    About United (from Wikipedia):
United Airlines, Inc. is a major American airline headquartered at the Willis Tower in Chicago, Illinois. United operates a large domestic and international route network spanning cities large and small across the United States and all six inhabited continents. Measured by fleet size and the number of routes, it became the third-largest airline in the world after its merger with Continental Airlines in 2010.
United has eight hubs, with Chicago-O'Hare being its largest in terms of passengers carried and the number of departures. It is a founding member of the Star Alliance, the world's largest airline alliance with a total of 28 member airlines. Regional service is operated by independent carriers under the brand name United Express.
    About Boeing 777 (from Wikipedia):
The Boeing 777, commonly referred to as the Triple Seven, is an American long-range wide-body airliner developed and manufactured by Boeing Commercial Airplanes. The 777 is the world's largest twinjet and the most built wide-body airliner. The jetliner was designed to bridge the gap between Boeing's other wide body airplanes, the twin-engined 767 and quad-engined 747, and to replace aging DC-10s and L-1011 trijets. Developed in consultation with eight major airlines, the 777 program was launched in October 1990, with an order from United Airlines. The prototype was rolled out in April 1994, and first flew in June. The 777 entered service with the launch operator United Airlines in June 1995. Longer-range variants were launched in 2000, and first delivered in 2004.
The Triple Seven can accommodate a ten-abreast seating layout and has a typical 3-class capacity of 301 to 368 passengers, with a range of 5,240 to 8,555 nautical miles [nmi] (9,700 to 15,840 km; 6,030 to 9,840 mi). The jetliner is recognizable for its large-diameter turbofan engines, six wheels on each main landing gear, fully circular fuselage cross-section, and a blade-shaped tail cone. The 777 became the first Boeing airliner to use fly-by-wire controls and to apply a composite structure in the tailplanes.

Finally an accurate review of this cabin. I fly it 10-12 times a year and you couldn’t have been more spot on about everything in this video.
Every time people find out I mainly fly united they think I get harassed on board and have a horrible experience, but that seat is some of the best sleep I’ve ever had while travelling, and as long as you respect the crew you’ll always get treated well.
Even more so, with the awful food, when they forgot to pack my plant based meal they immediately offered a $400 united voucher, so now I’m always hoping they forget the pre-selected meal haha.

I recently flew the same route in early September. I had a very good experience and the amenity kit was a fanny pack, which I find more useable than previous containers. I was also given a pair of slippers. However the Polaris lounge was so crowded that I left as soon as I saw no seats, and the buffet was struggling to keep up. I ended up in the club lounge which was so much better. Once I arrived into Heathrow, I tried out the arrivals lounge. What a great idea! I had a shower, was offered to iron my clothes ( I passed ) and then had a nice sit down breakfast while I waited for rush hour to end and headed onward to the city.

One thing I miss about United (and formerly Continental) business class experience was how they used to serve food. They used to bring carts for each course (except main) and serve your salad/dessert from that. I remember getting so excited for the sundae cart to make my ice cream. Before COVID they had a cake tray as well. They stopped all that with COVID and never brought it back :(

Wait Dan. Regarding EWR. I'm retired, but for many years I was based there (pilot so yeah I'm legacy Continental). Newark Airport can operate smoothly at the levels scheduled EXCEPT for 3 main complications: Weather, ATC and the proximity of LGA and JFK. The last two are related because it is VERY complex airspace in that region. Adding that the FAA is terribly understaffed? ATC can slow things down based on experience levels.
It is beyond the scope of the UA-cam comments to thoroughly explain this, and it is easier for pilots to grasp. Not throwing shade, but youre an AvGeek and shoukd understand.

We flew United to Croatia from Houston in 2019, right before Covid, and we splurged on Polaris seats. It was a great experience. Lounge was amazing, the shower facilities luxurious, and the onboard service, seat and meals outstanding. I'd heard United was downgrading some aspects of Polaris a year or two ago. Not sure what happened there, but your trip looks pretty comparable to ours, Dan. United really is the best non-Asian or ME airline out there.

We flew Polaris business last week, it was our first ever time flying business class. I wish i had known that the armrest folded down and that i could get a mattress pad. I too loved the entertainment selection but chose movies. I have to disagree with you about the oatmeal. I thought it was amazing maybe the best oatmeal I've ever had, but i love fruit in my oatmeal. Service was definitely inconsistent. On our way out the flight attendants were friendly, relaxed, and professional, on the way back they were tense, nervous, and flustered. Their obvious discomfort made me nervous.

