I always wrote ideas I had down in a small notepad. I would later read them and be unimpressed. Then when I did have good ideas I thought, why write it down, and was sorry later.

Never heard of a commonplace book til this video, discovered my years worth of "diaries" were actually commonplace books this whole time! I should make more effort to take it with me places, and I do tend to reflect a lot on my thoughts because I'm constantly having an existential crisis for the past 20 years so it doesn't really make me spiral, it's the only thing that helps, but as well as the look of these commonplace books with scraps, drawings, etc. saving my movie and concert stubs for years, things like that, will definitely be taking some tips from this video though! yours look awesome

I’ve been keeping one of these for years and I never knew what it was called, so this video is very interesting to watch. I used to have a lot of free time in school, so I’d spend the time writing or making notes to my friends or doodling in the notebook, and I really enjoyed it. For anyone on the fence about trying this, I definitely recommend it. It can be a little difficult to get into at first, but it’s incredibly fun and useful once you do.

just discovered what i've been calling a diary is actually a common place book. i use it to write about my day, but only ever if i feel the need to share it. i also write my videogame achievements, doodle silly characters, count how many hours i've studied, glue any piece of paper memorabilia i get like cinema tickets or cool ads. i don't make myself add anything to this "diary" if i don't naturally feel inclined to. it's my fourth notebook since i've started journaling and i never read back the descriptions about my day, i only ever look at the drawings and "utility" pages like the hours-studied or to-do lists. to me, once my thoughts are on the page they're no longer mine to keep, but the notebook's, so re-reading serves me no use. it's freeing. i do wonder if someone will ever read them in the future, and if so, who will it be.

i journal every day, but i keep it strictly at home and don't put any like of the commonplace details in it- i literally havent missed a day in moths, and i totally agree that i spiral sometimes. someimtes i write one page, sometimes 10 in a day, but a lot of it is just my thoughts. i wish i wanted to keep a commonplace book instead, but im too nervous to write in public

I bought an expensive leather journal and I fully anticipate it looking rough later on. Such a liberating feeling of buying something expensive and then reflecting on how much you have used it, not enslaved to the fear of ruining it. Wear and "abuse" is a sign its well loved. Embrace it!

Totally understandable that you covered what you didn't feel like sharing! Loved this video, watched it while making a weekly spread in my bujo, which, thanks to you, I turned into a commonplace book as well (from the back side). It's helped me so much with my inner perfectionist berating me for my bujo not being as organised as pretty as I would like it to be - because it's no longer only a bujo, but also an amalgamation of everything and anything I write down there that's more to do with journalling and scrapbooking even.

hi ! nice video. i didn't know this type of book had a name, but i used to keep many when i was a teen. i divided my books in two and i used one half as a diary and the other for ideas, drawings, lists, things to do etc, and i wrote every day, ended up filling like 5 of them. i wanna try it again with your words in mind.

i'm an artist so i have a looooot of sketchbooks here and there, all are been used at the same time so there's no order in them. i used them strictly for good drawings and then, one day, used to write down a grandma's recipe and i thought "this is what this sketchbook was made for". From that moment i stopped performing in my own PRACTICE sketchbooks, no one is going to look at them if i don't want them to, so fuck it

while i agree that it's a fantastic tool for self-discovery, mindfulness and memory, i don't agree that there's no pressure involved, depending on who you are. i am very passionate about making sure i remember meaningful things or things that moved me or drew me in, and very passionate about the details of life and things i observe - so a lot of things move me, and i know i'd feel consumed by my desire to write in it too many times a day, about everything, and guilt for the things i didn't get to write about.

ive been doing this my whole life and i had no idea it was an actual thing!!! i called it a "writers journal" because i would write down all my ideas for short stories, characters, poems etc. and of course i'd doodle all over it too. nowadays my commonplace book has a variety of journal entries, random math when i need to calculate whatever in my daily life, quotes that remind me why im alive, to do lists, sometimes i write a random scene of my ocs, and lots of doodles of course lol! my go to notebooks are College-ruled notebooks that you can buy for like a dollar. great vid!! i really relate to the idea of leaning in to your messiness as an aesthetic :)

biggest word of advice is to not overthink anything, and yeah, it’s SUPPOSED to be fun. i think consuming the little amount of media that i do helps a lot for me to not be so comparitive. I’ve been more creative than i’ve ever been. and the value of a break, not forcing yourself to draw or do anything. let it happen
