Tonight I bring you another forgotten Football Ground video, this time it is Burnden Park, The former home ground of Bolton Wanderers from 1895-1997. Bolton are a founding member of The Football League and have won the FA Cup four times.

Many happy memories as a kid going to Burnden Park & the men on the turnstiles letting us in for free to watch the last 15/20 mins.
Remember visiting this ground back in 1993, took three trains to get from Derby as they kept breaking down. A traditional ground very similar to the old Baseball ground but with a larger capacity. Both founder members of the English game. Bolton had a decent side then with McGinlay, David Lee, Alan Stubbs and Jason Mcateer. Not been to the Reebok but maybe now that we are in the same division again will have to consider a visit. Ian Evatt an ex Derby player, good to see him doing well for the trotters.

As a travelling Watford supporter I've been to almost 70 away grounds including a fair few that no longer exist*,but Burnden Park was one I missed out on. It's said that the atmosphere could be intimidating,not for the faint of heart,as one of those real traditional old grounds,more so before Normid bit a chunk off at the start of the 1986-87 season. What must the crowd have thought when greeted that August afternoon with the brick back wall of that supermarket where half the big old end terrace had stood,as Wanderers prepared to run out to host Swindon,to who they lost 1-2**,in a Third Division match on the opening day of that season?
Relegations in 1980,1983 and 1987 took Bolton from the old First (top) Division to the Fourth (bottom),but they did get straight back up in 3rd place behind Wolves and cardiff with a win on the last day of the 1987-88 season,1-0 away to Wrexham**,and went up again in 1993 and 1995 to reach the Land of Milk and Honey that was the then-recently-inaugurated Premier League. I went to the Reebok,as it was called then once,in 2006,and was impressed by its size and design,and with that retail park next door there was no shortage of car parking,but it must rank as the most out-of-town club ground in the entirety of the English and Welsh professional leagues!
*In no particular order Highbury,the Goldstone Ground,Ninian Park,Highfield Road,Boothferry Park,Filbert Street,Maine Road,Ayresome Park,the old Den,the Manor Ground,Millmoor,Roker Park,White Hart Lane the old,Fellows Park,Upton Park and Plough Lane,plus Twerton Park in Bath when Bristol Rovers were playing there.

@Ralph Jackson only been to about 60 other grounds, used to buy a programme as a record of the visit. Mainly in the early '90's when it was far cheaper because of standing areas. Remember going to Vicarage Road about '94 and you had Paul Furlong and Bruce Dyer up front. Think we won 4-3 but a great game, straight down the M1 from Derby so an easy trip. Two grounds that always come to mind were Maine Road in 1991 as we were relegated after Niall Quinn had to go in goal as the subs had all been used and he saved a penalty and Highbury in 1992 as there was a mural at one end due to redevelopment work. Also remember sitting in the away stand at Hillsborough in 1990 just above the Leppings Lane terrace which was cordoned for obvious reasons. Going to games mid week to Brighton, Carlisle and Exeter etc always remind me of getting home at 2.30 in the morning and having to go to work the next day. Certainly could not manage it these days!
@@topcat4759 The ups and downs of being a travelling supporter! I bought a programme for every match I could as well - I've still got several crates full of them going all the way back to the early 80s. I was at that game when you won 4-3 at Vicarage Road,though our second home defeat in as many Saturdays it was a cracking game and we did have those two up front but they were both sold not long after that - Dyer's sale sparked a fans' protest against the board* at the ground! I never got to go to the Baseball Ground,but I've read a description of its atmosphere in the ground as intense,while outside the tightly packed terraced streets and works around it were said to shut out some of the daylight in olden days (a street called Vulcan Street was mentioned as being the classic example of this) before a lot of them were cleared,opening up space as evident on the later of these photos. I've been to Pride Park once,at the start of January 2000. Upon heading to the ground following pre-match visits to a pub or two,I remember approaching it via a route through a field that we entered at its highest end beside a main road,and being among a large number of supporters shepherded in the darkness along a footpath that meandered in several directions and at one point ran alongside a waterway; despite being packed together closely near the water's edge and with a few perhaps mildly inebriated,no-one fell in to my knowledge! I admit I got the impression that because the move was still so recent the club had yet to truly stamp their identity on the place,or perhaps to decide what to do with some of their roomier off-pitch new environs. The white-with-black (understandably) prevailing colour scheme of the stadium's fittings,particularly the wraparound sweep of roofing I think it had,when set against a dark winter late afternoon/evening,unfortunately had the effect of lending the place an antiseptic feel; it needed living in for bit longer to attain some warmth. Both sides were in a Premier League relegation battle,and if I remember rightly you had just signed a chap called Strupar and he scored as you beat us 2-0 and eventually stayed up.
I went on the supporters' coaches to a pair of cup ties at Maine Road,ten years apart,and those were both night games which meant getting back home at some silly time in the earliest hours of the morning,as with midweek visits to Elland Road,Boundary Park and Ewood Park.
*Elton had drawn back from being involved in the first half of the 90s,but I imagine he was less than pleased with the direction things were taking,from a transatlatic distance.

