    One suggestion for a future episode, it would of be very interesting to see how The WatchBox takes in, authenticates & tests pre-owned Rolex watches before they are offered for sale.

      You need patience, money, AD needs to like you, and persistence. It is possible -but simply ready to wait a loong time. I recently bought my first AP after an 8 month waiting period and zero purchase history. The days of walking in and purchasing immediately are over. They also want repeat customers. With my Rolex AD- I also have the option of buying other watch brands and jewelry. This builds your purchase buying power- and you will be shocked just how much faster you will receive your watch. I know a friend (spends big bucks)- asked for a black dial Daytona- he received it in 3 weeks- I KID YOU NOT. How? It was in the safe and the AD simply decided to allocate it to him. They have the watches. They ARE receiving plenty according to my AD- they simply don’t display them - and then they allocate certain pieces to certain people. For your first purchase- requesting a HOT MODEL is a bad move. Anything is possible - but 8,000 other people want that same watch. I received a oyster flex Rose Gold Rhodium skydweller in 6 days. How? It was in the safe- once I requested the model- my AD called me and said they have one if I was interested. The reason? It’s a $45,000 watch (after taxes) and not EVERYONE wants that model. Its also not a typical model that you can flip for 2 or 3 times retail. It built my buying power and I specifically love that watch. For the sport models- I WILL get them…..but they take TIME. Be respectful and persistent. You CAN get at retail. It doesn’t hurt to register your interest. If you want a hot model - that’s gong to be tough. The AD’s have no “flipper-meter”. They need to get to know you and build a “relationship”. They don’t know who the flippers are vs genuine collectors. Go to your local AD- register your interest, and be persistent without be annoying. You will be surprised. For instant gratification- those days are over. Your only option is grey market if you want it NOW. Good luck- remember - it CAN’T hurt to ask- you lose nothing.

      Not really, I reserved mine 3-4 months back at AD and picking it up tomorrow. Never purchased a watch from this AD. They serviced two watches for me in the past.

    Great conversation, and so many great points. I was/am lucky to have purchased the Rolex I wanted and was MY grail, the Air-King. People dis it and say it’s “entry level”, or the “red-headed step-child”, but it’s the one that spoke the most to ME. And, I was lucky enough to purchase it at retail at the start of the pandemic. Someone who loves the uniqueness of a reference or has true passion and love for horology I don’t think can get hurt in this world as a buyer because all the things you spoke of are baked in. It’s the ones with more money than sense and cash burning a hole in their pocket that make the market so volatile. Rolex and Patek have proven something is worth what someone is willing to pay for it, and I don’t think that will ever change.

    This is a good topic for discussion. You emphasized box & papers for watches since the 1990's, but what about vintage watches that do not have the papers? Years ago many buyers did not keep the papers, or may have lost them over the years. I am seeing pre-1990's watches sold by reputable dealers without the papers, so I am hesitating. One concern is how could I sell the watch if I do not have the original papers. What would WatchBox recommend to collectors about buying these watches without their papers?

    As an ardent fan of Mr. Mosso's since his Watchuwant days~ I must say that this episode shouldn't exist. I'm not targeting any companies (or individuals) specifically, although it's clear which are in highest demand. This Run on luxury goods is a symptom of an financial system that operates with different rules (fiat) from it's economic consumers (capital). This issue started with sovereign wealth funds and it's trickled down to Luxury assets. It's only a matter of time before we see basic necessities sky-rocket in "value" with this new layer of "retail" to veil inflation and the real monetary issue of money valued in debt (self-eating snake). Perhaps a challenge to any watch company (I'm thinking Droz) to produce a "Tulip Countdown" Timer would be appropriate. In the meantime, let's keep chasing assets.

I'm torn, because I want to gift my fiancee a DateJust for our wedding and I don't know wether to go for a 2000s 26mm model (roughly 6500€), or just trying to buy new...the older reference would be 79173..Thanks a lot and cheers from Italy

    Great discussion...I see some of the negative comments but disagree....dealing with a private seller might turn out great and if there is a publicize track record, that's wonderful....but if not, it might be best to work with a known entity with a history that one can rely on....having dealt with Watchbox, I was confident that I was working with an established entity that stands behind its product.....so it is wise to read up on who you are dealing with....always great to see Mike and Tim talking watches....very relatable and interesting....thanks guys!

      Not exactly because the service card didn't say when it was bought or who bought it. It does "prove" authenticity but it also doesn't guarantee that all parts are original to the watch anymore, since the service card shows that it was serviced (and potentially some parts were swapped out).

    I grew up with all my family wearing Rolex and I remember thinking one day I would get one. Well now I can afford it and duh du duhhhh can't get one. So I ordered a Palm Dial, and waiting.... and waiting.... still waiting. Here they continue to pump out new watches but they can't seem to get around to fulfilling the orders they already have. Guess my money isn't good enough. And my respect for Rolex went from the top to almost rock bottom, great job Rolex! 👎

      Unfortunate to hear! Look around and broaden your view, there are so many amazing watches out there for the same prize but with better value, unless of course you really just want that Rolex. In my collecting journey my philosophy is that I just have to get one Rolex to tick off that box but apart from that I’m more interested in JLC, Lange, Vacheron, Omega and even Tudor

    • @omarion07
      @omarion07 2 роки тому

      So what was Rolex supposed to do? Were they supposed to be “Guys, this dudes family all wear Rolex so we need to get him the Palm motif DJ ASAP… and give him a SS Sub on top of it for free to reward his family’s loyalty to our company”. You do realise Rolex is not in charge of sales to customers and that’s left to ADs. Rolex can certainly provide recommendations to ADs to sell to first time buyers, but again at the discretion of ADs.

    What a bunch of bullshit , with buy the seller , all the crap they talking , this is all about the rock high prices they charging as they can’t compete with private seller and with there prices , as if they sell you watch that broke down they sold you a bad watch to start with , if you buy a good watch in good condition to start with you don’t have to worry about watch as it will go for years with out it needing a service,are you telling me they never buy a watch from the public or private seller in part exchange and then sell that watch on , and maybe give it a service , watch them buy watches at trade show and all they do is spend five seconds looking at watch and buy it on just how it looks ,what they mean by if it to good true to be true is we can’t sell it at that price as we need big mark up to pay for big business we running , this is all aimed at trying to nock private sellers as they can’t compete with there prices so the best form of defence is to attack,plus don’t buy unless it got warranty card ,hang on they not taking there own advice as they sell watch with out original warranty card plus they started of small just like private sellers back in day ,so what they saying you should of never bought watch of them when they started out in the business,also have noticed with all grey market dealers now pushing watch brands and models they use to slag off and tell you they not sell as not that good or don’t sell in grey market , but now they pushing them to sell as can’t get all watches they use be able to get ,selling watches they use call dogs ,so just proves they full bullshit , example they talk up two tone now when use slag them off and use say two says can’t afford full gold watch but only got steel money , but now they say they good value and get gold look and two great now as can wear yellow gold or white gold jewellery and it will match ,
