Hi Jeb, This is the first of your videos I've seen and not being a Virgin fan from when they commenced as a single class airline, the direct comparison was interesting. My experience with Qantas crews has consistently been the antithesis of yours, perhaps they were managing issues behind the scenes? Regarding Vegemite, while not encouraging you to do it again, your test was guaranteed to have the outcome it had, by the manner in which it was conducted. Admittedly Aussie kids get toasted crust with Vegemite to "gum" when they are teething, so it's almost inevitable that they will become lifelong lovers of the spread. However, the way to sample it is, spread warm toast liberally with butter. Allow the butter to melt and then apply a barely perceptual layer of vegemite; eat while the toast is still warm. Enjoy it with a good milk based espresso coffee.

As a frequent business class traveller I did a similar comparison in October (Brisbane -> Darwin with Virgin 737-800) (Darwin -> Brisbane with QANTAS 737-800). I have been flying with Qantas for 20+ years, and if you had done the same comparison 5 years ago Virgin would have come a distant second place. Recently though they have improved their product (especially service) to the point where I believe Qantas needs to up their service.
This was an awesome review! I think both airlines with both of their unique products out done themselves! But that Vegemite reaction! OMG that was halarious!!!
Virgin Australia by far, the service was amazing , very personalised plus they served alcohol at breakfast time , where when my mate flew Qantas he got offered water or cranberry juice for a flight at the same time to the same destination

As always, your reviews are excellent! That said... Regarding this review: Yes, VA would happily provide bedding on request for any transcon domestic flight. Beyond that, you've missed some critical factors: * VA provide kerbside lounge entry in Sydney and Brisbane (with a private security lane) for those with lounge access - Qantas do not. * The VA lounge entrance in Melbourne is landside, with the exit providing a private security lane to transition to airside - Qantas do not. * VA status is far more obtainable than QF status in Australia, as is gifting of Gold or Platinum status. * QF refuses to check through baggage on separate tickets (and their partners other than AS do the same), meanwhile VA happily does. Flying from MEL to SEA (with at least one mandatory stop) never requires me to collect and recheck outside of Customs requirements for a combination of VA and DL. * Perth has the most amazing Sushi offerings in the country * Kingsford Smith airport makes LAX look like paradise * VA has a total of 3 earning charts and 2 redemption charts - Qantas has a multitude in each category. Regarding the statement that Virgin Australia is not part of an alliance, given the relationship between VA and SQ (and loyalty point transfer between the two) as well as their relationship with DL and EY, the statement you've made regarding destinations available is something that deserves discussion given the currencies involved. All that said, please stay awesome!
1. Vegemite is better on toast with a good amount of butter 2. Re bedding, I have used this virgin A330 service and blankets were provided upon asking. 3. Keep up the videos. Please.
Jeb, you tried Vegemite the wrong way! Hot toast with lashings of butter THEN top with the vegemite! It’s also delicious when you top it with a poached egg or sliced tomato 😉
they have a wonderful product with outstanding Irish hospitality. We did DUB - JFK and they just fed us so much it was great. Super comfy and spacious seat. The only negative is that the flight was far too short...coming back it was only 5 hours and 30 minutes.
@@GreenerGrass try and test them from the West Coast. The east coast services to Dublin are far too short to enjoy and get a decent rest. But going East from Dublin is fine. Looking forward to seeing your review in 2019
To be most fair you'd have to take each product twice: Qantas from Sydney to Perth, VA from Perth to Sydney, VA from Sydney to Perth, and then Qantas from Perth to Sydney. But that would mean twice the cost. I look forward to finally being able to fly either airline to Australia one day.
if you try local flights (SYD-MEL/ADL-CNB or so) you will find that Qantas is a lot better, you have to pay for good food and drinks on virgin, Qantas offer inflight entertainment, free food, free drinks including free alcohol in economy class, domestic flights definitely Qantas for me, good vid tho brother!
Mr Brooks, I have watched you video, and as a born and bred Australian I took exception to some of your points. After wheels up, the Staff allow you time to settle in before service, unless you are on a SYD - CBR flight where there is just enough time to serve and retrieve before it is time to prepare for landing. So they were not slow in serving. In Aust we eat, not gorge like pigs at the trough. I have been to the States where you either starve yourself prior to going out or you get a 'doggie bag' to take away a portion of the served meal that would feed a starving family of four! So the amount of food served is correct and sufficient for most people, if you want more request back-ups (second helping). Learn Australian meal terms, Hors d'oeuvre, Entrée, Main Course, Dessert. Vegemite is eaten as a thin scrape on hot buttered toast, not by the spoon out of the jar, it is not jam, heathen!
