I'm in America and I have been telling my husband all summer, "Where are the bugs?!"
I remember as a kid the porch light swarming with insects- now maybe 2-6 on a "good night." I feel it's all bugs - not just the bees and butterflies. 😢
I have always love bugs - it's a dramatic decline.

I'm worried about the bees as well Emma, and the butterflies. We've noticed this all over our allotment site. The May flowers came and went quickly, the rain washed them out. All of the pollinator friendly flower seedlings planted are so late to bloom, many have been taken by slugs. The best flowers so far are the ones that self seeded from last year. We need more bees, cut some of the annual flowers, it will encourage more flowers to bloom over the next couple of months. Once they go to seed they stop blooming so fill your vase and enjoy!

I've normally a garden full of bees but I've seen 4 bees 😢, some of my flowers that lasted months have seeded and gone already.
I have seen quite a few posts where people's plants have died over night and bushes and trees have died top to middle. I had one do that too. It's all very worrying if I was honest! 😢
My favourite part of summer is to watch the bees busying about doing their thing. 🐝🐝🐝

I am an avid gardener with severely limited vision, your idea with balls an canes is brilliant, managed to get a load for £2 at charity shop. My garden is colourful and safe now as I have loads of Tom's cucumbers and beans. Thanks for tip and I also haven't had bees even though I have lots of lavender which is usually covered in them ❤

Same here in southern Scotland Emma. Hardly any bees or butterflies. My buddleia is usually smothered and I've seen two Red Admirals and that's it. It's very worrying not having any pollinators. Very autumnal here too ! The allotment and garden just has that feel about it. Some sunshine would definitely help!

Insects in general have been very sparse this year, last year I could have fed my whole village on the amount of beans and tomatoes I had, this year I have 11 tomatoes on all my vines, I've picked maybe 20 beans, all my plants are full of flowers they just aren't getting pollinated. I normally have peacock, red admiral, painted lady, comma butterflies amoung others, this year I've seen 4 cabbage whites lol. Normally I could go out and count maybe 50 bees at a time on my lavender, the Most I've seen so far this year is 4.....

I planted phacelia as green manure. It was absolutely covered in bees and other pollinators. Then it got a bit cold. They're back now though. Blooming hot and sunny here in Oxfordshire. As usual for UK...humid! Pumpkins etc have been pollinated.
Grow phacelia if you want a ton of pollinators. Farmers use it to nourish the soil.

Moved into a bungalow with a huge south facing garden. I fenced off a large area for my daughter to develop an allotment area as she had been waiting for one for years with our local council, her flat only has a tiny front area. Anyway she has planted lots of pollinator friendly plants as have I in my part of garden. Also lots of bug hotel and habitats around garden too but compared to last year bee numbers are definitely down Emma. There must be some around as most veg has been pollinated and have grown lots of blueberries, apples, peas, spuds. Beans are starting to grow but yield is low compared to previous years. Toms have flowers on and some fruit but very tiny at moment. This years spring and summer has been awful wet and cold mostly which must of impacted Bee population.

I have been inundated with bees of different kinds. Obviously not when it cold and raining. They get too cold to forage.
Today they are all over my alliums and nasturtiums. I do have butterflies but only recently. Our spring was too wet and far too cold. We can all try to provide ares and plant for them. We all have to do out but. Mass production sprays chemicals so we have to do our bit. It can be done I live near a small airport and see a lot of wildlife

Maybe related to the v cold wet spring: more slugs, fewer bees. Alternatively, as a friend of mine said, what part of “insecticide” do farmers not understand? Industrial arable farming uses a lot of insecticide. All the more important for people to grow their own, and if affordable, buy organic.

North London. Very few bumble bees. I understand some of the reasons. An unusual one that I discovered recently is that they compete with honey bee, and there were seven hives in one location at the last count. I think there should be a limit because that is just an industry for profit at that location. Self-serving people who are interested in their own interests in an overcrowded area. Time to move! 🙄

I garden organically for wildlife and nothing is planted (apart from my veg beds) that isn’t bee or wildlife friendly. If people do this and provide food, water and homes for them they will find you. Even bird numbers and squirrels are up this year in my garden, having been displaced due to new build housing estates nearby.

‘Bee absolutely honest’ lol. 🐝 My garden is full of bees, I have no concern that their number has declined in my area. Is concerning you aren’t also seeing them in your allotment. The Butterflies however are entirely absent here sadly. Bear in mind 95% of pollination is done by solitary bees like mason and leaf cutter bees, not honey bees, and solitary bees are harder to spot as they are abit smaller and a bit less brightly coloured.

Have you tried Chilli flakes around the seedlings to protect from snails and slugs?

I have had tons of bees in spring on the big Pieris plant flowers. Now they’re are all over the borage & thyme. I created a big patch at my allotment. Haven’t seen many butterflies just odd one. I leave plenty nasturtiums for them but really very few about

Loads of bees here in the Northwest, especially bumblebees. I've seen quite a few moths but very few butterflies though. Our council stopped mowing in 2020 until later in the season so loads of wildflowers about through the summer and people have been seedbombing wildflowers on the grass verges, which I think helps.

I have a quite a few bees luckily in Lancashire. But my allotment is full of pollinators, nepeta is a real attraction for them. My best tip has been to plant lettuce and sent it to seed. The flowers on these seem to really attract bees and many other smaller flying insects. Plus they look really beautiful. Each lettuce produces different flowers too. Rocket is a personal favourite of mine, plus grows really quickly. Next year I aim to grow lettuce indoors in January so it will hopefully go to seed early spring for early flowers for the pollinators. Fingers crossed. Have had hardly any butterflies at all. A couple of cabbage whites in the last few days and that’s it. X

I've honestly seen one red butterfly this year, I've seen around a dozen cabbage whites, quite a few honey bees around the borage, and a few bumbles, no great problems with bugs this year. I've a pollinator garden made this year, but still squash plants putting out females and no males.

All the bees came out way too early and many would have died in April. There were virtually non over the last month but just over the last 4-5 days there are a few more bees and also butterflies. I tried to contact bee societies and never got anywhere.

Very few butterflies. Have lots of bumblebees because I have places for them to overwinter. Have you got a bughotel?

Yep, very few bees and I've only seen 1 butterfly. I've also found that many of the things I usually grow and grow well are very slow this year! Xxx
