Basically, the difficulty in ER depends on how you want to play. The DLC feels like a big knowledge-check and the devs were like "Have you learned something from the base game?"
Sort of like Super Mario Bros. 2(aka the Lost Levels). It's basically a test on all the mechanical knowledge you learned from the Original Super Mario Bros.

Honestly these games are just poorly designed. Compare them to Doom. That game constantly checks your skill but along the way, it does an amazing job teaching you everything. The dlc is harder and adds two marauders, but it’s feels so appropriate. Doom actually is a good teacher. Fromsoft games are not good teachers and instead expect you to teach yourself through brute force

I still haven’t gotten good at guard counters because I just generally don’t like using shields, but once I started playing Elden Ring like it was Pokemon, it made a massive difference. The resistances some bosses, like Mohg has to fire is insane, and his weakness to bleed is such a big help
My only issue is theres no bestiary where you can read up on enemies and what theyre strong vs weak against and what (if any) elements or imbued attacks they use. For example, theres a lot of enemies that use attacks that are labeled as magic that dont necessarily look like magic. They arent obvious blue glintstone or carian oriented.
this would have made a fantastic addition to the game. oml. add in a pikmin style enemy viewer to the compendium for those enemies you just want to admire (without them trying to kill you) and you got a 11/10 addition to the game.

There's a mod that adds this. Including stats after you've killed enough of them and item drops after they've dropped... Well, at least there was, I'm not sure it's still updated.
I unironically think the new hyper aggressive bosses are designed with jumps as the intentional counter, you pretty much have to jump punish the end of their strings or you just don’t have any dmg windows.
You can, watch loopine's video called "Stop complaining about Waterfowl Dance", he shows that even if you are finishing a fully charged zweihander R2, you can just 2H your weapon and sprint away, jumping when she gets close and you just dodge the entire first hit. I remembered the "your camera is the worst enemy in dark souls" meme. Seems like even in elden ring it's still the enemy since if anyone is always locked on to the enemy they're also locked in by the camera. 🤣
they arent s, if you play pvp you will know that spamming jump is a terrible idea and you can get hit airborne easily from many weapons from the ground, its a special state where half of your body enters that makes it so certain attacks ignore that hitbox, thats how from coded most of ground AoE attacks so jump can actually be used in combat, otherwise you would get hit by all those attacks, there are also instances where you simply jump over the attack, because of how tight some attack hitboxes are, like the duelist iron ball thing
@@ags8507 you literally get s for anything below your waist, watch zulie's video about it. the funny part is, your hands are not getting these s, so if you are 2 handing you will not have your dangling arms as parts of that hitbox and you will have 'more s' during a jump. because your hands aren't getting hit.

Also a cool tip: If you dont feel like playing with a shield, give colossal weapons a try, especially the "guts sword" greatsword. Most of them have very respectable guard boost similair to fully upgraded medium shields and very fairly high physical negation. So you can make use of guard counters without even using a shield.

Feels like light rolls are being completely ignored. They move your character a greater distance you can often be too far for followup attacks or jump completely behind the enemy
Its been a known strategy since at least the original dark souls to not lock on to most bosses and typically youd lock on and off to reorient or to attack if you needed. Most bosses are large enough that you dont really need to lock to hit them.
Another thing a lot of people don’t realize is with a huge weapon like the new meteoric great sword you can block with 60 guard boost and 80 percent physical reduction. It’s super affective for last second and fighting new bosses and better than a lot of shields and I hardly ever see anyone do it.
I love using guard counter with those colossal weapons because most of them have like 80% damage reduction, basically a small shield that lets you do crazy damage
Its fantastic the amount of stuff you can jump over. The trick is to look at a boss like a fighting game, each move has a certain counter, its just working out what works
When I started using dual greatswords as I went into NG+, jump LB/L1 became my primary mode of attack. I noticed that quite often I would jump over an attack that would normally get me, and then punish it while the attack was barely finishing. I then began posture breaking at an alarming rate and most fights became cakewalks. I'm not suggesting I knew the jump meta before others, but I definitely felt its presence in a lot of fights early on. The trick was to play the game like Bloodborne or Sekiro and not Dark Souls. I only found jumping to not be as great against Malenia, Messmer, and Rellana. As they are smaller characters that typically don't swing low....also they just don't stop swinging.
I love assassin's gambit. I started using it after seeing Gino skip so many annoying zones with it and the mobs don't even notice you, the bad thing about it is that you can't do ANY action or they notice you, so you can't spam quickstep to go over lava, for example.

