- Hey everyone! Here's the next episode of Brewster's Millions Of Rants with Randy Rhoads Diminished Secrets. As I admitted in the video, I've had a TON of requests for Randy Rhoads piling up lately, and I figured this lesson would be a good one to address some of those requests that have poured in - so let's dive in!
This lesson revolves around something very specific hiding in Randy's legendary playing style, and that's the use of diminished tonalities in his music. I went the extra mile for this lesson and actually pulled out the transcription books for Blizzard Of Ozz, Diary Of A Madman, and Tribute. Within the books, I scoured around looking for any licks, fills, or solos where Randy noticibly dove into diminished flavors and sounds.
The ideas shared in this lesson include a brief breakdown of the three different types of diminished tonalities heard/found in music, a two-part analysis of some diminished seventh arpeggio runs found in Randy's live 'Tribute' guitar solo, a variation of these ideas as heard in the solo from 'Steal Away (The Night),' and much more!
Needless to say, if you're a Randy Rhoads fan, a LNL viewer that's been patiently waiting for more Rhoads action on the channel, a player wanting to explore diminished chords/arpeggios in music, or maybe you're just curious what all the fuss is about - this lesson is totally for you! Give this episode a view, leave some comments/feedback, and please subscribe to Late Night Lessons - THANK YOU!

Here I am 48 years old and have loved Randy Rhoads for 41 of those years.
The fact you're getting requests, tells me the younger generation still loves this guy and chases him.
God Bless RR!
Randy Rhoads = Automatically click
I know huh… lmao
Ditto!
Yep
Yup.
100% 😂
Over 40 years since his passing, and his playing is still analyzed. Long live R.R. Thanks David 🤘
Agreed….well said👍
Ex Randy student here, very nice to see, and yes he played fast and was like the hammer-on king! Great job, thank you!
English players are trilling fools, but no one touches Dave Murray when it comes to trills. All he can do, but man, does he do it well. So much that very few notice he only has ONE lick. It's the same lick every solo, but it never gets old. He just changes keys and modes Aeolian, Dorian, and Minor Pentatonic.
@@lelandgaunt7130 I like Dave and Adrian Raise the Irons!🇬🇧
@@theartist124 One of my favorite bands. 🤘
@@lelandgaunt7130 Me too man, saw them first on the Powerslave tour, Steve killin’ it as well they all were, cheers!🍻

@@lelandgaunt7130 I saw Maiden up close, front row in 1985, right in front of Dave... WOW.... so amazing...
Never can get enough Randy Rhoads or Dave Brewster... Dave, it's always a treat to watch your videos 🙏🏼🤘🏼✨
The reason I started looking into music theory was because diminished always caught my ear. Randy was definitely a master of it
Randy's energy is quite unique.
Awesome tribute to the legend!! Thanks!! 1956-1982 RIP
I've played diminished runs Ala Skolnick... this is a whole new level haha... can't wait to work these out
OMG ... David, another incredible lesson about Randy.
His diminished work was, to me, his most impressive and 'scary-wow' playing. You really explained what he was working towards so clearly.
Thanks for all your work. 🎵
Anything on Randy I'm watching. He was amazing.
Agreed, I've been rewatching all his Randy vids, so a new one is sick 🤟
Thanks Dave! Randy was awesome and gone WAY too soon.
It IS deceptively hard to play clean. I grabbed a guitar and immediately had to slow it way down... You make everything look so damn easy hahaha
\m/
I knew I wasn’t gonna be disappointed David . I wanna “ Party with you Dude “ 😉😎👍. Randy went Waaaaay too soon😕
Love your playing and your presentation!
👍Nifty AF ! Randy as well as that 1st OG band with Ozzy is STILL one of my all time favorite guitarists & rock bands. RIP RR
The MXR has been pushed back (again) to Summer. I’ve been waiting on that one too! Can’t get enough of RR lessons. Thanks Dave!
More Randy!
Such a great point you made about how it seems like he used diminished licks all the time even though he really didn't. He was so unique & instantly recognizable that each of his many "Randyisms" is like that. They might just be on 2 or 3 songs but it always seems like more. It could also be because we only got those 2 albums + Tribute and have listened so many times and can hear every note in our heads at this point.
Amazing video! There can never be enough Randy content.
I’ve been playing Randy Rhodes as a hobby in a few times in bars are on the street for about 35 years. I’ve got numerous instructional videos.
This might be the most succinct and powerful Randy Rhodes lesson I have ever seen. This is the stuff that you skip to if you’re looking for the goods.
Hey dude!! There's a ton of crappy instructional videos out there on YT!! You do really quality work!! l love your vids!! Keep it up!!
Randy was the reason I picked up the git fiddle!
