    Don’t forget that Tennant is not the first one to do this - it was confirmed in the 50th that he regenerates back into the fourth doctor (also yes, the logo is very much an updated version of the fourth doctors logo also). Funnily enough, both the fourth and tenth doctors are generally considered the fan favourites, and as stated in the 50th, the doctor will ‘revisit the old favourites’ in regeneration.

  • @PerovNigma
    @PerovNigma 9 місяців тому +189

    *1)* On the subject of Fourteen's sonic screwdriver (6:49), there was a comic called _Liberation of the Daleks_ that showed Fourteen immediately after the last episode, wherein he lost Thirteen's screwdriver. He got this new one offscreen, so maybe a future comic will show that.
    *2)* Gonk, noun, a spherical or egg-shaped doll with frizzy hair.
    *3)* Between Thirteen's biscuit dispenser and Fourteen's coffee machine, I'm convinced the TARDIS heard Bill Potts say she looks like a fancy kitchen and decided "I _should_ offer food and drink from the console, that would be nice."
    *4)* Love that the TARDIS is fully accessible for wheelchair users, or K9, or Daleks. And the Doctor can go zooming around it like a cat/dog!
    *5)* I want to believe that the TARDIS can withstand coffee spillage, and that she was just taking the first chance she got to have Donna back onboard.
    *6)* Rose's hobby is toymaking. I can't help but wonder if that'll tie in to the later villain...
    *7)* Regarding 23:36, they are a returning villain, but not from the Classic Era stories. This episode was an adaptation of an old comic strip from decades ago - David Tennant was 8 or 9 when he read it. With this, _Human Nature/Family of Blood,_ and _Dalek_ adapting previous stories, I wonder if Russell Y Davies likes doing that, and if he'll do it again, maybe with a well-known EU story like _Prisoner of the Daleks_ or _Spare Parts._

      7. 1980's 'Doctor Who and the Star Beast' published in Marvel UK's Doctor Who Weekly (which is now Doctor Who monthly magazine), written by 2000ad comic veterans Pat Mills and drawn by Dave Gibbons (credited in the titles and briefly interviewed in the behind the scenes show which accompanied this on Saturday online in the UK), starring the Fourth Doctor. And like David Tennant I too read it, on or around the time. Both Beep the Meep, the Most All Mighty and the Waarth Warriors come from it, and are pretty much close to how they were drawn, though apart from the turn around of the Meep's identity the rest of the NEW Russell T Davies story expands widely from this. Oh, and if you look online or on UA-cam you will find PLENTY of images from the original 1980 strip.

    Shirley is played by Ruth Madeley who has a condition called, I think, Spina Bifida. I like the detail of Shirley crossing her legs while talking to The Doctor, it shows that not everybody who requires a wheelchair is fully paralysed.

    • @axlm.808
      @axlm.808 9 місяців тому +25

      Spina bifida is a condition where the spinal cord can be exposed (and damaged) because of the spine not fully formed. It means that, even you doesn't suffer any form of paralysis, your spine is very fragile and using a wheelchair might be highly recommended
      Frida Kahlo also had this condition

    • @hannahsarthub

      I have Spina Bifida, and it largely depends on the part of the spine that is affected. Mine was closer to the bottom than the top, so my legs work above the knee, but walking is extremely difficult (though still possible). Based on her physique and mannerisms, I would put her near the same level as me. But, Spina Bifida can go from full on quadriplegic to barely noticeable.

    We know the TARDIS is sentient. We know it moves through time in a nonlinear way so it knows things that haven't happened yet. It's familiar with Donna and knows her all took well. We've never seen the Tardis included a beverage maker into the main console before so in theory it did that knowing Donna would spill her drink and cause them to hurl through time and space on 1 last grand adventure together. It doesn't always take him where he wants to go but it always takes him where he NEEDS to be

    The Star Beast was originally a Doctor Who Magazine comic in about 1980-ish, written by the same writers as the comics 2000 AD, which is home to Judge Dredd.
    Maybe the slow reveal of the Wrarth Warriors was for long time fans who were familiar with them, because Russell has gone on record to say as show writer, he considers every comic and side story in the expanded universe canon because he doesn’t want kids to read them and love them and have them not be acknowledged in the show.

