I recently visited Baron Estates in Leesburg Fl where Randy died. I sat at the gate and listened to Revelation Mother Earth and Diary of a Madman while looking at the rebuilt Manson across the airstrip where the crash happened.. I cried and cried. I really appreciate your in-depth video of *RR* as a drummer, I remember in the 80's my friend's mentioning Randy Rhoads, but I was focused on my drumming at the time so it kind of went over my head. but now that I've picked up guitar 🎸 I totally know what my friends were talking about when mentioning Randy. Your tutorial was absolutely fantastic 💯 Randy would be proud of how you represented his memory. Diary of a Madman is the epitome of Randy Rhoads style and classical approach, and yes his technique on that particular *sONg* is eerie, and haunting, and spooky, and creepy, masterpiece, the lead guitar solo Randy does is really creepy, *chilling* genius I never heard anything like it before at the time and even now he definitely set a standard and raise the bar. Very rare and unique style of playing and that's not even mentioning his ability to play rhythm as well, Randy was exalt at it his tone and thickness top notch. 👍🏼 Thank you very much for sharing I could go on and on about Randy Rhoads, but I will rapit up. Thank You For A Change of Perspective .. Revolition Mother Earth..A Gorgeous Song This Was BREATHTAKING and Hypnotic ... As was Diary Of a Madman ... Life Changing
I think that he was still alive, he defenitely would have done a G3 tour with Satch and Vai. When he was in Quiet Riot, they played a venue with Van Halen. Too bad Eddie's attitude and ego ruined the chance for him and Randy to jam, and possibly record together. That would have been priceless.
His guitar sounds so diabolical! Loved his stuff, so different from other music growing up. What he had going in my mind was voice, I’d hear his playing and know it was Randy playing.
I like the Subtle? changing of the guard over th trooper cup. Most want the solos but you,ve got to hang them onto some cool chords indeed, and not mentioned enough!
Just stumbled onto your channel. Awesome. Randy is by far my favorite. I love how it runs so deep with his fans. Guys like me can never get enough of how you so intelligently break down our favorite players. And you just get it. Please do more Randy. Anything. Thank you!
I agree with you and I picked a guitar up in 89. Never had a lesson, but Randy's music made me keep at it. Now with UA-cam, I can take "lesson's" and my fingers and ear's are seasoned. That is a badass riff. I love how he makes use of the same notes, that sound different, cause of the sequence. I'm Not a music reader, but you know what I mean. Subbed.
I can discuss or listen to someone discuss how brilliant Randy was all day. I really enjoy how you break the song down and talk about his chord choices and voicing. Glad to have found your channel.

I think you are right about what Randy would of end up being later in life, he's definetely my favorite guitar player ever. You are a guitar beast as well amazing! Keep it up!
Randy Rhoads is one of my favourite guitarists and as such I've learned around 75-80% of his material. I appreciate hearing the theory behind his genius. Diary of a Madman has such cool time signatures and chord structures!
I agree with your assessment on where Randy would probably be today. He loved to teach and would have definitely pursued record producing. One could only imagine what he would have accomplished based upon what he did in such a short period of time with Ozzy.
Awesome lesson! Randy was such a killer player. I'd be glad to watch more of this. Your a great player also your technique is flawless. I could tell right away you've practiced your chops!
Thank you so much! Yeah, I have to admit - I found the guitar around age 12 and I haven't really put it down since that time. I've been obsessed and hooked for a long time! : ) Thanks again and heck yeah - Randy ROCKS!
I watched an interview last night of Randy's brother saying that there was talk about Randy leaving Ozzy to study classical music and he says that was not true. I found this interesting because his Mom said Randy had told her that and if you think about it, Randy was the type person who didn't like conflict and probably didn't want to make waves. He told Ozzy his plans for the future and Randy was done with the rock scene and Ozzys drinking and doing drugs, etc. Randy was educated and driven to learn classical guitar. Randy would have become a great classical guitar player. He was good but if you've ever heard an actual classical guitar player play, you could tell that Randy was unpolished and raw but the perfect amount of talent and drive to become great.
Crimson.......Randy's brother (Kelle) is full of shit, and always has been. He had a lot of jealousy and envied his younger brother. I have an interview with Delores stating she helped Randy apply to UCLA weeks before his death to enroll and work for his degree in music......UCLA was her Alma-matter back in the 40's. I really wish Kelle would leave all interviews and subject material regarding Randy to his sister Kathy. She exudes classiness and clarity unlike her buffoon brother Kelle.