Okay. This will be long: WOW...great trip, Jeb! Hi, Paul! “Trans Continental Throw “Downunder”. Brilliant!! A330’s, yay, one of my favorite planes. Jeb, your music choices are awesome! And yes, HSBC really is on every jet bridge in the world. I like that you like the cubby; me, too. The plane spotting was a bonus; nice 47 and 57! I love that you mentioned, “wet-leased”; I know what that is. 😊 Moving on to Perth. Nice haircut and beard trim, Jeb!!! I liked the Fokker 100 shot; their tail speed brake is unique. Your movie choice was “Get Hard”. Any good? Your Gin and tonic with olives and nuts was mouth watering; followed up with red wine. One of my favorites! Jeb, this was an outstanding trip report!!! Keep it up, and I hope to see you in the sky, someday!! I would say more, but I’ll send that in a private message.
I haven't flown a domestic Australian flight since the early 90s and the only two choices were Ansett and Australian...Qantas at that time flew fewer domestic flights. I flew from Melbourne to Sydney on an Australian Airlines 767, not too long before the airline's acquisition by Qantas. I thought it was so cool to fly a wide body plane on such a short flight. Love this video, Jeb!
That's so funny that you didn't like Vegemite. I bought that and Marmite at World Market here once and they were both yucky. I like curry so I would be more impressed with the food on Virgin as a matter of personal bias. Virgin Australia does appear to be a better choice with the more modern cabin too. Also, the haircut looks great.
What’s nice about OneWorld Emerald status is that it gets you into all of the alliance airlines’ first class lounge. Today I flew the Boeing 747-400 LCF variant to Italy (there are only four in the world). And tomorrow I ride Swiss Air; good times!
I have done the Virgin Sydney-Perth-Sydney and I pretty much agree with you the wine is great. the flight time is about one hour shorter flying east due to wind. I had been in a port side window and an starboard aisle and I think the aisle felt slightly larger. You are right if you are a couple book the two aisle seats on the same row. But if you have a small partner go economy as you can be closer and snuggle up.
Glad to see you back in action Jeb! It’s been a while so I hope you’ve been having a good time in Australia. Love the video and hope to fly virgin some day.
You say Qantas has probably your favourite of all business class seats (something you also said on your Perth - London video).....then give Virgin the same score, although no blanket and a crappy pillow. I'm sure that makes sense to somebody, namely you, but I'm scratching my head at that one. p.s. I'm an Aussie who never eats Vegemite.
Maaaate, you don't have Vegemite (or Marmite) on it's own. Smear it on hot buttered toast or fresh white buttered bread. Delicious, cobber. I've been eating both for 65 years and really enjoy introducing my American friends to it. They always want to put too much on at first and their reactions are the same as yours! I'm happy to report though that one of them is now addicted so I bring him a jar of the stuff when I travel to the US. Anyway, good comparison. Enjoyed the scoring, I can't separate Qantas or Virgin on service or quality or lounge so in the end it comes down to price and schedule. P.S. Did you wave to Dennis Bunnick when you flew over Adelaide?
People say that qantas has the best business class in austrlaia👍 but i think that both airlines have great business class 👍.Keep up the awesome vids Jeb brooks❤️
Great video. I'll be flying QANTAS business class from Perth to Brisbane next year when I visit my relatives who live in Brisbane. We are doing the Indian Pacific railway from Sydney to Perth. So looking forward to that. Also, I love the food that Neil Perry conjures up as I've eaten at some of his restaurants o my two previous trips to Australia. And I hate vegemite......
Another Great video as always, and thanks for hearting my comment in the previous video. Also, are you going to review the flight that takes you back to the US? I'm guessing that you'd be flying Delta.
Jeb mate come on, even us Aussies don't eat vegemite straight off a fork....we have the same reaction you did haha It needs to be on toast with cheese or a sandwich. Oh we don't slather it on, it's just a light spread. You should have asked a local for assistance lol. Good video mate
Hi Jeb, I’m a new subscriber to your channel. Great content and commentary. I’m traveling the world vicariously through you. Fun idea? A give away drawing of the amenity kits you receive on your trips. Safe travels. Always look forward to your videos.
