  • Does your 2024 iPad Pro M4 tandem OLED display look "grainy"? What causes it, why should we care (or not), and is the graininess a deal-breaker for me? 🧐

      @@manoharmeka999 there is no blooming on an OLED screen since its pixels emit light on an individual level (we talk about millions of pixels vs just hundred/thousand zones on mini LED). The problem you see here is due to his camera.

    The only OLED panel I have ever seen grain as depicted on the M4 iPad Pro is from the 2020 Motorola Edge Plus. That phone used a cheap quality off brand OLED panel designed by Samsung but is officially manufactured by Ygpmoiki in Taiwan. I wonder if this is the same situation of the OLED panel in the iPad 🤔.

    I own lots of OLEDs and this is just a weakness of OLEDs at low brightness. The evenness of dim grays is one of the few strengths of LCDs, but OLEDs are still overall superior.

      Grain makes a display useless for anyone doing graphic design. The only advantage OLED has is black blacks, but Mini-LED has that as well. At the same time, black black is something you only see in dark rooms anyway.

      @@pressrepeat2000 It appears the grain is only there on grays at low brightness levels. If I was doing graphic work on an OLED I would turn the brightness to at least 50% if not higher.

    I also own lots of oleds. It‘s not a Samsung-issue, it‘s a technology-issue. My LG Oled TV has it, my Tab S9 Plus has it, my iPhone 15 Pro has it, my Steam Deck Oled has it and I can even see it on my Apple Watch S9 if I look closely. Yes, some of those displays are provided by Samsung. However, I remember it was super irritating on my LG V30 back in the days, but tech has evolved since then. I also notice it on both of my portable INNOCN Oled monitors, which have displays supplied by BOE.
    It is NOT limited to Samsung. It‘s a technology shortcoming that I would take 10 out of 10 times since I absolutely hate displays with backlight.
    Haven‘t seen the M4 iPads in person, but since I‘m sensitive to it, I‘m sure I‘d notice it right away. It has never bothered me too much, though. Low res Oleds with pentile or diamond matrix were super terrible for me, but the grainy greys on high res oleds are absolutely acceptable for me.

    Some advice, I reckon if you were to buy a new iPad, the M2 iPad Air is perhaps the more suited choice because of this, but if you desperately need the 120Hz ProMotion display and the best cameras, and best RAM (8GB for 256/512GB, 16GB for 1TB+), the M2 iPad Pro is perfect.
    If the grainy display in the M4 iPad Pro really is a hardware problem and something that can’t be addressed in a software update, maybe Apple might recall this hyped OLED iPad? Certainly could be possible, if enough people complain about this display issue.
    Despite the hype around the OLED display, the M4 iPad Pro probably might not be perfect, unless you want a grainy display. That’s not to say you shouldn’t buy it, because some folks might really need that heavy amount of power (M4, 16GB RAM, 1TB+), and they probably just wouldn’t even care about the small detail. Even then, there are some users who don’t even notice this issue on their devices, no matter how hard they try to spot the grainy display. Fortunately, my OLED iPhone does not have this issue.

    This feels very inconsistent. First you state that the blacks are a huge benefit of OLED, then you say that you only see the grain in dimly lit environments. But that’s when you only benefit from deep blacks as well, you can’t see these blacks in bright rooms anyway.

    • @pressrepeat2000
      @pressrepeat2000 Місяць тому +2

      This is a completely separate issue. It’s due to uneven current supply to various pixels in the OLED panel. That causes grain in colors that are neither very dark or very bright, and is specifically very visible in greys. So with OLED you get black blacks, but very grainy greys. Not on all panels, but most of them.
