Several of you guys have wondered why I don't cut them and bring them in the house or sell them. It takes 6 hours the way it is, just to rogue the field and flag flowers. I cut down literally hundreds if not a thousand every day that aren't making the grade. The amount of time it would take to cut and put in water, plus the sheer volume of flowers, you would need hundreds of vases and a lot of time (which I don't have enough of the way it is.) I do bring a handful in every few days though. For those that haven't watched the other videos{which will answer a lot of questions}, we cut almost 2000 sunflowers{Sunrich Orange} every morning for cut flowers for my customers. These double flowers are strictly for seed. Most of the singles have pollen and would be a mess inside the house. I know its tough to watch, Erin and I both agree you have to be brutally consistent and just cut them regardless of how cool they are. If it is totally a jaw dropper, that I have never seen before and in the wrong field, then it gets flagged and gets an insect bag around it to isolate it for hand pollinating. Anyway just a quick explanation since I find myself with a few hours of time because we are getting a glorious all day soaking rain, yay. Have a blessed day
After watching you on Erin's channel, I'm guessing you're near Superior. I have family in Duloot. 😉 I'm in the Twin Cities. You have really relaxed in front of the camera. Good job!
I missed this update the other day. I had my hands full with a sick grandbaby who was running 102 fever. I am playing catch up today. Steve your farm is absolutely beautiful. Omg! Those sunflowers are gorgeous!!!!! Love love the color and forms. Those séeds will sell like hot cakes. Love the shirt again today. I don't know how many of y'all are my age but how many think Steve is the twin of Martin Milner off the show Adam 12 🙋..lol. God bless you and your wonderful family Steve. It warms my heart to see your family involved with the flower farming business. I miss the days of my children helping me with my flowers and vegetables. Can't wait to get some of those seeds.😁
Thanks, Nicole! You’re such a delight! Cheesehead...err...Sunflower Steve should have his own channel. Not only does he have such a wealth of knowledge about flower farming, but he’s such a great guy. He’s such a natural teacher. He’s smart, clear, practical, no nonsense, and trustworthy!
"Off with their heads!" Oh my goodness, I couldn't rogue successfully :( I'd be cutting them and bringing them in! What a process though. Thank you Steve for sharing your hard work and thank you Nicole for sharing Steve with us :)
I couldn't handle ripping the heads off either, they are all so gorgeous. I might have been able to cut them off and enjoyed them a bit longer though! I love all the updates from sunflower Steve. Also, your Zinnias are beautiful!
Just have to say, I am obsessed with sunflower Steve. He is a wealth of information. He needs his own channel for sure😃 So thankful you shared him with all of us😃
OMG Sunflower Steve! I totally get why he has to cull the flowers that don't meet the criteria he is breeding for but I would have to cut those stems and bring them into the house lol. Loved this update. Can't wait to see the harvest!! And can't wait to be able to buy the seeds!
Hey Sweet Pea and @sunflower Steve. What amazing work both of you do. You have no idea how much I appreciated your video today. So much unrest in South Africa at the moment. Burning buildings and rioting. Pretty scary. It was a welcome relief to watch you both
I love the comparison of the Benary giant zinnia to the Oklahoma. Thank you for that! The Oklahoma looks so tiny. Lol I’m growing Benary’s for the first time and some are budded up now just patiently waiting for them to bloom. 🧐
Roguing is a tuff job but were glad you can do it Sunflower Steve!! 🌻 Nicole, the zinnias are looking good!💮 Can't wait to see the tour of what is in bloom in your garden!
Very grateful for Sunflower Steve showing us his process for such large quantities of flowers. And Nicole, as always, thank you for sharing your progress. Beautiful zinnias.
I did the same thing you did when sunflower Steve ripped off those blooms! Thank You for letting us have a look at his progress. Those are some beautiful giant zinnias!
....but Sunflower Steve, I want all the sunflowers! I'll be loving the singles, all the colors, and the doubles. I would like to grow them and let them surprise me! Loved seeing this update!
Those fields are incredible! Wow! That will be gorgeous in a few days, I can't wait for the drone footage! And um with you Nicole, id have trouble culling them as well. Id save them for a vase at least hahaha.
I really enjoy the sunflower Steve 🌻 updates!! Wow!! I am dreaming of my field filled with those amazing sunflower! My panche doubles have sold so well! Beautiful zinnias!
My husband heard alllll about you yesterday, Sunflower Steve, as we were on a trip in Wisconsin. I'm with you, Nicole - I'd have a hard time pulling off those sunflower heads! Thanks for the update!
Ima be honest. :) "Cheesehead Steve" is gonna be hard to get out of my head! My own sunflowers (bed #1) are just starting to open, and it's so exciting. Really value these update vids -- motivates me!!!
Who else had to rewind to see what Sunflower Steve was actually trying to say? ✋ Also, why not just cut the sunflower and put in an arrangement instead of ripping the head off...just curious! I realize quality control, but sheesh, I’m with you Nicole! 😱
Hey, that Localline thing is about $60 a month minimum. For small businesses that minimum charge is way too much. People like to pick out their items and going for a short drive to get fresh flowers. It really is kind of dreamy. But for those that need delivery, there is likely a better option.
I planted Moulin Rouge sunflowers this year (because I can’t wait for Steve’s flowers!!!) and to my disappointment they are so dark they look like black flowers! They’d be a neat color for a fall bouquet, but I was hoping for a bright red color. Anyone else plant Moulin Rouge?
The sunflowers I seed keep getting stolen by critters! 😞 I started more inside and transplanted when I thought they were big enough to survive on their own. Anyone have tips on direct seeding successfully?
Duly Noted. I kinda did that for effect because I knew it would freak Nicole out. I am actually more polite about it and use a snippers, lol. I actuallly do find myself apologizing to some of them sometimes as I cut them

Your videos bring me joy Nicole.
What does culling mean? Love your t-shirts Sunflower Steve! May God continue to richly bless you all.
Culling = Kill. Literally kill the plant so it doesn't pollinate the type he is trying to breed and mess with the genetics.
select from a large quantity; obtain from a variety of sources.
"anecdotes culled from Greek and Roman history"
Flower Hill Farm tyvm Nicole. 😁

I think I like the darker burgundy with gold striations as opposed to gold with burgundy striations...for fall bouquets.
Thanks for the updates. I love seeing the fields as they grow.

Probably takes too long out in the field. But ya ouch hahaha
He had to take a trip to the Twin Cities (also known as Minneapolis and St. Paul) for supplies. That's where I live. 😄
He has millions growing in his field

Ur amazing
It's very very very good beautifully Girl 🍎🐱🇺🇸
Steve if I lived near you I'd come over and save you the time to pull those heads, just point and say that one and I'd be happy to do the cutting =^)
Loved this video! Question.. if Giant Double Zinnias are cut before fully open.. will they finish opening in the vase??
They usually do not open more. Harvest when fully open
Flowercide!! 😱😱😱
