That’s good! The thing that makes it awkward or untenable is when two people aren’t on the same page as to what they want their relationship to look like. Telling your friend that you have a crush on them doesn’t need to be the end of the friendship at ALL - if they say yes to romantic relationship then your friendship obviously changes, but if they say they want to keep your relationship platonic, that’s also good; you get to start processing your feelings now that you have a definitive answer, and you both get to stay friends. This isn’t a guarantee, just a best-case scenario in which both parties handle things maturely

What if you met at school, were friends in school, they had a crush on you and confessed, and you had a crush on them but were too shy to say yes. They decided to date two other people, broke up, enter a new school and you're somehow still in the same school, and they still have a crush on you. All of a sudden they leave school and stopped talking to you for a couple of years. You meet up randomly at a random outside place and find out they moved close to you, but you aren't exactly close friends anymore after years of minimal contact but you still hold a crush for them.
This seems like a combination of the friends, school, third space and situation-ship scenarios all combined.

I went though this EXACT same situation your comment caught me off guard
at that point enough social role barriers have been broken that the expectation of friend, school peer and stranger/associate no longer holds as a singular identity, so always tell them because the resulting social consequences is minimal. This is like the thing if you and your boss like each other but remained professional however yall met up randomly outside of work and confessed, usually HR will be very sympathetic and put u in different departments instead, because the social barrier of boss and subordinate faded naturally, so it is not unethical.
The reason why they never got over them was coz they never got to tell them so they better tell them. It might work out and if it doesn't it's better to be rejected than regretting to have never confessed

They either gonna say yes or "no, let's stay frineds". Hot take: I think the friendzone might be the better outcome since there will be less risks of losing the relationship/friendship entirely (though it is still possible). There might be a chance of them saying no and just kinda abandoning the friendship as well, but in this scenario I think you should reevaluate your friendship with the individual. They just left you, you don't mean much to them. This is the hardest, saddest and most painful outcome of the three, but if the friendship was one sided from the start and not that strong, this outcome is inevitable.

you missed the most important part. They never stay friends. That phrase actually means a mutual agreement to never speak again, at least beyond a 1 word exchange. You both just want away from each other. You ALWAYS lose the friendship, relationship or not. That’s good! The thing that makes it awkward or untenable is when two people aren’t on the same page as to what they want their relationship to look like. Telling your friend that you have a crush on them doesn’t need to be the end of the friendship at ALL - if they say yes to romantic relationship then your friendship obviously changes, but if they say they want to keep your relationship platonic, that’s also good; you get to start processing your feelings now that you have a definitive answer, and you both get to stay friends. This isn’t a guarantee, just a best-case scenario in which both parties handle things maturely
