English players are trilling fools, but no one touches Dave Murray when it comes to trills. All he can do, but man, does he do it well. So much that very few notice he only has ONE lick. It's the same lick every solo, but it never gets old. He just changes keys and modes Aeolian, Dorian, and Minor Pentatonic.
@@lelandgaunt7130 Me too man, saw them first on the Powerslave tour, Steve killin’ it as well they all were, cheers!🍻 i.postimg.cc/5ycD38pR/IMG-4985.jpg
Here I am 48 years old and have loved Randy Rhoads for 41 of those years. The fact you're getting requests, tells me the younger generation still loves this guy and chases him. God Bless RR!
Such a great point you made about how it seems like he used diminished licks all the time even though he really didn't. He was so unique & instantly recognizable that each of his many "Randyisms" is like that. They might just be on 2 or 3 songs but it always seems like more. It could also be because we only got those 2 albums + Tribute and have listened so many times and can hear every note in our heads at this point.
OMG ... David, another incredible lesson about Randy. His diminished work was, to me, his most impressive and 'scary-wow' playing. You really explained what he was working towards so clearly. Thanks for all your work. 🎵
I'd watch anything on Randy's playing. Blizzard is still my favourite album, and Diary close behind. Thanks for this David - great work from you, as ever!
spent more time on randys stuff more than others... had my fill of VH and Rush especially , then spent at least twice the time on rhoads stuff.. Still play some of it to keep up some chops,, Davids fantastic at breaking down the playing.. Thanks for the great video Dave !!
It was Randy Rhoads that made me realize as a teenager in the mid-90s how he used classical elements in rock music..... and I now realize that it was many of these diminished licks that made me turn my head and start studying his music as well as Theory in conjunction with classical music in general.... this lesson really helps bridge the gap of what he was approaching theoretically and how to apply it to your own playing.. great lesson, thank you very much
Great video as always David! Randy is my favorite player. Blizzard of Oz was amazing except for the production. Diary of a Madman is my favorite album of all time, mind boggling and still get chills from it after 40+ years.
Interesting. I too find this production a bit weird. What was the main point for you? I thought the guitars were crazy thin. Vocal pitch-effects overblown. Too much use of detuning everywhere in fact.
I absolutely love the randy videos…they always get me to pick up my guitar and start playing. This diminished stuff is weak point of mine and I really feel like nobody used it better then randy did. He’s been an inspiration for me since I was a kid and I keep continuing to learn from his style. Thank you so much for putting this out there and explaining it all so well. Keep them coming.
Mr. Rhoads is the greatest composer of melodic and memorable guitar licks and runs. His mother taught him piano and he learned music theory and why this sounds good together. Well balanced with his technical virtuosity on the electric guitar …combined with playing it live at deafening levels through his own pedal board. He was an educated guitarist and a wonderful human being …a kind hearted musician that is missed by us all.
Nice! I was waiting for you to get to the diminished run from his spotlight solo. I love that, so much fun to play and you can get a lot of mileage out of some variations of that. Excellent lesson as usual! 🤘🎸
This is my fav lesson you have done! But the whole time I couldn't stop thinking about how badly I want a Randy Rhoads tshirt with that purple Sabbath font. Redbubble here I come! 😈
Lots of requests because you are easily one of the best online teachers. Your laid back demeanor, thorough breakdowns and knowledge of music theory and explaining how it is working in the song is just top notch. Keep bringing it.🤘
Randy was so amazing. Ozzy may not remember it (haha), but he had some of the most legendary & bad ass guitar players ever. From Black Sabbath to Randy, Jake E Lee, and eventually Zaak. I cannot think of anyone else that had that many guitar Gods in their band over the years. Thx David.
Randy's informed, classical-tinged style was the perfectly equal, but opposite approach to EVH's purely instinctual playing. Both arrived at many of the same sentiments and sounds, but from entirely different perspectives. They were also GREAT rhythm guitar players and riff masters that had to do all of the guitar work in their bands, which were basically just Power Trios with a singer. Cheers!
