I've never ever fully shaved since my facial hair started growing 4 years ago, all i did was trim, trim, trim because i liked the look. Today, i did my first ever full shave & judging from this video, i did it horribly wrong! *Firstly*, i used a cheap 3 blade shaver, *secondly*, i used soap foam as shaving cream & *thirdly*, i did one & half passes, if that makes any sense. I can still feel the hairs protruding on my cheek line, chin & neck line & it's irritating. My paps never taught me how to shave & he always had a full beard with a slight trim for as long as i've known him. I guess this is how i learn & i definitely need to get my 'shave game up'! Subscribed!! :)
Great to see you back in front of the camera again and good to hear that you are able to have irritation-free shaves again after your horrible experience with a 'professional' straight razor shave! I always look forward to your next video. I like the way you communicate with your viewers, talking about what you've been up to. It's like catching up with a friend :-). You are doing a great job, so keep 'm comin'. Shave awesome!
Hey Nick love your videos and reviews. Very authentic and factual. Would like to know if you have a video which lists down the top soaps, creams and razors /brushes
Glad to see you back nick! I'm a new sub and it seemed after I clicked the button you stopped making videos. Turns out your face got beat up! D: I'm sorry. You've earned my sub though. Ways you've helped me get a better shave: The way you edit is also _really good_. I'm bad at making lathers and you've been the best resource so far. You show everything, and the lather reviews really helped me understand qualities of lather, like peaking and how long to load. I won't call out anyone, but people who cut out part of their process on youtube really left me somewhat confused and with unrealistic expectations. I firmly believe you've introduced people to lots and lots of products and purveyors. Certainly it's been things that I wouldn't find. The detail in your reviews about the feel and not just the scent has not gone unnoticed. Thanks for being here as a resource.
Great to see you back. I had a horrible straight shave experience also. It was my first straight shave ever. I know how you feel. The Gondolier soap was actually my first soap that I ever purchased as a new DE shaver. Great scent and feel.
Hey champ! Good to see you making those great videos Nick! Keep them coming and I'm waiting for those product reviews - especially blades (big THANK YOU for bring to my attention Voshkhod blades)! You're awesome!
So glad to see you back!!! I was actually just thinking today "hmm when is Nick gonna make a new video" then I get notification :) and I agree on Gondolier, excellent stuff!! Ouch, sound painful, i've never let someone shave me before. Not only do most pro straight shaves cost too much but they can only use cheap shavettes and canned goop :(
Hell yes I'm interested in an undyed omega knot in one of their quality solid handles! I can't believe that they don't already do this to compete with Semogue at their price point as well as having their cheaper brushes. Good to see you back making videos as well Nick, cheers.
good to see u back. i have a Omega 10065 Pure Bristle Shaving Brush yellow handle which i have been breaking for about 4 month its coming along great, turning into super soft
Nick, diggin' the videos! Thanks for all the great recommendations and tips and tricks! you've made me addicted to shaving haha. but above all else... Personna Lab Blue blades are absolutely spectacular. Feathers don't even compare. Keep up the good work my friend.
Ouch! Sorry to hear about the barber shave experience Nick… I've been wanting to do a barber shave for a while too…but hopefully it'll be a great experience though! Joe
Thanks so much for recommending the Merkur 34C, I got one and i'm enjoying it beyond compare to my many other safety razors. Perfect fit for my sesitive skin. Thanks Nick, great reviews sir!
Nick if you were here in tacoma Washington the mandustrial salon does excellent straight razor shaves. Also you can have a beer and play pool while you wait, I've always had a good shave and haircut.
Glad to see you back, and sounds like your probably glad to be home as you've been on the road a bit! Yes those brushes would great! I enjoy the Omega brushes I have and those would be nice to add. Be curious what you think of Speick, I love that scent and enjoyed the stick when I last travelled.
Hey Nick, Just wanted to say thank you for turning me on to VOSKHOD razor blades... Man these things are great... Gives great shaves everytime and less nic's Thanks again Jim
So you're a hotshot surgeon now and you don't need us shavers anymore, ha ha. We understand, and we're happy for you. Thanks for the videos. They're helpful for getting new wet-shavers.started. They helped me a couple years ago.