Jeb, the A330 product isn't bad but I admit, it's better than Qantas and as a personal preference, I like the Virgin lounge more at Sydney domestic. By comparison, you must try the Virgin Australia B77 business class on the LAX to SYD route. It is amazing. You get bedding, pyjamas, a stand up/sit down bar and the most exceptional service compared to QANTAS. Safe travels.
Wow, I only just realised very briefly at the beginning of your video, you were recording in Wollongong. That's basically where we live. Safe travels and I hope you get to try the 777 on VA
Next time you are down under can you please get Paul or Dennis to teach you how to eat vegemite? You could also look up Hugh Jackman's guide on youtube :) Great review though. In my view, Qantas wins because they have a better FF program and a decent entertainment system.
Qantas offers a domestic business class lounge in both Sydney Melbourne and Perth. when virgin doesn’t I think that’s how qantas edges out virgin in my opinion. Plus earning status on qantas tends to be more valuable then virgin
Liam Oldy Virgin has business lounges in all of those airports. You could always earn your Virgin flights to Singapore’s KrisFlyer for quite valuable status.
OMG, when you put that much vegemite on your fork I was screaming "nooooooooooo, don't do it" 😂 🤣. You could have just dipped your fork in and that tiny bit would have been enough, it's not meant to be eaten in big chunks. I prefer Qantas myself. Nice video
another great video mate but can I make two totally random comments- 1- cant believe you didn't watch "Chicago in Chicago" in the Quaint Arse flight and 2- In the UK Marmite (Vegemite) ad slogan is "love it or hate it" guess we know which field your in!!!!!! Virgin wins for me just for the feeling of privacy in the seat layout
Hi Jeb, another wonderful video and as I am from Australia it was an entertaining one to watch. I was just wondering if you have ever flown Air Canada's economy class product from Sydney (SYD) to Vancouver (YVR). One of my friends is travelling to Canada in January and asked me to check out this product, and I was hoping you could help with some info. Thanks for the great video, Caden
Fantastic comparison! Also 9:18 I love that Fokker 100! I’d love to see a review on that see what it’s like in that aircraft. Besides entertainment, I think Virgin Australia has the best business class.
I think Australia flies the most F100 in the world. Most flying workers in to remote mines. Only other country that has a lot is Iran, and only because they cant get much else.
I flew from Perth to Darwin with a stop at Broome in an F100. Very nice plane, the rear mounted engines leave all the noise behind. If you want to fly on one in Australia you need to do it soon because these ageing aircraft will soon be replaced with new planes.
These were inherited from another smaller airline based in Western Australia, Skywest. Was once owned by Ansett and after their demise managed to survive in their own right. I think it’s owned under Virgin Australia Regional Airlines now. They recently also had rebranded the Fokker 50 turboprops which were retired in the last few years. There was or is still an A320 Skywest had which was rebranded in VA colours, VA only flies B737 in this class of aircraft so it’s nice to see an A320 in their colours. I’d say the fokkers are kept as the availability of B717’s are scarce (Qantas Link has quite a few). Also it ties in well with another ex Ansett owned Queensland based regional airline Flightwest was rebranded and became Alliance. Turned into a charter airline mainly for Mining fly in, fly out services. Virgin now contracts them branded in their own right for certain routes. So I guess there is some sort of communality there. Be interesting to see what will replace these as they serve the outer regional markets well in Australia.
I saw an interesting video on airline classes and how they were brought about. Interestingly enough, business class s the most profitable section of a plane. In fact there might be a trend to get rid of first class as the upgrade is not that significant and costs the airlines a whole lot more. They would just add more business class as the price per square footage generates twice as much as regular class. Apparently only about 6 major airlines has first class.
Great video. Unfortunately, you fell for the rookie mistake with vegemite. A little goes a LONG WAY, you're not supposed to take a chunk of it by itself. It's a powerful spread so a little on toast or just bread is the way to go, it's too strong to just chug by itself.

* Perth has the most amazing Sushi offerings in the country
* Kingsford Smith airport makes LAX look like paradise
* VA has a total of 3 earning charts and 2 redemption charts - Qantas has a multitude in each category.
1. Vegemite is better on toast with a good amount of butter
I really enjoy how comprehensive these airline comparison videos are. Keep doing what your doing for the aviation community.
Hey Jed you should do a aer Lingus business class
they have a wonderful product with outstanding Irish hospitality.
Looking forward to seeing your review in 2019
Yes,gr8 idea
I’ll bet you go through the passport with the extra pages really quick😂 love the videos, since I also travel a good amount as well.
