Awesome lesson! I'm on a bit of an Yngwie kick right now, so I figured I could use the Harmonic Minor overview. This was a great introduction to how the chords are built. And that arpeggio lick at the end is next on my list of things to figure out! Thanks again!!
Cool lesson, thx. Check out Steve Hackett’s solo on Firth of Fifth, which uses elements of E harmonic minor over non “weird” chords. 😀 Thanks also for explaining the sus vs add difference in a straightforward way.
So how do you "harmonize" the stuff? Cause I just wrote all the notes and skipped them and played arppegiated 4note chords (sorry x) ) and it just doesn't make sense I think.
I learnt tears in the rain by ear. And I realize that 1) I'm playing it wrong (fingerings near the nut all the time) and 2) I always wondered what the hell these chords were. And I'm glad you clarified that for me ! Thanks a lot !
"Tears in the rain" was also my introduction to weird stretchy chords. When I first listened to that I decided that I have to learn it. I pulled out my classical and looked up the tabs and I was absolutely shocked that the very first chord had a stretch from the 7th to the 3rd fret haha
I can totally try to add that to the pile and thanks for the suggestion! I really dig his ideas/playing and I love those sustained diads that he puts in his music and usually the final note of a phrase or lick too. Aaron Marshall from Intervals does that sort of thing too, so I'll see what I can come up with! : )
I love that!!!! This scale has always intrigued me but also scared me at the same time...always found it difficult. I need to dive back into this. Thanks!
Another excellent lesson David ,thanks so much ...love how you mentioned the Joe Satriani piece as I took those chords from reading the article back in the day and years later fused them into a song written for my daughter that I decided years later. Thank you for all th ed wonderful lessons too , loved the Jake E Lee lesson still working on those fingering. Have a great weekend.
Amazing lesson and teacher 🙏
Thank you!

A few of the Billie Eilesh singles are Harmonic Minor.
Dave you are one Hell of a Teacher!! Bravo Sir.
Great lesson! I really like that arpeggiated chord progression. It kind of reminds me of Scarified.
my go to death metal mode!! try using this instead of open chugs for some hella cool breakdowns that arent mind numbing to play

This one is way over my head, too many numbers and letters. I'll stick to chord play of AC/DC

I have only one question: why is there a B at all in Sultans of Swing ? Shouldn't it be Bb ? It's just a passing tone while doing the bend ?
Good to hear harmonic minor is a great scale
Do you have other mode chord scale vids I like to hear what other players think of

Awesome lesson, thank you again. Any possibility for chord play on Nick Johnston, I really like his harmony approach.