Excellent lesson! And, I have to say your vibrato is knocking me out these days. Thick and rich, like a good maple syrup :)
Awesome lesson! Throughout the years you have become my teaching hero 🥰
I'd watch anything on Randy's playing. Blizzard is still my favourite album, and Diary close behind. Thanks for this David - great work from you, as ever!
The MXR Randy Rhoads pedal is coming out this summer, according to his sister! She says it’s worth the wait!! 🤟🏻
A lot of great diminshed runs in Gypsy Jazz.
Check out "For Sephora" by the Rosenberg Trio.
Great video as always David!
Randy is my favorite player. Blizzard of Oz was amazing except for the production. Diary of a Madman is my favorite album of all time, mind boggling and still get chills from it after 40+ years.
Yes! That solo on the title track is just😮😱🤯🤯
Interesting. I too find this production a bit weird. What was the main point for you?
I thought the guitars were crazy thin. Vocal pitch-effects overblown. Too much use of detuning everywhere in fact.
Thanks David. Always had the feeling Randy had so much more up his sleeve. Taken too young. Got that Tribute album in '87 was hooked for life.
I have very few posters, the ozzy/randy blacklight poster is one I have had since I first seen it maybe 86
Thanks man. Tribute is my favorite Ozzy album.
Thank you David!! 🙌 This was sooo f’n awesome!! One of your absolute best and most inspiring lessons!! 🔥 I love Randy!!
It was Randy Rhoads that made me realize as a teenager in the mid-90s how he used classical elements in rock music..... and I now realize that it was many of these diminished licks that made me turn my head and start studying his music as well as Theory in conjunction with classical music in general.... this lesson really helps bridge the gap of what he was approaching theoretically and how to apply it to your own playing.. great lesson, thank you very much
Man...🤔 is your guitar playing out of my🤔 League! Das 😎 all! Great lesson!❤👍👏👏👏👏
Randy's informed, classical-tinged style was the perfectly equal, but opposite approach to EVH's purely instinctual playing. Both arrived at many of the same sentiments and sounds, but from entirely different perspectives. They were also GREAT rhythm guitar players and riff masters that had to do all of the guitar work in their bands, which were basically just Power Trios with a singer. Cheers!
Randy always worked out his solo parts beforehand , Eddie winged it and rarely if ever worked out a solo beforehand which is 1000% more difficult to do .
@2216sammy, good point about EVH's approach to soloing. In his own words, he pulled a lot of his best solos right out of his ass, totally in the moment. When the band convened in the studio to rehearse and record, the engineer knew to always have tape rolling at all times, just in case some kind of great thing happened accidentally. "Eddie, can you play that again?" "Play what? I don't remember what I did." So they'd run the tape back and he'd listen then try to come up with the same thing or something close. If he couldn't do it and what was already on tape was the best version, they reportedly would use that and edit it into the track. Supposedly this was how the solos were done on a few of their biggest hit records.
I never play that sort of stuff but appreciate you covering it the way you do. Brilliant little bite-size knowledge sharing, thank you!
Synister Gates might be a fun idea. Hell you could even include Zacky Vengeance if you felt like it. Randy developed this into a warm up exercise, may have taken years. I don't think he was done with the solo yet.
Thank you for doing this. I just love diminished runs. Randy was my first guitar hero.
Nice! I was waiting for you to get to the diminished run from his spotlight solo. I love that, so much fun to play and you can get a lot of mileage out of some variations of that. Excellent lesson as usual! 🤘🎸
Awesome Dave, listening to you play those reminds me of first listening to the cassette back in '87. Good live album.
I never get tired of anything Randy🤘
Excellent lesson. The world needs more diminished licks!
Let’s goooo! So awesome dude, Randy is one of my absolute favorite players.
Well done 👍
spent more time on randys stuff more than others... had my fill of VH and Rush especially , then spent at least twice the time on rhoads stuff.. Still play some of it to keep up some chops,, Davids fantastic at breaking down the playing.. Thanks for the great video Dave !!
Me and many of my guitar teachers preferred to teach Randy's stuff because it was what he played was so much easier than some of his peers to figure out .
@@2216sammy especially Eddie... His magnitude is way beyond "king.."
Another great video Mr. Brewster keep up the great work.
Awesome lesson David thanks so much 👏👍🤘🎸
You are an incredible player and teacher, thanks for these videos!
Great lesson \m/
Lots of requests because you are easily one of the best online teachers. Your laid back demeanor, thorough breakdowns and knowledge of music theory and explaining how it is working in the song is just top notch. Keep bringing it.🤘
Waiting for that pedal too!
Great lesson!
