Hey guys! Finnish ex-vanlifer and vegan here! So excited for your Nordic adventures!
I don’t know how much time you’re planning on spending in Finland, when and in which parts of the country. My recommendations are mostly going to be for the heart of winter (December to March). I gotta say that if you do proper winter vanlife in Finland, you guys are badass! The coldest weather I’ve lived in a van in was -5 degrees and I was already sleeping with clothes and a beanie on. But I know of Finns who have lived in vans throughout the year in Lapland, so it’s definitely doable!
The first thing I want to bring up are your tires. I see you changed your tires, but did you get winter tires or just new summer tires? At least in Finland (don’t know about Sweden and Norway) it’s mandatory to have winter tires on between November and March when the weather so demands. No one uses snow chains here, like I’ve literally NEVER seen them except on tractors, everyone has winter tires on. Most people use studded winter tires but also non-studded winter tires are quite popular among people who mostly drive in cities where the roads are more likely to be less icy (due to more traffic that breaks the ice and salt being thrown on the roads to melt the ice). But the thing is, all roads can and WILL be icy at some points. Like literally covered in ice and slippery as hell. It’s prohibited to drive in summer tires in such conditions and it can also be very dangerous. You can read more about the law by googling “Finland winter tires law”. People usually switch to winter tires in November (earlier up north) and keep them on until March. I really hope you got (or get) winter tires, preferably studded ones, not only to abide by the law but for your own (and Custard’s) safety.
The second thing is, and I saw someone else comment this as well, find a way insulate your windows. Windows are very efficient at letting heat escape. Make padded window covers and perhaps find a way to cover them from the outside as well. And get good ice scrapers. Your windows will freeze. Both outside and inside the van. Find a way to deal with condensation on the windows - lots of cloths for wiping the windows if nothing else. And get a good snow brush for brushing snow off the van. Oh and you might wanna make sure that you have very warm blankets in your van, just in case it’s not always nice and warm inside.
The next thing is clothing. It gets cold up here. Like reeeally cold. Norway’s winters are usually a bit milder than Finland’s because of the Gulf stream, but Finnish winters can be brutal. A regular winter day in Helsinki can be anything from +3 and rain to -20 and half a meter of snow on the ground. Up north a regular winter day is anything between -5 and -30 with up to a meter of snow. So you need warm clothes. And I’m not talking just woolly sweaters and woolly socks (yes bring those too), but actual snow pants and thick guilted/down jackets. If you are planning on spending time outdoors in the winter, snow pants are a must. And good winter shoes/boots. But make sure your boots are not too small! There needs to be space for thick warm socks and a little bit extra room left still. Your toes are more likely to freeze in shoes that are too small. And you need layers. Good long johns are a must. And get good gloves, beanies and scarfs.
Ok then onto the more fun bits!!
Finland is amazing for vegans. The big cities have vegan restaurants and most restaurants throughout the country will have a vegan option or something veganizable on the menu and literally any restaurant you go to anywhere in the country, you can ask if they can make you a vegan meal and they know what it means and are usually very accommodating. For groceries, Lidl is obviously the cheapest, but the S- and K- chains have much larger selections. If you shop at S-Markets or Prismas, all vegan products’ price tags are marked with a little green V! Easy :) You’ll be pleasantly surpised at how many little v signs there are throughout the stores, Finland is good to vegans! And again, this is true for big cities as well as small and remote towns!
Things you need to do in Finland:
    - Go to the sauna (It’s originally a Finnish thing and a big part of our culture! You can find public saunas pretty much everywhere! Try a regular and a smoke sauna. For the smoke sauna I recommend the one at Kiilopää in Saariselkä).
    - Take a dip in a frozen lake (yikes)
    - Visit Santa Claus in Rovaniemi (whoever told you Santa Claus is from the North Pole was lying to you, he’s always been from Finland)
    - Drive on an ice road on top of a frozen lake. You can find them for example in Viitasaari, Savonlinna and Kuopio. And there’s one in Oulu going over the frozen sea to the island of Hailuoto. The roads usually open around end of December/January when enough ice has formed. They are legit roads open to everyone and the locals use them every day. Although driving on them is at your own risk and there are usually weight limits on the vehicles. It’s a crazy feeling driving in the middle of a frozen lake!! I really hope you get to experience it.
    - Go cross-country skiing (it’s a national sport!)
    - Go snowboarding or down-hill skiing (I recommend doing this at Ylläs)
    - Go winter fat biking (again, Ylläs)
    - Go snowshoeing
    - See the northern lights (You can look up apps for predicting them and use sites that follow space weather, but it’s a lot about luck. Sometimes it’s just best to keep looking up on clear nights!)
ParkForNight is pretty good in Finland as well. Many camping sites are closed for the winter but there are tons of public campfire spots with free firewood for anyone to use. These are called “nuotiopaikka” or “laavu”. We have lots of national parks too that are often nice for camping in the van. Some nice ones on your way include Repovesi, Pyhä-Häkki, Koli and Hossa.
In Lapland you want to go to Rovaniemi, Ylläs and Saariselkä. Avoid Levi, it’s touristic and a popular binge-drinking party scene and literally everything is better at Ylläs where the Ylläs-Pallas national park starts!
Oh and one last thing. It's gonna be dark. Get good flashlights and headlamps and wear reflectors on you when walking around. And take good care of yourself and your mental health to not let the darkness consume you :)
Let me know if you want more tips for places to visit in southern/middle-Finland! I think I’ve blabbered on for way too long already, 1, 2, 3, BYE!