Well because their older games taught us that blocking is bad (Bloodborne straight-up mocks you for wanting to do it) and are way easier (and more fun) without even bothering to ever use a shield outside of the infamous grass crest for the free stamina regen lol, or other passive effects
For real, I killed Margit on my first attempt back when it came out because of guard counters. As someone who really likes using shields in these games, guard counter is the best thing they’ve ever added to combat. When I saw it in the tutorial cave, I knew that it was gonna be awesome.

I started replaying in prep for the DLC, and I started using jump because it actually felt better than rolling all the time, but didn't know why. This definitely explains a lot of it.

@@Fmakegeo6 ognbal used it on rellana and deflected her sekiro style without taking any dmg, if u time it like sekiro deflect u dont drain stamina at all
@@Fmakegeo6 Because you have to learn when to use it... it's not meant to turn you into Sekiro, what you're supposed to do is find attacks that you can follow up with a guard counter after doing a pefect block, such as combo ends. The Ongbal video the comment above mentions showcases it very perfectly, if you notice he doesn't parry all time.
Unlike Sekiro, deflect itself seems to do nothing (even if it does, seems negligible). You need to follow up with a guard counter to make any progress. As a result, you can probably get more hits (while being more susceptible to hit) with dodge and attack than from deflect and guard counter. So, it seems to be more like a slightly better version of blocking, nothing as crazy as Sekiro deflect. Secondly, ER, like other souls games, have animation commitment. So if you deflect within a short window after an attack or a dodge, it's very likely that the deflect won't work and you'll get hit. That's something you don't need to think about in Sekiro. Finally, despite being locked on, some of the enemy attacks (Rellana as well, in my case), will hit you simply because they connected on a certain angle not covered by shield. So you might just get hit while deflecting/blocking even with a lock on. So far, exclusively deflecting (and guard counter) seems to be a very slow approach to me (closer to blocking with a shield). Maybe I should mix up attacks as well. Then again, deflects are not as reliable immediately after attack (as mentioned in 2nd para). So, not sure what's the best approach.
People seem to forget that Elden Ring is an RPG. RPGs are preparation games. If you are underprepared for a boss or enemy, you will die. Being prepared with knowledge and items drastically increase your survivability.
One of my favorite things about these games is adjusting my setup to counter some difficulty like enemy damage types or status effects. When I spend a long time on a boss I adjust basically everything from armor and weapons to rings/talismans to consumables to how maybe red and blue flasks I have
If you look at a lot of those jump interactions (like jumping through falling swords), they don’t look like they should work at all and hence aren’t intuitive. Most players who jumped will think they’re just lucky instead of the… actual mess going on lol
Godrick was the fight I realized jumping was so strong. It felt amazing jumping over half his attacks, especially early on in the game when everything is still fresh. I also used a shield and guard counters the whole game, and was never punished except for malenia. Some people are really bad about experimenting. A lot of the items are pretty useful, like it was explained here. I used ironjar aromatic quite a bit when I played with ultra-greatswords. It just lets you beat down on whatever you like.
Game finally feels fun and people will be using all kind of weapons and magic for beating things. This promotes versatility and having game knowledg and better application of game mechanics over all. Crazy how punishing one move can change so much about the game.
I legitimately just got done defeating Morgot on my new character about 10 minutes before watching this video, this would've been nice to know then lol
That's because FS has had bad cameras in their games for a while. Sekiro is one of my favorite games ever made, but at times the camera in that game is garbage. Same with Elden Ring. Forcing players to not use a core mechanic because the enemy is too large and your camera sucks is a design issue.
Yea I actually figured this out a while back. I don’t roll a lot of the time. I either jump an attack which actually makes me move faster through the air in one direction so it’s good for gaining distance on an enemy. A lot of enemies I honestly just strafe or back up out of the way. Most of the time the best evasive action is just simple movements. I like using rolling to dodge and get into a certain position. I love walking around to Mohgs back too. It’s so funny because you can see essentially keep him in a perpetual turning motion.
Saw this vid a few days ago and started doing what the guy said while game played differently at that point and it was way more fun, his videos are making me want to do different strats for new playthroughs
I could totally see this being the case. Here’s an example from OSRS: there are enchanted crossbow bolts that each have different effects. Back in the day (Pre-EOC RuneScape, so like, 2006-2009), only the sweatiest/best players used or even KNEW about them, but today, they’re ubiquitous. Unless you have BiS, they’re basically the range meta for quite a few bosses. Those bolts would have been meta back in the day too, but the normal/casual players were too noob to know. lol