Welcome back! The brushes look fantastic. Will look into them for sure. Thanks for taking the time to make vids again, always look forward to seeing them when they come out, By the way, have you ever considered Saponificio Varesino soaps? I know you have a price point that you look at when you buy soaps but they all are fantastic and seem well worth the price in my opinion!
Here in Colombia, the only blades you can get are Dorco blades (the red ones, platinum covered), if you can, please make a review, I just use 5 of these and then the Personna and the difference was huge.
Hey Nick, You mentioned, in another video, that you make your own bath soap. I would live to see a how to video and recipe as I am considering getting into making my own at some point.
Will all of the shaving gear you mentioned fit in your shaving bag in you carry on luggage and will these items make it through the TSA people...i know that some razors are not allowed to be taken on plane in carry on luggage...thks
Hey Nick, I have the same brushes as you except it's banded...i purchased these brushes about a year ago they are beautiful brushes and I would definitely buy the natural blonde bristle brushes if they were available. I think you would have found that most boar brush users prefer the natural bristle look. Nick if these brushes are available please drop me a line and let me know where??? have a great sday
Hi Nick, Nice video - you make great ones !! I enjoyed the Q Brothers tour ! Now if I go to Chicago I'll know where to go . Glad to see you back. Too bad about the straight razor from the apparently unprofessional barber.
I was flying back from Bangkok to Amsterdam...02:20am flight so I thought I'd have a hot towel shave from Truefitt & Hill barbers earlier that day. I had one nick but a part from that it felt great...then I got back to my hotel room and felt areas where it wasn't smooth and close. I went for a few hours sleep, showered and very carefully went over the areas that wasn't smooth. I was pretty disappointed for the money I paid.
Nick I notice you only shave with the grain on the neck. I had my worst shave...being new to wet shaving de style. Had horrible razor burn on my neck. but only after I tried to go across grain. So from now on only with the grain. thanks.
Great shave Nick. Sorry to hear you got a bad straight razor shave man, it happens from time to time. I would love to see you try my old "go to" DE blades, Perma-Sharp in the Merkur 34C.
Hi Nick, glad you made another video. I don't mean to get off subject, but I recently inherited my great grandfathers Gillette super speed red tip. Do you know where I could send it to be repaired?
Hello nick...just wanted to ask your opinion on the Weishi 9306-c and the Weishi 9306-e.I watched reviews on these and people like them. These will be my first two double edge safety razors that ive bought. Amazon had them in stock.
Nick, I thank you for helping me as I started shaving with a safety razor about 3 months ago. Your videos have been extremely helpful. I took your advice and got a starter pack of blades from Amazon. Is is possible to find a starter pack of shaving soaps as well? Thanks again Nick!!
I'm an Illinois native and resident. Does Q Brothers inventory have soaps, etc., that run the gamut from Arko to the top artisan soaps? I'm very interested to go to Pasteur's some day, but if Q Brothers is the "Pasteur's plus" located here, then I will get there on my next trek north from West Central Illinois. Please enlighten me on their selection, if possible. Thanks!
I've been getting shitty shaves, using a merkur 34c, personna blades, a good synthetic brush, and what seems to be a shitty soap puck from GBS. Is the soap really that big of a factor?
Hey boss, how's it going? Just wanted to ask a question. I just had my first shave using a safety razor this week, and It was not nearly as close as everyone seemed to promise. I normally use Schick Hydro 5. I bought the Edwin DB87 and used the Derby blades. I have found with the hydro 5 I normally shave in many directions to get as much as possible. Should I do so with the safety razor? I was under the impression it is not a good idea to do so.
Definitely go with the grain and across the grain. If your skin can tolerate it, shave against the grain too! In time you can definitely get a closer shave with a safety razor once you get comfortable with it
hey Nick, question for you, what you you recommend in a safety razor blade for a lighter beard with a somewhat sensitive neck, made the mistake of my first shave with feather blades, definitely need something more forgiving... thanks
Nick it would be great to make a review with the pannacrema shaving soaps. They are tallow based Italian soaps and I see them a lot in many stores lately. Thank you!
