  • Following an agreement with the copyright holder reproduced here is short film footage of a number of English and Scottish Football grounds taken during the 1979/1981 seasons. The original Cine film was shot in Super 8 format in colour and last approximately 90 seconds the quality is variable. (This version 640x480).
The footage captures the scene in and around grounds revealing the stands and terraces and they are a unique snapshot of crucially how the grounds appeared at the time before some of which disappeared forever or had yet to be redeveloped. Clubs not featured were either never filmed or they refused permsission to film at their ground.
They can be viewed following the links below and the screen size of the clip can be changed using the controls on the bottom right hand side of the google viewer. In providing these clips all I ask is that you respect the copyright holder and do not edit or redistribute any of the footage but links back to this post are fine.
Thanks to the Internet Football Ground Guide for their support.

I shed a tear for the Burnden Paddock and The Lever End every time my wife drags me to that god-awful Asda....

Writing this comment as we look about to be liquidated.
    Sad days indeed.
Saw first game in 1982 when I was 5, all through the awful 80s, then the rebirth of the early to mid 90s.
Never quite the same once we left despite the relative success of the premier league years.
Asda and DW gym ...how did it ever come to this?

My home from 1978 til last match.makes me cry still.what an atmosphere with only 5000on,goose bumps on neck when it was full.been in every part of burnden, and would gladly swap it for uni stadium, every time.
Just one more big night at burnden.

Why did they have to put seating in the Lever End? Ruined it!
Also, had they reduced the size of the Railway Embankment by this time? I went to games at Burnden Park in 1969 (v Fulham) and 1971 (v Oldham), and I recall it as being a lot bigger.

They just bolted seats to the terracing in Lever End so the camber was never right, you watched games from too low with your knees under your chin. Depending where the play was you either saw a lot of heads or a load of legs. Further back wasnt too bad, best ever view was when they put big screens in for FA cup games in early 90s.
Not sure about enbankment , its possible a row or two was taken from the top but again suspect its the angle of the camera again. In any case its better than the Co op which ended up there.