Nice to see an aerial old photo showing the lodge/pond behind the stand. I remember when workmen were filling in this pond ( circa 1970 ) where they used a large net to catch all of the fish. When caught they were placed in oil drums containing water , no doubt the drums were then transported to a lodge somewhere else to be released. I remember much to everyones amusement , that one of the fish in a drum wasnt very happy about all this, and would try to bite the fingers of anyone playfully putting their hand in the water. HAPPY CHILDHOOD MEMORIES ! The football wasnt too bad either.

Thanks for your video about Burnley Park. You were right it was a sad day when it closed. I have many happy memories of matches there. I took my eldest son to his first match there , he was only 4 and towards the end of the match he sat down on the terrace. A man walked by and said to him " if you don't behave next week he'll bring you again!"

A lot of memories for me there at Burnden. The last season was amazing, particularly John McGinlay’s Roy of the Rovers performance against Reading when he scored then went in goal to replace the sent off Keith Branagan.

Funny seeing that supermarket. Reminds me of the sad sight of Boothferry Parks final decades with a supermarket for a north stand, also due to the financial pressure the Tigers were under.

Brilliant football ground! Went 4 times with Charlton including the last game played there. We only had 200 tickets and were in a tiny scaffold stand. Great occasion though as Bolton Wanderers got promoted and their fans were as good as gold on the night. We had a fair few beers with some of them in a pub just across the road from the ground.
I went 4 times and was in a different part of the ground each time. In 82 it was snowing and we were put in the main stand upper section closest to the open end. I think it was the west stand. The next time we were in the open end. In the 90's we were on the side which had the terrace at the bottom and seats at the back. Then we were in the scaffold stand for the last ever game at Burnden Park.
I can always remember the Bolton Evening News signs all around the place.

Burnden Park was always my proper home and when we left I was an inconsolable young man until me Dad explained that we are called The Wanderers ...(not bolton Wanderers) because we could never find a home to call our own . Wherever the club Wanders the fans will follow. Whilst it may not look it , the railway embankment (where the superstore was built) held 40,000 people I think only Charlton had a bigger one at the time.. Anyway keep up the good work , really enjoyed it !

Went to the ex-site of Burnden Park a few years ago (It's now a supermarket car park) and stood on the spot where Frank Worthington scored his wondergoal versus Ipswich in 1979.
Port Vale fan, visited once in an FA cup tie in 88, wasn't even a teenager at the time, a memory that has always stuck with me to this day is getting is how frightening it was to be squashed up against a crush barrier when we scored and the subsequent crowd surge. My dad and fellow Vaillant's picked me up and lifted me over the barrier. Bizarre looking back that those kind of things were a regular Saturday occurrence, but that was then I suppose, until the terrible events the next year at Hillsborough.
Great video, looking back at a time now gone by, not just of an old traditional football ground but of an old England aswell. As for the Normid in the corner I remember Bolton winning national acclaim from one of the national papers as the football leagues No.1 fanzine, named the Normid Nomads, wonder what happened to that and its writers.
Anyways I'll visiting Bolton again this season for the league match in the 3rd tier, just as both clubs were back in 88.

