“That boundless child energy” is exactly what 13 was during her run which I think is brilliant for her to just cap off her era by making friends and showing she isn’t alone anymore.
One of the earlier seasons as we saw was that the Doctor always felt alone and was one of their biggest fears (The God Complex touches on this fear).
13 is older and wiser (aside from what you think about the scripts) so she’s had time to learn to let go and look forward toward a bright future than dwell in darkness.
“Tag, you’re it!” is definitely awesome and falls in line beautifully with who Jodie is in general and she’s a Doctor we’ve seen truly have a trait the others didn’t explore as often due to their trauma: hope.
We saw the Doctor looking hopeful in a regeneration for the first time.
Anyway, I’m looking forward to 14 and Ncuti’s 15th Doctor. It’s gonna be a year of speculation and fun.

I think the main reason why Tennant is the 14th, is because the 3 episodes upcoming will celebrate the shows 60th anniversary (this was part of the BBC's 100th birthday), and he is arguably the most beloved of the incarnations, possibly beating even Tom Baker's 4th. In any case, having Tennant as the Doctor going forward allows the 15th to have a line drawn from Chibnall's era and go on to RTD's second wave. Also felt a bit sad that Elisabeth Sladen wasn't around to return as Sarah Jane. It also seems Tom Baker's health prevented his participation. And I noticed several direct visual references to Star Trek films. Yaz and the Doctor were touching hands while separated by glass(STII). Then we saw erupting volcanoes being frozen just like the one in Into Darkness. But the real clincher was the imploding cyber moon being a recreation of Vulcan's destruction in ST 2009. And no way was that one a coincidence, it's literally the same shot complete with the Tardis racing away exactly as the Enterprise did

To be fair to the Chibnell & Whittaker era of the show, every era has had its faults, but also its gems.
Also, the COVID pandemic and lock-downs mucked up the plans for Series 13 and potentially last year’s specials, which impacted on the number of episodes (and therefore stories), as well as character returns (e.g., the Fugitive Doctor/Ruth).

I had tears in my eyes when I saw him, this special without talking about the end was such an incredible love letter for the old who, the idea of having a group talk of the old companions talking about their Doctor while Jodie was regenerating was beautiful. In terms of classic companions who could've come back, they basically got everyone it made sense to include, except for Polly because the actress was unable to make it.
    Full explanation:
Susan (1963-64) would be hard to explain. It's unclear what happened to her after The Five Doctors, and she is Gallifreyan so you have the whole issue of the Time War.
    Ian (1963-65) is there.
Barbara (1963-65) actress died in 1993.
Vicki (1965) stayed behind in ancient Troy.
Steven (1965-66) stayed behind to help on an alien planet.
Katarina (1965) and Sara Kingdom (1965-66) both died in the show.
Dodo (1966) actress died in 2021.
Ben (1966-67) actor died in 1998.
Polly (1966-67) was invited but the actress couldn't make it.
Jamie (1967-69) is from the 18th Century, and had his memory of the Doctor erased.
Victoria (1967-68) actress died in 2017.
Zoe (1968-69) is from the distant future of the early 21st Century, and had her memory erased.
Liz (1970) actress died in 2012.
    Jo Grant (1971-73) was there.
    Sarah-Jane Smith (1973-76) actress died in 2011.
Harry Sullivan (1974-75) actor died in 1986.
Leela (1977-78) stayed behind on Gallifrey with K9 Mk1, so that's problematic.
Romana (1978-81) is a Time Lord, last seen in the universe of E-Space with K9 Mk2. First actress died in 2012. Second is still alive, and of course she could regenerate. The Time War is problematic, especially since a lot of spin-off media has her return to Gallifrey as President.
Adric (1980-82) died in the show.
Nyssa (1981-83) stayed behind to help on Terminus.
    Tegan (1981-84) is there.
Turlough (1983-84) returned to his home planet, Trion.
Peri (1984-86) was stranded on Thoros Beta where she married King Yrcanos (Brian Blessed).
    Mel (1986-87) is there.
    Ace (1987-89) is there.

So considering this and so far I've heard that this next year is going to be mostly specials, I think we'll get a few hour long specials with David then by Christmas 2023, is supposed to be the next Doctor who is already confirmed, and he will be the 15th.