Nick: Welcome back, to videos and the Personna Labs. Have you found that the newer white paper wrapped Labs perform any differently from the older blue wrapped Labs?
+Edward Miles For what it's worth.....Personna Med Preps, which are more expensive, are a bit sharper and last longer than the Personna Lab Blues. Still a great value. Made in America too!
@nick shaves I truly appreciate your videos man, they have changed my life and my face forever! I have to shave just like you on your neck because ingrown hairs and I have been getting great results, but I'm wondering how close you get on your neck? I don't think anyone can see a shadow on mine, but when I rub against the grain I can totally feel it. Does it really matter? Thanks again and keep up the videos!
+nick shaves Yea, I figured as much. I had a "straight razor shave" (shavette) done in Italy and it was similar to yours; one of the worst shaves of my life. At least the barber used a brush though, but that left me feeling pretty gross because I was bleeding after the first pass and he re-lathered using the brush so I figure the brush couldn't be that clean for me and certainly not for the next person. The lather he created was great and he prepped my face well, so I really think these horror stories about these "straight razor" shaves at barbers has everything to do with the disposable blades they use in the shavette.
Nice to see you back! I'd like to see you use one of the super aggressive razors sometime like the R41, do you have any of the stainless razors? I've become a big fan of above the tie lately although my wallet has a different opinion lol
Awesome! Great to see you back in action! Bummed to hear about your horrid straight razor shave experience. My first Professional S.R. shave was horrible as well, and it was actually my first shave ever. My I ask, did the barber actually go against the grain? I personally don't know of any professional barbers that do, but some try to go kind of a "diagonal" sort of way, going upwards almost, which I find for me, irritates me just the same as going against. Maybe next time, that's if there is a next time, advise the barber to only shave you with the grain, they should oblige out of request and you should still get a pretty close shave. : )
How many brushes do you have Nick? Must be over 30. Why don't you use synthetics?I would like to hear your opinion on the recent Plisson-like fiber brushes,Razorock,Stirling,ShaveRevolution,Crown King etc. Thank you.
Hey Nick, First of all awesome vids! You're probably my most viewed channel. I've got a question. Like you I had a sensitive skin plus a grease prone skin. I was wondering why you first use an after shave AND an after shave balm? Greets from Belgium!
Hey Nick, I would love to see you review the Gillette 7 O'clock blade series. There are three different types that I have seen: Sharp Edge, (yellow package) Super Stainless, (green package) and Super Platinum (black/grey package). I would love to see your opinion and expertise on these blades to see the difference with them. Great videos man, keep it up!
+Dillon Jacobs There are 2 different types of green. The super stainless (Russian) which are good and the Permasharp (India) which are generally regarded as junk. I believe there is also a red and blue packaging.
Hey bro! Just wondering if this is the same people as how to grow a mustache? Also, can you give some pointers on how to get extra close under your chin and on the throat? Thanks man!!!
hey nick, I really enjoy your videos! I was wondering, do you know anything about head shaving? I currently shave mine with a DE razor and I'm having a hell of a time doing so. If not , do you have any UA-cam or website recommendations?
Q-BRO'S Shop was the best video to date Nick. Sorry the straight razor was a disappointment, but shit happens & i'm sure the next time you will get rewarded for perseverance! I watched in Thailand as a mate got the thai version with a shavette and i almost cried! seemed happy enough or was to proud to show any emotion but his face looked like a WW2 battle zone! I decided then and their, DE's for me with good creams! But im open to giving one a try (some day) too...
Whenever i shave, it feels like my razor is dragging across my skin rather than gliding. I know its probably due to my dry skin when i get out of the shower but its really annoying. I know for sure it isnt a lather problem, so does anyone have a solution to this?