Vale Park was a wonderful stadium, before your time. I remember visiting in the 1970s when Luton played an FA Cup tie there. A late goal by Jimmy Ryan secured a 1-1 draw for Luton but I was gobsmacked by the huge terracing - similar to Charlton's Valley at that time. Awesome!
Loved jumping off the bus during the 70s climbing the steps onto the lever stand great memories as a kid, lost something special once the seats went into the stand with promotion to the 1st division (prime now) Newcastle fa cup.Everton league cup semi, over 40000 v Sunderland 75 for a league game great memories 👍

Brilliant video, thanks for featuring my home ground. Cant believe the record crowd was nearly 70,000. I remember being at the ground for a 3rd round FA cup game against Leeds ( i think). It was a night game, i couldnt get into my normal part of the ground, (burnden paddock), so had to go into the Lever end. The gate was 44,000 and i remember thinking it was rammed then! I must have been around 13/14yrs of age. I watched Frank Worthington score his famous over the top goal against Ipswich from the Paddock. EPIC.. The place erupted!! Thanks again for the pictures...

I agree. There was something fascinating about dilapidated stadiums - my team, Luton, are still playing in one ) Today's sanitised, safety obsessed stadia are very dull!

Fond memories of burden park used to go in 60s to 80s still brings a lump in the throat when I see the old ground before they put the supermarket on the embankment

Very happy memories of burnden park my late father took me to my first match in 1973 we sat in the Manchester road stand I think it was v Grimsby big crowd promotion push
I think both clubs have fallen on hard times in recent years.

I went to Burnden Park once, to watch Spurs lose 1-0. I do remember we had a good Neil McNab goal ruled out for offside. It was a full house and a great atmosphere. Bolton went up as champions.

Could i recommened Ninian Park former home of Cardiff City played there for 99 years. It used as the home stadium for the Wales national football team from 1911 until the late 1980s, hosting 84 international fixtures with over over 60,000 spectators in attendance. A bit of history about the ground. Cardiff City had originally been playing home fixtures at Sophia Gardens but the lack of facilities at the ground had prevented them from joining the Southern Football League. To combat this, club founder Bartley Wilson secured a plot of land from Cardiff Corporation that had previously been used as a rubbish tip and construction of a new ground began in 1909. The stadium was completed a year later and named Ninian Park after Lieutenant-Colonel Lord Ninian Crichton-Stuart, who had acted as a financial guarantor for the build. A friendly match against Football League First Division champions Aston Villa was organised to open the ground. It was originally constructed with a single wooden stand and three large banks made of ash, but gradual improvements saw stands constructed on all sides of the pitch. The four stands were named the Canton Stand, the Grange End, the Popular Bank and the Grandstand.
I could definitely do that. I do remember Ninian Park and saw a few games of Cardiff City playing there on the telly.
I went there for a midweek evening game in the middle of March 2009,my last opportunity to do so before it became history. The blue and white (and silver/grey?) rectangled exterior of new stadium,largely built by then,could be seen on the far side of a field across the road from the front of Ninian Park,which looked very 50s/60s and in a bit of disrepair. Inside it was a classic old-style match atmosphere,noisy and a little feisty at the edges. I remember being in a corner of the ground,with a stand at the end to me left having a large grey pitched roof with an old (beer?) advert on it.
I returned to Cardiff a year and a few days later,on the last Sunday of March 2010,to go to a match at the new stadium. This time it was what was left of Ninian Park,with two sides demolished,that was visible in the distance from the approach to the new stadium's front concourse. Inside,I found the new stadium to be a rather open,low-raked,round-edged square bowl of a venue,with banks of deep blue seating of course. That suited the spring weather,changable as it was.
My memories of Burnden Park are bitter sweet. I visited several times as a Luton supporter in the 1970s and each time something unpleasant happened - a reflection of troubled times in football in general. The most memorable match for me was a 1-0 6th round FA Cup win for Luton.
On a lighter note, Burnden Park was featured briefly featured in the 1955 Arthur Askey film, Love Match.

Just seen this posy after writing mine and that Day of the FA cup tie. Good game, bit tasty. Will never forget watching a Dart being thrown through the air from BW fans into the Luton fans. They weren't happy at all we had such a massive support and in there end.
It was a good game. The next tie at NU beating them NU fans singing "Super Mac is playing for Luton". We were in the home end so saw the two goals go in. Only to be drawn away to Sunderland in the semis and another long journey. We stuffed them the week before, Jimmy Ryan running rings around them. Sun had the last larf tho. Had so much fun in those days travelling away to the grounds.