@2216sammy, good point about EVH's approach to soloing. In his own words, he pulled a lot of his best solos right out of his ass, totally in the moment. When the band convened in the studio to rehearse and record, the engineer knew to always have tape rolling at all times, just in case some kind of great thing happened accidentally. "Eddie, can you play that again?" "Play what? I don't remember what I did." So they'd run the tape back and he'd listen then try to come up with the same thing or something close. If he couldn't do it and what was already on tape was the best version, they reportedly would use that and edit it into the track. Supposedly this was how the solos were done on a few of their biggest hit records.
Great great post! I think Randy gets over shadowed by a lot of guys and because he had such a limited time on scene, he doesn’t have the huge selection as some. The amazing thing is all that he accomplished in two studio albums, one live album and just about a year and a half of time. Absolutely incredible.
Lucid, accurate, intelligent & engaging teaching. The best I've ever seen on Spew Tube! Kudos and keep up the great work good sir! BTW, RR is in a class by himself...NO ONE was, or has been able (before him or after him) to amalgamate neo-classical, blues, metal into anything close to what Randy created. Dearly missed for sure.
I was 20 when Randy died. Because he was a little older than me, I don’t think his youth struck me back then. But it sure as hell strikes me now. What an absolute tragedy. An avoidable, disgusting tragedy. The fact that Randy was possibly struggling with the pilot to save those on the bus, makes the pain I still feel even worse. Not only was he a musical genius, and a loyal friend and bandmate, he was also a good kid. One that any parent would be proud to have as their own.
Randy's playing was full of ornaments like mordents and 3 note chromatic slides, especially in his Tribute spotlight solo. Thanks for doing this. Looking forward to your next video on Randy.
Synister Gates might be a fun idea. Hell you could even include Zacky Vengeance if you felt like it. Randy developed this into a warm up exercise, may have taken years. I don't think he was done with the solo yet.
Thanks for you fantastic lessons. I must say, even as a guitar player who has been playing since 76, your skills and teaching methods are top draw. Learnt so much from you thank you
I know nothing about playing the guitar, but I into listening to the guitar, it memorized me, doing 6 notes instead of three, I saw Eddie Van Halen in 81, wished I could have seen Randy Rhodes he blew me away!!!!!
This brings me back to my first year learning guitar, so glad I learned the Tribute album solo transcribed in a guitar mag, now I may have to do it again after all these years!
i still cannot believe he's using a Vamp 2 pro :D i remember making demos using the Vamp2 pod like and people didn't know what i was using which was flattering.
Dave - Great lesson as always. Don't wait for the MXR pedal, do another Randay before the pedal release and another after. You can do an acoustic focused lesson like Diary, Can't Kill..., etc., etc. More Randy!
Back in the day , when ear training his stuff I noticed very heavy influences and runs that are very similar to Alvin Lee stylings in his play. I never heard Randy acknowledge this, but the lines are there. Just a food of thought
Thanks for all the RR content. Keep it coming. EVH said that RR copied him, but I don't think it's true. RR was unique and great by his own merits. His stuff remains very relevant as he influenced so many players.
Ex Randy student here, very nice to see, and yes he played fast and was like the hammer-on king! Great job, thank you!

And how much more could he have done?! We will never know...

Absolutely. I have scoured the Internet looking for the lesson tapes, and so far have found only 8 minutes of him teaching, it's still great though.

@ClassIncarnate here ya go
The reason I started looking into music theory was because diminished always caught my ear. Randy was definitely a master of it
Never can get enough Randy Rhoads or Dave Brewster... Dave, it's always a treat to watch your videos 🙏🏼🤘🏼✨
Anything on Randy I'm watching. He was amazing.
Agreed, I've been rewatching all his Randy vids, so a new one is sick 🤟
Awesome tribute to the legend!! Thanks!! 1956-1982 RIP
Randy's energy is quite unique.
