Just now able to watch this. Glad you guys made it down here to our neck of the woods! You’ll need to make another trip, and Jason, Jeremiah, and I could show you some great spots in the gorge.
Dunno how I’ve missed this video, but super glad y’all had a great first trip to the Gorge! The Osbourne Loop was a perfect intro- there were some awesome hidden arches and an overlook off trail in those along that route, but all the reason to come back!
I live just north of you on cave run lake. Spent many many years on the gorge trails. People come to hike climb kayak from all over. Very unique place.
The RRG is an amazing place. It's a two drive for me but I rarely get to go. During the week you'll have the place to yourself, the weekends are like a damn jamboree or something! Why someone told you that loop for your first trip is a mystery. There are rules for camping but they're never enforced. Trees and water are abundant so I've been a hammock camper for a long time. The chairs....I swear I'd skip food to make up the weight of the chair, it's become an essential piece of gear. You can spend years exploring and not see it all. I'd tell you my secret campsites but then I might run into you there when I'm trying to camp! Plan your trips for going at least once in each season, summer is deep damp rain forest, winter with the leaves off is breathtaking views....so much to see! Come back...read the rules on your parking pass!
No hate here! Been going to the Gorge for over 20 years and still haven’t hit some of the major spots. You guys went right past my favorite spot. Just on the right side of that bridge are two trails, one climbs & the other descends along the river. We take the lower. Hope to see you guys do more trips there, like you said, there’s plenty to see! The face bags were a riot...and a little creepy
i'd suggest you pick up a set of outragegis maps at the shell station on your next visit ... has all the cool poi's, water sources, known camp sites, and a lot of the side trails mapped
@@SchillBrothersOutdoors practically indispensable for a gorge hike ... i have a lot of videos on my yt of various hikes I have done there. There is also a book called hinterlands about the gorge, it has hundreds of unofficial trails ... i've done all the trails in that book except 1 and I haven't done that one simply because I promised someone I would hike it with them.
Funny but true Gorge story....my brother, youngest son & wife, and myself were day hiking in the Gorge years ago and somehow went off trail and got lost. Son hikes up to a peak and miraculously gets cell service! Who does he call? His older brother in Tucson, Arizona, who having hiked/backed-packed all his life in the Gorge gives us directions and gets us out of there! Now older son and fam are back in Cincinnati. But if you ever need help down there, I know who to call! 😄
Loved learning that area. Adding it to my must see list. Thanks for the tip about the Hiking Project app. Nice. Kevin, what was your sleeping system in the Duplex?
If you guys can afford the vacation time and want to do a warmer weather RRG hike, going there on the weekdays really is the way to go. I'm shocked you saw many people as cold as it was. In three full days of hiking there in late May on weekdays, I saw no more than seven groups of other hikers. Doing a Western roadtrip with a bunch of hikes next summer, but plan to hit up RRG again when I head back eastward in two summers. I absolutely loved it there.
Great trip, no hate here like you said 1st trip and there is so much to see. I've enjoyed exploring the RRG over the last two years. Our buddy Jason is a local who would be will to show you around on future trips. You should hit him up " Backpacking with Jason" he is an awesome guy. Nice to see I'm not the only one who carries Miso soup on could trips.
I was just up there last weekend running an ultra race last weekend ! It was cold in the am. I saw many backpackers on the trails I have never seen such huge packs that people were caring ! I'm an ultra light even in cold weather ! That's actually the same trail our race was on ! I probably wouldn't be doing any hiking in the dark too many cliffs . Stay safe !
We use the REI Hiking Project App for all of our hikes. It has saved our butts from getting lost several times! It does have a lot of nice features for being a free app. - Brandy
Great video guys. I've used your videos to dial in my hammock setup. I did my first ever solo multi day hike 11/3-11/5, so I think the week before you. Surprisingly I did the exact same hike, I even parked in the same lot. However I did drive over and tossed in Hanson's Point at the end. Going Sunday to Tuesday I ran into very few people. In fact I saw no one the first 24 hours.
You setup a lot more shots in this video and sprinkled in panning shots with slo-mo shots. You produced another good video. Very entertaining! Digital High-Five!! 🤚🖐
Great vid you guys need to come down to the Linville Gorge North Carolina going to be doing a winter hang in February chili cook off we have been doing it the past Three years
Jason Mears You picked one of the best spots on the Linville Gorge overlooking Lake James almost One of my favorite spots to backpack and do day hikes you won’t be disappointed if you’ve never been there
I was around Natural Bridge with my son, about 9 miles south, and we had a Sasquatch screaming at us,I had a sig 9,but my son was so afraid he pissed himself,I just threw up a big fire, till morn, and never looked back,TRUE STORY,make sure you are armed well
Super cool campsite. I really liked hiking here with "Backpacking with Jason". Definitely a jewel of an area. Looks like you all had an awesome time. Definitely need to check out that app.
Great Video guys! Honestly there isn’t any Bad trails in the RRG. Even what seems like a trip without some of the Major views it is still absolutely amazing!! Love it
Love your videos. I am planning on hiking at the Red River gorge around the beginning of April. Is there a hiking book for that area that you would recommend?
I love “winter” car camping here in the NW Florida Panhandle. My son and I had a tradition of a two nighter every December 22-24 at Blackwater River SP. One year it got down to 21F, which gave us the campground to ourselves. Perfect! I’m looking forward to the shift to backpacking with my grandson now. Loved the video!
Was inspecting your gear list and it seems to be missing the one thing I was most interested in: those awesome chairs! Very interested to know what those are. Nice shout-out nod to the AA guys there at the end, as well. :)
Packit Gourmet FTW! For your first trip to The Gorge, it looked like a great trip. You need to check out the Sky Bridge Station for local brews and great food. I don't think they serve alcohol on Sunday, so hit them on the way to the trail is my pro-tip for The Gorge. Starting the hike with a fine IPA and some loaded hummus in the furnace is a great start to the trip.
Lol...and I thought I needed new trail shoes! Those LaSportiva need to be ceremonially buried! Nice video, liked the intro especially. Hope you a great time at the Meet Up
Thanks so much for sharing.my dad and I hiked that same trail 30+ years ago. Did an out and back. Brought back alot of great memories. Keep up the great vids!

I did a very similar trip Easter weekend. My video quality is not as good as yours, but, check it out if you get a chance. Also did a trip Labor Day that included Hansen's Point if you are interested. As always, enjoyed your video.
So now they have video proof you guys from Ohio are the ones who trail side camp in the RRG! Your second night campsite was near Lost Branch and Osbourne Bend junction...illegal campsite! Well, at least you didn't get a ticket! this time...
Unfortunately the rules in the RRG are NEVER enforced. 300 feet from a trail...so that means the 50 campsites on Auxier Ridge are all illegal but packed every weekend. It's a shame that lack of budget keeps the rules from being enforced and the area is allowed to be raped every weekend. Yes, I'm bitter about it! LOL
@@asmith7876 Yep me too, 1978-79 Winter. Ah the days when Tunnel Ridge Road was open to the end. No rules about camping in the rock houses... trust me, they are called back country rangers and they do hike the official (numbered) trails. Law enforcement usually is working the parking areas for passes Wed-Sun. Local police are called in for drug enforcement and other crimes. The back country rangers write tickets for illegal fires/camping ect. Ask about it next time your at Gladie. Your experience is probably due to the sheer volume of people that visit now vs the 1 or 2 BC Rangers at any given time.
What a likable group of guys, and what a great respite from the real world. Happy hiking!