@@DistortionGallery Yep dart came over us from the right and it went quiet. I was 19, remember a gap opening between the fans and I decide to show off and stood in the middle N Soul dancing. It was fun to see their fans so pisd off we were there and going nowhere. Next thing I’m collared and being led out, onto the pitch and destined to be nicked or thrown out. By the time we got to the main stand he let me go. Lucky escape. The days of youth and being lairy. It was a great cup run. At NU three of us were in the Leesers is it? We were in the Newcastle arms from 10am and with NU fans also from the pub. Singing the short walk to the ground singing away. They didn’t stay with us and cleared off, worried trouble would come. It didn’t. It was a great day until the announced we were off to Sunderland for the semi. I thought the team never turned up. So happens their team was full of future talent. Tueart, Portafield, Vic Halom, Watson etc. so many memories following Luton.

I used to go to every home game as a kid and I was at the final game against Charlton. The atmosphere of this ground was incredible.
It looked like it were heaving from the video I saw of the last game.

Went to Burnden Park, Saturday night game, because of the Grand National, was on the away open end, railway end. a three piece suite was thrown over the wall at us.

I visited burnden park for an Anglo Scottish cup match against Partick thistle (my team) in 1976. it was a doure game that ended 0-0 and it was a very cold wet night. Never been back.
Wow Partick Thistle. I remember Footy Adventures did a video on them, went to their ground and all.
@@historyoffootball87 I love footy adventures. Fir hill is a bit rough round the edges lot of history. We got to the semi finals that year and played Leyton orient. They beat us 1-0 in aggregate. Alan Hanson played for thistle then.
I was at that game also as 10 year old , I was in the Manchester road terrace close to the embankment I remember a handful of Partick fans in the embankment end 2 or 3 with teams colours scarfs and a st Andrew's flag and I can remember they had glam rock style hairstyles very 1976,

Bolton won the 1996-97 Division One Championship a month before the final game at Burnden (following a 2-1 victory at Maine Road).
My mistake, from what I read they were saying the win over Charlton confirmed promotion.
Fair mistake. That’s when they presented the trophy (for winning the league).
Stakes were the Wanderers were after a (precedent setting) 100 points/100 goals tally for the season. They went into that game needing 6 goals and 6 points from the final two fixtures.
They won 4-1 on the night then scored two on the final day (reaching the goal target) but ended up drawing their final game of the season 2-2 (so falling two short on the points one).

Nufc , Ginola , Ferdinand , Lee etc 1st game of the season . Nufc ended up winning 1-3 i think . When the 3rd goal went in we started to sing to the Bolton fans : " You only sing when youre shopping " 🤪

Yeah, visited twice. First was about 1973 last 16 FA cup quarter final BW v Luton. Covered end was split 50/50 LT & BW fans. BW were top Div-3, LT were Div2 or 1. 0-1 to the Hatters. Qtr-F. NU - LT 0-2. SF Sun -LT 1-0 . Sun beat Leeds U in Final. Football was so different then, but fun Drive away, pay on the styles and go home, unless you had ya collar felt.🥴

I know one of the stands was called The Railway End which ended up being sold to the Supermarket who built onto the ground.
I remember taking the home end at this ground back in the late 70s I think it was called the lever

Dec 1989. Penalty to Blackpool. Russell Coughlin to take and steps up, the pressure is on…….Hes hit it over. THE worst penalty Ive ever seen from a Blackpool player, it hit the Normid sign 🙈

Sat 17th April 1976 Burnden Park was my first ever football match aged 10.
Years later I contacted Granada & got a VCR of the game, years after that I had it converted to CD & then I uploaded to youtube

According to online sources they say it is in Greater Manchester but a lot of people on this video have already told me its not in Greater Manchester.
@@historyoffootball87Bolton is in *Greater* Manchester as part of a larger administative area. The rights & wrongs of that are still debated even though that change happened in 1974. Bolton is certainly not a part of Manchester like a mere suburb though.

@@historyoffootball87 I was born in Bolton Lancashire and its still in the historic county of Lancashire despite the government dictating an absurd name of a new administrative county in 1974 and totally decimating the county of Lancashire by removing 3 large areas from it to create Cumbria,Merseyside and Greater Manchester Counties.