Rolling is totally viable if you know about the timing. Practice makes perfect when it comes to rolling. A lot of people either press the button too early or too late and end up getting pancaked lol. Timing is everything.
Wild. I don't think I've used a single item in any souls game. I never know what any of them do, or if they will be worth using, so they just sit in my inventory forever. Actually, that's basically true for every game.
I've been under the impression that anything that you can do to get out of the way of an attack works.. Jumping, rolling, running, back stepping, using skill as defense like Bloodhoud step, raptors of the mist.. This game really lets you play it how you want to, basically create out own mechanics..
This is why I love Elden Ring so much, so many subtle details and things you can do to counter your enemies. The Nox enemies with the whips that ride the ants underground, the Nox are mind controlling the ants. If you throw a sleep pot at them, the Nox and the ant start fighting because the ant is no longer under it's mind control, then you don't have to deal with that combo anymore
its why i hate it so much, so many of these attacks at the beginning he should have been hit. the fact that he doesnt is unintuitive. so many times when i roll i roll after the attack hits but i dont get hit. this is straight up bad hitboxes
@@Akakiryuushin This guy gets it. But isn't it funny how all these fanboys are out here pretending like jump has never existed in any game, ever, and that it's this amazing thing that FS did that no one else can do. But in reality, it is poor game design. There absolutely should be attacks you can jump over, but most of the attacks he's showing are broken. Try jumping over a thrust attack in Sekiro. You could be 10' in the air above the actual attack and still get hit. I would argue that could also be seen as having bad hitboxes, but there it's intentional to make you do a mikiri counter or something else. They specifically don't want you jumping over those attacks. But of course ER is so good and nothing it has in the game has ever been done before, by anyone. Ever. In the history of the world.
The damage resistance talismans and incantations don't seem to be working in the dlc for me. I stack all the defense I can and the bosses do the same damage. I think maybe the scadtree damage resistance is conflicting with the talismans and incantations. I stack fire resistance up to 80 and a pure fire attack still 1 or 2 shots me.
The first wicker giant in the dlc drops a tear that lets you play like sekiro.20 frame window, if you block, you take no damage.guard counters off the block also do insane poise damage.makes bosses a joke once you know the moveset.
No wonder my jump attack str build made my first playthrough so easy. All I did was have jump attack talisman, turtle stamina talisman, ruins greatsword, greatsword, and armor with lots of poise. I was the true jump L1 warrior.
You think it’d be impressive that Asmongold knew so much of this already, but if anything it makes it even more shameful he played 98% if the game by pressing “Jump” and “Attack” without ever changing his build
If his build worked and he dodged and jumped his way to victory, what does it matter? Bleed builds at launch were broken and OP, so why would people switch to something less powerful if they didn't have to or didn't want to as an example. People play how they want to play. That's how games with options work.
This is cool, right after i run the whole game and test every move on every boss to see moves can be jumped and take note, study to memorize, and refresher courses once a week
I found you can use Hoarfrost Stomp to trigger Malenia's waterfowl dance from a distance. If she hasnt used it in a bit, you can run really far from her and stomp at her (not always triggers but she will either do the waterfowl dance or a slight charge at you so keep stomping till she does) and let her do the attack, then stay away from her right after cause she will follow up with another attack right after finishing. But this will make it so she doesnt use it for a small amount of time and gives you time to attack without worry for it.
As a side note, the crystal guys you were referring to are weak to ANY strength weapons provide they do high poise damage. With great sword for example basically 2-3 jumping R2s poise break.
@@JasonWilliams89wait I’m genuinely confused, how is it lazy to add a secondary defensive function to a traversal tool, as a way for players to dodge more attacks, and by extension allow more freedom in boss moveset design
They say FromSoft hit boxes are really tight, and great. Yeah, except the fact a swing can go thought your torso while jumping and you won't get damaged.
Jumping to avoid an attack makes more sense visually and logically than rolling and somehow becoming intangible , I guess i frames are a hidden magic 😂
i kept rolling when im fighting consort radahn(been fighting him for few hours), then i just realized i just need to time my block for his attacks and i finally killed him after 2 tries lmao!
I could be wrong but I don't think he covered the healing spells for revenants. Bring any healing spell to Elphael's deep street trench and watch them melt.
To be fair, they do make it clear some attacks are low sweeps so you can jump over them. But you can also roll away from them, so its easier to just spam roll rather than switching between jumping and rolling ir spamming jumping.