I recommend using no pressure at all, just sit your razor on your skin and let the weight of the razor do the job for you (feel the angle of your razor), also use a fresh blade (I change it every 3-4 shaves), you may need to add a preshave oil to your prep and add more water to your lather in order to increase its slickness. I hope this helps
nick shaves Thanks for the reply. My current setup is: Muhle r89, Astra Platinums (although I've tried feathers and gillette platinums with the same result), I have a good amount of soaps that I cycle through but the result is still the same. I tend to use TOBS soap or cream most of the time but also cycle in soap commander or dapper dragon every once in a while. I always shave right after a shower and wash my face with a gentle cleanser in the shower as well. The dragging is especially bad on the neck. The razor drags across the skin, not because of my beard coarseness, considering I have rather soft facial hair and feel no pulling at all. I've used one pre shave before and it didn't do much but I would really prefer to not have to spend money on pre shaves since the soap should do the job. My skin does feel pretty dry after a shower, but I've tried shaving without showering or washing my face and it still dragged and felt really dry. The lather feels super slick but the soap seems to dry the top layer of my skin which makes it drag.
+jacob lahr Update: I realized the problem was that my previous face wash that I would use in the shower before shaving was drying out my skin. I switched to a face wash for dry skin and it helped a lot. thanks anyways
+jacob lahr Good to hear you found a solution. Can I ask whether you bloom your soaps and apply the bloom water to your face? Even if I don't bloom a soap, I'll just rub a little soap on my wet fingertips and rub it into my wet facial hair, focusing on rubbing against the grain. Then I start face lathering. I mention this because I've had similar troubles due to my skin just not retaining moisture after showering. Mitchell's Wool Fat works well for me. Another option may be cold water shaving, which can desensitise your skin a bit.
Is there any chance you could bump body shop stuff up your list please Nick, is is very easy/inexpensive to get in the UK compared to lots of the US artisan soaps :)
I had a straight razor shave, when I went to Turkey in 1994, was pretty good, I use a disposable, have done for well over 30 years. Before I used a de razor, could never get or keep the angle right, with massive cutting, bloody horrible. Then I brought a de razor 15 months ago, with the brush and soap, but as of yet, they all remain untouched in there boxes. Just too damn scared. But a great video.
Welcome back! I notice you never go cross-grain on your neck...do you find you get a close enough shave doing multiple passes in the same direction, or is it an irritation thing? I can't go against the grain, but I can do cross-grain in the neck area.
+MCKerrnel i have similar problem with the neck. for me multiple passes makes somewht of a difference but overall shave looks uneven cuz some of the areas I get really close shave with jus one pass. So I do go cross-grain but on 1-1.5 setting on my adjustable progressive. wrks great for me. Lower neck area, where some peopl get skin fold line, I have to go against the grain, otherwise i cant get clean look.
My advice is never, ever go to a barber for a shave. Always do it yourself, as much as it may seem to be a nice treat. Only you know your face and how to shave it. I told the barber where I was sensitive etc and he just went ahead anyway and screwed my face up. My face was sore for nearly 2 weeks, had in-grown hairs, dry skin patches and very bad razor burn on my neck. I couldn't even touch my face without being in pain. Glad you are back on the mend!
Great review Nick.
It's cool how you film the mirror and still make it look like your looking straight at the camera it amazes me
Hey Nick love your videos and reviews. Very authentic and factual. Would like to know if you have a video which lists down the top soaps, creams and razors /brushes
Yes, I am one of those guys that like the natural color bristles. Good to see you back.
Glad to see you back nick! I'm a new sub and it seemed after I clicked the button you stopped making videos. Turns out your face got beat up! D: I'm sorry. You've earned my sub though. Ways you've helped me get a better shave:
The way you edit is also _really good_.
Had a bad shave with a lot of razor burn the other day. Went to one of your videos and got some good pointers. Good shave yesterday. Thanks
So glad to see you back!!! I was actually just thinking today "hmm when is Nick gonna make a new video" then I get notification :) and I agree on Gondolier, excellent stuff!!
