    I have attached think it's a great affordable way to buy a direct drive pedal to try out over the space of say six months so you can get used to the way a ddrive feels, I needed a good two months to get the right muscle memory programmed in my playing memory, once I had I really ended up loving ddrives, I added heavier beaters and a better linkage bar, better springs, I put the tama speed cobra foot board springs under the board and upgraded the bearings in the pedal to some high end skate board ones and the pedal is amazing (5 years on it's still doing great)

    I found the connecting beam/rod to be too short and when maxed out but still having both screws locked on the beam you could tell it wouldn't hold up over time. I'm 5'9", so someone over 6' I'd assume would have some issues. Aside from that it's a pretty good pedal, responsive and the foot board's length is really comfortable.

    Funny hearing chain drive described as a 'normal 'pedal'. Back in the day a lot of pedals were direct drive and I remember when the DW5000 first came out they were going on and on about their chain drive mechanism. Oh, and back then, DW was just as expensive as it is now!

    I bought a Ludwig Speed King from my paper route money when I was 14yo, I am now 55yo and that pedal is still going strong.
    Why do I mention this? It is also a direct drive style pedal, and once you get use to them, you will be hard pressed to go back to a chain drive pedal, like has been mentioned before.
    Thanks for the review, I will have to check the double pedal out.

      Smurf431...Same here. I even went with second kick drum because Ludwig didn't have a double pedal back then. So I have two speed kings. I am now 51 and still have both. They are a little squeaky but that is what makes them great to me!

    • @stevefreeman6186
      @stevefreeman6186 6 років тому +4

      Lol - I "inherited" a Ludwig set over 40 yrs ago, with the Speed King. My only beef was the connector between the pedal and the actual mallet would hit, then break. Finding replacement for that was a royal pain. When I look at this review with the "cobalt" connector I have the same concern about it breaking. Where I live in rural Indiana, music shops are few and far between. I've not played for 5+ yrs now, but thinking of dusting them off "for my retirement". Yes, my speedking squeeks too!

      I'm a younger kid, but my first kit I picked up a few years back was a 70's Ludwig. Came with a cheapo chain drive that I hated, and it was the first thing to go. Got a used speed king really cheap online, and I don't think I could use a chain drive again. That's why I'm picking up one of these double pedals ;)

    Hey Sweetwater, how's this bad boy stack up against the Pearl Demonator? I've loved my demonator direct drive and love the powerful feel from it, but it's very high maintenance and high price. Does this PDP deliver power? That's the main problem I've had out of most pedals is the feel is just never right, no matter how I adjust it. Thanks!

    • @sweetwater
      @sweetwater  8 років тому +12

      +Left4Green
      Hello Left4Green! I felt the PDP direct drive had quite a lot of power behind it. Especially when I did faster dbl strokes. As far as how it compares to the Demonator, it has a long board and a 2 two way beater that is very lite, which for me helped get those really hard hits. Kick pedals can become such personal pieces to a drummer. Especially if you play the same one for many years. It becomes part of you. Direct drive, for me, takes some getting used to, but this one comes in at a great price and is really well made so it could be a nice option if you want to try something else. Keep on rockin!

      Since this an older video, before we had our own dedicates video facility, it was mic'd with a Royer R-121 ribbon mic (www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/R121) about 1 foot or so in front of the kick drum - and a Rode NT4 stereo mic (www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/NT4 ) above the kit. Simple but effective. I hope that helps. Take care, Nick

      I play in 2 metal bands and i bought the pedal more or less 1,5 year ago.
      The connecting piece from the direct drive to the footboard is VERY weak. First the one on the main pedal broke about 1 month ago, i had it repaired and this week the left one broke as well. They both broke in the exact same way.
      I googled this problem and it seems to be common.
      I do play with the springtension on max and there's a lot of fast double bass going on, but still.. the pedal shouldn't break so soon in my opinion.
      I definitely wouldn't recommend this pedal for a metal drummer.

      I've read some reviews on the internet, some people say that their drive train piece broke after a while, so there might be some durability issues. CzarCustom Hello. For my unpleasant surprise, the pedals didnt fit for me at all. They were really, really heavy and the direct link felt really weird for me after playing with chain link pedals. Maybe after a while I could have gotten used to it, but they felt so heavy that I ended up returning them after two weeks. If the weight of the pedal is not an issue for you, these might not be bad at all. Hope this helps!

    Bought this foot pedal after a good review. This pedal didn't feel good from the start and I thought it was me. The very expert Leon Keppels of tunnel Music Arnhem discovered plays everywhere, making this pedal rattling and unstable very difficult to use. He turned out all the play and for 2 months I was able to use this pedal quite well. Unfortunately, the clearances and the rattling sound are back again. So a complete bad buy!

    This pedals SUCK....... I have the chaindrive version my self and ive borrowed the direct drive version from a friend who got a dw 9000 played with it for a about 15 minutes and everything started to fall apart.....the spring tension from tight went to tottaly loose and the linkage (i dont how its is called english is my second language so there might be mistakes)that connect the two pedals just fell off if you want to buy a double pedal dont do the mistake and by one of these two models.If you are considering buying it because of the price just remember that it wont last long.

    FYI these pedals are such pieces of crap that I would absolutely NEVER recommend you buy them. Why? They are CHEAP. The drives snap, the pedal is so close to the ground in all scenarios that you cannot get a decent kick. Beater all the way back? NOPE. Spring tension all the way tight? NOPE. That pedal will not move more than 2 inches from the ground.
    How do I know? I tried and tried and tried to make these pieces of junk work but they never would. I played on them for almost a year, had nothing but issues (squeaking, snapping parts, ridiculously long spring tension shafts, poorly designed and manufactured in general) and could never get them adjusted right. Absolutely do not buy them, you have been warned. Mine ended up in the trash where they belonged.

      Good man you just saved me £200. I'll just pay the extra few quid for the demon drive. Many thanks 👍