I see most people also still use the lock-on target system, which makes fights harder than they should be, the moment I started jumping and not having lock on I saw how weak enemies actually are, most of their attacks don't even aim at you if you're moving without lock-on, you can fight someone like Maliketh who usually launches barages of attacks that you need to focus on dodging, with just moving to his right while sprinting and dodging all the attacks by default. The DLC reminded us we can't just cheese the game anymore, you actually gotta play properly this time around, unless you want to spend weeks on bosses.
Honestly is kinda crazy how people learn this after 2 years. Explain why so many people including "veterans" kept crying about the game and boss design. Might as well clue people in about windows of attacks because with the dlc it just proove how most people still play it like dark souls 3 just dodging out of reflexes what's comming and trying place 2-3 r1s after a singular dodge or two.
I will say, the bosses in the dlc can get very aggressive. Messmer is spiking bombs on you as soon as you enter, BAYLE is breathing on you as soon as you enter and if he does his lunging talon attack you cant even summon igon, Gaius starts off charging and spirit summoning right away is a gamble.
I remember being so mind boggled by the time I got to Radagon - I was just... bored of how tanky some enemies were and it took me days (few tries per day, which for me, so far, this is the only game that made me just go "time for a break") to beat him. And I did that on first try after stopping trying to fight how I wanted to, and just went: dual wield, spam jump attack because it's faster than normal standing attack and gives you more time to react to stuff while doing basically two times the damage anyway. I knew jumping was good, but this is a perfect example of why Elden Ring, a Souls game about "precision" is not that great, because lots of these attacks actually do "physically" hit you, giving you very little opportunity to learn. I still will roll, because that's how I roll.
Love Vow of the indomitable. I used that on my Golden Paladin. Holy Ground is amazing too if you want to be tanky. Fast golden vow, black flame protection , throw down a warning stone and use holy ground for your allies to stand in. Fun fun.
"Nothing is weak to magic".... Maybe technically true, but a lot of heavily armored opponents and practically any of the stone miners crumble to magic because it bypasses their insane defence. Early in the game, lightning damage is rare, and I'm not sure what the fire resist of these opponents is, but magic is highly useful there. Esp in the crystal tunnel trap area.
Idk if its my TV response time or something but jumping NEVER works and most enemies attacks track you so just moving out of the way doesnt work. Like the enemy turns mid air while attacking and their weapon automatically follows your character. Walking/running to avoid attacks seems like luck whereas rolling is consistent
Most thrust attacks in dlc are jumpable. You can easily react to rennella's delayed thrust and punish with jumping heavy, yes, she will do follow ups, but the first one will miss if you just stay there
It's a Guard Counter, not Shield Counter, it will work if you're guarding, regardless of what you use for that; Many a streamer ignored this mechanic because they "didn't want to equip a shield".
Now I'm not surprised people were claiming "cam boss hard" whilst I've not understood why they just don't unlock their cam from a flying or a big target. Maybe cause I'm PC and not used to controller or tab target games it's used rarely on a small ones that are too elusive, whilst I'm almost always unlocked until it's necessary to follow the boss with some weap art that would miss without it.
Seeing all this stuff makes me think of when people say “if batman had enough prep time he could beat anyone” if you really wanted you could exploit each weakness a boss has and the game would be laughably easy, but it’s amazing that we can even do that as a player, the devs offer so much variety with the game and that makes it amazing, and also people always complain that so many items are useless, but no, they are there for a reason you just have to know when to use them
For Draconic Tree Sentinel you can use the Poison Mist Incantation and he dies without realizing. You need 12 faith which you can get to with the 2 Finger Talisman. You don't need to meet Seal requirements. If you are Prisoner, grab the commoner shirt in the room next to the gate in Stormveil for the extra 1 faith youll need. Never get fireball spammed again. Cheese him first
On the mention of Assassin’s Gambit If you’re willing to sacrifice a Talisman slot Crepus Vial It does the exact same thing, permanently, and costs Nothing but said talisman slot If you want to know how to obtain They’re on the second Volcano Manor request and will be always a guaranteed drop
I knew first thing back of my head that seeing jumping was a thing served more then it's purpose then another dodge option. I jumped allot at the tree sentinel then i jumped allot to dodge the stormveil castle birds fire bombs to avoid them. Also Radahns second form the spirit has so many attacks to dodge with *jumping. Its like fromsoft added an op new mechanic and didn't explain it on purpose. Now watch were all hoing to know about it and how it wirks and make op builds then theyre going to nerf the jumping hitboxes, guaranteed. And strafing ive done more in bloodborne but has been here since ds1 its a very useful tactic.