Can´t wait for your norwegian adventure! Two norwegian vanlifers here, and we must say that norway has so many places you must see. We have not been driving our van in the snow, but I think with your preparations it will be fine. Some tips:
    - bring LOTS of wool clothes to have under your regular clothes. I already use them here now.
    - Be prepared for bad weather, then you will be happier for the good weather days. But you know this from the UK.
    - do you food shopping in Kiwi or Coop, not Joker or Meny, those are expensive. (or at least more expensive)
Places you should visit if you have time: (we live on the west-coast, so we will give you tips on this part of the country)
    - Stavanger: visit "Tre sverd i fjell" and hike to "Preikestolen"
    - Haugesund: visit "Haraldsstøtten" (where the viking king of Norway is buried)
    - Bergen: visit "Bergen brygge" and take the "Fløyen bane" up the mountain
    - Loen: visit Loen skylift and se the beautiful Fjords there
    - Geiranger: hike to "Storsæterfossen" (waterfall)
    - Ålesund: visit "Byrampen" viewpoint
(these cities are all on the west coast one after the other along the road, so it is possible to start at both ends depending on whether you are coming from the north or the south)
    And must try:
    - lots of cinnamon buns (especially in Bergen)
    - try "Akevitt"
    - try the brown cheese (I know it is not vegan, but it is worth trying once)
Good luck guys! Looking forward to following you on this trip! :)

@@cristin5762 You only do this if you live close to sweden. I am on the cold Canadian prairies where -35c with windchill making it feel like -45c is not unusual. I see all your windows and think they are a massive source of heat loss as I suspect they are not cold climate type windows. I would suggest two things: some insulation panels you can pop on windows to block out some cold. You also can expect some condensation and moisture so having some small heaters/fans to help air dry out and some mould removal cleaners to stay on top of any black mould from moisture. Beyond that, get some very good parkas, toques, scarves, boots, long johns (full length underwear) will also help.
Make sure you have a carbon monoxide detector as well. Keep shovels, a couple bags of kitty litter which work great for sliding under tires when you get stuck. Lastly if the back end has a little extra weight it helps prevent sliding when driving on icy roads.
Before driving on icy roads, take the bus to an open empty parking lot and practice braking and steering on icy pavement.
I am so excited for next summer and your Canadian adventures.

My biggest concern for you guys is heat loss from all your windows! Beautiful views, for sure, but I'd invest in some sized-to-fit window covers/insulation mats that you can either pop on/off or roll up or something. Those aren't double-pane glass, so you are looking at a LOT of heat loss through the windows. And also because they're not double-pane, when condensation hits, and the extreme cold outside meets the warm inside with your heater, it has a low chance to cause the windows to crack. That would be disastrous! Also, could cause your water tank to freeze if it's not insulated, which would crack your tank, since ice expands

First of all that water heater you have fitted will not work in bellow zero temps . And when your going to -20 to -40 there will be some massive problems you’ll come in to . Also there is no recovery up there as well the RAC or AA will not help . Please speak to Alex on Instagram and look more into this .

