Can I Save My Corrupted PS3 Hard Drive? (How to Rescue Data WITHOUT Safe Mode)

  • After changing my PSN ID and playing PS3 games online, I discovered Black Ops 2 would freeze every time. This was the straw that broke my PS3's back. That was back in April. Since then, I've put off this data rescue but now is the time. Over the years, many have encountered data corruption. But few know you have more complex repairs beyond safe mode. Today we attempt this in an effort to save all my precious files and memories from my old PS3. Will I succeed?! (Maybe if you watched you would find out, sheesh. Quit lurking the description).

      Linda H that's what I was thinking, so could I say attach an eternal hard drive to my PS3 or PS4 via the USB and copy from the internal hdd to the external hdd?
      I'm not changing my Id but I would just like to have it backed up for any future loss or problems. 👍😉

      Dude nice, does that hard drive have PS Home installed? There's a discord dedicated to bring it back, but an offline version (it works on the PS3 emulator RPCS3). They're looking for hard drives with PS Home to get assets off the cache, here's the discord:

    If your system is jailbreak-able, it's very simple to recover data from a corrupt hard drive. You can dump the EID root key from the console and use that key to decrypt the contents of the hard drive in Windows with PS3 HDD reader programs

      To be fair, their system was never designed for name-changes in mind, so it's not really a surprise that old PS3 titles are causing issues. Not sure that there's anything Sony could have done differently to solve that other than having the forethought to give the system name-changing capabilities from the start. If you care about your PS3 stuff, steer clear, but if you mostly just use PS4 and don't care much about PS3 stuff, then It's probably worth the risk.

    Bro, I feel your pain. Hard drives typically only have a 10 year lifespan, now that we know this very important deadline, we can prevent data loss in the future. Prevention really is in most cases the only solution, however if you’re into data recovery like I am then you can go a little deeper... since most hard drive failures are a result of a bad sata bridge connection, you could find a duplicate hard drive and swap the pcb as long as it has the same model number, and as long as the discs/reader are functional then you may be able to recover your data.

    • @esurfrider7687
      @esurfrider7687 5 років тому +1

      Though sometimes it’s not as easy as just swapping the pcb, sometimes you may need to remove a chip from the original and solder it to the new board, so it not really for beginners but research it and you might get lucky

    I definitely lost some save data when my PS3 died. I did find some old PS3 saves on my backup HDD, that I restored to my replacement PS3, but there were some notable saves missing on games I know I had completed. So it was an out of date backup.
    It's always rough losing data though (whatever the circumstances), especially for games with a complete save, one used for a platinum trophy etc. But it's an important, if harsh lesson that teaches you the importance of regular backups. I regularly backup my PS4's saves & captures and I have a backup of my PS3 saves.
    The only system I really need to backup is the Vita. I currently have PS+ so the saves are backed up to that. But anyone with a Vita can tell you the importance of its backups (via 'Content Manager Assistant' PC software), as for some inexplicable reason Sony decided that when you delete a Vita game install, it also deletes the save files too...

    Step 1: make sure your signed out. Start the game and go to multiplayer.

    Step 3: walk around, kill some bots for a bit then end game.

    I've had this happen to both my ps3 (BLOPS did it) and ps4, so i shed a tear watching this. However, the ps4 has a backup & restore function, which i had the foresight to do in 2017. So when my ps4 had this issue, i was able to restore my hdd without losing P.T. demo and (some) of my share/capture gallery etc. I highly recommend ps4 users backup their hdd as a precaution.
    Tip: Remove as many apps (games etc) as possible before backing as these can be easily redownloaded and will save you many hours (obviously don't delete things that can't be downloaded again, e.g. P.T. demo)

  • @Bandicoot803
    @Bandicoot803 3 роки тому +1

    SONY PlayStation 3 is not designed to work with Hybrid Hard drives, in fact, they require either the traditional ones or a SSD. But combo is a no-go!
    Secondly, that particular hard drive WD500BEVT certainly has IntelliPark enabled and set to either four or eight seconds by factory default. This is commonly known why they go bad very quickly.
    For those who don't know what IntelliPark is: It's a feature WesternDigital has introduced in the other half of the mid 2000's which automatically parks the read-write head armature after a setpoint of time. Their reason are complete junk: They want to lower the hard drive's power consumption at idle by banking the arm away from the platter area so that the motor no longer fights the air resistance squeezed between the disc spindle and the arms. But as new data requests pour into the mainboard controller, the arms are being sent out onto the disc area again. This constant in-and-out of the parking position causes terrible wear'n'tear on the read-write arms and head assembly, eventually causing the head to strike the spinning disc and carving grooves into it. Then the drive is ROYALLY ruined!
    To circumvent this, WD has released a DOS tool called "wdidle3.exe". This directly communicates with the controller allowing the user to en-/disable IntelliPark. Ironically, all WD RED drives have IntelliPark but it's disabled - with good reason!
    I hope that information is useful to all out here at any future point.