Basically, the difficulty in ER depends on how you want to play. The DLC feels like a big knowledge-check and the devs were like "Have you learned something from the base game?"
also 20 hit boss combos.
Sort of like Super Mario Bros. 2(aka the Lost Levels). It's basically a test on all the mechanical knowledge you learned from the Original Super Mario Bros.

Guard counter was good against a lot of DLC enemies.

This I agree with , there is no harm in having an in game bestiary instead of having to go to a website to remind myself of a possible weakness.
this would have made a fantastic addition to the game. oml.
add in a pikmin style enemy viewer to the compendium for those enemies you just want to admire (without them trying to kill you) and you got a 11/10 addition to the game.

You can, watch loopine's video called "Stop complaining about Waterfowl Dance", he shows that even if you are finishing a fully charged zweihander R2, you can just 2H your weapon and sprint away, jumping when she gets close and you just dodge the entire first hit. Honestly, From Soft is really nice at giving us so many tools to beat the game. But some people insist on not using them or their wits to beat bosses. Then they complain the game is too hard.
That's the funniest part. The game has a wealth of solutions given to you at your disposal and people just don't use them and whine that the game is unfair and too hard

I beat it three times and I don't really have any desire to go back in. Just too time consuming.
I am one of those who insist on not using every tiny tool, but instead of complaining I just mod the game to be how I want it
I remembered the "your camera is the worst enemy in dark souls" meme. Seems like even in elden ring it's still the enemy since if anyone is always locked on to the enemy they're also locked in by the camera. 🤣
Jump has no i frame.
Proceed to jump and become invincible anyway.
it has one but only for your lower body
they arent s, if you play pvp you will know that spamming jump is a terrible idea and you can get hit airborne easily from many weapons from the ground, its a special state where half of your body enters that makes it so certain attacks ignore that hitbox, thats how from coded most of ground AoE attacks so jump can actually be used in combat, otherwise you would get hit by all those attacks, there are also instances where you simply jump over the attack, because of how tight some attack hitboxes are, like the duelist iron ball thing

Feels like light rolls are being completely ignored. They move your character a greater distance you can often be too far for followup attacks or jump completely behind the enemy
Everyone who plays this game knows how good rolls are but they don't know that jumping is better in so many cases. That's the point.

I prefer 100% damage reduction. That being said, in my next playthrough, I'm gonna try shieldless. Really learn to jump and roll from damage.
Its fantastic the amount of stuff you can jump over.
The trick is to look at a boss like a fighting game, each move has a certain counter, its just working out what works
agree but the rememberance bosses have wayy too many moves with lots of fake outs/ suprise follow ups to memorize each and every little arm movement.
Ok woolie

You don't even need a shield to shield counter, you can use it you guard with a weapon, you can see the protagonist doing this in the early trailers

@@Fmakegeo6 ognbal used it on rellana and deflected her sekiro style without taking any dmg, if u time it like sekiro deflect u dont drain stamina at all
@@Fmakegeo6 always deflect the last attack of a combo
When I spend a long time on a boss I adjust basically everything from armor and weapons to rings/talismans to consumables to how maybe red and blue flasks I have
It would be really great if the developers put more tips about enemy weaknesses in the game
The folks who complain about using all those mechanics are the same people who talk about rules in a street fight.

Can't wait for the next game where running will make everything but your toes invincible, thus being the new meta
I legitimately just got done defeating Morgot on my new character about 10 minutes before watching this video, this would've been nice to know then lol
I think you kind of learn that locking on to bigger targets is bad against the first dragon in the river area

Timing is everything.
it depends on the attack mostly, learning where to jump and where to roll is very helpful on certain bosses.
thing is in the dlc, taking 3:40 as an example, the entire elden beast body would be a hitbox with that attack....
He's actually blown away. It's like Alatreon all over again

Wild. I don't think I've used a single item in any souls game. I never know what any of them do, or if they will be worth using, so they just sit in my inventory forever. Actually, that's basically true for every game.
1:50 I tried jumping on it too.. and it worked. hahaha

Cheese him first
On the mention of Assassin’s Gambit
If you’re willing to sacrifice a Talisman slot
Crepus Vial
It does the exact same thing, permanently, and costs Nothing but said talisman slot
If you want to know how to obtain
They’re on the second Volcano Manor request and will be always a guaranteed drop