Thx, Dave!🤘👽🎸
Randy is my favorite guitarist. Best I ever heard. Thank you for keeping his music alive. The books are not close due to his triple tracking.
Thank you, David!
Great lesson man..thanks!
Fantastic video !!! Keep em comin' !!
Awesome dude
Fantastic lesson!!!
awesome thanks man. you remind me of my guitar teacher when i was 13. i was so lucky to have had him as my foundation
Great lesson. Looking forward to more lessons on Randy.
This is great. Randy was one of the best. His playing will always hold up til the end of time. Peace.
all time A leaguer
Amazing Lesson! Good job man! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 R.R. 🙏🏻
Another great lesson Dave. Can't go wrong with Randy Rhodes . Thanks
you spelled roads wrong
Fuck yeah! Randy Rhoads!
Awesome!!🎸🎸🎸
Lucid, accurate, intelligent & engaging teaching. The best I've ever seen on Spew Tube! Kudos and keep up the great work good sir! BTW, RR is in a class by himself...NO ONE was, or has been able (before him or after him) to amalgamate neo-classical, blues, metal into anything close to what Randy created. Dearly missed for sure.
Thanks for this, Dave!!!
Rhoads = GOAT
Rhoads wasn't remotely close to being the GOAT and guitarists on the strip back in the 70's will tell you the same .
@@2216sammy go play in the road and make yourself useful for once in your life kid
@@2216sammy and none of those idiots created anything remotely as epic or legendary that Blizzard of Ozz or Diary of a Madman are either.
@@2216sammydoes your mother know you’re posting gibberish?? 👍🏻✌🏻
Awesome!!!!
Randy was so amazing. Ozzy may not remember it (haha), but he had some of the most legendary & bad ass guitar players ever. From Black Sabbath to Randy, Jake E Lee, and eventually Zaak. I cannot think of anyone else that had that many guitar Gods in their band over the years. Thx David.
Great great post! I think Randy gets over shadowed by a lot of guys and because he had such a limited time on scene, he doesn’t have the huge selection as some.
The amazing thing is all that he accomplished in two studio albums, one live album and just about a year and a half of time.
Absolutely incredible.
Thanks David 🎸💯💯👏👏💜🤍💙❤️
This is the lesson I have been waiting for...Love diminished arps and runs !
Cool, thank you!!
Wow...just wow! Great video, mate! Randy's live stuff always held so much mystique to me. Absolutely brilliant video! Thank you!
Thanks for you fantastic lessons.
I must say, even as a guitar player who has been playing since 76, your skills and teaching methods are top draw.
Learnt so much from you thank you
Amazing, very cool lesson. Thank you sir!👍
This brings me back to my first year learning guitar, so glad I learned the Tribute album solo transcribed in a guitar mag, now I may have to do it again after all these years!
A double flat seven would be a sixth, wouldn't it? Great lesson.
Love a great Randy lesson, already foresee some serious woodshedding tonight, thanks!
Back in the day , when ear training his stuff I noticed very heavy influences and runs that are very similar to Alvin Lee stylings in his play. I never heard Randy acknowledge this, but the lines are there. Just a food of thought
Diminished? Randy? Awesome!!!!
i still cannot believe he's using a Vamp 2 pro :D i remember making demos using the Vamp2 pod like and people didn't know what i was using which was flattering.
What a great Les Paul you have! Thank you for this great tutorial.
Diminished 7 arpeggios are cool in that you can shift 3 frets in either direction and have a different inversion of that same diminished chord. It makes Randy's shift from F#° to A° work nicely in that sequence.
Freaking badass I saw Randy on the diary tour feb 8th 1982 at cobo hall detroit michigan love all your vids very helpful
Dave - Great lesson as always. Don't wait for the MXR pedal, do another Randay before the pedal release and another after. You can do an acoustic focused lesson like Diary, Can't Kill..., etc., etc. More Randy!
Can’t wait for your next RR lesson and that MXR pedal
I'd love to see Randy's playing on 'Tonight' analyzed. The lead is amazing and the song has so much feeling
Thanks for all the RR content. Keep it coming. EVH said that RR copied him, but I don't think it's true. RR was unique and great by his own merits. His stuff remains very relevant as he influenced so many players.
Very cool David. Always appreciate your ... you .... that you bring to this, but this one surpassed all that. Very.
👍👍👍
I break for Randy Rhodes tips...thx David. 🎸
Thanks and congrats on your 100k +. Love the channel!
👊👍👊 any thing on him I'm clicking on I was going to get the coffee table book that came out but its a grand on Amazon
Absolutely fantastic have a wonderful day also i have subscribed to the channel ❤😊
Diminished 7th arpeggio runs are bad ass leading to an epic sweep pattern to end with a resolve, good lesson my man!!
