- Students at the US Army Sniper Course at Fort Benning learn essential skills in marksmanship and fieldcraft, including how to make a ghillie suit. Ghillie suits are a type of camouflage clothing that snipers wear to blend in with their environment. During week two of the Sniper Course, students participate in an event known as a ghillie wash, which is designed to test the suits’ durability as well as to weather and add natural color to the suits. Students’ ghillie suits are put to the test during stalk events, where they cover themselves in natural vegetation and must stealthily move through wooded terrain without being spotted by instructors. Insider spent two days at the US Army Sniper Course to see how students craft their ghillie suits and how they’re utilized during training.

That is awesome
That's really cool. Were you expected to keep quiet after being stepped on?
Cool story bro, needs more dragons
I used to airsoft as a teen and I used a sniper and made my own ghillie suit. I bought jute and an old uniform from a military supply. I used dark green and brown dyed burlap for the mesh, and tied in a lot of natural foliage from the environment. Crafting that ghillie suit and using it to blend in might well be the most fun thing I’ve ever done. The feeling of someone walking right by you and being able to blend in, all from your own work in making the suit, it’s a truly great feeling.
This makes me want to take one of my brothers old uniforms and do the same
Hello my friend how are you doing?

@@johncuervo3019 LMFAO exactly.
@@johncuervo3019 You would probably be right if that drone was actively searching for someone. Otherwise they would be flying too high to notice such a small heat image. But if you're in a position where that is a concern then a thick wool blanket can reduce your heat image, I'm sure the military has equipment like that or better to protect themselves from being detected.
Wow I didn't realize every ghillie suit is a home made version that they themselves made. Very cool!
Yup! Main reason is because the environment they might be located can vary widely. On mission you are in a snowy forest, the next you could be in a dense jungle.
Usually we have a "base" and add color, texture and shapes based on the terrain. Every sniper has little tricks for the suite they build. I learned how to sew, stitch and apply makeup because of sniper school :)
As i heard the ghillie itself is just made to break the human shape and most of the actual camouflage is vegetation picked on the spot and attached to the ghilie suit,if done correctly you are pretty much invisible

I graduated in 94.... Do you remember the SF Tabbed instructors name? He served in Vietnam and drove a Harley. He would sometimes superman flop on the floor to wake the class up. I grew up a little over a mile from the Sand Hill entrance to Ft Benning. This was before the entrances on St Mary's Road and Buena Vista Road were gated. We spent many summer days playing out there in the woods, picking up stuff the Box Heads left behind, like ammo clips, spent shells and C-rations (last half of the 1960s). There was almost never, ever anyone in that area on the weekends. Times have changed. The entire western border of Ft Benning is now fenced in. And the gates locked permanently. And yes, that red clay is everywhere.

I didn’t see you at camouflage training this morning Specialist! ~ Gunny
Thank you, sir! ~ Jar Head
That has way less to do with improving the ghillie suits, but the people wearing them. Notice that none of them actually had a full ghillie suit on during the wash. They could just as easily dip and rub the suits. This is about training them to move better, in ways that aren't easy to spot as human...and how to better camouflage themselves in the process.
If you think doing a roll on a road or crawling backwards with your underside up uncamouflaged with a few thrown in star jumps and squats is not going to get you seen I think you watched a different clip to me lol. It is to do with the way your body moves stretching the material. you know sometimes you bend over and your clothes are too tight they might rip? or the parts you attached were not done good enough thy will come lose. I'm sure they even said this you can't just make something up in your head and ignore what they said lol.
@@MagicMarvin33 Say that to my face! I'm right behind you. 😉🙃 I'm of the opinion that not everything that is claimed is truth. I didn't say it was only about one thing, but more about it. Didn't you notice that most of the features of their ghillie suits were not in place after the first assembly? Those pieces should have been fixed between activities, if the goal was to wear in the whole suit. Sure, those guys were green and moving too quickly, but certain muscles have to be trained to properly move. You can't just send someone out with a perfect ghillie suit and expect them to be able to not look like a suspiciously shaking bush or slithering pile of leaves. Yes, it could be purely made up, but reading between the lines and observing that one's stated goals don't match one's actions requires something more than merely trusting narrator's statements.
@@reginaldwelkin I'd say it to your. But no they are in the middle of building them that is done right at the start of the course then normally they do another one if they have time. Also cam is mostly natural they are only testing what they added not real bits of nature. So that is why they look naked to you.
If they did this after they built it for weeks and weeks and they didn't know how strong they'd have to be it would fall apart. This is a good test and the stalks are what the movement is all about.

Commercially made suits are garbage. People call them wookie suits (for obvious reasons when you see them)
There was a guy on a different social media site that was pretending to be something he wasnt, and he had what snipers call the sasquatch suit.. I told him that and he got all huffy and puffy.. I will say straight out that im not a trained sniper. But I got to work with many quite often and they taught me a lot.. Enough that I can spot a fake from a mile away. I do precision shooting now just as a hobby. But I also have been in places that was closer than I liked to be with people shooting back.. I decided back then that I would learn how to shoot long distance. Its not as easy as so many keyboard commandos think it is.. But with the help of the friends I made over the years and Kestrel, I do pretty good. Advice to anyone making a suit. Dont throw away those old foam army sleeping pads... They work great when sewn into the knees and elbows for cushioning the low crawl..
"What's that in the bush, did you see a head poke out?"

One work - Miserable
I worked at the Sunday markets for 12 years and we had to work in the rain sometimes. Pack up in the rain with wet boxes. So I know how miserable it can be in the water.
BUT this is next LEVEL
Serious questions: Does the moment a person use a heat sensitive camera make the whole camoflague process somewhat redundant though? What can snipers do about heat detecting technologies? Are there any ghillie suit designs which can stop heat from being detected?
Certain types of mesh can mask your heat signature pretty well, that's why you in some pictures will see a soldier cover their head with mesh fabric
anything that insulated holds it in. also they can cover themselves in dirt or whatever thatd be ambient temp.
I believe there are some things out there nowadays that can help keep thermals from detecting body heat, but I don't know if they use them in ghillie suits yet... Right now I think most of what they focus on is covered in the previous comments here...
it is hard to detect a sniper 200m+ away from a thermal camera.
Bear in mind heat sensitive cameras are costly and cannot make it as bare minimum to equip areas like jungles nor each personnel.

Personal gripe: journalists covering training always say "An event designed to [do this one thing]".
Nothing in military training is designed to do just one thing, ever! For example the evolution in question, the "Ghillie Wash"
1) continues the incredibly physical training that is a major part of the sniper course: they don't get a day off to build their ghillie suit
2) quickly shows what modifications need to be made for mobility and comfort
3) destroys the surface of the ghillie suit making it exponentially less visible under IR illumination
And finally
4) yes, it does of course test the durability and craftsmanship of the ghillie suit.