Remember that you don't have to have winter tires on in Norway. If they are summer tires they must not have less than 3mm tread. From 1 St November you have to have snowchains that fit your wheels in your RV. If you drive through Sweden you have to have winter tires from the 1 December and March if you encounter snow. Same rules in Finland. Denmark we do change to winter tires December to March more due to black ice than to snow.
Also a point to take into account. It is dark around the clock the closer you get to the Arctic circle. So I wouldn't plan to stay in Finland too long.

    • @kingingit

Here’s a very good tip. Take along bubble wrap covers for the inside of custard. There will be a lot of condensation since I presume you have single glazing. The wrap will cling to your windows and it will reduce condensation. It also may be a good idea to buy a Kärcher window cleaner to dry up your windows. And traveling in the cold… don’t forget to air custard !!!

This is going to be so awesome to watch :D
For Denmark, I would recommend not using rest stop bathrooms unless it's big ones, the small rest stop bathrooms are pretty dirty sometimes X( Rather than use the motorway, try driving out along the coastline and take a ferry across some places or drive through the small towns :D
If you're going to North Jutland, there's a bunch of cool places like Råbjerg Mile (A huge sand dune by the coast), Hirtshals Fyr and Skagen beach. At Skagen museum you can see beautiful paintings and in Frederikshavn there is a palm beach, which is obviously not as cool in the winter as in summer :D In Aalborg at the train station there's a model railroad and nearby is a zoo. If you go to Lønstrup there's a candy making store (Bolcheriet), where they make sweets, and there's also one in Skagen. Near Hirtshals there is an animal park called Fun Park, it's on the smaller scale but equally as fun, but I can't remember if they're open outside summer season. Klitmøller has been advertised as being a dream destination for surfers because of the waves and nearby Løkken, up the coastline, should also be pretty popular :D That's just some of the places I know of XD

A few tips from someone who lived in an RV in the Canadian winter..
You can never have too much insulation. Walls, floors, under the rv etc.
Plastic wrap on the windows makes a huge difference.
Water lines freeze easily so you'll want heat tape and extra insulation on them if you plan on using water.
Condensation can become a problem with cold temps outside which leads to mould so make sure you check behind cushions and wipe up any condensation regularly.
More power the better, so if you plan on being off grid be mindful of the extreme lack of solar energy in the winter. I'm sure you've thought of all these things already but I just thought I'd mention it just in case! Because I had to learn the hard way. Good luck!!

If you are heading up to the Arctic, you are definitely going to want to do something to make sure the water lines and toilet do not freeze. If the lines are at all on the outside walls/floors or under the bed, there is a VERY good chance that the heat from your heater will not be sufficient to keep the lines from freezing. Additionally, batteries HATE the cold, especially -20 to --40 C that is normal for where you are going. You may want to consider a portable battery charger and you will definitely want to ensure you have jumper (booster) cables. Finally, put a large bag of kitty litter in the van somewhere. If/when you get stuck in the snow and ice the kitty litter makes for a good grip for your tires.

Oh wow, you`re going to freeze up here with those big windows. Might be an idea to get some polystyrene sheets to cover a few of them at night to increase the R value. Get yourself a good fan heater and hook up Cable, there is plenty of ”ställplatser” open during the Winter to park overnight to plug in for a warm up and to charge everything. Välkommen 🇸🇪🇬🇧👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

So we have an RV that was insulated in belly of the trailer. It’s done with light weight styrofoam insulation. I don’t know if that’s something you are going to do or not. Also, you will want to insulate your water lines. Someone I know put their water lines through the heating ducts! Worked great. Good luck and have a great time! Love you guys! BTW, we lived in the mountains of the Sierra-Nevada’s in California. It was needed to keep our trailer insulated😢!