Ouch, sound painful, i've never let someone shave me before. Not only do most pro straight shaves cost too much but they can only use cheap shavettes and canned goop :(
Glad you're back, Nick!

Hey Nick,
Just wanted to say thank you for turning me on to VOSKHOD razor blades... Man these things are great... Gives great shaves everytime and less nic's
Thanks again Jim
Awesome! They are great blades, easily among my favorite
So you're a hotshot surgeon now and you don't need us shavers anymore, ha ha. We understand, and we're happy for you. Thanks for the videos. They're helpful for getting new wet-shavers.started. They helped me a couple years ago.

Yes I'll buy both brushes...they look nice
I found your channel a few days ago, and have now been looking for a good one for women for a safety razor. I know I need a longer handle though.
Here in Colombia, the only blades you can get are Dorco blades (the red ones, platinum covered), if you can, please make a review, I just use 5 of these and then the Personna and the difference was huge.
Glad to see you're alive and well Nick!! I personally would love to see some Gillette blade reviews. Silver Blue and the 7 o'clocks to be specific.
Welcome back! Next time you're in NYC and heading to Pastures...message me. I go there all the time.
my fall back razor is a 64 Gillette slim adjustable at setting of 2. prossaro white shave soap. and Gillette silver blue blade.
Hey Nick,
You mentioned, in another video, that you make your own bath soap. I would live to see a how to video and recipe as I am considering getting into making my own at some point.
Doing any more blade reviews??
Would buy a brush like that for sure
Just to let you know I would be interested in one of those brushes.
I want to see your review on the proraso, since it's my go-to soap
What about the DE wee ×2 shave-plus. It's just arrived on the market and is very rare
Will all of the shaving gear you mentioned fit in your shaving bag in you carry on luggage and will these items make it through the TSA people...i know that some razors are not allowed to be taken on plane in carry on luggage...thks
Question: How do you keep your soap after use? Won't it get mold if you put the lid back on after use? Do you need to dry it first and so on?
Hey Nick, I have the same brushes as you except it's banded...i purchased these brushes about a year ago they are beautiful brushes and I would definitely buy the natural blonde bristle brushes if they were available. Hi Nick, Nice video - you make great ones !! I enjoyed the Q Brothers tour ! Now if I go to Chicago I'll know where to go . Glad to see you back. Too bad about the straight razor from the apparently unprofessional barber.
Glad your back and yes I am interested in getting one of those brushes especially if you recommend it
Sounds good! I am liking the brushes very much

Good video I wish I could do more than one pass. How do you feel about pre shave oils?

I always enjoy you videos.
You a better man than me I would have named and shamed the "The Butcher Barber"
Review the dorco blades!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Which Pasteur location did you visit: 34th Street or Lexington Avenue?
Does anyone know how the Merkur 34c compares to the Edwin Jagger DE89(my favorite razor)?
whats the next blade review?
Hey im sure you get this all the time, but how would compare the DE89 vs the 34C? I am a new wet shaver looking for my first razor. Thanks!
Would you consider doing a video on the Green Mountain soap company? Came highly regarded by the Q-brothers
Great shave Nick. Sorry to hear you got a bad straight razor shave man, it happens from time to time. I would love to see you try my old "go to" DE blades, Perma-Sharp in the Merkur 34C.
"Just got out of the shower, facial hair's cleaned out, hydrated, ready to go"--that's when you know it's about to get good!!!!
Nick, what is an undyed? or untied? knot. at your suggestion i recently obtained
the omega 10066. i like it and am breaking it in.
my exact post shave routine with Thayer's & Nivea 👍
Hi Nick, glad you made another video. I don't mean to get off subject, but I recently inherited my great grandfathers Gillette super speed red tip. Do you know where I could send it to be repaired?
Razor emporium. I've heard good things about them. What a great thing to inherit!
Thanks Nick
How often do you shave?
Can you review Crystal blades? I heard a lot of good things about these Glad your back Thanks

(The q brothers video)
Just watched it.....and wow! I have to get there! I'll be sure to let them know how I heard about them.....thanks for sharing and posting!

