I do my settlements pretty much all the same. I use the scaffolding to make automated turret defense towers spaced several meters apart all around the perimeter of the settlement. I'll also add a few defense barricades but I very seldom use walls unless I'm building accommodations and stores for settlers.
Yea walls aren't really necessary, I do it more just to add a little realism. Later in the game you have so much more resources and money that it makes it easier to do.
@OmegaMan2112 I use the cheat holotape for unlimited caps and resources, which I use mostly for starlight drive-in, the castle, sanctuary, and spectacle island. I'll turn those places into metropolises. Everywhere else I leave it pretty basic.