Revaluation mother earth makes me tear up, it's so unbelievably beautiful sounding, I love classical mixed in with metal or rock it makes it so intriguing.
Great choices, David! “Revelation” is so melodic and sort of tragic. And YES! His chords for “Diary,” just haunting and amazing! Thank you for looking at Randy!

@@LateNightLessons Funny Revelation was the first Randy song I ever heard. My friend who was a monster drummer at 15 was like you gotta hear this. I like " Whoa Whoa what the hell, holy sh-t! Then that mind boggling solo at the end. LOL. After that it was Mr. Crowley and Crazy Train and he was instantly my musical idol and still is after 38 years. Ive heard them all and no one brought a complete and total virtuoso package and flexibility like he did IMO.
Hi David, Very good appraisal of Randy Rhoads´style. As you say, it scratches the surface of what he did.A tragedy that we never heard his full potential. Regarding his classical guitar studies influencing Diary of a Madman, as well as Brouwer in the beginning, I’m pretty sure Randy quotes Emilio Pujol´s El Abejorro study in the middle section (“a sickened mind and spirt” etc..). The ethos behind your teaching in Chordplay which is to not just regurgitate songs verbatim , and instead to try creating something new by standing on the shoulders of the greats, is no better exemplified by this track. A rock masterpiece. Many thanks for the videos,David. Supported you on Patreon.
I’m thoroughly enjoying this chords of series. It’s a condensed study in phrasing for me. I’ve used many of these chord voicings over the years but not in the manner that the artist du jour has and it’s fascinating to find ways to incorporate these in my own playing. Thank you sir. As to suggestions, how about The Chords of Neal Schon (Steve Perry Era). His phrasing, while very blues based, is also unique. He’s one of my favorite melodic players.
Haven't looked yet but how about Rik Emmett? He was the guitarist that made me want to play. I purchased the "Rock n Roll Machine" vinyl lp and I was hooked. I did subscribe to your channel.
Trivia: S.A.T.O. = Sailing Across The Ocean For myself, the song, “Diary Of A Madman” has it all as far as Randy’s finest work. And his solo in it is so incredibly haunting and melodic in unexpected ways. From the Blizzard album to “Diary,” he made incredible progress in his playing - its astonishing. I think I read he was going to record one more album with Ozzy before departing. I have wondered what he would’ve done next for the fact of his incredibly fast progress between albums - just a thoroughly exciting musician and composer! Seeing him in Alpine Valley was like watching a magician who happened to do all his wizardry with a guitar. He just left you stunned! It seems either you love Randy Rhoads or you just haven’t discovered him yet. Once he arrived on the scene, I barely paid attention to Van Halen. Randy’s loss for many left us with an open wound that never heals.
I love Randy's classical influences with metal guitar. He is one of my favorites. That last example from Diary of a madman was great. I'm going to fiddle around with those chords on guitar now. Thank you.
David, I have become a huge fan of yours. Randy did seem like a musical sorcerer of sorts. I never got see him live but a few friends of mine did. They said they mesmerized by his skills and colorful chord palette. Great job as always.
just discovered your channel bro and I gotta say being based in alot of 90s music with some clsssic rock on the side and progressing into more metal. you are an amazing guitarist and I've learned a lot of my favorite 80s licks from you and look forward to figuring more out watching your channel
Great lesson! I'm a huge RR fan, one of my biggest influences. Terrific explanation, theory and application. Great tone and playing too!🤘🎸🎶 Loved that you included the Brouwer influence on DOAM, I studied classical in school and loved showing my instructors that!
Excellent breakdown as always David. I'm more of a blues/early classic rock player but those riffs just seem fun to play. I will dig much further into Randy's playing, thanks for starting me off!
Thanks for the Leo Brouwer revelation on Diary. That was huge for me. Loved Randy, He's why I started guitar 38 years ago. It's actually comforting knowing he borrowed in fascination as we all do and the mark of continued progress. Love your channel and what you do. I once heard amateurs copy and professionals steal lol. Jimmy Herring is my benchmark now but Randy had vision like no other.
I love this video because it explores some of the best not so popular Randy pieces. Steal away is one of my favorites since I’m a kid. SATO as well. Randy was just such an amazing person and musician. I think about it at least once a week if he were still around what he be doing and what would he have become
Excellent choice of licks. For me, some (lots) of his techniques were a mystery wrapped in a riddle. No bone movies tonight, I need to practice. Much thanks.