    If the PS3 automatically shuts down without beeping: corrupted MBR sector (the main sector which tells what operating system the hard drive has). You can try to repair using minitool partition wizard on Windows (right click, Rebuild MBR), but the recommended method is to use a linux distro and run gparted and click on the option to make a msdos table of partitions, but it will erase the drive completely. The minitool partition wizard tries to rebuild MBR without erasing the contents, but I cant guarantee success on the console.

    • @lordeilluminati
      @lordeilluminati 5 років тому

      The worse thing is that the PS3 is dumb and even if you try to reinstall the operating system, with a corrupted MBR it will fail and shut down again. You need to use a computer to completely rebuild MBR.

    Very interesting and informative. I recently bought a PS4 Pro. I already had a Vita. I decided I wanted to change my ID, but I got the warning about losing data and corrupting files, so I obviously didn't proceed. It begs the question though, that if it'll screw up the system, why give the option to change your PSN ID. I'd be interested to know under what circumstances does changing your PSN ID not screw up your system(s). I would, if possible, still like to change my ID! Thank you.

      @@SuperSealMan777Very late, and it's definitely an expensive solution, but you can buy another HDD to put into the PS3, and (because the guy mentioned dumping EID Root Key, I'm assuming you can find): the CFW you used on a usb drive, and format the hdd from there and getting the ps3 running, so you can run RebugToolbox (Evilnat comes with this in the Custom Firmware Settings) and dump the EID Root Key.
      Side note, if you didn't JB your system, you can simply install ofw as long as it's BEFORE 4.91, or whatever the most recent update is that doesn't have a CFW out and working (Eg; Evilnat is in 4.91 BETA, not fully working) and see if you can jailbreak your console from there, MrMario2011 has a video which is all you will need. Due note that if your console was updated to the most recent ofw update and there isn't a cfw which is complete out, installing an older firmware will not work. Simply wait for Evilnat (or your preferred cfw) to come out with a complete custom firmware.
      I've just been doing a lot of research because I reaallly want to get all my data off my old HDD because I had a lot of games which are super rare and I unfortunately don't have the discs for, so I wanted to put what I've learned out there.

    the problem is the filesystem Sony uses, it not fault-tolerant, had they used something similar to ext3, NTFS this kinda stuff really wouldn't happen. Over 6 years my PS4 has corrupted it's file system numerous times,, sadly doing this HD trick won't fix it, the problem isn't the drive, it's the filesystem, and cloning that won't fix it, based on what I saw the partitions are fine which would have been another repair vector if that was an issue.

Got a slim and have spent years rebuilding the collection I lost on the hdd. Now I play most of my games off of an external HDD. The PS3 is a great machine but you have to get to the slims and retire the phats or they will die on you. The thermal paste issue is nonsense too. I know this is old. Take your PS3 hard drive and using a hard drive reader, try and open some folders with a computer. If the hard drive reads you can save it. But you will lose all the data. Do a full format on the hard drive. Then restore the Fat format.
    It's now a clean hard drive ready to go. Put it back into your PS3 and update the files with a thumb drive.
    If you can not get it to list or read any of the files? That hard drive might be burned.

    @Mystic you can fix this by modding your PS3Slim (assuming its the CECH2xxx or CECH25xx)
    1. Install custom firmware such as REBUG
    2. Go to the REBUG tool and dump your eid_root_key to USB and copy back to your computer (this will allow you to decrypt your PS3 HDD)
    3. Mount your hard drive to your computer (if you only have a mac, install parallels and install windows)
    4. Run the PS3 HDD GUI v1.3 tool which can be found in the collective PS3Tools by aldostools (ps3.brewology.com/downloads/download.php?id=13974&mcid=4)
    5. Select your PS3 HDD then select the eid_root_key to decrypt your HDD.
    6. You should be able to copy off the files that you want from it
    I did this exact same thing when I wanted to clone my 500GB drive to a bigger drive and figured I could clone it like windows. WRONG! anyone reading this, you can't clone PS3 HDD's.
    Your option is to use the backup utility to another drive. Put in a new drive then restore from backup. (clearly, I didn't do that)
    THEN after it didn't work I made the mistake of putting the original drive back in the PC and initializing it to a GPT partition! Now did I not only fail at cloning my disk I lost everything.
    Through some tools and the trick above I was able to restore my original drive back to working order. Do the backup/restore to a bigger drive and all was good in the world again.
    Thank the homebrew community for being active.
    P.S. If you need help with this, let me know I'll be happy to assist.

    Both AOMEI and MiniTools partition wizard says that the hard drive is unallocated, but the console says it's corrupted. Neither can clone the drive because they can't recognize that any partition is present to begin with. I was really hoping this would work, but I guess the only remaining option is to dump the eid_root_key and then try a PS3 hard drive decryption tool, but I was REALLY hoping to back this up before resorting to that.
    EDIT: I didn't initialize the drive in Windows so that wasn't the problem. It seems that these tools just can't recognize the internal PS3 hard drive at all. I ended up using a program called "HDD Raw Copy" to make a 1:1 copy of the hard drive, but I hear that Clonezilla for Linux also works. Basically, the program doesn't need to be able to recognize the partition if it just copies the drive as it is. Sure takes forever though.