Dan, I've really enjoyed your videos the past few months and thanks for giving UAL a little love. You are right, United has gotten a lot better and is better than most airlines around the world. Polaris seats are generally great, food average at best, but the real make or break part of the experience is the cabin crew. A good cabin crew that is enthusiastic, helpful (like finding you that amenity kit....wish I had seen this two weeks earlier), and honest really is the difference between an average trip and a memorable one. I also find that everything is just a little bit better on the 787 (maybe because of the lighting?), particularly the 787-10. I'm not sure if this is a rule or just my dumb luck. As for the food, on a recent -10 flight from Frankfurt I had a really good arrival meal (I skipped the departure meal) and when I told the FA that she was correct when she said I made a good choice when I ordered, we ended up having a discussion about the food onboard UAL. The long and short of it, the FA mentioned that the cabin crews were generally embarrassed to serve some of the offerings of late and to complete those surveys if you get them because UAL listens. Apparently the recent improvements to meal service was in direct response to complaints. Now I don't have too much hope that Polaris 2.0 will be an improved product other than the fully enclosed pod, but hopefully they continue the upswing in the food and beverage department. I'll also say that along the lines of a good cabin crew, I recently had a fairly disappointing trip on a Singapore A350 as they seemed to be mostly robotic in their duties. Completely opposite were two extraordinary flights on a Lufthansa 747-400 and -8 Upper Decks because the FAs, purser, and one Captain were truly amazing.
BTW, the hate towards Mr. Kirby for taking a private jet is really shorted sighted by the media. During a summer that had a lot of cancellations and ATC disruptions, it isn't the worst thing to happen if he absolutely had to be to a meeting and at the same time freed up a seat to those that may have been stuck for a day or two. When you make the kind of money that Fortune 500 CEOs make, their productivity compared to cost of using a private jet is very tangible. It's reported that Mr. Kirby makes over $16M per year. For a 50 hour work week 50 weeks of the year, he makes $6,400 an hour. So every hour of productivity lost is more or equal to what a private jet costs per hour. My two cents anyway.
    Blue Skies

Great video. I am very familiar with this product and will be on the same flight you took in 10 days. I agree with everything you said about UAL's Polaris class. It's a super comfortable ride to wherever I'm heading with abysmal food. I'm 1K so am allowed to pre-board, but do think UAL should allow Polaris/Business/First passengers to board first like other airlines do; there always seems to be a whole lot of folks with Group 1 assignments.

I feel the same about United vs European carriers, 5-10 years ago I always picked Euro carriers over US carriers. But now many Euro biz seats are inferior to Polaris and their service has gone downhill overall. The only thing some of them have going for them is the food. United's crew is hit or miss and the food is usually crap but I'd rather get the better seat when it comes down to it. If United would up their game with the food they could be more competitive.

United is primarily my first choice of airlines due to their main hub location but I agree totally about the food. I also eat at the lounge and pick up snacks there before the flight. I get a bit bummed out when I fly other airlines and I have to hunt down information on flights.

I have flown 4 lengthy trans Pacific & trans Atlantic trips with United in economy & I was very happy with them. I know many will disagree with me but I am only expecting safe travel that is not too uncomfortable - I tell myself it's usually less than 12 hours or so & I'm soon going to arrive at my destination. I don't sleep so well but do rest (watch a lot of movies!) & I bring plenty of snacks I enjoy. When I see the state of the business class cabin on exiting the plane I think it's left messier than economy & wonder if the cabin crew notice this. Also I feel glad I didn't spend many thousands on the flight!

Dan, thanks for all of your videos. I really enjoy watching them.
I really like United’s Polaris seat because of the comfort and privacy(amazing how much without a door). The ability to lower the armrest widens your space only a little but it makes such a difference when sleeping on a long flight. Last year we flew on some Star Alliance carriers in business and the Polaris seat is better than Air Canada, Lufthansa, and Swiss Air.
This year we flew on ANA, and their seats on the A380 and 787 have the least amount of privacy in my opinion. It feels like you can be seen by everyone.

Just flew United Polaris from SFO to MEL, a 15 hour flight and I thought your review was spot on except for the Polaris lounge. Our flight left just before midnight and after connecting from Las Vegas we got to the lounge just before 10.00pm. The lounge shut at 10.30pm and when we got there the restaurant was closed, the buffet was messy and full of empty plates and the bar staff were quite aloof and dismissive. We were kicked out at 10.30pm to wander the terminal for an hour before our boarding. I get that they publish that the lounge shuts at that time but if you have scheduled flights leaving late at night, surely you should stay open to service those passengers as well as you would do at midday? I was looking forward to the restaurant and also taking a shower before my flight as it had already been a long day before we got to SFO. Sadly I got neither and instead got a one star lounge experience instead.

UA Polaris middle seats have the option to sit close together or put a partition up in every other middle row. It's only if you both want window seats that it is an issue. But since it is business class (not leisure) they cater a lot to business people who don't want to be near others.

I got upgraded to business class on a United flight from Brussels to Chicago. It was fantastic, because I was recovering from Covid and running on about 4 hours of sleep (not to mention exhausted and frustrated from being forced to stand in lines at the airport for nearly two hours even though I had just flown in from Germany). I didn't even know I was in business and walked the wrong direction when I boarded. Needless to say, business class was a treat. The only time I have ever gotten solid sleep on a plane. And the flight attendants were so nice to an obviously dazed and confused economy class grad student. I was happy with my meal even though I ended up with my second choice. For those that cant sleep in a warm cabin, United business on long hauls is the way to go. Doesnt matter how much nicer other carriers' products are if you land exhausted from lack of sleep. The personal air vents are also so rare in business with other carriers these days. Ive flown plenty of foreign carriers in business/first and its a pain asking them to lower the cabin temp all the time... sometimes to no avail.