I’m a little late in commenting but my husband and I moved from Scotland around 7 years ago to live in Stockholm, Sweden. (So if you need a place to park Custard the bus whilst you explore Stockholm give me a shout! Your more than welcome for a wee dram).
But there’s one place you can’t miss Amy! I know how much you love animals and we visited an amazing Moose sanctuary on our last road trip in a tiny town called Ed on the border of Sweden & Norway. You can feed & hangout with the moose. The thing I loved most about it is that the moose can come and go as they please as the park has a swinging gate which the moose can choose to push open themselves, meaning they don’t need to hang out with us over enthusiastic punters if they don’t feel like it… they can head off into the huge wild reserve and forage for themselves.
Don’t miss it! The parks called Dalslands Moose Ranch. There are a few similar parks around but non that I know of as animal friendly as this one!
Get up close and make a new furry friend 🥰 (Not me! The moose obviously 🙄🤣).
    Have fun!

You guys fuckin rock. Very excited to see what happens. A few things to think on. I’m from Wisconsin, USA, think -40c in winter. With as many windows as beautiful Custard has remember they have no insulation value. I would consult your heater’s instructions and see what size vehicle it will maintain at what temps. The North does not f around, it can be life threateningly dangerous. I would make sure your batteries are in mint condition and that your heating runs into the battery compartment to keep them at a safe temp, cold kills batteries ya know. Also with batteries make sure you have enough juice to power the heat ler off grid for as long as you need. Have an emergency kit with shovels, chains, and a few sand bags full of grit, even kitty litter works well in case oolf slippage. If roads get icey….f ing stop. That big girl wont do well. Ok, so enough of the advice, you guys rock and I’m cheering you on from Poland!!!

Have you got a set of snow chains in Scandinavian countries they are compulsory and practice fitting them I would also recommend that you get some screen wash that goes down to -65c otherwise custards washer bottle will split get antifreeze checked.
The snow chains are expensive but you will be a lot safer on mountain roads I would also recommend cutting your speed by up to ten miles an hour on really bad roads an off road trick for starting off use second gear not first if you get into a slide steer into it and don't hit the brakes stay calm it is not the vehicle sliding that is dangerous but the driver panicking.
Question those sand ladders what is the weight they are rated too take.
    Kit you will need
    (A) Snow chains
    (B) Winter tyres approved in Scandinavian countries
    (C) Survival shovel to help dig yourself out if needed
    (D) Heavy duty tow rope
    (E) A good minus rated screen wash
    (F) Food and drink for emergencies
    (G) Good thermal blankets
    (H) An old blanket this is to cover custards engine when you are parked up keep the heat in (between bonnet and engine don't forget to remove before starting engine)
    Stay safe

Making a hatch that will cover the step/stairwell will change your life! You’ll pick up more square feet, it will feel safer you will feel a little more connected to the driver area. You will have a place to put something to put your legs Hop on when you’re sitting and that same but still can be another seat when people are visiting. It’s basically the square foot to the human body would occupy when you are parked up! I hope you see this in time because your guy could definitely do it. Don’t forget to make a way to lock it in place so it doesn’t fall down on you. It will also provide a place to stash your really muddy outdoor shoes when you’re not using them! End it provides extra insulation from the cold -I’m sure that’s a cold spot. Aesthetically all your open shelves that you have random containers on them, a maybe $50 investment or less in all matching containers - That you can see through,it’s amazing how much that calms the mind! And this last one may or may not suit your sensibilities, but we keep a teeny tiny trashcan next to the toilet. We do not put toilet paper in the toilet. The minute it’s gross it gets sealed and put in the main trashcan. It reuses all the plastic shopping bags we end up with it decreases the volume that your tank has to hold and therefore will increase the time between having to change it.

CUSTARD! Awesome! Is 'Bike Jones' coming along? The thing about Custard, while she is a salty old gal, is she is also a complete sanctuary.... the comfort that she gives back is in the fact she takes you where you want to go (with a "Thanks, drive") and her biggest benefit is the mental blanket of knowing she is your home...shelter, food, drink...she gives you your own personal bubble for when you simply just want to be. To the next adventure(s)! CHEERS! 🥃

Couple of ideas. Get some removable insulation to your windows. Big glass radiates out some of that nice warm air. You can see some examples by googling. Another thing is driving lights. If you head up north ( where I live) during the winter, you WILL be driving in a dark. So get you self some good led or xenon lights. So aux light and also upgrade the standard lights from Custard. This is really important and good lights are life savers.
