Thanks for updating us on Steve. Can’t wait for his sunflowers to bloom! And I think it is so awesome that he is a falconer and into birds and I think it’s awesome that you’re into birds too! They are such amazing creatures and so important to the ecosystem. My daughter became obsessed with birds from age 3 to about 9 and she became literally a bird expert. We have 7 year old bushes that had blooms but our 70+ year old lilac did not bloom at all this year. It had bloomed last year in the spring and again in October. I read if lilacs bloom outside of their normal season they might not bloom at all the following spring. I’m hoping that’s what happened. The weather has been so hot and dry in Iowa.

This has been the weirdest weather, we finally got some rain and a cool down here in central Michigan 😅….. Steve, I grew up on a dairy farm and understand the gamble you take every year with the weather…… you gotta “love” what you do to keep going. Nicole and Steve……We have about 2 acres of landscape gardens and I really appreciate all the information on growing and cutting flowers, learn something new all the time from you guys. Thanks so much for giving your precious time to us!
Hey Sweet Pea. Thank you for bringing Sunflower Steve onto your channel. Please let him know that I don’t want diamonds I just want some of his precious sunflower seeds. Can’t get the varieties here that you have. I planted pansies and linarias today which I started from seeds. So much love to you
I am battling tons of issues I never have before. Cucumber beetles gave my cucs bacterial wilt, cantaloupe leaves turning yellow and dying, slugs DEVOURING plants, mice, moles, chipmunks eating the base of plants, bunnies, kale starting to look diseased, apple tree being attacked by some kind of nasty looking worm. I am sure things will come through for the most part, but I will tell you what...every time I turn around something else is going wrong. And I am tired 😢
For that field with the nutsedge, till one more time after cropping, plant red clover for winter cover crop, mow mid-spring, cover with a nice layer of compost, plant Sudan grass next late spring, (it will out compete the weeds)mow every 10-14 days, leave the organic matter to build up over the warm season, shallow till in late summer to stir up organic matter and expose top layer of weed seeds, allow enough time for them to still germinate and repeat. Perhaps devise a cover crop plan that builds organic matter in your soil. Each crop removes layers of topsoil, without adding it back to the field the more shallow the plot becomes over time, that nut grass seed bank was there all along it seems, the least amount of tillage possible would greatly benefit that plot.
Steve is awesome, blooper outakes and all. Tell him not to worry! He's going real farm work, and we appreciate his time. BTW, his outakes are pretty funny, and hope he catches up on some sleep!
We used to use the foliage for filler all the time when we did mixed bouquets for farmers market. Yellow Baptisia looks like Eucalyptus even more than the Blue. And the Yelow Bap has really cool seed pods that look like round green grapes for about 10 days before they turn dark and can be used for texture.
Is there any way of reaching out directly to sunflower Steve? I have a Baptisia australis that has grown a sport. Absolutely gorgeous yellow and green variegated foliage!! It does flower, and it does that seed that did germinate for me this year, however I’m trying to find out if there is a way that I can take cuttings from the plant itself because they have completely outgrown the space that they are in and sadly, need to be removed. I just wonder if he has any experience with doing cuttings and how I would go about making them
I have never done cuttings but I know it is done. However, I have divided them in the fall and spring when they are dormant to multiply clones of the parent plant.
How do you deal with the sunflower seed theft? Especially with the chipmunks 🐿? Do you just heavy sow a bed? I have them take most. It can be devastating lol I have procut sunflowers. I don’t have grow lights Inside so I don’t wanna start indoors and to transplant after.
Oh man i love his lights....i.want.his flowers...soo bad... My soil will hold.water. Maybe half a day but we dont get it after mid june no matter what...if.i.was young id move next.door....he would hate me . Cause id sneak over all the time...grab me.a lot.of.flowers.and make.arraignments for all the neighbors..like i do now with my tiny.garden .wonder if he would plant me.some ..

Hey Sweet Pea. Thank you for bringing Sunflower Steve onto your channel. Please let him know that I don’t want diamonds I just want some of his precious sunflower seeds. Can’t get the varieties here that you have. I planted pansies and linarias today which I started from seeds. So much love to you
omigodomigod...driving home from grocery shopping and listening to a podcast, I swear I heard your voice doing a Progressive Auto Insurance ad!
It has been a strange growing season .here in Iowa we are still in a drought which is not normal.
@@tinaholbrook9719 oh man that sounds like a nightmare😭 hope that you are able to catch a break soon.
@@LittleIowa me too. It sucks to put tons of effort in only to have it undone 😢
Steve - great to see the progress with the all the flowers. Looking forward to the next update.
you bet
Wonderful for people to have so much purpose in your lives. Thanks for being will to share with us.
You guys are great!! Thanks for sharing Lana Stewart
Closed Captioning please Thank you for all what do you for us.
I’m so sorry the scam happened. Seems like it’s going around…. Anyway, I wanted to ask what CSA stood for? Thanks hugs and love from Texas!
Cant wait to see what the purple cotyledons turn out to be!!
Steve is awesome, blooper outakes and all. Tell him not to worry! He's going real farm work, and we appreciate his time. BTW, his outakes are pretty funny, and hope he catches up on some sleep!
Got a 4 hour nap and almost 5 inches of rain. So my prayers were answered and all is well with the world.
Praying for Sunflower Steve!!
Thank you Cynthia, prayers were answered. Almost 5 inches today, hence the reason I have time to reply. God bless.

Painted myself into a corner there I guess... 😳 🙄
Have you or Steve ever used Baptesia as a filler? It’s beautiful (almost looks like eucalyptus) and it holds for WEEKS in the vase!!
Yes Steve breeds it. Very special varieties coming soon! He also plans to sell bare roots this fall.
I love seeing what Sunflower Steve is doing! Poor guy was so tired at the end.
Got almost 5 inches of rain today and a 4 hour nap. Bring on the sunflowers.
Yay sunflower Steve!
Yay you!
So I am assuming that all gardeners, especially flower, also love their birds and pollinators. I know I sure do.
How do you deal with the sunflower seed theft? Especially with the chipmunks 🐿? Do you just heavy sow a bed? I have them take most. It can be devastating lol I have procut sunflowers. I don’t have grow lights Inside so I don’t wanna start indoors and to transplant after.
Sunflower Steve is a Master Falconer. He gets even more cool in my book with each video!
What is Steve going to have his own UA-cam channel? I would definitely subscribe!