Virgin Australia for the win! Awesome video Jeb 👏🏽
Great choice of music during the video, nice work Jeb!
You’ve earned a new subscriber, ME!
It’s good that an airline has made you happy with the head set even though you like your set.
As an Australian, It made me laugh when you tried the Vegemite lmao
Your quality has been so good these last flights
Blindspotting is an excellent film. Another solid comparison video, Jeb.
It's great that you two met! Great video too! Greetings from Sacramento!
He just needs to man uo
And eat the Vegemite
So... another dodgy “Aussie”.
@@stephenvincent4706 no dickhead I think we would know as an Aussie we would know witch airline is better in Australia
Cooper Leonard Another member of the educated elite I see.
Hope to see you in ATL some time soon! Great video again, like normal!!! Keep it Up, great videos love them:)
Man I wish I could’ve seen these before pandemic, pandemic really degraded big fleet aircraft :(
Another Great video as always, and thanks for hearting my comment in the previous video. Also, are you going to review the flight that takes you back to the US? I'm guessing that you'd be flying Delta.
Another great video. Did I notice a new watch on your Virgin Australia fight ?
@@GreenerGrass Very nice watch !
Jeb your the man !! The best aviation vloger out their to date. Thank you .. Happy Holidays.. :)
I Always fly Virgin Australia, I just love their business class.
This is just what I was looking for, thank you!
Great vlog Jeb !
Another vlog I found !
Paul yay !
Jeb trying Vegemite is funny
Another amazing video by Jeb Brooks!
He thought he would be okay just having Vegemite by itself, we've all been there mate, great video!
Not sure how you got a phone/camera to the top of the Harbour Bridge.....thought it was not allowed in case you drop it? Great vid.
As one who has flown a lot a few years back for my employment, I'll take Virgin over Qantas any time
Thanks for the video. I took Virgin from LAX to SYD. Came back on Delta. The Virgin had a better hard product (open bar), food and service.
OMG, when you put that much vegemite on your fork I was screaming "nooooooooooo, don't do it" 😂 🤣. You could have just dipped your fork in and that tiny bit would have been enough, it's not meant to be eaten in big chunks. I prefer Qantas myself. Nice video
I’m pretty sure I saw my house when you took off from Sydney! Being a avgeek it’s great living only 1.5km from the end on the Sydney airport runway!
Super video like always Mr. Brooks! Keep up the great work. Love the videos.
another great video mate but can I make two totally random comments- 1- cant believe you didn't watch "Chicago in Chicago" in the Quaint Arse flight and 2- In the UK Marmite (Vegemite) ad slogan is "love it or hate it" guess we know which field your in!!!!!! Virgin wins for me just for the feeling of privacy in the seat layout
absolutely love the vid keep doing what u doing man
I flew Business on Virgin Australia 777 from Melbourne to Los Angeles. It was probably the best flight of my life.
Classic by @paulstewart "Like United Business Class, only decent" Hilarious!!
Thanks for the great video, Caden
when are you going to try the UA 787-10 transcon
@@GreenerGrass maybe UAs transcon will be better
Oh my goodness, I work at Bridgeclimb as a climb leader!! I would've loved to have taken you up :(
Great video Jeb, but as an Aussie I have to say you were crazy trying the vegemite like that, you need a thin smear on toast with plenty of butter.
You shouldve taken Bunnik with you on the ThrowDownUnder. Love to see a head to head Vlog-Off... wobbly tray tables vs inferior head phones.
Good onya Jeb, top video mate! G'day from Straya!
Jeb, from a fellow North Carolinian, get a shave! :-)
Good TR. Keep it up. You gonna fly AA-LHR one of these days?
And I meant AA RDU-LHR.
Enjoy watching your review mate!...Never tried Virgin Australia but flew with Qantas quite a number of times. Have you tried Garuda Indonesia Brooks?.
Fantastic comparison!
Also 9:18 I love that Fokker 100! I’d love to see a review on that see what it’s like in that aircraft.
Besides entertainment, I think Virgin Australia has the best business class.
Try this. 😉✈️ ua-cam.com/video/wsDQcr899x4/v-deo.html
Thanks for the replies everyone!
Awesome video Jeb, I've been hanging for it!
When there is nothing good to say is better not to say anything other than Mr. Stewart is a King in the Aviation Vlogging
Oh man, the look on your face when you tried the Vegemite! Thanks for a good belly laugh.
Thanks for the information regarding the Virgin Australia loyalty program.