I flew United Polaris in both a 787-10 (Athens - Newark in SEAT 8A!) and a 777-222 (EWR - LAX) last week.
The amenities pack is now a Therabody gray fanny pack (international) and a sad little blue Asutra pouch for domestic.
My chief complaint is the FOOD. It was awful. I did sleep okay but the interactive map wasn’t working on either flight.
Last year I flew Turkish Airlines LAX - Istanbul and the service was fabulous, I highly recommend.

My family has been flying United in business class since the DC-8. Having been on it on medium to long haul flights many times I have to say it is by far the absolute best experiences I have had on any US carrier. I still remember when I was 6, I was in a business class seat by myself on a 767, and the crew treated me like I was their own son. I felt like royalty (as it was my first time in a lie-flat seat). Great job, United!

      @Joe-yz3uf 7 місяців тому +1

@@jerryuma United retrofitted the same seating onto a large majority of its widebody aircraft a few years ago and the only real difference 767 and 777 seats are that the 767 has less seats in a row. The United 777-200/200ER fleet also really isn't that much newer compared to the 767-300ER fleet and 767-400ERs are bit newer then a good number of United's 777 fleet. I mean can you name a United 767 that was proven to be less safe then a 777-200 that United received only a couple of years later?

    Hi Dan from NYC!
I watch all your videos, but this is the only one I felt inclined to comment on. Being a half American half British girl living in New York City I am very familiar with international and US carriers. This video showcase, a bit too much “American Airlines” or ‘American airports”. I live in downtown New York City, and always travel through JFK but a recent flight to Los Angeles had me leaving from Newark and boy was I surprised! JetBlue was my flight, and the new renovated terminal was all high-tech, easy to access, TSA was smooth sailing. It will now be my go to for any departure, both international and international.
Have you been to CDG recently or other European airports? Those are dumpy. Newark airport is certainly not anywhere near that. Have you flown on the JetBlue flight New York to London in mint? That is a flight you should take and you will be blown away by the food/service. I will NEVER FLY UNITED AIRLINES, after a bad experience with their flight attendants, and no TVs on a flight, I am amazed that people are so committed to that airline & being employee owned, they relax on their standards. I can’t believe the meal that was brought out to you, typical for United. Please don’t bash too much on US carriers and airports next time, although I do agree with United comments.

the 2 airlines I tend to take the most are Delta and United. Delta due to my dad working for them and them having a hub where I live and their just beauties but United certainly is great too. We've never had any issue with them either so idk why some do either. They've always been great to my family and I hell my dad's college best friend works for United. We didn't really fly united much at first or at least not as much as delta but once the merger with continental happened in 2010, we started to fly them more often due to their increased brand and increased travel options with more destinations and improved modern technology that got provided for customers as a result. We didn't really fly United much before the 2010 merger w continental like said above mainly cause it wasn't as available and it wasn't as reliable when going to certain destinations.

The review here is spot on - The app/tech is amazing.... Bedding is great, IFE is amazing, but man...... the catering has to get better. It's one of the main reasons I would only splurge on a Polaris seat if it's more than 9 hours and I need sleep. Otherwise, I go with Premium Economy just because you don't get good food in Polaris. I flew from Sao Paulo, and the breakfast crepes looked like a pile of vomit.....

I used to be 1K in United for a decade. I used also to love United, but since they butchered Mileage plus, I opened my eyes. To attain a Status with them is significantly more difficult than with other airlines from Europe, Middle East or Asia. Flying United is mor expensive in general than other airlines and their product is well behind of European, Middle Eastern or Asian Airlines, so, yes, I fly other airlines and the balance overwhelmly positive.

Also have to consider that UA has a very consistent INTL widebody experience now. United has completed its Polaris Retrofit program, so now every widebody has Polaris. United also has a Polaris Lounge opened in every hub with the exception of DEN. Then you compare that with DL, which has no Business Class lounges, and a very inconsistent INTL widebody experience. (A330's, A339's, 767's all have different business cabins). DL does have much better catering, can't argue with that. United's FA's have also gotten much better these days too.

I was recently on flight this summer with UA to Dubai, before the flight I've noticed UA flight to Dubai was leaving late consistently or canceled. I witnessed the UA meltdown from IAH to EWR, and I was lucky enough get a hotel and meal vouchers from UA in timely fashion due to my flight plans being delayed due to UA. I had to spend several hours in the Polaris lounge, which was pretty busy due everyone being a victim of UA mess. People were sleeping in the terminal on cots, it looked like a evacuation center. UA also lost my bag for 3 weeks. What I've learned is that the staff in DXB is EK staff that operates for UA on the ground handling side. Downside is that the EK staff isn't all trained for UA ops or don't have full view of the UA system. UA 777 Polaris is much more comfortable as a seat compared to Q suites in my opinion. UA LHR base flight attendants do the EWR, IAH, and IAD I think, rest is operated by UA American base crew. Apparently UA is revamping their Polaris hard and soft product.