..i was 15, depressed because ozzy and sabbath were broke. my buddies told me about ozzys new music, but i was so upset, not dealing with it, and got resentful i guess. i just couldnt understand why such an entity like sabbath, could separate. ....i snubbed the 1st album, but one night in a small town where i went to a party (i was 17 by that time), i heard the whole diary of a madman album, and there it was!!! the sound was so special, the riffs, the solos, the songs, and yes...ozzy!!!!..that is what turned me to studying guitar for 10hrs a day, and trying to go for 16hrs haha!!! anyways, there was just something so special about his tone...it was the real deal, he was what i needed. so was van halen, but for me, randy just was exactly what i needed as a musician....he still is. he isnt passed, he put his sole right on vinyl....anyways, who the heck am i....just some guy greatful guy who will never hear randy as gone....cheers, and thx for a great video man, be good.
Great lesson! The songs you’ve chosen to analyze are my favorite compositions from Randy, and now I know why! They rose above the ordinary with their unusual chords and gave his melodies their classical, baroque feel! But he threw in bluesy elements as well to round out the sound to create his unique style.

Randy would be proud of how you represented his memory.
Thank you very much for sharing
I could go on and on about Randy Rhoads, but I will rapit up.
Sincerely:
*RANDY JUDAH TORREZ*

Randy Rhoads was a piece of Heaven taken back too soon. RIP Randy
and I love how we both have the same wallpaper !! Long Live Rock N' Roll !!
Randy was close to a human metronome, he had excellent timing and his rhythm playing showed that.
Thank You For A Change of Perspective ..
Revolition Mother Earth..A Gorgeous Song
This Was BREATHTAKING and Hypnotic ...
As was Diary Of a Madman ...
Life Changing
“Bring your powdered wigs.” Love it! Thanks for breaking some of Randy’s style down for us. 🤘🏻
When I first heard Over The Mountain, I said, you gotta be kidding me! What the he'll? Incredible!
Glad to have found your channel.
,,,,,,thx for this,,,,I saw R.R.,ozzy in 1981,,,boulder CO. D.O.A.M concert..😯..their set truck broke down on the way .and they played with opening bands stage,,,😐..mr,Rhodes played flawless regardless..my best musical night to date,,proud to tell the story!!!...had the 8-track in my car and cranked it the rest of that year.!..pat.
RR for Ever! You play so well!!! You feel it! Congrats!!!!
Thanks so much and Randy was a total guitar wizard!
: )
Yes I enjoyed you breaking this down , really could see truely what Randy left us in his short time we had with him.
I think you are right about what Randy would of end up being later in life, he's definetely my favorite guitar player ever. You are a guitar beast as well amazing! Keep it up!
Loved DOAMM from jump street.. SATO to this on of my go to riffs.. also Rock Bottom oddly enough for the MS influence... thanks for the content
Thank you and I agree - those two albums with Randy (along with Tribute) are as solid and awesome as you can get.
: )
Randy Rhoads is one of my favourite guitarists and as such I've learned around 75-80% of his material. I appreciate hearing the theory behind his genius. Diary of a Madman has such cool time signatures and chord structures!
Revelations the most underrated song and the best showcase of Randy’s thought and talent processes
Believer is the riff I love.Opens up with something I have never heard anyone do.
: )
Thanks again and heck yeah - Randy ROCKS!
That's a beautiful guitar Sir!
well done with this lesson. you have a nice way of explaining the chord sequences and their relationships to each to each other.
Great lesson thank you. Diary of a Madman struck me in the mid 80’s leaving me feeling lost but in a good way. It’s my favorite of Randy’s work.
Great choices, David! “Revelation” is so melodic and sort of tragic. And YES! His chords for “Diary,” just haunting and amazing! Thank you for looking at Randy!
Thank you brother! Randy Rhodes is everything to me! He's the best. And you agree 👍 thanks!
Thank you very much! The channel is one of the best of all!
I've watched several of your videos on the titles alone, not realizing it was you again. This one really hit home. I agree that your lessons are so casual yet full of information and easy to understand. Thank you🤘. I'm now subscribed
Mother Earth lick was ahead of it's time and so underrated technically
That's such a great song and hardly anyone knows about it!
: )
Thanks and thanks for watching too!
Habilio1
Agreed. 👍
Great classical influenced guitar solo toward the end (just before it flows straight into "Steal Away the Night")!
@@LateNightLessons also thank you for sharing your brilliant talent and your insights with us.
Just found this channel...really good stuff. Great break down of one the Masters work and my lifetime favorite...RIP Mr. Rhoads.