I also loved the trans representation in the first half of the episode because it felt real and natural. At the end, it just became a bit ridiculous. I loved a lot of this episode but I do have problems with the ending. The stuff with Rose early on in the episode was great. Showing the bullies deadnaming her, Donna and Sylvia's talk and Sylvia slipping up, Rose talking to the Meep about how she feels different. And I loved the fact that fact that Donna having a child allowed the metacrisis to be shared between 2 hearts. The binary/non-binary stuff was borderline for me but if that was it, I could've accepted it. But the ending with Donna and Rose just letting it go? That felt so lazy and cheap. This was a 15 year old problem that had no solution. The solution is just to let it go? And the unnecessary sexism as well. If you want to raise women up, you don't need to put men down. Also it doesn't work because the Doctor was just a woman a few hours ago so why didn't she tell Donna about how to fix this problem. They should've split the metacrisis between Donna and Rose but kept it in them for the following specials and maybe fixed it in the end. It was too much to fix everything in the first special

      Have to agree for the most part - even as a queer person who doesn't mind a bit of camp msiandry. It just made no sense, the binary stuff was interesting but could have been written better (this is rtd the literal father of queer tv in the UK, he even wrote the original queer as folk - he could defo do better) as felt clunky and outdated. The male presenting/let it go element was borderline painful to watch, if we're going to go for a genderless doctor, which can be cool if done well, why reinforce gender binary's two second later. I was just so confused how Russell T Davies who wrote Queer as Folk, Cucumber, Years and Years etc forgot how to write lgbtq+ people well.
      However (not your comment) there's so much anti-david tennant (for his vocal trans support) + anti 'wokery' online that outside of blind wave I'm going to have to defend an episode I didn't even think was that good aha

    I hate that male presenting timelord line, it feels tacked on luckily it didn't ruin the special for me, but you just had this really cool scene saying the doctor is male and female and neither and more and then you ruin it with a male ego joke. Cut that and change it to have rose saying how she was able to figure it out because of her experiences as a trans girl, that she has experience letting go of the things that are you but not "you". Before I get piled on, no I'm not transphobic (actress) or bigoted against nonbinary people (Rose). I'm glad to see Doctor Who (in particular, Russel T. Davies) is expanding its inclusivity.
    HOWEVER
    The resolution of the metacrisis was silly. Like, borderline stupid. Splitting it between Donna and her kid is awesome, love that. And I like that even though half-power metacrisis doesn't immediately kill either of them, it would eventually. That way they have to get rid of it so as to avoid future problems in storytelling when the companions just know everything.
    But that line about "something a male-presenting person could never understand" is ridiculous for several reasons:
    1. The Doctor was, LITERALLY, a woman about a day or two ago in the story. If there was some mystical magical ability that female-presenting beings had access to, surely the Doctor wouldn't forget it in one day.
    2. The metacrisis is a complex and dangerous interaction between time lord consciousness and a human brain. It has absolutely zero to do with male/female/nonbinary. Like, literally nothing at all. Davies just completely retconned and f***ed over the severity and the nature of the metacrisis.
    3. If they could just "let it go," why the hell did Donna not do that to begin with? Sure, maybe she wasn't in the proper mindset to do it given that she was excited about her newfound intelligence. And sure, maybe it's easier to choose to let it go if it is split between multiple people. But that brings me back to my 2nd point.
    4. I hate calling things preachy because inclusivity is incredibly important. But integrating Rose's nonbinary nature into the story like it was is shallow, not thought out, and *preachy*. It's the definition of lazy writing for the sake of inclusivity, which is a disservice to fans of the show and to people looking for inclusivity. I'm sure Rose's actress likes what they did and the episode is, don't get me wrong, pretty good and a lot of fun. But that ending was just flat. I very much hope that does not continue in the next two specials.
    To clarify, I don't have a problem with having a nonbinary character. I don't even have a problem if that character's nonbinary-ness somehow helps save the day. But only if it feels earned, sensible, and fits within either previously established lore or some new, *developed* lore in the episode. We got none of that here.
    Nevertheless, I'm very excited for the next couple of specials and to see how Rose will fare as the new companion.

They've done a really good job of realising Gibbons design for the Meep, the Wrarth Warriors, and even Meep's ship and escape pod. Rose's friend, Fudge, is also a character from the comics story. Just to cheer you up, Bernard Cribbins filmed some of the special before he died, so we will see Wilf one last time! 🥰
    My only complaints with this episode were minor: 1) "The" doesn't work as a pronoun, and 2) the whole "Donna could have just chosen to release the metacrisis the entire time, but the Doctor didn't know because men can't let things go" was both lazy writing and surprisingly sexist for an otherwise very inclusive episode.

      The pronoun isn’t “the”, it’s “the meep” and works in the same way “the doctor” does.
      She couldnt have let it go the whole time, it was too overwhelming before and required the splitting of the metacrisis for them to release it. This works in a similar way to timelords releasing regeneration energy it would seem.

    • @KBRoller
      @KBRoller 9 місяців тому +1

      @@WonderboyCoz31 That's still not how pronouns work. A pronouns is used *in place of* the noun/name. The Doctor isn't a pronoun, it's just his name. The Doctor has used he/him and she/her pronouns (and would likely be okay with they/them pronouns as well).
      But the Meep said "my pronouns are the definite article" -- which is the word "the". That would mean that, when talking about the Meep, you'd say things like, "The went to the's ship and the engaged the's dagger drive. Good thing Doctor-Donna stopped the!"
      I guess I can accept that they couldn't "let it go" until it was split between Donna and Rose, except that they explicitly said it's "something a male-presenting person could never understand" 🤷‍♂