Nick, will you review the Gillette Silver Blue blades, please? Glad to see you back!
I'm beginning to start shaving with a safety razor, what preshave oil and cream/soap and brush do you recommend?
great video
I'm curious: for your straight razor shave in Chicago, did the barber use an actual straight razor or a shavette? Thanks in advance.
It was a shavette. You cannot get a straight razor shave in the US anymore, due to hygiene/health codes. They must use a shavette with a fresh blade
+nick shaves Yea, I figured as much. I had a "straight razor shave" (shavette) done in Italy and it was similar to yours; one of the worst shaves of my life. Nice to see you back! I'd like to see you use one of the super aggressive razors sometime like the R41, do you have any of the stainless razors? I've become a big fan of above the tie lately although my wallet has a different opinion lol
I'm planning a West Coast tour soon, can you recommend any shaving stores around Vegas/LA/San Francisco/San Diego?
Do a Shave Brush Jimmy brush review. He makes great brushes.
Do maca root review next video please!
+Abhishek Sharma Yes Maca Root for me too - I find it great would value your opinion, Nick
Abhishek Sharma its an awesome cream and the mad scientist of wet shaving video exactly describes its scent.
Thank you.
Hey Nick,
First of all awesome vids! You're probably my most viewed channel.
I've got a question. Like you I had a sensitive skin plus a grease prone skin.
I was wondering why you first use an after shave AND an after shave balm?
Greets from Belgium!
What kind of straight razor did that barber use? A pair of scissors?
+Gaylord Focker or a blunt spoon
Hey Nick, I would love to see you review the Gillette 7 O'clock blade series. There are three different types that I have seen: Sharp Edge, (yellow package) Super Stainless, (green package) and Super Platinum (black/grey package). I would love to see your opinion and expertise on these blades to see the difference with them. Great videos man, keep it up!
You've got it! Stay tuned
+Dillon Jacobs There are 2 different types of green. The super stainless (Russian) which are good and the Permasharp (India) which are generally regarded as junk. I believe there is also a red and blue packaging.
anyone try them israeli blades? yhem things are sharp!!! forget what theyre called
+mresurm yeah I have tried the Russian ones, although I have never seen the blue and red ones
Hey bro! Just wondering if this is the same people as how to grow a mustache? Also, can you give some pointers on how to get extra close under your chin and on the throat? Thanks man!!!
Yes. How to Grow a Mustache rebranded themselves as PAA. But when they did that, they also changed the formula too.
hey nick, I really enjoy your videos! I was wondering, do you know anything about head shaving? I currently shave mine with a DE razor and I'm having a hell of a time doing so. If not , do you have any UA-cam or website recommendations?
I'm looking for some blades a little sharper than the persona
Astra Super Platinum👌🏼
MMMbop thanks
You need need to let us know when you are coming to Maggard Razor. 😎
even tho i dont grow a beard i subscribed to your channel :D
Q-BRO'S Shop was the best video to date Nick. Sorry the straight razor was a disappointment, but shit happens & i'm sure the next time you will get rewarded for perseverance! I watched in Thailand as a mate got the thai version with a shavette and i almost cried! seemed happy enough or was to proud to show any emotion but his face looked like a WW2 battle zone! I decided then and their, DE's for me with good creams! But im open to giving one a try (some day) too...
It be great to see you review some British Artisan soaps e.g Nanny Silly Soap is awesome
Whenever i shave, it feels like my razor is dragging across my skin rather than gliding. I know its probably due to my dry skin when i get out of the shower but its really annoying. I know for sure it isnt a lather problem, so does anyone have a solution to this?
Weird! What's your current set up? Razor/blades/shave soap? Do you shave right after showering?
Gondolier is great stuff!!
This guys gotta be in sales. Certainly sounds like it
Is there any chance you could bump body shop stuff up your list please Nick, is is very easy/inexpensive to get in the UK compared to lots of the US artisan soaps :)
The Hydra would be great!
Tell Omega to make the brushes available to the public!
