the professional standards that state that a person in authority cannot/should not ask personal favors from those of which they have authority over. Also, as a former classroom teacher and former counselor for juvenile s*x offenders, I admit that I am hypersensitive and hyper-focused to adult-child interactions. Also, I took issue with him referring to them as “best friend.” I understand wanting to connect to them, but there are other ways to do that. If he violated policies, yes firing was warranted. I hope he learned a valuable lesson. Certified professionals need to not only CYA, but PYC (protect your credential/certification). I know this was a lengthy response.

The crazy thing is I've seen so many black women that are teachers that are doing the little girl's hair at school and they've never been fired never let alone have received backlash I mean there are so many teachers on social media taking care of little girls hair as teachers they were wrong for firing him maybe give him a warning or something but firing I feel like it's extremely unfair.

No😮 The teacher should be working, and that's all. Honestly, back in the 80's there were teachers that did do students hair, and some kids did the teacher's hair. It's not that serious 🤦🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️

I don’t think that teachers and student should be touching each other. A handshake, maybe, but don’t let it be a lingering one 😒. A kid gets hurt, there’s a nurse, and counselors are there for children whom are struggling emotionally/ physically. I was just telling my daughter that I can only Imagine seeing this during one of my school pop ups!! 😳😡

I...don't get what the big deal is? Yeah, the fact that this is a man definitely influenced the punishment. I can see how it would be seen as inappropriate, but I certainly don't think the first step should've been termination. I think it's sad that sexism cost this man his job.😕
