I could've sworn the Allies already discussed the game having a map before when that info came out around the same time as the last video. Might've just been Huber and Brad talking about that though. Anyway, my understanding is it's just to help navigate the open world, since the Souls games haven't had one this expansive before. The dungeon-type areas look like they're going to play out more like the Souls games with secrets and shortcuts and interconnecting paths and all that. I don't expect them to have their own detailed maps.
@@bumpsy Miyazaki was pretty open in interviews that followed the gameplay reveal and it was addressed then. It's the same about the summon mechanic. We saw it in the previous trailer, but people thought it was just an invasion until it was clarified in the same interview(s).

It would be cool to have a game were you collect "map fragments" of a world map, but instead of all just being a single map done by a UI artist and then carved up into sections, you get small random fragments of what is clearly a dozen different maps, made by a dozen different artists at different times in history, each with their own errors and inaccuracies, and you have to manually line up pieces to fit where you are in the world and mark them up to make them more relevant to you. Like one might have a lake that's since drained, or a flat area that's now under water, or a castle that looks clean but is now ruined, or a city that clearly isn;t in that location on the map portion you have, and you can get multiple fragments that overlap and show the same area slightly differently. If they want to go nuts, don't even give the real life UI artists a look at the actual overhead view of the game, just let them wander the map (with some movement hacks, just to be nice) and draw things as they believe them to be.

I mean, previous Souls games didn't even have a map, so clearly an easy-to-read map is not a _necessary_ part of the experience anyway. If players didn't want to mess with the maps at all then they would be no worse off than in previous Souls games. :D
There are games that work with similar ideas, not seen anything as developed as you described though. The game sinking city has a map with very little info on it, and it’s up to the player to add on things such as blocked pathways. I find fleshing out a game map yourself really engaging, and having a map actively lie to you is a really interesting concept

This game looks mechanically complete. What I mean by that is that there are so many different gameplay methods of interaction that are all running parallel. Anyone else notice how those mini dungeon catacomb things are like a chalice dungeon meets a BOTW Shrine? I am so freaking pumped. My hype is going beyond limits I thought possible.
horse (double) jump and jumping in general is super unusual. I know in Sekiro you can jump, but this reminds me more of DS. The mix of Sekiro and DS/BB is very interesting

It still doesn't look quite as astonishing on a graphical level, but that's to be expected since DeSR was a PS5 exclusive remake by a different studio, and this is an open world game for current gen. The art style is incredible though.

If all the catacumbs, caves and structures found in the open world are mini Dark Souls Dungeons, then Elden Ring will be much richer then any other open world game to date.
I’m stoked, though I suppose my only worry is losing some of the intricacy of level design to the open world. I’m quietly confident FromSoft will pull it off though. I was skeptical of Zelda moving to open world for BOTW and that turned out brilliantly.

The thing this trailer does not need is "Narration". There is nothing that can not be understood by just looking at the trailer that needs Narration/explaination. I think in process of getting more "Main straem" and accessible to new players, I really hope that Elden ring does not get rid of the factor that has made it work till now which is "Mystery". Things to figure out on your own as a gamer. If anything else, that is the only thing that concerns me about Eldnen ring :) Cheers !!

They already said this one will be more straight forward and beginner friendly, but exploring the world, actually listening to NPCs, reading documents and just paying attention to the world building is a huge part of their games. I will gladly take it over 200 hours of cutscenes throwing every single detail in your face. People always make these games seem way more unclear or cryptic than they actually are, the actual main plot or main story string is really basic even in games like Bloodborne. Fromsoft games would be boring as hell if they would just be 15 hour long linear boss rushes with cutscenes that explain everything for dummies.

I understand after the matter of fact that you need to read all of the item descriptions and match all the puzzle pieces together, but honestly just seems like lazy story telling. It doesn’t even make sense from an immersive aspect. Again i love the world and design (the fact from software is influenced by berserk), but the story telling could definitely be improved especially this time around hopefully it’s the case with R.R. Martin aboard.

They definitely know what they are doing. They will always put animation quality, good tells, fast input etc. just overall gameplay and presentation over being a technical masterpiece. Which is fine by me. Something like Bloodborne or Sekiro will hold up a lot better visually than a bunch of AAA games out there.

yeah, they stated that dungeons are a mix of the old DS formula and non-random chalice dungeons. no map there and stuff.