Thank you for this l love the way you explain these parts , Randy was the reason l try to play
Great lesson David, Gone or not Randy was a master of the guitar at his age R.I.P RANDY RHOADS
Thank you for sharing this. Double R was fantastic.
Just found you last night-love your lessons and information. Especially regarding Randy Rhoads! ❤️
Best Randy video I've ever seen...thank you.
Haven't looked yet but how about Rik Emmett? He was the guitarist that made me want to play. I purchased the "Rock n Roll Machine" vinyl lp and I was hooked. I did subscribe to your channel.
Trivia: S.A.T.O. = Sailing Across The Ocean
For myself, the song, “Diary Of A Madman” has it all as far as Randy’s finest work.
Very well said
I love Randy's classical influences with metal guitar. He is one of my favorites. That last example from Diary of a madman was great. I'm going to fiddle around with those chords on guitar now. Thank you.
Thanks LNL for showing some of my favorite songs from one of the best ever!
I'll say this: you're lesson CONTENT is very valuable , and the way you break it down to essential principles .
David, I have become a huge fan of yours. Randy did seem like a musical sorcerer of sorts. I never got see him live but a few friends of mine did. They said they mesmerized by his skills and colorful chord palette. Great job as always.
Man randy was really an amazing guitarist, far beyond any one else at that time. Thanks for putting this video out it is great.
The key to RR’s distinct tone is the MXR Distortion plus ... it has such a nasal sound that is very recognizable ... love the chord play episode
just discovered your channel bro and I gotta say being based in alot of 90s music with some clsssic rock on the side and progressing into more metal. you are an amazing guitarist and I've learned a lot of my favorite 80s licks from you and look forward to figuring more out watching your channel
you are the coolest guitar master on you tube thank you for sharing your gift
Great lesson! I'm a huge RR fan, one of my biggest influences. Terrific explanation, theory and application. Great tone and playing too!🤘🎸🎶
Loved that you included the Brouwer influence on DOAM, I studied classical in school and loved showing my instructors that!
That's awesome and thank you so much!!!
: ) ROCK ON!
Thank you for sharing your gift and understanding.
Cool. Randy was definitely Great. Thank you
Your right on with your analysis of Randy's playing. One of the first things I noticed years ago learning from tablature from the "Tribute" album.
I love this video because it explores some of the best not so popular Randy pieces. Steal away is one of my favorites since I’m a kid. SATO as well. Randy was just such an amazing person and musician. I think about it at least once a week if he were still around what he be doing and what would he have become
Thank you for posting this video and thank youtube algorithm for putting it in front of me. I will have fun with this!!
Awesome dude!!! I’ve been playing him for the last week, hence your video popping up! The Diary stuff is so intriguing to me right now! Peace man
Would love to see a break down of the Revelation Mother Earth solo. Always wanted to wrap my head around it.
That's such a great song and solo!
I'll be sure to add some more Randy to the mix too!
Good luck and rock on!
: )
Excellent choice of licks. For me, some (lots) of his techniques were a mystery wrapped in a riddle. No bone movies tonight, I need to practice. Much thanks.
Time well spent, thanks for posting
Love this lesson. I keep rewatching it. 😎
..i was 15, depressed because ozzy and sabbath were broke. my buddies told me about ozzys new music, but i was so upset, not dealing with it, and got resentful i guess. i just couldnt understand why such an entity like sabbath, could separate. ....i snubbed the 1st album, but one night in a small town where i went to a party (i was 17 by that time), i heard the whole diary of a madman album, and there it was!!! the sound was so special, the riffs, the solos, the songs, and yes...ozzy!!!!..that is what turned me to studying guitar for 10hrs a day, and trying to go for 16hrs haha!!! anyways, there was just something so special about his tone...it was the real deal, he was what i needed. so was van halen, but for me, randy just was exactly what i needed as a musician....he still is. he isnt passed, he put his sole right on vinyl....anyways, who the heck am i....just some guy greatful guy who will never hear randy as gone....cheers, and thx for a great video man, be good.
Great lesson! The songs you’ve chosen to analyze are my favorite compositions from Randy, and now I know why! They rose above the ordinary with their unusual chords and gave his melodies their classical, baroque feel! But he threw in bluesy elements as well to round out the sound to create his unique style.
Man I’ve watched all your chord play vids these are so awesome!!!
No bone movies for me was the 'what the heck?' music progression, very different sounding and very layered. Great video! Subbed.
