- Learning The Fretboard On Guitar and the hidden geometry of the fretboard.
Today, I wanted to show you the underlying elegant yet logical framework of the guitar fretboard and the hidden geometry in the spacing of the dot or inlay markers, which enable you to vizualise the guitar fretboard and navigate the fretboard comfortably.
In this video, I discuss why the guitar fretboard dots are where they are, and how understanding this enables you to recycle chords, licks, and arpeggios in other areas of the guitar neck. This fundamental understanding is the key to playing everywhere on the guitar fretboard visualization.

Ricky, as a beginner, I have watched untold videos for the fretboard and remained confused aa ever. I have now watched three of your videos and finally a light bulb has gone off. I hate to admitted it but I was still counting 13, 14, 15 frets beyond the 12th. Your simple comment that 13 is really 1 all over again is so simple I am a fan for life.

You are the first person I've seen to give an explanation other than random placement of the dots. Thank you! I never realized where to find middle c on guitar also.
It occurs to me the dots are set up to let you easily find notes and chords across the neck in thirds, fifths, 7ths 9ths 12ths .... a quick reference to find the closest chord in your key to run out the chords all the way easily... dude... I can't even sleep at night I am so excited!

I have your book and really appreciate the clever ways you have found to help us learn to navigate the fretboard. A slight correction to your video may be in order, however: I believe the A string is actually tuned to 110Hz. I just found out that guitar notation is written in treble clef but in a different octave than the instrument is played in! Keep up the great videos!

Excellent video. There's a serious lack of technical understanding of the guitar's mechanics. I first stumbled on breakthrough information like what you've mentioned in a book from the 70's called Be Dangerous On Rock Guitar, I got in touch with the writer and he sent me some PDF material that came with the original book package, being as it's out of print. I also got in touch with the guitarist from Television, Richard Lloyd, because he did a video series for Guitar World where he hinted about the guitar's function around fourths; sadly, the interview never happened with him due to difficulties at his end, to put it politely...but I'd love to have had some deeper insight on what he was driving at because his video didn't go into much more depth at all.

Hey Rickey , My mind needed to know the theory of the fretboard and that thing with pytharagrym was amazing , not that math is my strong point but I've heard music is math ..and the more I learn about the guitar it seems to be so .

Hi Rick thanks for the useful theory. 2 things: What is the significance of the placement of the fret markers at 3, 5, 7, 9? You were headed there for an explanation but got side tracked. Second thing is that the open A string is at 110Hz and 440Hz is on the 5th fret of the thin E string (as well as in other locations on the fretboard). The hertz doubles with each octave.

I think, I have learned more from yours than from any other tutorial. Thanks for that! What I do NOT understand: Why should someone put markers on the fretboard mirroring inwards? Just to sort out the "devils note"? What is the musical approach on this?

what fret ranges are covered by the 4 different voicings? I captured 1-3 as Bass; 14 and on for Soprano. What are the remaining voice fret ranges?
Instructions unclear, got a Fretless bass with no inlays

Amazing content. But really wish you had not shot this video with a turnip.
In a sense...In every guitar there is really two guitars.
You start off with Pythagoreus' Theorom and why the dots are where they are and how they're relative to the non-dotted frets in position.
You then go into the 12 note scale repeating itself an octave higher above the 12th fret but never end up explaining why the other dotted frets are where they are, leaving Pythagorus out in the cold.
Is it all Greek to you?
Hiya Brice. I didn't dive into the Pythagoras massively as it's super nerdy and most folks won't be that interested. To be fair it's probably worth a separate video for the nerds as I'm fascinated with meantone tuning, the Pythagorean comma and we perceive music based on equal temperament. We owe a lot to the triangle dude's work on the monochord and his visit to study with the ancient Chaldeans.