He did the original NuWho runs of Eccleston and Tennant (2005-2010 aka Series 1-4). "Whaaat ?"
That was an amazing fucking mess... holy shit Chris, you pulled it off.
This episode had *taking my breath* Yaz, Dan, Graham, The Master, Cybermen and Ashad, Daleks, UNIT and Kate, Ace, Teagan, Vinder, Jo Martin's Doctor, cameos from Classic Doctors, an elaborate world-ending plot AND it was a regeneration story.
    And it fucking worked.
I was so convinced it would be overly convulted and none of the characters would find the time to really breathe (as most of Chris Chibnall era has been) but no... the man outdid himself.
The plot made overall sense (emphasis on overall, it was clumsy on many regards but it's easy to overlook it) AND it was truly emotional. I squealed in glee when the old faces showed up and I did shed my tear when Ace and Teagan got to get their closure with their Doctors.
Every Whovian can understand it, the pain of those characters left behind who need closure, just a final moment, with their (first) Doctor.
It was beautifully delivered and that ending scene with all those left-behind (even though I wish we did get cameos from more recent characters as well) did truly work. There too my eyes were wet.
No really, Chris you did it. You closed your time on the show on a bloody high note. Maybe the best episode of your era.
It truly felt like Doctor Who in a way I havent really felt in a while.
Though that is not entirely fair to say, there are some absolute bangers throughout Thirteenth's era : Demons of the Punjab, It Takes You Away, Fugitive of the Judoon, Haunting of Villa Diodati and Village of the Angels most of all. But I'd also mention The Woman Who Fell to Earth, Witchfinders, Nikola Tesla's Night of Terror, Can You Hear Me? and Once, Upon Time as really strong entries as well.
We will miss you Jodie. Your Doctor has been an absolute joy to watch even though I wish you'd been serviced with overall better stories.
And now let's revisit some old faces.
Welcome back David. Welcome back Russel. Welcome back Catherine.

One thing fun to realize is that if you count Flux as a single serial like it was presented as, this special is the 300th televised Doctor Who story. It having a lot of classic references makes a lot of sense with that in mind.
Also, personally I feel like out of all the showrunners Chibnall was the showrunner that liked combining the classic and modern eras. Russell and Moffat had references here and there and some special episodes like Sarah Jane's return, but they as a whole focused more on keeping it current. Chibnall's era did a lot more direct references and uses of Classic Who themes and elements in the modern setting.

This is easily one of my favourite episodes of Doctor Who, ever. Such a brilliant send off for Jodie.

Really? The whole Chibnail era was awful nearly start to finish ( I don't call it the Jodie era because I can't blame her for the terrible terrible writing)

i think overall, the chibnall era of doctor who was lacking in stories focused on the more characters than the settings. like i wish jodie or any of her companions got more of a chance to be engaged with the storyline the way previous doctors and companions have been, but it didn't feel like they did enough.

22:13. That’s the actor who played Ian Chesterton, the only surviving one from the original cast. He’s 98 years old.

I really loved this send off - I loved how the doctor's look and personality traits altered to how the companions saw them - really added a nice throwback and personal touch! Also, goes without question but the regeneration was just fantastic! They did Jodie justice there! Can't wait to see the direction they'll take moving forward now RTD is showrunner now! :D

jodie really went out with her best story I thought.
I agree with her run being bogged down by confusing, messy plot threads- and I thought this special worked so well because chibnall didn't try to pull a time of the doctor and tie it all together for his conclusion. this felt like a classic modern who story, for lack of a better term.
I love how you guys live up to your channel title and aren't aware of the casting and production news. makes the surprise at the end all the better! and it was hilarious how you unintentionally foreshadowed it by talking about tennant and the dreaded 'sound' at the beginning 😅

I started watching from season 1 right around when "Tennant coming back" was becoming common knowledge and I was kinda upset it was spoiled but I thought that was spoilers for "day of the doctor" so I was even more shocked when he came back at the end of this

Yes! I’ve been looking forward to this reaction. Love all the throwbacks to classic who, especially who grew up in the wilderness years of who. I will miss Jodie but my hero Tennent is back!!

Apart from all this can i just say how incredible it was to see Sacha Dhawan in his role as the Doctor and it occured to me while watching this episode that i was seeing both doctor's companion Yaz (Mandip Gill) and her rival portrayed by South Asian actors and that too on the day where next British PM is going to be south asian and being Indian myself who has been living in Britian for years now, i couldn't help but feel emotional about being represented in such a classic british show
